Smart Business!

The Cozy Inn has been firmly placed in downtown Salina since 1922, with its unique smell wafting through the air ensuring that no other place in Kansas can serve you up a slider quite like this one. Upon entering the burger joint, it’s not uncommon to hear a friendly voice behind the grill greeting you with a smile and “Have you been here before?” followed by “Where are you from?” and “How did you hear about us?” Steve Howard, owner of The Cozy Inn since 2007, enjoys getting to know each one of his customers. On a typical day you can find daughter Andrea and son Landon behind the grill waiting to serve you cozies by the bag. Daily, they continually hear how far people have traveled, to try their famous burgers. That’s when Steve thought of the pin map. Beginning in June, Steve hung a map of the United States on the wall of his tiny burger joint, and encouraged customers to pin where they are from. In just 30 days, the map had hundreds of pins spanning from across the world; from Germany to Japan!

While visiting Salina, Sabine Ware was happy to add her mark to the trio of pins on Australia and added “What a tasty little burger joint”!

With so many pins marking the month of June, Steve plans on changing the map out monthly.

Stop in, grab a bag of cozies and make your mark on the map!

Kudos to Steve for both taking the initiative to track his business sources, AND training his staff to do the same. SDI and the Chamber want to know…

Tiffany is passionate that Salina is a great city to promote as a destination for sports and Tiffany Benien - Visit Salina Sports special events, which attract visitors and create & Special Events Manager a significant influx of new dollars into the Salina community. She works closely with local facility staff, such as the Salina Bicentennial Center, Salina Parks and Recreation, and USD #305, among others, to promote all Salina has to offer. Her clients include KSHSAA (Kansas State High School Activities Association) for state championships in baseball, basketball, football, softball, volleyball, and wrestling; KS ASA (Amateur Softball Association) Tournaments; the NJCAA, the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular Car Show, Fool’s Day 5K Glow Run, golf tournaments, and others. Vital to her work are scores of community volunteers, which Tiffany recruits, directs and builds strong relationships with so that Salina’s events can be successful.

Tiffany began working for the Chamber in 1995. Prior to the Chamber, Tiffany attended Kansas Wesleyan University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business. Tiffany was a Coyote Volleyball and Softball player. She is a native of the Salina area, attending high school in Bennington. Tiffany and husband, Jeromy, enjoy the outdoors, softball, volleyball, and travel. Their daughter, Rylee, 6, share their love of sports and the outdoors.

All Breeds Junior Dairy Show August 13-15

Dairy cattle from across the state will compete for prizes, ribbons and cash at the annual Kansas All Breeds Junior Dairy Show August 13-15 at the Saline County Livestock and Expo Center. In its 50th year, the show is the largest gathering of 4-H and youth dairy members in the state. Approximately 125 head of cattle will be entered, representing approximately 100 youth from about 25 Kansas counties.

Activities include a Quiz Bowl, Judging School, Fitting and Showing Competition, General Judging Competition and County Herd Competition.

The show is sponsored by the Ag Division of the Chamber, in cooperation with Kansas State University, the Kansas Dairy Commission, and Kansas Dairy Association.

Wage and Benefit Survey Completed

The 2015 Salina Wage and Benefit Survey is complete. Wage and benefit information was submitted by 65 companies representing 2,133 hourly and 3,311 salary employees.

The high, low and average wages were calculated using a spread sheet program. The program extracts the high and low wages, and also calculates the average wage from the data entered for each specific occupation.

The survey is on the Chamber website and you may access it at www.salinakansas. org. At the top of the homepage is a quick link to the Members Only section. USD 305 Bond Project Progressing as Planned Story provided by USD 305

The $110 million school bond project at Salina USD 305 is on schedule and under budget as of July 2015. All USD 305 buildings are in construction or design mode and active building is underway at Coronado, Oakdale, Cottonwood, Meadowlark Ridge, Lakewood Middle School and Heartland. Heusner’s construction bid was approved on July 14 and is set to begin construction in August.

Construction will begin at South Middle School in October and Schilling, Stewart and Sunset schools will be under construction by December. Nearly a dozen buildings will have active construction sites by the start of 2016.

With a total of seven construction bids approved so far, the cost has been $1.8 million less than projected, or 10 percent under budget. However, work has not yet started on the high schools – the two biggest projects.

The eight elementary schools and two middle schools were designed and bid separately to maximize local involvement. As of July, three of the seven general contractors working the active sites are from Salina. Forty-two percent of subcontractors involved are based in Saline County and 95 percent are based in Kansas. Additionally, three local architect firms, JGR; Bieberly Architects; and DMA Architects, PA designed the elementary, middle schools and support buildings (Opportunity Now, Salina Adult Education Center, Hageman and Heartland).

Students return to school August 11 and building work is

being planned to avoid disruptions. Since last Spring the bond office and school personnel have been collaborating about the phasing of building changes. They’ve produced plans that connect past needs for space with reallocated and newly created spaces. Learning will take place as always, but a creative use of space will be necessary at times.

Both Central and South high schools have had their schematic designs approved and construction will begin this fall. Work on the structural foundation is expected to start at South in November with Central following in December. The plans aim to have concrete work completed before the ground freezes so that steel can be erected during the winter.

At South High School no old classrooms (pods) will be taken down until a new east wing is ready to open. The plan will avoid the expense of temporary classrooms.

At Central High School a twostory media center will be located in the middle of the building with administrative offices and the main entrance moved to the north side of the building.

Approved by the community in April 2014, the USD 305 bond addresses district needs including safety and security, all-day kindergarten, career and technical education and improvements at both high schools.

Two Salina business leaders were recognized in the June issue of Ingram’s magazine as among “50 Kansans You Should Know”. Frieda Mai Weis, President of PKM Steel and Jeff Thompson, CEO of Vortex, are now a part of 250 prominent Kansans who have been recognized to date by the publication. Weis currently serves on the Chamber Board of Directors, and Thompson has previously served on the board. The Chamber congratulates both and thanks them for their service to the Salina business community!

VISIT SALINA

MarqueeWelcomes Planners for the LIVE WELL SALINE COUNTY State Wide Conference expect nearly 120 delegates to attend August 4 at the Salina Bicentennial Center.

On August 15, the Salina Country Club will be hosting Officer Candidate Ball. The celebration for over 120 people will include graduation of OCS, dinner and dance.

ABBB Partners are hosting a meeting at the Holiday Inn. August 20-22. Delegates will visit the downtown area for an evening.

Good Sports!

The 6th Annual Fools Day 5K Glow Run will be held at Bill Burke Park on August 22nd, with more than 500 participants expected. Events begin at 8pm, with races starting at 8:45pm. This is the second year the event is being held in August, to avoid complications with cold weather and conflicts with other events that the original April date presented. This event to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, is loaded with fun! There is a costume contest, glow-in-the-dark body painting, music, dancing - Kansas’ largest Cupid Shuffle – awards, medals, t-shirts, a beer garden, and pizza for participants. There are 1 mile and 5k distances, and three ways to register: in advance at www.foolsday5k.com, the day before the run at Salina Running Company, 122 S. Santa Fe, or at the park the night of the event, with registration fees increasing as the event draws closer. Volunteers are still needed as well. Go to the website for details.

With more than 220 softball players from across Kansas, and beyond, expected to participate, the annual Sunflower Bank Softball Showcase August 7-8 will involve more than 600 people, including family members and coaches. The Opening Event will be at Kansas Wesleyan University, with play underway at Bill Burke Park.

Coming This Fall…Mid Kansas Cup! New this year, the Salina Soccer Club has partnered with Challenger Sports to host an end of season fall tournament.

The 2015 Mid-Kansas Cup a.k.a. MK CUP is open to all levels of teams, Boys U8 to U15 & Girls U8 to U15. Gold, Silver and Bronze Divisions will be available. The MK CUP will be played October 16-18 at the Salina Soccer Complex. Registration is now open. Deadline to register is September 18. SALINA FAMILY HEALTHCARE CENTER is very pleased to announce that Dr. Leah Peterson, MD, and Abbey Rupe, MD, have been selected to join the Smoky Hill Family Medical Residency Program Faculty Physicians. Dr. Peterson is a native of Salina and received both her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Kansas. Dr. Rupe received a B.A. in microbiology from the University of Kansas and her M.D. degree from the University of Kansas School of MedicineWichita, and is board certified in pediatrics.

Both are accepting new patients at the Center, in addition to training family medicine residents for future practice in rural Kansas.

Kevin came to Salina from Providence, RI in March of 2014 as the Bicentennial Center’s Director of Marketing.
