Editor’s Note Roses are red, violets are blue, 2021 felt a lot like…the beginning of 2022? Whether it was the continuance of the COVID-19 pandemic, or the monotony of online classes, the past couple of years have felt like deja vu, and this is what the Salterrae team has reflected on in their works for this issue! In the pages following, readers will find thoughtful poetry, creative reflections on existential angst and zodiac traits, and eye-catching photography of a few talented Trinity students. So, whilst daydreaming about a Strachan-sit or a sunny quad day, find a comfy spot in your summer break accommodations and crack open the Spring 2022 issue of the Salterrae with us. We are so happy to share our pieces with you! Enjoy!

i see you everywhere i look in the teeth of strangers on the sidewalk in the shape of the bread on my plate. there are parts of you– whispers and words scattered everywhere in this place i can smell them in the wind, divine them in my grandma’s teacup. last week in my frantic search for your wrists i raked my fingers through the sandy floor overturned every stone on the bottom of the lake. you weren’t there, but i saw you just for a little while: a flicker of your still-warm smile in the lakeweed’s gentle sway.

there is poetry in the air, tonight. it hangs heavy and damp tastes like my roommate’s cigarettes. the sweet stir of goodbyes has already begun to curl around me one hundred moments lost in time where all i can remember is the colour of the sky and the roughness of its eyes on mine. i am so hungry, tonight i could eat every word spilling from your lips take a sip from the eye of the world and collapse into the thawing snow. this was the time i melted into the blue night peppered my body in white hot stars just to become a part of the universe, waiting to be seen through your telescope lens. i tightly grip the bitterness of the air i let it wash my skin smooth i give myself to this, to the end to another lost season the same song from before playing over and over again, but i don’t mind, i don’t mind, i have given myself to the poetry in the wind i wait to wash up on shore to be found with the tender rosebuds.

Existential Angst done that.

It’s time to get real with ourselves. This hole we’re all stuck in doesn’t seem like it’s going away anytime soon. We’re starting our third year in this absolute dumpster fire of a pandemic, online school semester #5 is going as dismally as most of our love lives, and to top it all off, Brooklyn 99 aired its final episode months ago (no, I haven’t recovered yet…that was my comfort show, so please respectfully give me time to grieve).

Now, let me get to my point before I start spiralling into the extensive depths of my coffee-induced despair. I know I’m not the only one who’s tired of living through a major historical event. We get it, our kids will ask us what it was like to live through this mysterious time called “the COVID-19 pandemic” that they were forced to read about in their–hopefully anti-racist and anti-colonial–history textbooks. I mean, if I have to open one more professional email that starts with the phrase “as a result of these unprecedented times we are all living through”, I’m going to throw a fit in front of Robarts. Not that anyone will hear me though, as campus is apocalyptically empty.

My point is that it’s been tough. Something that hit me really hard was that I was 19 years old when this all started, and I’m about to turn 22 in a few months. Aren’t these supposed to be some of the best years of our lives? Fortunately, I’m healthy, I’m fit, and I’m feeling like a sexy academic now, but the prime years of what is supposed to be my unburdened and irresponsible youth are being ripped away from me–from all of us.

And believe me, I get it. We have to protect each other. Now more than ever, the world must come together. We’ve got to support each other so we can be a little stronger and a little wiser coming out on the other side. I get that and I hope you all do as well. With that being said we’re also Young Dumb & Broke (shoutout to Khalid) and we have the right to express how the world crumbling around us just sucks sometimes.

So, here’s the thing. This existential angst we’ve all been feeling is definitely not a been there, done that feeling…at least not yet. It’s more of a still there, doing that feeling if I’m being totally honest. *Someday* — whenever that mythical and magical time may be — we’ll be graduated, excessively educated, (hopefully!) employed, and thriving.

To my fellow 4th years, long gone are the days of being called “worms” without understanding what it meant, of strategically avoiding stepping on the grass in the Quad, of getting lost in the steam tunnels, or, of caring what our TAs think of us.

Regardless of us nearing the end and it feeling pretty anti-climactic…we made it! We’re soon crossing the finish line…even if we do it crawling on our hands and knees. Remember to soak in this victory, it’s a huge accomplishment even though it might not always feel that way.

To everyone else, buckle up. There’s so much left to learn: the easy way, the hard way, and the accidentally-came-across-it-on-Reddit way. But you can do it, I know you can.

Even though existential angst is not something I would wish on my worst enemy or the taxi driver who almost hit me on my way to Sid Smith two months ago, it’s just something that comes with the territory of being a kid during this…hot mess.

So, although our endless (and completely valid) anxiety is more of a still there, doing that kind of situation, one day it won’t be. In that mystical *someday* I like to think about, all these hardships and absurdities we’re forced to live through right now will be distant memories of the not-so-good ol’ days. Our angst really will transform into “been there, done that… no longer got time for that.” Trust me. Or don’t. In the end, it’s up to you. But isn’t it a nice thought to keep us going for a little while longer?

aries: ashtray Who else would dare try to outshoot the swat team? An Aries will do absolutely anything for someone they love, even if that thing involves making the dumbest decision they possibly can.

taurus: lexi A Taurus definitely has the observer energy necessary to create a play with as much detail as “Our Life”. While Lexi was self-aware enough to understand why people might be mad at her, the characteristic Taurus stubbornness prevented her from actually doing anything about it.

Not that I was complaining.

gemini: elliot Elliot dared give us a Tiny Desk Concert when we could’ve been watching an actual fight. Not to mention he was singing to the girl he was hooking up with’s girlfriend!! That’s a Gemini if I’ve ever seen one!

cancer: fez All Fez wants is to raise a bunch of kids on a farm far away from anyone that can disrupt his blissful rustic life.

I think he, and all his fellow cancers, deserve that peace.

leo: maddy Maddy is an ex-pageant girl, the most Leo hobby anyone could have. And did Cassie really think she could out-crazy a Leo? Leos know how to fight and they look amazing doing it.

virgo: rue Rue was born 3 days after 9/11, making her a Virgo. However, the only adjective I can think of when it comes to Virgos is clean. I’m manifesting that for her future.

faye: libra If there’s one thing Libras love, it’s an exuberant amount of lip filler. Faye is a little spacey but she’s cute and that’s honestly all that matters.

scorpio: nate Nate Jacobs is a master male manipulator that really needs to calm down and not make everything so intense.

Keeping as many secrets as he did is definitely something only a Scorpio is capable of. I will give him credit where it’s due, his Scorpio magnetism worked overtime to help him pull the hottest girls at Euphoria High.

sagittarius: kat Kat somehow got bored of Ethan but he happens to be the most objectively fun and interesting person in all of Euphoria High. Let Kat’s story be a warning to the conundrum every Sag faces in their life, getting bored too easily and ending up alone in the end, written down to a side-character due to the inability to commit to a forward moving plotline.

capicorn: cal aquarius: jules

Capricorn men suck.

Eccentric and inimitable Jules is a beautiful soul leaving a trail of destruction behind her. How perfectly Aquarius.

pisces: cassie Delusional is a Pisces trademark. Cassie is a hopeless romantic but she’s decided to make it everybody’s problem. I promise you that the messiest people you know have strong Pisces placements.

Euphoria high is no exception.

The spring day I remember well, When John Maxwell would make the crowd swell, Every head with two eyes affixed Saw the soaring ball he sent with only a flick.
