MELUKOTE DOCUMENTATION

TEMPLES IN MELUKOTE tHE TEMPLES OF MELUKOTE ARE A COMBINATION OF Hundreds of years of history, architecture and rustic charm. There are 3 main temples in melukote 1. CHELUVA-NARAYANA SWAMY TEMPLE 2. YOGA-NARASIMHA SWAMY TEMPLE 3. KALYANI OR PUSHKARANI

CHELUVA-NARAYANA TEMPLE

SWAMY

It is the most important temple in Mandya.

Dedicated to Lord Cheluva-Narayana Swamy, the temple is also frequented by the Kings of Mysore. It has an exquisite collection of the jewels. There are three crowns presented to the temple which are kept saying and brought out on special occasions.It is located on the top of the Yadugiri hills and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. People belonging to the Vaishnava community consider it an important shrine.It is believed that Lord Rama visited the temple and worshiped here.

According to the Isvara Samhita, Lord Krishna took on the avatar of Lord Varaha when he lifted the earth out of the universal ocean. While doing so, a few drops of the water on his body fell on top of a hill at Melukote. This led to the creation of the Kalyani pond

According to the legends of the Matsya Purana, Lord Vishnu’s carrier, the eagle- Garuda carried white clay from Lord Vishnu’s planet, Svetadvipa and deposited it at the Kalyani.

YOGA NARASIMHA SWAMY TEMPLE

This temple located on the top of the hill. It is dedicated to the Lord Yoga Narasimha.

The King of Mysore had presented a gold crown to the Lord. The main deity is in seated posture with the Yogapatta. It is believed that the idol of Lord Yoganarasimha was installed in the temple

by Prahlada. The temple is considered to be one of the seven holy centers devoted to the worship of Narasimha

KALYANI PUSHKARANI

The Kalyani is a square shaped pond with steps on all four sides, surrounded by corridors held up by stone pillars. This ancient temple tank has a history spanning over 1000 years and is considered o be the largest of 108 temple tanks in the district. The Kalyani tank is at the base of the Yoga Narasimha temple. A variety of everyday and festive rituals associated with Melukote revolve around the Panchakalyani, making it a significant structure in the precinct.

KALYANI TANK- ENTRANCE MANDAPA & GOPURAM The Entrance of the Kalyani tank consists of a magnificent mandapa that leads to the Gopuram or the entrance gate which Significantly symbolizes the presence of the divine locus

spaces around the tank appear organized according to the Gopuras' influence on their design and layout. The Gopuras are built with a massive stone base and a superstructure of brick and pilasters. When viewed from the top, the Gopura resembles a Mandala with sculptures and carvings of Yakshas, Yalis, and mythical animals located in the outer enclosure.

CEILING PLAN

YAKSA A class of generally benevolent but sometimes mischievous, capricious, sexually rapacious, or even murderous nature spirits who are the custodians of treasures that are hidden in the earth and the roots of trees. They are powerful magicians and shape-shifters.

In concept, the crest of the Gopuram has the same significance of representing the central Brahmasthan which is the energy field of any building. This energy field in three dimensions travels to the top level of the temple's Gopuram, where it confers spiritual benefits to visitors.

These Gopurams are exquisitely decorated with sculptures and carvings and painted with several themes procured from Hindu mythology, particularly those associated with the woven history in and around the temple complex.
