- Cole Fullmer
Like most consumers over the age of 30, all of my knowledge about the illicit herb was obtained from the black-market. How to get it, who to talk to if I wanted it, how to consume it, and how to stay out of trouble once I had it – it was a vicious and dangerous Again, lifestyle.like most, I wasn’t able to stay out of trouble. Probability and statistics that come with 20 year of consumption might be to blame, or just bad luck. Any way you look at it though, I felt cheated the day I was picked up by Summit County Police for a grinder full of weed. On paper, it reads as paraphernalia and a controlled substance charges. I even wondered to myself if I had a serious drug problem while reading my nefarious police report the following day.
During 2018 when I decided to start Utah’s first cannabis news and culture magazine, American states earned over $1.4 billion in tax revenue from legal cannabis sales. In the same year, over 600,000 Americans were arrested for possessing cannabis.
In this issue of SBC, we’re giving you a full-spectrum view of the Utah medical cannabis industry and what it has to offer patients legally. It’s been the pleasure of my life getting to know the various pharmacy operators, growers, budtenders, trimmers, security guards, and patients along the way. Now it’s your chance.

The year was 1999 and I was a freshman in High School. I used the $20 bill my mother gave me for lunch that week and bought a gram of chronic from an older kid in my science class – we’ll remain nameless.
It does not matter how I feel though. It fucked up my life and still continues to do so, but not as badly as others I’ve met along the way – and that’s probably because I’m a white male. I come from the shadowy side of the street known as the black-market. Not because it’s where I wanted to reside, but it’s where you are forced to go if you want to consume the good herb. This isn’t the case anymore though, and this reality brings a smile to my stoney face like the Grinch. I have not used the black-market to
Thank you for reading and being a part of our Salt Baked City community and culture. Our state needs fair and just cannabis reform, and it starts with patients like you. After all, it feels good to live life elevated and smile, so make sure to spread the cheer this holiday season. Your Utah neighbor will thank you for it and you’ll feel better along the way.

The questions streamed through my mind right up until the big moment. I can still taste my heart in my throat while it was trying to escape my anxiety riddled body when he casually slipped the Ziploc baggie under my desk while Mr. Martin blabbed about cell structure.
Step inside every pharmacy in the state and see all of the amazing products they have to offer. We have a new budding green industry with a lot of new names and sticky-icky goods for you to discover. Let Salt Baked City be your bridge to the light side.
The memories I’m gathering now that medical cannabis is legal in Utah are equally as special – they’re just so different from experiences in the past and find myself living in an episode of ‘Disjointed’ on a daily basis.
Helping free the plant and those harmed by unjust cannabis laws has been my main objective since Salt Baked City has gone to print – but the grey area between legal and illegal is still so vast, and why accurate and reliable cannabis journalism is needed in the Behave State.
purchase cannabis in over a year. It has been so long it’s hard to even remember what the archaic process is like. You never forget your first-time though.
It was a seamless deal, and I’ve repeated the process over a 1,000 times around the globe since. I eventually calmed my nerves some too, but that anxiety never goes away -- and the OG’s claim that’s what keeps you alive. I feel bad for those that are going to miss out on the black-market lifestyle. I met a lot of my best friends because of cannabis. Either I got it from them, or we liked to consume it together. Either way, the plant bonded us, and I will cherish those memories and friendships forever.
I can still remember, vividly, stressing out the night before about how this drug deal was going to go down during the third period. Did I give him the money first? Is a gram of weed going to fit in my backpack? What do I do if somebody sees us? What if my dealer is really an undercover cop? What is my mom going to do to me if she finds out I’m a criminal?

Utah ’ s First Pharmacy & Product Guide
Although Utah legislators baulked at the necessity of a cannabis program in the state, and predicted less than 10,000 residents would register in the first year, we’ve seen numbers blossom to over 45,000 patients.
Some would say the state’s patient population is growing like a weed. Currently, through statistics gathered from the UDOH, Utah is gaining 78 new patients a day, equaling 2,000 a month, putting our state on track to have 60,000 by Spring of 2022 if the momentum continues.
If you are one of many who have qualified for a medical cannabis card in the state and have begun visiting these locations, the idea of going into a pharmacy can be a bit daunting.
So, sit back and relax. Pull out your favorite consumption tool, pack it full, turn the pages and step inside every medical cannabis pharmacy in the state. There’s no card required, but we’re guessing if you don’t have one now – you’ll want to get one after you experience Utah’s Green Scene.
What do they look like? How do I act? Are the cops going to bust in? Will I get arrested after I leave? Does Utah have good weed?
Although all valid questions to have in the Behave State – don’t worry – and be happy!
Your visit to a medical cannabis pharmacy should be no more stressful than a trip to the grocery store. If anything, it should be better –you’re buying weed after all.
Whether you’re new to the program and just receiving your medical cannabis card – or been partaking on the state’s new sticky-icky products since the beginning, chances are you’ve only visited the pot shop closest to your home.

Utah and it’s medical cannabis patients are approaching year three since herb sales legally began in the state during March of 2020. Although COVID-19 slowed the rollout of our state’s new green industry during its first year, all 14 licensed medical cannabis pharmacies have now opened their doors to patients
At Salt Baked City, we have the luxury of visiting the various green-crossed buildings found stretching from north to south on Interstate 15 quite often – which means we get to meet the smiling faces and experience all of the various Utah grown products they have to offer.
Although the regulations and laws that govern these new locations are consistent throughout the state – these various pharmacies are far from similar and have different qualities –making them very unique to one another.

You quickly bolt upright and wipe the drool from the corner of your mouth as you hear staff member Miki Zane say they are ready for you. She is all smiles and extremely reassuring that you have come to the right place for all your medical cannabis needs. There it is. You see it in the glass cabinet as you enter. True North Mint Mai Thai with a Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA) of 23 percent. The Indica base strain will help with pain and sleeplessness. The only question Zane has for you is “Will that be an eighth or a quarter?” She already knows what you are here for. You also spy some of Hygge’s new raspberry lemonade 50 mg. gummy cubes.
Trappers of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company traveled the Bear River until they reached the Cache Valley in 1824. They brought with them large amounts of beaver fur. The trappers would “cache” their goods in the large valley during the winter and return in the summer to pick up the cached furs and sell them. Thank God today there’s zero need to navigate the Bear River to reach Cache Valley. Hitch a ride with a friend and navigate toward Logan. No matter how you arrive in the Cache Valley take a moment to familiarize yourself with Perfect Earth Modern Apothecary, located on North Main Street Logan.
While waiting, it’s easy to drift off and daydream about all that great True North flower just beyond your reach in the other room.
Perfect Earth is only minutes away from Utah State University, home of the Aggies and Center Street, Logan’s art and historic district. Perfect Earth fits in well with everything Logan has got to offer. It is located in a quiet parking lot directly east of North Main. Its discreet location is easy to find and feels familiar the moment you enter.
Whileshortly.waiting,
Hygge is based in Garland, Box Elder County. Their stateof-the-art kitchen and grow sight is Riverside Farms and their gummies are very tasty and effective. I point at the gummies and Zane grabs a bag while Nate Renfro calls you out by name. He remembers everyone. It’s a reassuring feeling knowing the staff remembers their patients. As you wrap up loose ends and pay for your medication Zane and Renfro say goodbye as you turn and exit back into the same quiet, discreet parking lot you entered from. You look down and glimpse the beautiful sustainable brown paper bag in your hand it holds your medicine. Your personal green “cache” to take home. Your cache may not be the beaver pelts that Jim Bridger historically carried down the Bear River into the Cache Valley. But the green you have acquired is historically some of the first cannabis sold legally in decades here in Utah. Could it be that green medicine is the beaver pelt of the 21st century? Hmmm….could be.

FARMING, TRUCKS, AND CANNABIS IN BOX ELDER...OH MY!
Landon Martinez, and Zedd Sabbagh, will ease your fears with quick punch lines. If you aren’t laughing while visiting Brigham’s pot shop, you are doing it all wrong.
The Brigham pot shop was founded by patients for patients, according to Bijan Skaki, Owner of BFB.
There’s so much to choose from and it may leave the new patient feeling overwhelmed. Fear not! This is where Pharmacist, Mindy Madeo, shines.
Heading north on I-15 past Ogden, farm fields and tractors become a familiar sight. The oversize buildings begin to fade and instead are replaced by quaint homes on family farms. Box Elder county’s agriculture has been defined mostly by corn, safflower, and wheat but they have also added cannabis and hemp to the growing market.
the reputation of being expensive but once again Madeo comes through with discounts available for seniors, veterans, Medicaid, terminal, industry, and students. A Patient Program is in the works and will be unveiled in the near future.

The craft flower that lines the glistening glass shelves almost whisper “Pick me! Pick me!” You can’t take it all home but you can certainly dream about it. Among the craft flower, you will find Good Sun, Harvest of Utah, Releaf Society, Sugar House Select, Buzz flower, and Tryke. And soon Cookies will be launching exclusively through BFB.
BEEHIVE FARMACY
“It is a rural pharmacy which gives us plenty of time for one on one with patients,” says Madeo.
If hanging out at BFB is not your thing. No need to worry. They have you covered online as well. Beehive’s menu rivals big city pharmacies, so don’t count them out.
With her knowledge and her caring nature, she will have you fixed up in no time. Madeo wants nothing more than her patients to feel welcome and unafraid to ask questions. It’s a big green world out there and Madeo is well on her way to conquering it.
Anyone with a medical card is able to order prescriptions online and pick them up later at the pharmacy. Madeo is excited to announce delivery will be live by the end of the year.
The beauty of this store encompasses love, understanding, and most importantly knowledge of this great green plant. Leaving BFB you will feel educated and understood. This is crucial to BFB’s success.
- Mindy Madeo
Her plant knowledge is fierce. Currently, Madeo studies everything about cannabis and its medicinal properties. She’s on the fast track to being one of the first pharmacists with a degree from the University of Maryland encompassing nothing but Cannibis Sativa and all its amazing properties.
“It is a rural pharmacy which gives us plenty of time for one on one with patients,”
The cannabis market is growing and so is BFB. Maybe working in the cannabis market is something you have dreamed about. Dream no more! Madeo is looking for staff members. They do not have a job page at this time but are encouraged to send your resume to jobs@ Greenbeehivesown.com.medicinehas
Box Elder county has come a long way baby. And with continued support for the farmers dedicated to getting us our medicine nothing will stop Box Elder and BFB from continuing their growth in the medical cannabis market.

The atmosphere at Beehive is bustling, but it’s also a low-key and down-home feeling.
WHOLESOMECO
So far, so good. It seems both the pharmacy and their patients are heading in the right direction.
Located at 580 W. 100 N. in West Bountiful (and https://www.wholesome. co), WholesomeCo has already had over 17,500 patients visit them since opening their doors. A good start, but that number has a big potential to grow, Maloney says, especially considering their plans for the future.
WholesomeCo Takes Root in Bountiful
The results were immediate. Right away, more patients wanted to try it out, lots more. Moving forward, free delivery will remain a WholesomeCo perk, at least as far as the pharmacy’s head of retail Richard Maloney is concerned.
580 West 100 North Bountiful, UT 84010 Bountiful
“Products have been hitting the shelves with a consistent cadence and there’s less of a reason to actually come into the pharmacy now,” Maloney said.
“Delivery is where we believe the puck is going. People want their medicine delivered to their doorsteps the same way food is.”
Goals being realized in 2022 include rolling out an official rewards program, getting their products in all pharmacies statewide, an indoor cultivation and processing site, and creating a seamless debit card solution. They’re essentially building an Amazon-like experience for their audience.
Being able to successfully deliver medical marijuana to homes all across Utah was their first step, but WholesomeCo wanted to do more. When they celebrated their one-year anniversary last August, the pharmacy made ordering even more convenient by removing delivery fees altogether for 23 of Utah’s 29 counties, all the way from Provo to Ogden.
For they’re also asking plenty of questions — of themselves and others — about how they can do all they’re doing even better. It will help them to “be the bar,” as Maloney puts it, which is one of the pharmacy’s core values.
“We are aware of the market we are in, but we won’t let that dictate what we do as a company. We want to be as informative as we can and provide stateside access, and we don’t want outside factors to control anything we do,” he said. That will help WholesomeCo
Delivery is where we believe the puck is going. People want their medicine delivered to their doorsteps the same way food is.
“Using medicinal marijuana is still considered a little taboo, but I believe in the medicinal benefits of this medicine. We’re helping educate the market … and that’s what excites me and gets me out of bed every day.”
to further establish themselves as leaders in the industry.

WINTER 2022 | SALT BAKED CITY MAGAZINE | 26
“If we get sidetracked, that can inhibit what we do and offer. Instead, we want to set the standard and have others follow.”
Part of the unprecedented success of the medical marijuana movement in Utah can be directly attributed to those who aren’t always heralded for their efforts, which includes the Utah Department of Health. They’re helping patients become more familiar with all they’re trying to accomplish: they’re helping change others’ lives.

Murder, mayhem, bootlegging, secret tunnels, ladies of the night, and opium parlors are all subjects of Box Office Hollywood movies. But did you know Ogden is loaded with folklore including all of these? Historic 25th Street, sometimes referred to as “Two-bit Street” and “Electric Alley” were the staging location for these tales. Ogden’s status as a quiet town suddenly disappeared when Union Station was constructed in 1869. With Union Station came people and change. Lots of change. Similar to what we see happening currently with our medical green scene. Change is happening so quickly it’s tough to keep up. But Perfect Earth Modern Apothecary Ogden is.
Perfect Earth Ogden is the first pharmacy in Utah to offer a drive-thru. The building is a former bank but now it banks one of Utah’s finest choices of green medicine. The drive-thru gives patients a private and discreet option. It also allows patients the ability to maintain distance from others if that’s a concern.
You will also find brands such as Dragonfly, Life Elevated, Fruit of Life, and many more. Perfect Earth has a menu that includes flower, vapes, edibles, tinctures, topicals, and extracts. Don’t let the large selection worry you. The staff will help you with anything you need.
Gel cubes are a hit with patients throughout Utah. And TNO gel cubes in rapid release and extended-release formulas are created to medicate in minutes instead of hours. They are crafted with nanoemulsion. This is the act of combining small droplets of two liquids together. Doing this makes the cubes more easily absorbed and enables a higher amount of cannabinoids to absorb into the bloodstream at a much quicker rate. In short, you won’t be waiting hours for the edible to activate.

The clean lines and floor-to-ceiling glass are reminiscent of a greenhouse. The western sunlight shines through the large glass walls into an open space with glass cases filled with True North Organics brand, a sister company of PEMA. Patients are raving about TNO cannabis-infused liquid suspension. It’s like flavored soda pop. It offers explicit dosage with tasty flavors such as peach and strawberry. Sometimes patients may find a long activation period when it comes to edibles. This liquid suspension is easily digested giving it a quicker absorption rate. Meaning quicker activation.
Products and staff at PEMA have always stood out. The staff is kind and is committed to their patients. They want their patients to succeed by offering flower in cannapods. Cannapods give patients the opportunity to see and smell the flower without packaging before purchase. Doing this presents patients with more power over the product they choose.
Perfect Earth Ogden may not spur the legendary population growth or the folklore that Union Station did back in 1869 but only one visit to PEMA and you will find the legendary green you are looking for.

BLOC PHARMACY 1624 S Convention Center Dr St. George, UT

While no delivery is offered, BLOC’s South Jordan location does have a drive-through window in the works, which they have high hopes of utilizing in early 2022. As for other goals, they’ve a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality in place: They want to continue getting the word out about how they are serving their surrounding community. They want to let people know who they are, where they are, and what they can provide.
As for exceptional patient care, that will always be BLOC’s number one goal. One of the ways they’re able to demonstrate that priority is by helping match their patients with the products best suited for them.
Case in point: BLOC’s oldest regular is 92 years young. When Rigby started explaining to him about his medication early on, she used the word “euphoria” to help describe a possible side effect. He heard that and stopped her short. He didn’t want any of “that goofiness”. She understood what he meant by that and made the necessary adjustments.
And because Beehive now has a cultivation license, a new feather in their cap since last summer, they can control their own destiny a little better. With the license, they’ll be able to do something they couldn’t before — supply their fast-growing customer base with specific products they really want or need. While recognizing they are a newcomer to the space, Henderson used to watch over several hundred thousands square feet of marijuana plants while in California once upon a time. He had a fairly good idea of what they were getting into.
Beehive Farmacy in Salt Lake City celebrated its one-year anniversary in October, but they’ve been laying their stepping stones toward success for far longer than that: They’d been working together as a group for more than three-and-ahalf years before it became official.
Located at 1991 S. 3600 W. in Salt Lake City, in Brigham City at 870 W. 1150 S. Suite C, and online at www.beehivefarmacy.co, Beehive Farmacy offers discounts to veterans, and donate a significant amount of product to those who are in need.
To add to that, he felt like he and his co-owners had a real added advantage of knowing what kinds of products their patients would want locally. They understood the “Ourspace.sole

focus is to handle the state of Utah,” Henderson said, indicating that he and his partners have applied for the 15th retail license in Utah, with hopes to set up a third pharmacy in Moab in the near future.
Tens of thousands have passed through Beehive’s doors since they opened for the first time. It’s been less than 18 months since they’ve become a new and vibrant part of the community and they’ve already enrolled over 45,000 patients in their medical cannabis program.

“We spent time early on with licenses in neighboring states, but we understand the Utah market so well, we know Utahns want; we know what they want and we know what they like. So our values and interests are best served here.”
While delivery is not offered, it will be. They’re working on it and it’ll be a perk to add to the rest of their offerings very soon. Currently, Beehive’s customers simply aren’t demanding it. Beehive does happen to have a drive-through for patients in a hurry, however, and it suits them just fine.
While those are lofty numbers for any new business, they saw this coming: they’re about on par with what they initially predicted, according to Paul Henderson, one of Beehive’s three local owners. While the state expected lower numbers (a projected 16,000 in the first year), Beehive rightly thought it would be faster than that … and they were right.

As a whole, its team of cultivators, manufacturers, and dispensers boasts over 30 years of collective experience in the cannabis world. That means plenty. In the last decade alone, its team has both built and operated over a-dozen medical marijuana facilities (including nine dispensaries) in highly-regulated state medical programs.
Deseret Wellness doesn’t take that kind of responsibility lightly, either. According to the pharmacy’s website (www.deseretwellness.com), “We have seen medical cannabis transform patients’ lives for the better and we will use our firsthand experience to bring relief to patients in Utah.”
With two locations to serve their patients in both Park City and Provo, Deseret Wellness knows a lot about the world of cannabis-based therapy.

Curaleaf also hopes to educate its patients on how their products can best serve them personally.
Already widely known to many as a vertically integrated cannabis operator in the United States, Curaleaf opened its first retail location in Utah just over a year ago. The company received one of just 14 licenses in the state of Utah in 2019, breaking ground in Lehi, one of the fastest growing cities in the state and home to more than 50% of the state’s qualifying patients.

“Our passion for serving our [Utah] patients is reflected not only in our commitment to providing highquality products but also in our mission to educate our patients so they make empowered choices throughout their cannabis journeys.”
If this is the first time you’re hearing the Curaleaf name, chances are it means exactly what you think it does.
Veterans, industry members, and seniors (65 years of age or older) are each honored with daily discounts. First-time patients always receive an especially warm welcome: with your first purchase, you can buy another product of equal or lesser value at half its regular cost.
Curaleaf has provided its patients with quality cannabis for health and wellness purposes for the last decade or so, according to its website www.curaleaf.com, also learning how to cultivate the purest cannabis strains available along the way. As an established voice in the industry, the medical marijuana pharmacy considers its employees to be cultivators, creators, matchmakers, and guides.
Located near what may well be one of the busiest intersections in the state (3633 N. Thanksgiving Way), Curaleaf offers a wide variety of cannabis medications to its patients, including (and certainly not limited to) flower, vaporizers, concentrates, edibles, tinctures, topicals, and other related accessories.
Joe Bayern, CEO of Curaleaf, has said previously.

According to Jason Engle, Cannabist’s pharmacy operator, they’re succeeding and growing due to a fairly uncomplicated formula: they lean towards being more personable. Sometimes that’s all it really takes.

Because the pharmacy makes a point of employing agents that are eager to help, good customer service is helping them extend their reach. Its agents are excited and happy to help its customers, and that makes all the difference.
Located at 484 S. 1750 W. in Springville and online at https:// gocannabist.com, Cannabist’s patients can place their online orders in advance and the pharmacy will offer curbside service in the very near future. In addition to weekly discounts and a loyalty program, seniors and veterans also receive automatic discounts on any medications they purchase.
And because Cannabist offers one of the best selections of medical marijuana products in the state of Utah, chances are quite good you’ll find whatever you’re after by “Becausevisiting.
But that’s not all.
Only open since the 30th of April, Cannabist pharmacy in Springville has experienced record growth since its first day earlier this year. The pharmacy has gained more and more new patients since its opening day, an estimated 100-150 new patients weekly, for a current total of 2400+ returning patients thus far.
we’re in a small town, word does spread fast,” Engle says, noting that patients usually end up talking about Cannabist with their neighbors and friends. “We’ve really done well on this side of the mountain.”
“Our agents really are the bridge between our pharmacist and patients,” Engle says. “They’re really what makes the shop. Our patients have come to rely on them in so many ways.”

But they’re hardly resting on their laurels — if anything, the pharmacy is just getting started. By regularly attending cannabis expos and showing up at local farmers markets, Cannabist employees have fast become a regular presence of the close-knit community. The staff is eager to show that it does care for its patients, both current and prospective, taking time to educate its patients and providing a wealth of informational pamphlets and journals. This is how they will continue to grow and provide in and around the city.
Part of the reason for those climbing numbers is the care it passes on to its patients: everyone on staff strives to take their time with their first-timers, making certain everyone understands what is available and how it might help.
Agents are careful to answer all the questions they receive and no sales are ever rushed, allowing every person to pass through their door to get his or her due diligence.

Part of that learning experience includes correcting faulty information every chance they get. For instance, some wrongly believe that possessing a medical marijuana card means forfeiting your Second Amendment rights.
education is the other major goal moving forward. Davie wants patients to feel so comfortable with Bloom Medicinals that it’s seen as a familiar destination point when passing through.
Secondly, the pharmacy prides itself in offering the best local marijuana-themed education around, a likely reason for its rapid growth in a short period of time..
“We want to help educate you on all we can do, letting you know what our products can do as well as what it can’t do,” Sheb Davie, Bloom Medicinals’ onsite pharmacist, says.
“If they’re on their way to Bryce Canyon or Zion National Park and they don’t have their medication on hand,” Davie says, “we want them to know they can pop in and see us.”
As one of only two cannabis pharmacies in southern Utah, Cedar City’s Bloom Medicinals sets itself apart from the other 13 in two significant ways. One, it serves the budget-conscious: it strives to be affordable, offering its 800+ patients the lowest prices in the state.
If Bloom Medicinals receives its products at a lower cost, for example, that’s reflected in the price tag.
Located at 310 S. Main St. in Cedar City, Bloom Medicinals allows advance orders via its site www.bloomut.com as well as complimentary curbside pickup service. What’s more, for every dollar spent at the pharmacy, patients earn an automatic 5% savings towards all future purchases.
While delivery isn’t yet offered, the pharmacy very much wants to offer that service, and soon. Once it does so, the number of patients it’s able to cater to is set to increase. Already the pharmacy has grown rapidly from its original single pharmacist and two agents to three pharmacists and seven agents in under a years’ time.
As the first medical cannabis pharmacy to open in Southern Utah and just one of two pharmacies serving the area — St. George’s BLOC Pharmacy is the other — he knows there are many prospective patients they haven’t been able to provide for Continualyet.

The staff helps guide on the ways their products can serve to improve overall quality of life. They’ll help you decide what’s ultimately best for you, Davie says.
And from that point on, their friendliness and hospitality will take care of the rest.
According to Davie, nothing could be further from the truth. He stresses that nobody will ever have to choose between one and the other. Nobody will have to give up their firearms.
“We welcome everyone, even if it’s just to ask questions. We’re here to help everyone understand, he says. “How can we help improve your quality of life? We’ll make you aware of what can help.”

The word “cannabis” comes from the Hebrew word kneh-bosm, which means “aromatic reed.” The name was coined thanks to one organic compound found in the plant: terpenes.
Trichomes serve as a defense mechanism for cannabis in nature. They give off a strong
Myrcene, linalool, caryophyllene, humulene, limonene and pinene are some of the most commonly found terpenes in the cannabis plant. Each has their own unique scent, ranging from earthy to spicey, floral, and piney.
Opposingly, cannabis connoisseurs are attracted to these smells and can determine a lot about the type of a strain just from wafting an open jar.
But why does cannabis smell the way it does? Why is it so strong? And why can it smell like different things?
to THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids, terpenes play an important roll in the overall effects of cannabis. Terpenes provide additional therapeutic effects aside from the most looked-for “high” or “stoned” feeling.
Riots and protesting began to sweep the country and Utah was a hot spot. The more Tom became aware of the counterculture, the more he
A lot like the cars he raced down State Street, Tom blazed through school and in two and half years earned a degree with honors in Business Administration. Roommates recall Tom would
Friend of Salt Baked City and leading cannabis horticulture author Ed Rosenthal said, “If THC is the engine to the cannabis plant, terpenes are the steering wheel for its effects.” Although tiny, they are the directors of the THC high.
A rebellious side that was fueled by fast cars, whisky, and Coca-Cola, Tom decided to head north to attend the University of Utah after graduation. The surrounding Bonneville Salt Flats lured he and his souped-up Studebaker, and was soon terrorizing the streets of downtown Salt Lake City.
For example, limonene is the second most commonly found terpene in nature. Limonene is a derivative of the word “lemon” and is responsible for giving some Utah medical strains their citrusy notes. Ice Cream Man, Orange Zkittles, Orange Creamsicle, Mad Max, and Pink Starburst Petrol are just a few of the strains found in the Utah market that are typically high in Inlimonene.addition
Lab-tested products are the only way to identify which terpenes are present in a cannabis strain. To date, The Utah Department of Agriculture has not adopted this type of testing and only displays cannabinoid percentages.
The aroma of cannabis is hard to contain and immediately noticeable. Have you ever been walking down the street, gotten a loud whiff of flower, and instantly jerked your head to see where the smell was coming from?
Terpenes are fragrant oils located within the trichomes of cannabis. Trichomes are the resin glands of the cannabis plant that contain THC, CBD, CBN and other active medicinal cannabinoids. They appear as the “frosty” mushroom-like crystals that everyone loves to see on their flower.
Unlike other plants, cannabis has over 1,000 different terpenes. These terpenes vary within differing cannabis strains and provide each one with its own unique smell.
research terpenes on medical literature indexes like PubMed and Google Scholar for more information, or ask your friendly bud-tender next time you visit a Utah medical cannabis pharmacy.-Cole Fullmer
While in college his rebellion and focus on fast cars shifted to cannabis, psychedelics, and other drugs. According to classmates, smoking pot was normal for most students on campus and Tom was just like everybody else.
In the years Tom was in Utah, the country was starting to turn over on itself, and the radical movement had begun. Marines started their thunderous march into Da Nang, South Vietnam, African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist Malcolm X is assassinated in New York City, and the anti-war movement begins when the Pentagon requests the President Johnson to increase troops in Vietnam from 120,000 to 400,000.
Some describe the smell as pungent, while others consider it delightful. Whether you’re a Utah medical cannabis patient or not, the scent is undeniable.
There seems to be a family resemblance when it comes to terpene profiles, as a cannabis parent can pass down its scent to its descendant strains, called phytonutrients.

scent that deters unwanted animals and insects. They even work as sunblock from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
Although the fragrance of terpenes is its most notable attribute, each terpene also comes with a host of its own effects and medicinal benefits. Pinene can boost energy, while improving focus and memory. Limonene can provide users with an elevated mood and stress-relief. Linalool has helped consumers with anti-anxiety, pain relief, and sedation.

The distinctive smell of cannabis is universal, whether you’re a consumer or not.

Myrcene is the most commonly found terpene in cannabis and has an earthy smell. You can find high levels of myrcene in popular Utah medical strains like Garanimals, Sundae Driver, Purple Punch, Do-Si-Does, and Night Terror.
We now know every cannabis strain has its own unique terpene profile, much like fingerprints. We can use these profiles to consider individual affects, and to combine different compounds for a variety of benefits. When we are purposeful, we can create the perfect terpene cocktail, or pick the perfect strain at the pharmacy to ease our medical
Terpenes are hydrocarbons, a chemical compound consisting of hydrogen and carbon and located within the plant material. Terpenes are found in virtually every plant, and are what gives them their individual smells and tastes. Over 20,000 have been discovered and catalogued in nature.
Interestingly, some terpenes counteract the effects of THC – while others boost it. The most promising terpenes to utilize in coming down to earth when you get too lit are those found in lemons, black pepper, and pine nuts.

After the Joe Hill house was shut down in 1968, it was reopened by Hal Noakes and John Chanonat, editors of the Utah Free Press. Through this, Tom was introduced to the world of journalism and the power of the Underground Press Syndicate – and his life would never be the same again. . .

Leading the anti-war movement in Salt Lake City was Ammon Hennsey and Mary Lathrop. They opened the ‘Joe Hill House’, a Catholic Worker Movement house of hospitality located at 1462 South 400 West, two blocks away from the Vitro smokestack. This site was designed to provide social services and housing for the abundance of transients jumping off freights Hennsey felt the Salvation Army was ignoring. It was also the center for all anti-war activity in Utah.
Utah Product Guide: CARTRIDGES

Hennsey was known nationally for his autobiography, “The One-Man Revolution,” which consists of seventeen chapters, each one devoted to an American radical. Known for his anti-government beliefs and refusing to pay taxes, Hennsey would also show up during Utah state executions to protest and refuse to eat. He was a free-thinker and stood tall for what he
believed in and served prison time to prove it –and Tom idolized him.

Utah Product Guide: Concentrates Utah Product Guide: TOPICALS

Menstrual Pain/Endometriosis/Fibroids – Egyptians used cannabis infused honey medicinally for menstrual pain
Pharmacist Tips – I recommend patients start low and go slow when dosing for sexual enhancement. Too much will backfire, and you may get distracted and loose motivation. Experiment with solo play first before you involve your partner. Edibles may take too long and are inconsistent, so I’d recommend a small dose of inhaled cannabis along with a topical THC pre-lube. The ideal cultivar depends on the individual and the desired experience, but Lavender Jones has quite a few reviews and female fans reporting increased arousal and sensitivity. The topical pre-lubes should be applied to the vulva 20 min before you want to feel the effects. There is little systemic absorption when used vaginally. They are usually oil based which can break down latex so consider non-latex condoms or use only with a monogamous STD free partner. Don’t overdo the THC topical product. Too much sensation will backfire. As with all substances and sex, make sure ground rules and consent are discussed before consumption.

Products – Dragonfly Bath Salts, Kolibri 1:1:1 (THC:CBD:CBG) Tincture
and easing the uterine contractions associated with childbirth. The uterus is concentrated with endocannabinoid receptors. Uterine pain is where vaginal suppositories would be ideal. Until they are available in Utah it’s not too difficult to make your own at home using cocoa butter and Jilu distillate syringes that come in a variety of cannabinoid formulations. Look for THC, CBG and CBD for the most anti-inflammatory effects. Topical products, bath salts, or even a few drops of a tincture rubbed on your lower abdomen can provide some additional relief. I also recommend tinctures, edibles or inhaled flower with THC, CBD and CBG for uterine pain.
WEED AND SEX
Products –Boojum Myrcene tincture or edible, SHS Flower (all SHS cultivars I’d recommend for sleep)
Moms – Being a mom is overwhelming. Anxiety and stress can take a toll. Women want discreet products they can micro-dose because our busy over scheduled life requires productivity. Small amounts of an inhaled or edible product allow us to slow down, focus and connect with our loved ones. Try a cannabis infused beverage instead of that glass of wine at night. Micro-dosing cannabis pairs well with other self-care activities like mindfulness, meditation, yoga, exercise and quality sleep. Moms are looking for products that have just enough effects to help them relax in the evenings or during times of stress yet still be responsible and fully functional.

Menopausal Symptoms – Woman use cannabis for a variety of menopausal symptoms. Hot flashes, irritability, anxiety, depression and especially menopausal insomnia. Cannabis likely helps balance our hormones and gives us better rest at night. THC is the most important ingredient to look for in a sleep product. The terpene Myrcene may also be helpful. Look for more THC/CBN sleep specific formulations in the future.
Products – FOL Intimate Love Oil (Utah’s first pre-lube), Buzz Lavender Jones flower, Boojum massage bath oil
Cannabis is healing, nurturing and calming. This powerful medicine is found most concentrated in the flowers of only female plants. Cultivators go to great lengths to keep male plants out of the equation. Parallels are often drawn between the cannabis plant and powerful divine feminine energy. It’s ironic how cannabis…so feminine in nature…has historically been marketed more towards male consumers in this traditionally male dominated industry. Female cannabis consumption is increasing, and product selection is expanding to meet our unique needs. In Utah we are a minority of medical card holders.

Postpartum/Depression/PMS - Products with CBG and moderate amounts of THC tend to elevate your mood. I also recommend cultivars high in the terpene Limonene like Buzz White 99 or True North Sherb Crasher 6. Remember cannabis is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding moms.
Products - Jilu THC:CBG 1:1 Forbidden Fruit vape cart, Boojum THC:CBG Hibiscus Lime edible, Buzz White 99 flower, True North Sherb Crasher 6
Sexual Libido/Dyspareunia – If you don’t know already…cannabis is basically Viagra for the ladies. A small amount of inhaled cannabis can increase both the quantity and quality of orgasms. Cannabis decreases sexual pain, anxiety, body insecurity, sexual shame and inhibitions. It allows us to be focused and present and in touch with our bodies and connect with our partner. Topical THC applied to our most sensitive spots causes vasodilation and relaxation which allows more blood flow and greater sensation. Vaginal suppositories (not in the Utah market yet) also help amplify G-spot orgasms. How is this considered a medical use? Many women experience painful intercourse aka dyspareunia and vaginismus which are painful involuntary contractions often triggered by PTSD associated with a traumatic sexual event. Cannabis allows survivors of sexual abuse and trauma to connect with their partner and truly enjoy sexual pleasure.
DON’t forget your pets! www.healthyhemppet.com

For those many first-time visitors in Utah, one look at the menu board can make the head spin. Even having a casual conversation with a cannabis-savvy friend can feel like speaking a foreign language to the inexperienced.
You won’t be able to ask your budtender for advice when ordering online, but if you’re feeling anxious about visiting – this can be the best workaround. All of the various Utah medical cannabis pharmacies have websites with online menus available, and product descriptions, for instore or curbside pickup. Utah patients will need to register online with the pharmacy they want to use before their orders can be completed. Registration with these friendly pharmacies usually comes with random product discounts texted to your phone – so why not?

We recommend using your specific medical needs as a guide to choosing your consumption method. For example, if you suffer from arthritic pain, a topical cream might be the best selection. For headaches or inflammation, a tincture or vaporizer can provide instant relief. Insomnia? A high-THC concentrate or some potent cannabis flower might do the trick. If you want to just get relaxed without vaporizing, edibles could be an excellent choice.
LET THE BUDTENDER KNOW IT’S YOUR FIRST VISIT
Each type of product you’ll encounter in a Utah medical cannabis pharmacy will have its own timeline of impact. Edibles, for example, sometimes take 1.5 hours for the full effects to kick in – once your liver has broken down the THC – and those effects can last up to six hours. Tinctures, vaporizers, and cartridges will have more immediate effects that last for only a few hours.
Navigating through a Utah medical cannabis pharmacy is significantly easier when you know how to communicate with your budtender.

terpenes is done. Go into your medical cannabis pharmacy and express to your budtender the general sense of the feeling you’re hoping to achieve, and they will help guide you to the best products. Leave the Indica, Sativa, and hybrid discussion for your grower.

We all know smoking cannabis isn’t as bad for you as smoking cigarettes, but it’s still illegal to consume your cannabis with an open flame in Utah. Not everyone likes to smoke; however, especially if you have compromised lung health or are using cannabis for medical reasons. Vaporizing is a popular choice of consumption by Utah patients, but there are plenty of other smoke-free ways to consume cannabis and product selection is growing every day in our state’s market.
DON’T BE SHY!
Don’t be shy, this is a new industry for everybody in Utah. Medical cannabis products are changing by the day, new science is being discovered, and the Utah pharmacy shelves are ever changing – so there’s never a bad question. The happy budtenders you’ll meet are knowledgeable and eager to answer any inquiries you may have. Stay medicated and educated, Green Scene!
A budtender (we call them pharmacy associates in Utah, but some habits are hard to break at Salt Baked City) is a sales associate responsible for helping you select the best cannabis-related products to suit your medical needs. Most Utah pharmacy employees are highly trained professionals who can help with product information and consumption recommendations. Their goal is to help you become a loyal customer by matching you with products that meet your needs, and the best way for them to help make that match is through meaningful conversation.
It’s always a smart idea to let your budtender know if you’re a greenhorn to cannabis – you’re not alone in Utah. Once informed, they can suggest lower THC doses and recommend various tools they sell for easy consumption, like vaporizers and distillate cartridges.
HOW LONG DO YOU WANT THE EFFECTS TO LAST?
Forget everything you’ve ever heard about Indica, Sativa, or hybrids. Indica strains are known for their relaxing, sedative effects and are recognized for helping relieve pain and anxiety, while Sativas have been identified as more uplifting and energetic. All of those feelings are dependent on the individual cannabinoids and terpenes found in each cannabis strain. We learned in a past Salt-Baked article that Indicas, Sativas, and hybrids have many differences, but we only dealt with appearance, growth, and origins. Interestingly, it is still difficult to gauge possible effects until after testing for cannabinoids and
If you’re not visiting with a product already in mind, planning your search and questions before visiting can help significantly. Is there a consumption method you prefer? Are you looking to vaporize, eat, or apply your medical cannabis topically? Are you a seasoned consumer searching the dankest of the dank, or a novice looking for a low dose? Do you want speedy and strong effect, or a lasting impact that creeps up on you? There’s a lot to think about so read on, Green Scene.
HOW DO I WANT TO FEEL?
Here are some things to ask yourself, and your budtender, before your next pharmacy visit.

HOW DO I WANT TO CONSUME?
Medical cannabis consumers in Utah come from all walks-of-life and visit their local pharmacies for a variety of reasons. Some are patients undergoing chemotherapy looking for specific relief, while others are simply looking for rest and relaxation. Whatever spurred your visit to one of the state’s new cannabis shops, going in with purpose can help you and your budtender select the most effective products.
