PepperJax Grill, celebrated their Grand Opening with an official Chamber ribbon cutting ceremony!

PepperJax Grill Opening Event Supports Local Military

The Salina Military Affairs Council was awarded a check of more than $1,000 by PepperJax Grill, 3015 S. Ninth Street, to benefit their Emergency Fund. The funds were raised during their June 6 soft opening event.

PepperJax is one of the newest additions to the Salina business community. A Chamber ribbon cutting was held June 20 to celebrate the opening of the restaurant, and so Taylor Day, District Manager, could present a ‘check’ to SMAC Chair Vern Hopkins.

Taylor shared that there are currently 41 PepperJax Grill locations across the Midwest. The restaurant is known for their Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches, and also have a buildyour-own salad, Philly rice bowl, loaded fries and nachos on the menu. “We’ve refreshed our brand – some of you who’ve been to a PepperJax Grill may have noticed a slightly different logo… and Salina is the first location to get a glimpse of that new look – so you all should feel very excited to be a part of that rebrand!”

Summer activities are planned, including a ‘Register to Win’ opportunity for a mountain bike and helmet going on now. There will be a Scavenger Hunt in the community for gift cards every Friday in July. Watch the PepperJax Grill Facebook page for clues. The home office for PepperJax Grill is in Denver, and Local Store Marketing Manager Sharon Wilkinson commented on the convenience of Great Lakes Airlines’ direct flight to/from Salina. Business Hall Of Fame Nominations Sought

Nominations are being solicited for the 2017 Salina Business Hall of Fame.

Application forms are available at the Chamber office, 120 W. Ash, or can be downloaded on the Chamber’s website. The induction ceremony will be held in the fall.

The deadline for nominations is July 7.

KKOA Leadsled Spectacular!

It’s more than a KOOL car show!

For 13 consecutive years, Salina has welcomed those KRAZY KRUISERS with the Kustom Kemps of America (KKOA)! This event continues to grow and change and bring a fun group of visitors to Salina.

On Thursday evening, July 27 is the 7th Annual Spectacular Sundown Cruise where hotrodders will make passes up and down Santa Fe in front of jampacked sidewalks of spectators.

The cruise will begin at 7:30pm and is free and open to the public.

It’s a great way to get a glimpse of what you’ll see in Oakdale Park over the weekend.

The main event, the Kustom Hotrod Show & Shine, makes Oakdale Park the koolest place to be, where an estimated 1800+ Kustom Kemps, Hotrods, Drag Machines and their drivers will descend upon their annual nationwide Leadsled Spectacular event Friday, Saturday and Sunday July 28-30. While the show will feature the great ol’school cars, the featured events are a BIG part of the fun.

At the big Show and Shine you’ll see Hollywood celebrities, Pin Up & Lookers Beauty Contests, Vintage Spoke-tacular Bicycle Show, legendary Hall of Fame kustom car builders, automotive vendors, pin stripers, swappers, Model Car & Truck Spectacular, and food vendors. Two stages feature Live Rock & Roll and Rock-A-Billy music. Don’t miss top-chopping cars on site at the Backyard and Godzilla Garage with California customizers Bill Hines and Keith Dean. On Sunday, $5,000 in cash awards and the “Top 25” coveted awards will be presented at the Spectacular Awards Ceremony.

The Spectacular Ol’ School Vintage Market Place was a new addition in 2016. This vendor expo features vintage, repurposed and retro home goods, vintage 40’s, 50’s boutique dress apparel, jewelry, watches, kitchen appliances, home architectural salvage décor, windows, trim, fencing, patio furniture, and anything old, used or kool! The market place will be held at the Saline County Expo Center Friday-Saturday July 28-29.

Always a BIG draw of the event is the “Run-Whatcha’Brung Friday Evening Drags” south of Dean Evans Stadium just off Markley Road. Drags start at 5pm and run until dusk.

Watch 100s of hotrods, kustoms, and special exhibition drag cars making eighth-mile passes down the legendary old Salina Airport runway, where they staged professional drag races in the 50s.

Admission is $10 per person for bleacher area seating.

Don’t miss Donny Edwards, “the #1, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s Elvis performer in show biz today,” according to KKOA President Jerry Titus. Bill Holden is also returning for an unbelievable evening of traditional rock ‘n roll. The show is Saturday night, July 29 at 8pm in the Stiefel Theatre downtown. Tickets are $25, sold on a firstcome first-served basis.

Come and experience why Elvis Presley was, and still remains today, The King of Rock & Roll.

Admission to the show is by day pass, available at the gate: $12 on Friday, $15 on Saturday, and $10 on Sunday. Kids 12 and under are FREE. Tony’s pizza plant looks to hire 170 Schwan’s Company, which owns and operates the Tony’s pizza manufacturing facility in Salina, announced that the plant and warehouse are gearing up to fill 170 open positions. The company is hiring for production line attendants, sanitation associates, maintenance team members and more. The company also announced a $2-an-hour wage increase which translates to a $5 million investment annually. In addition to the wage increase, the company also expanded its shift differential compensation, paying employees an extra $1.50 per hour if they work between 6pm and 6am.

The company held a job fair at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center Wednesday and Thursday, June 28 & 29, and on Wednesday morning at the Meridian Center in Newton, KS. Anyone interested in learning more about the company’s open position can visit www.schwansjobs.com.

“We are looking for great people to join our Tony’s team, and with this latest wage adjustment, people working the late shifts will be starting at $15 an hour,” said Todd Clark, senior director of manufacturing at the Tony’s Pizza manufacturing facility. “We are offering steady, full-time work with a well-established food company where you can grow your career.”

Clark, who began working at the Tony’s facility early this year, said Schwan’s will invest between $30 and $40 million in plan upgrades in 2017. Upgrades include new production equipment and renovating employee break rooms and bathrooms. These investments follow an approximate $35 million investment last year.

“The level of investment Schwan’s is making in physical plant renovations, payroll enhancements and new jobs is tremendous,” said Don Weiser, President/CEO of the Chamber. “Schwan’s has long played a significant role in the Salina economy, and has been a strong supporter and partner of the Chamber. Congratulations!”

“Our goal is to continuously improve our overall employee experience. We have a great group of dedicated team members at our facilities who work each day to provide quality pizzas to our customers,” Clark said. “We wanted to show our teams that we appreciate the work they are doing and show that we have a strong commitment to the Salina community.”

The announcements were made to employees on Friday, June 23rd during a town-hall meeting at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

Good Sports

The Kansas Grand Slam Baseball Tournament, a fixture in Salina baseball, will celebrate its 27th anniversary this year! The tournament will be held July 1-4 at the East Crawford Recreation Area.

Fourteen teams in the 19-Under and 17-Under age divisions from Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma will compete in pool play and bracket play over a four-day period at Dean Evans Stadium and James Matson Field. Six teams will compete in the 19-Under division and eight in the 17-Under.

The wood bat tournament, which also features Salina’s two American Legion teams - the Falcons and Hawks - begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 1. The championship games will be held Tuesday afternoon on July 4, with the 17-Under division deciding the title on James Matson Field at 2:30pm and the 19-Under division holding its championship game at Dean Evans Stadium at 3 p.m.

Admission Prices: $5 per day for adults 18 and over; $3 per day for 10-17 year olds; 9 and under are free. An individual tournament pass is $15. For more tournament information, go to: http://www.kansasgrandslam.org.

While summer is not a common time for conventions to be held, it’s a great time for board planning!

Dr. Farhan Naeem Khan, DMD, graduated from Altamash Institute of Dental Medicine, University of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2011. In 2015, Dr. Khan graduated from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA with a Doctorate in Dental Medicine. Dr. Khan was born and raised in Dubai. He and his wife, Aiza enjoy spending time with family, outdoor activities and an occasional contest of bowling.

What is it about your business that is unique or special? What separates you from your competitors?

My wife, Nicole, and I formed Salina Guns & Hoses in 2014. In nearly four years, we have raised over $60,000 for local families who have children dealing with significant health problems. What sets Salina Guns & Hoses apart from other non-profit organizations is that Nicole and I donate all our time and efforts to put on the Annual Charity Flag Football game between local law enforcement and local firemen & EMT’s.

The past two years we have hosted a Charity Golf Tournament, the Salina Guns & Hoses 10-FORE, which has proven to be one of the best charity tournaments in the entire State of Kansas. Hundreds of local businesses put their faith in Nicole and I in 2014, and they continued to do so in the years following.

Great News from Great Lakes!

Great Lakes Airlines boarded a total of 1,517 passengers on non-stop flights to and from the Salina Regional Airport and the Denver International Airport during May 2017. The airline’s previous peak month was March 2017 when 1,465 people decided to Fly Salina. As Great Lakes nears the completion of one full year of Salina Airport operations, a total of 13,121 passengers have traveled to and from Denver on Great Lakes’ 30-seat regional aircraft.

We can also determine that:

• 68% of SLN – DEN traffic is origination & destination (O&D) travel. This means that the trip is just between Salina and Denver;

• 26% of all O&D traffic is booked via www.flygreatlakes.com;

• 32% of SLN – DEN passengers make connections at DEN to other cities.

Only 3% of the connecting traffic is on the United Airlines code share.

Connecting passengers are purchasing two separate tickets that result in lower overall fares;

• Top airlines for connecting flights on a separate ticket appear to be Southwest, Spirit and Frontier.

Preparations are underway for the 2017 Leadership Salina class! Applications are now available at http://www.salinakansas.org/leadership-salina.html. Approximately 30 applicants will be chosen for this year’s class, beginning August 24 thru November 15.

Leadership Salina equips people with the ability to make a long lasting change for the common good. It focuses on leadership as an activity, not a position. The curriculum, facilitated by Michelle Peck, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina, and Amanda Michaelis, Executive Director of the Salina Area United Way, is based on the Kansas Leadership Center’s competencies – Manage Self, Diagnose Situation, Energize Others, and Intervene Skillfully. Through large group sessions, small group work, peer consulting, and individual reflections, participants develop the ability to better harness their leadership potential to make a difference in the community. In addition, participants visit local businesses, participate in discussions with community leaders, and participate in group projects. New to the program in 2017, Leadership Salina graduates past and present will receive course credit towards Kansas Wesleyan University’s MBA program. Graduates who meet the application requirements will receive experiential credit in the equivalent of one elective course, leaving participants with just nine courses to complete the MBA. Clare Riordan is our new summer intern at Visit Salina. Clare is a senior at Benedictine College with a double Major in Business Marketing and Management with a minor in Political Science. Visit Salina has introduced her to the uniquely diverse tourism industry, with her working alongside us at sports events, and also bringing her creativity, drive and talent to the business side of our operation. Clare’s most recent project is marketing the Virtual Welcome Bag program, designed to put the best of Salina in front of visitors, often prior to their arrival.
