ECHOES OF
PROVENCE:
A French Conversation

As a landscape painter, I’m drawn to places where history and nature meet—where the land tells stories and the light holds memory. The Provence region of Southern France, with its ancient beauty and deep artistic legacy, has long inspired me. I travelled there to paint en plein air, hoping to experience the same creative spark that once moved the great artists of the past.
Wandering through its sunlit hills, vineyards, and quiet villages, I felt the presence of those who had painted there before. The landscape seemed to breathe with artistic energy—its shifting light, vibrant colours, and layered history creating a sense of timelessness.
Painting in Provence became more than capturing scenery; it was a connection to something greater. This work reflects that journey. It’s an attempt to translate not just what I saw, but what I felt—the spirit of a place that continues to inspire, and the silent conversation between artist, land, and history.

ABOUT PETER WATTS

Peter Watts, born in 1963 in Horsham, Victoria, is an acclaimed Australian artist known for capturing the transient interplay of light and shadow in Southern Australia’s skies and rural landscapes. His mastery of these ephemeral moments earned him finalist spots in the prestigious Glover Prize in 2021, 2022, and 2024, as well as the “People’s Choice” award in 2022. That same year, he won “Best in Show” at the Camberwell Art Prize in Melbourne.
Represented in galleries across Australia and Singapore, Peter’s work blends realism with subtle abstraction, offering nuanced interpretations of nature’s shifting beauty. His paintings vividly explore the dynamic relationship between land, sky, and light, highlighting both the delicate and powerful elements of the natural world.
