OPERATION: Decorate Downtown!

Don’t you LOVE seeing downtown decorated for the holidays?

Last year, we were delighted to roll out the new holiday decorations, with lights lining the overhead crosswalks on Santa Fe, big 5’ wreaths centered in the middle and 16 holiday banners hanging from the large poles at the intersections. Those decorations were purchased by the generous donations of local businesses and individuals along with $10,000 from the Business Improvement District’s budget. Having a beautiful downtown sends a message to everyone in this community and visitors alike that we are proud of our downtown!

Help us send that message even louder! Please consider donating to our project fund at the Greater Salina Community Foundation. Your entire donation goes directly to the purchase of these decorations. You can be proud, knowing that you had a part in making downtown Salina SPARKLE this holiday season!

More than Half a Century of Agricultural Tradition The 52nd Kansas All Breeds Junior Dairy Show will be held August 17-19 at the Saline County Livestock & Expo Center in Kenwood Park. This event is a partnership between the Kansas Dairy Commission, Kansas Dairy Association, and the Ag Division of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce. On average, 98 animals are entered each year, from about 40 Kansas dairy families.

The event is an opportunity for young showmen from across the state of Kansas to come together to share their love of dairy animals and the industry as a whole. It’s also a time-honored tradition for many ag families. Youth compete in a variety of show ring events, at varying levels, including: the Skill-A-Thon, Fitting and Showing, and Breed Judging. But it doesn’t stop there. The Quiz Bowl on Friday tests them on an intellectual level as well.

Several Memorial Awards are presented during the show.

Through an application and interview process, the W. Harold

Skelly Leadership Award honors a long-time Salina volunteer.

The Wendell Morrison Memorial Trophy for Herdsman (Clean Stall Trophy) is provided by the Morrison family to commemorate his work in the show and in 4-H. The first place winner of the County Herd Competition receives the T. Hobart McVay Memorial Traveling Trophy for one year.

Through his life’s work Kansas became known worldwide for exceptional Holstein bloodlines.

Your Chamber provides event support in the areas of contacting judges and superintendents for the show, obtaining sponsorships, mailing info to all 4-H exhibitors, printing of the results show books Photo by Tom Dorsey - Salina Journal for exhibitors, assisting in show setup, sanitization, teardown, people to work serving lunch and banquet meals, and bookkeeping for the event. The Chamber is proud to be a part of an event that typifies the hard work and importance of the ag industry in Kansas.

August Brings the Tri-Rivers Fair & Rodeo!

For many, the Tri-Rivers Fair & Rodeo is our annual sign-off to summer, and last hurrah before the start of the school term.

The fair is in swing August 9-13 this year, headquartered at the Saline County Livestock and Expo Center in Kenwood Park.

For participants, it can segue to the Kansas State Fair, for others, a business opportunity, and for others still great entertainment and family time.

Some of the highlights and fan favorites each day are: • Tuesday: the Parade down Santa Fe, 7pm; • Carnival wristband night Wed-Sun, 6pm; • Wednesday: Crowning of the King and Queen, 7:30pm; Rodeo, 8pm; • Thursday: Kids Pedal Tractor Pull, 5:30pm; Rodeo, 8pm; • Friday: Demo Derby, 8pm; • Saturday: CO2 Car Racing, Noon; Draft Horse Team Pull, 7pm, Demo Derby, 8pm.

An important cattle group has decided to not ‘moo-ve’ from Salina just yet! The ADCA National Dexter Show and Sale has signed to extend their contract for Salina to host their national event in June 2018. Upon completion of a success national show at Saline County Livestock & Expo Center this year, the association board made the decision to return to Salina.

Despite very hot days with us, they appreciated our hospitality – including frozen bottled water, popsicles and Kenwood Cove passes from Visit Salina – and how the event was hosted by the SCLEC staff. We look forward to working with them again!

During July, four separate state associations held Board of Directors’ meetings in Salina, specifically to include site visits for hosting potential conventions here. Jo Ann McClure, our Convention/Meetings Manager met with each to outline how Visit Salina will work with them toward a successful event!

In The News

SALINA ARTS & HUMANITIES, 211 W. Iron, and 18 other community partners have been awarded $130,000 over the next three years by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation and Greater Salina Community Foundation. Grant funds will be used to help in the professional development of artists, integrate arts with healing, and utilize artists as part of downtown revitalization. The project will be headquartered at 144 S. Santa Fe later this fall.

SALINA COMMUNITY THEATRE, 300 W. Iron, has hired Megan Carol Coberly as their new Education Director. Megan has a BS in Education from Friends University and is completing her Master of Science with Emporia State University. She is a Salina native, and has been involved with SCT her entire life. Since returning to Salina two years ago, Megan has been a teacher, volunteer, and choreographer with the theatre. Megan begins teaching in the Fall semester, and will produce the Fall CTA production of the children’s musical “Big Nate”.

SUPERIOR PLUMBING & HEATING CO., 1645 Copper Court, an industrial and commercial mechanical plumbing company formed in 1979, recently acquired SOUTH INDUSTRIAL SHEET METAL COMPANY, a 4th generation sheet metal manufacturing company, located in Salina for over 50 years. South Industrial Sheet Metal specializes in all areas of sheet metal and structural steel fabrication for agricultural, commercial and industrial customers. Specialties include: environmental control, sand blasting, and a wide variety of other metal related projects.

Commercial electrical contractor, HEINEKEN ELECTRIC COMPANY, Inc. has completed the construction of a new facility in Salina at 1627 Sunflower Lane. The new building totals over 14,000 sq ft including a three-bay warehouse for vehicle fleet maintenance, parts storage, parts distribution and a pre-fabrication assembly area; plus a conference room and offices. They are headquartered in Beloit, and also have

a branch in Manhattan. The expansion will promote smoother operations among their three locations. Kyle Heineken is owner and president.

Troy Harding, computer systems technology professor at KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY POLYTECHNIC CAMPUS, 2310 Centennial Rd., has been named the recipient of the 2017 Rex McArthur Family Faculty Fellow Award.

The McArthur distinction annually recognizes a Kansas State Polytechnic professor for teaching excellence, a commitment to research and honorable services to the university, college and community. A professor at Kansas State Polytechnic since 1999, Harding has taught classes in programming, system and data administration, web development and IT support. He also created a class on the development of mobile apps after researching the topic for the university.

Lisa Larson, RN, MSN, clinical assistant professor, will serve as the assistant dean of the KU SCHOOL OF NURSING SALINA campus. Lisa completed her bachelor’s degree at Missouri Western State College, a master’s degree in Nursing Administration and a postmaster’s certificate in nursing education from Fort Hays State University. She is currently attending the KU School of Nursing’s PhD program with a minor in nursing informatics. She has lived and worked in Salina since 2002, in various nursing positions. The School of Nursing is pleased to have Lisa onboard with the opening of the Salina Campus this fall.

Pam Geihsler is the new executive director of the SALINA TECH FOUNDATION. In her role at Salina Tech, she will coordinate the college’s fundraising activities, seek out potential grant opportunities and cultivate and maintain relationships with alumni.

Chris Giroux has joined WADDELL & REED, 2036 S. Ohio, as an executive director of practice management development for central Kansas. Giroux will help serve the financial needs of the community in several capacities, including building and leading a team of financial advisors, providing professional development, building upon rapport with veteran advisors, all in growing Waddell & Reed’s presence in the area.

Ambassador of the Month Steve Murrison is the Chamber’s “Ambassador of the Month” for July.

Steve continues his success as an Ambassador with Steve Murrison three new members in July. He has 11 new members to his credit this year! “Steve is fairly new to the Ambassador team, and we are very proud of his performance,” said Don Weiser, President/CEO of the Chamber. In general, how is demand for your product or service?

We believe demand is up because people enjoy the opportunity of having a healthier alternative for quick service food options. In addition to healthy selections people like the idea of customizability, which is the basis of our menu.

How long have you been in business and why are you operating in the Salina region?

We started initially with a food truck a little over a year ago. We operate mostly in Salina because that is where we are from.

HIGHWAY & TRANSPORTATION (COMMITTEE) Chairman - Jack Fleming Bd. Reps. - Orville Boyle, Harold Brown, Ted Oehlert The future of the Interstate Highway Program was the subject of discussions of the Highway and Transportation Committee who met with Frank Virr, Assistant State Highway Engineer. Virr told the group that unless Congress appropriates additional funds to the states, the program will suffer a serious slowdown, which in turn will deliver a heavy blow to the economy both on the local and national level. The committee agreed unanimously to take some action to keep the highway program rolling.
