Jo Ann McClure, Convention Sales, promotes Salina as a convention and meeting Jo Ann McClure - Convention Sales destination. She works closely with Salina’s varied meeting venues, lodging facilities, and attractions to insure each meeting planner’s wants and needs are addressed. Meeting planners comment that Jo Ann’s dedication, resourcefulness and attention to detail is instrumental in helping host successful and memorable meetings and conventions.

Since joining the Visit Salina team in 2004, Jo Ann has worked to contract many groups from state and regional associations, reunions and military groups. Her efforts include trade shows, personal sales calls, sales blitzes, developing bid proposals and conducting site visits. She currently serves as the chair of Meet Kansas, a coalition of communities promoting Kansas as a meetings destination, and is an active committee member with the Kansas Society of Association Executives.

Jo Ann studied marketing at Cloud County Community College, and earned a BS in Business Administration / Finance at Kansas Wesleyan University. Her earlier work in the hospitality industry included front desk clerk to Director of Sales, Banquet Manager, and Revenue Manager with local hotels. Jo Ann spent several years on an advertising career path with the Salina Journal before Visit Salina pulled her back to the hospitality industry.

Jo Ann is married to Russell Schmidt. They enjoy traveling, cruising in their 1969 Corvette, and enjoying the company of family, friends and their dog and cat.

OCCK to host 25th Annual Employment Expo

The 25th Annual Employment Expo is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6th from 1- 6pm at Central Mall. The event is presented through a partnership between the Chamber, the Salina Journal, Rocking M Radio, Salina Human Resource Management Association (SHRMA), Salina Media Group, KansasWorks, and Workforce Solutions of OCCK, Inc. Area employers have the opportunity to set up a booth to talk about hiring needs of their business, both now and in the future. On-site interviews are encouraged. Job applicants are expected to come from all over the area. Rocking M Radio will have a live remote on site and employers will have the opportunity to voice their hiring needs live during the event.

Prospective employees are encouraged to attend to learn more about the hiring needs of businesses, brush up on their job search skills, and network with others.

KansasWorks will also have their mobile unit available for this event.

Leadership Salina Celebrates 30 Years of Change Leadership Salina has kicked off its 30th class series. Since the inaugural class of 19 participants in 1986, this program has evolved and grown to ensure its relevance and standard of excellence. Throughout its 30-year history, the mission has been constant – to cultivate community leaders.

The very first program was led by Chairman Lloyd Davidson, retired President of First Bank Kansas and former Chamber Board member.

In the early days the committee planned and implemented classes held from 4-9pm, with dinner served. Sessions were held lecture-style, featuring varied presenters and programs. Along the way, sessions became full-day commitments, and more interactive with activities, tours and experiences throughout the community.

About ten years ago, the Chamber’s Leadership Salina program merged with the Blueprint for Leadership Program of the Greater Salina Community Foundation. “I’ve always been very proud of the Leadership Salina program, but we believed we could take the best of both programs, build on them, and have a stronger product in the end,” explained Don Weiser, Chamber President, and staff liaison for the program since its inception.

With the merger came trained facilitators who develop the curriculum and organize the sessions. “As a Leadership Salina facilitator, I help people create the life they want, the change 4

they desire, and the culture they imagine,” said Michelle Peck, in her fifth year as a facilitator. Betsy Wearing, one of the developers of Blueprint for Leadership, has returned to facilitation, joined by Amanda Michaelis, a recent graduate of the Executive Leadership Development Program for United Way World Wide.

Now in partnership with the Kansas Leadership Center in Wichita, the curriculum follows these competencies – Manage Self, Diagnose Situation, Energize Others and Intervene Skillfully. Team building, building relationships within the class, becoming more aware of the community as a whole, and discussing challenges facing Salina are all part of the three-month experience.

An important facet of today’s program is the Group Project component, wherein class members have an opportunity to use their leadership skills for the direct betterment of the community.

There have been 628 graduates of the Leadership Salina program since it began in 1986. Several ‘alums’ have become part of the Salina chapter of the Kansas Leadership Center’s Alumni Network – the Konza Club. This group hosts monthly and quarterly events for members, and projects have included partnerships with Circles of the Heartland and Salina Area Young Professionals and a micro-funding event to provide seed money to worthy projects. MarqueeWelcomes September 5-7 The League of Kansas Municipalities Board of Directors is gathering in Salina for their September meeting at the Holiday Inn. Participants will arrive from across the state on September 10 and enjoy an outing at Blue Skye Brewery & Eats.

Kansas Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (KAHRO) will meet in Salina for three days beginning September 16. Several local professionals have been asked to speak on special housing topics during the event. Nearly 70 attendees are expected.

Salina Bids on Basketball!

A proposal to consider Salina as the host for the NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship in 2018, 2019 and 2020 has been submitted.

Tiffany Benien, Visit Salina Sports & Events, stated, “Salina has long had a good relationship with the NJCAA, and we believe we are the perfect fit for this event.

Our proposal is quite comprehensive. Beyond addressing the necessary facilities and amenities a host must have, our strategy was to emphasize what makes Salina unique.

Our intent is to help the NJCAA justify changing the event location to Salina from Danville, IL where it has been for more than a decade.” Not an easy task.

What did our proposal highlight?

•

Experience and expertise, grown through hosting the NJCAA Women’s Div I Basketball National Championship for 18 years (1998-2015), the KSHSAA Boys’ & Girls’ State Championships for decades, and the Big 8 Women’s Tournament prior to the NJCAA coming to town.

•

$13.1 million in improvements at the Bicentennial Center. Scheduled for completion this fall, the renovation includes a modernized exterior, extensive updates to the ticketing operation, locker rooms, Arena VIP seating and signage, public restrooms, concourse area, and lobby. The Center is also home to “Kurt Budke Court”, which resonates with the NJCAA.

•

Location, location, location… Our central location makes Salina an ideal choice for a national tournament. Plus, Salina is less than one hour from Hutchinson, KS, home to the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. We believe this provides an advantage to NJCAA staff, coaches, recruiters and media.

Francis Flax, former AD/Men’s Basketball Coach for Brown Mackie College.

Flax has a long history with the NJCAA and is highly respected. He is a strong proponent of bringing the event to Salina, and will serve as Salina’s Tournament Director, working with Benien to coordinate the event.

Visit Salina and Bicentennial Center staff recruited volunteers to shoot an innovative, informative video at the Center. The overall video message is “Join us in Salina, March 2018.”

If Salina is selected, 16 men’s basketball teams would arrive for a Tuesday through Saturday tournament at the Bicentennial Center each March. In addition to players, media and fans, the event has the potential to attract many four-year collegiate recruiting coaches. The event would mean a significant impact to Salina’s economy.

The NJCAA Championship Events Selection Committee will have until April 2016 at the NJCAA Annual Meeting to declare their event site selections. Through April, they may request additional information and/or come for a site visit, which we have encouraged.

Sunflower partnered with local Make-A-Wish chapters from April 1st through June 30th to raise funds and awareness for this important cause.

Don Weiser Elected to CCEKS

Chamber President Don Weiser has been elected to the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Kansas Don Weiser (CCEKS) Board of Directors. He will fulfill the remaining year of an outstanding term, and then will be eligible to serve a full two-year term. This is not Don’s first stint on the Board however, as he previously served when the organization was known as the Kansas Chamber of Commerce Executives.

“When this position came open, the nominating committee immediately thought of Don as the natural appointment to fulfill the open term.

Throughout the state as well as the Chamber industry, Don Weiser is well respected for his expertise and known for his consistently positive, friendly and professional demeanor. We are so pleased Don will join us on the Board of Directors and I, personally, am excited to get to work with Don at this level,” stated Tammy Wellbrock, Hays Chamber/CCEKS President.

In addition to sitting on the Board, Weiser was also confirmed as the CCEKS Membership Committee Chair.

CCEKS’s purpose is to advance close unity and relationships in Chamber of Commerce management in the State of Kansas, and promoting and encouraging higher professional standards for the men and women engaged in the Chamber of Commerce management profession.
