The business community knows when they walk into Business After Hours they will be Elaine Wohler greeted by the smile of Elaine Wohler. As a dedicated volunteer on the Hospitality Task Force, it is a rarity that Elaine misses volunteering at the Check-in table at Business After Hours events. She has spent two Thursdays, sometimes three, a month helping operate After Hours events for the past three years. In her professional life, Elaine is the Head Teller for The Bank of Tescott, where she recently celebrated her 17th anniversary. When Rachel Adams, Elaine’s coworker and carpooling partner, was asked what she wished Business After Hours attendees knew about Elaine, it was hard to sum up in a sentence. Among the descriptors of outgoing, friendly, mother, grandmother, true friend, and smile was, “She is always willing to help others and gives 100% all the time.” Elaine says she likes being a part of the Hospitality Task Force because, “I enjoy people and communicating with all ages. It keeps me involved.” In addition to her volunteer work with the Chamber, Elaine volunteers for USD 305. “The first few Business After Hours after Don passed me the torch, Elaine was one of the friendly faces helping me get acclimated to running the Business After Hours events. After being on the team for nearly three years and myself being new, she was the pro, and I greatly appreciate her guidance throughout the event,” said Hayley Morrical.

2016 KDOT Fly Kansas Air Tour to stop in SLN! The KDOT sponsored 2016 Fly Kansas Air Tour marks the continuation of an event that was first conducted in aviation’s Golden Era from the 1930’s. History provides a backdrop for the 2016 Fly Kansas Air Tour event, stopping at airports that are plenty proud of their origins in World War II, and their contributions to our nation. Join us on Day 2 when Fly Kansas Air Tour participants land at SLN’s 12,300’ runway which started as the Smoky Hill Army Air Field (formerly Schilling AFB), one of the first bases for the AF Strategic Air Command. The tour participants will also talk about unmanned aircraft systems at SLN, and take a trip downtown to experience SculptureTour Salina. Tour participants will engage students and teachers to talk about the STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math). Salina welcomes the Fly Kansas Air Tour!

Ribbon Cuttings Meet Chamber Members Wayne & Peggy DeBey, Owners of The Flower Nook as you read excerpts from our 5-minute/ 5-question interview. Can you please give us a three sentence summary of your personal background? Peggy and Wayne met at Fort Hays State University in 1973 and have been partners in life and business ever since. They both believe in convening, networking, education and offering resources to fellow florist and the community. Each brings a unique presence to the store that creates a strong foundation.
Opportunity Knocks celebrated their Chamber membership and first outdoor market, Blue Barn Door, with a ribbon cutting marking the opening of Blue Barn Door’s gates. Follow them on Facebook to learn about future markets.
In general, how is demand for your product or service? There is an old saying in the industry that “you can never be too busy.” Our business relies heavily on phone and web orders which means a percent of our customers never enter our store location. Industry demand changes depending on season, economics, holidays and our local community’s celebrations such as birthdays, weddings, parties and funeral needs. It is because of that we must continually explore options to encourage the consumer to purchase our products.
The opening of the Greeley Street Bridge was celebrated with a Chamber ribbon cutting by our All America Team and city officials including Mayor Kaye Crawford.
