Friday Night Live (FNL) is a wonderful collaboration of Salina Arts & Humanities, Salina Downtown, Inc. and downtown stakeholders. FNL is an arts and entertainment series designed to increase attendance and participation in arts-related events and to strengthen partnerships with local business owners in the downtown arts district. Each week, FNL will feature music and/or poetry events in restaurants, bars, outdoor plazas and other venues. The FNL series is a combination of free-admission events sponsored by FNL and covercharge events presented by local businesses and promoted through Friday Night Live stakeholders. On the FIRST Friday of every month is #artwalkedition. There is a visual art component which includes area businesses featuring local/regional artists until 7 pm. You can find all Friday Night Live activities on our Facebook page!

Smoky Hill River Festival... best summer Road Trip!

Contributed by Kay Quinn, Salina Arts & Humanities For unforgettable summertime memories, head to the Smoky Hill River Festival. From its rockin’ stage acts to good eats to the Artyopolis kids’ camp, the River Festival is your “gotta be there” summer road-trip destination. Many businesses and individuals lend a hand to help stage one of the Midwest’s bestloved community celebrations, all at one shady roadside stop.

Roadside Eats

Take a trip down Food Row to smell the funnel cakes, roasted meats and mouthwatering pizza. More than 30 Festival food vendors offer delectable treats ranging from Texas BBQ to Asian delights. Home-cooked bierocks, gumbo and homemade ice cream are a few of the other tantalizing treats to try.

Music Byways

From live music to rovers to kids’ performers, River Festival entertainment is definitely worth the trip. Four live stages rock Oakdale Park Friday through Sunday from 11am on, after the Thursday night Festival Jam. More than 20 professional touring acts take the stage to play rock ‘n’ roll, bluegrass, alt country, the blues and more. The Bravo Stage features emerging Kansas artists performing indie rock, folk, hip-hop and spoken word.

Camp Artyopolis

A colorful, kid-sized metropolis, Artyopolis challenges children and teens to express themselves in an affirming, experimental setting. Game Street, Lego Lane, free makeand-take crafts at Creation Crossing and the ever-popular face painting and button making are all within Artyopolis city limits.

On nearby Arty’s Stage, jugglers, storytellers and balloon artists abound.

Natural Canvas

The River Festival’s Fine Art and Four Rivers Craft Show invites summer travelers to pull off the road and relax. No rushing around—just a laid-back ambiance that fosters meaningful face-toface chats about art, life and more.

The two 2017 art shows feature compelling work by 136 national artists.

Mediums include ceramics, wood, sculpture, painting, jewelry, fiber and more.

Eight Demonstration artists share and sell traditional to contemporary craft.

Surrounding the shows are more than 20 set-innature Art Installations commissioned just for the Festival. Each installation artist reflects the River Festival’s spirit in a unique way. Works range from interactive murals to entrance bridge enhancements to balloon sculpture.

Added Attractions

Other River Festival highlights include a pre-Festival workshop, the Festival Fitness Five races and walks, and the Friday-night Big Band Dance.

Can you please give us a three sentence summary of your personal background?

I am a full time nurse with Angels Care Home Health, full time mom to two boys and still hold my insurance license in the state of Kansas. Corey works full time at St. Francis Boys home for 15 years and is a father to two children and a grandfather to six beautiful grandkids.

What is it about your business that is unique or special? What separates you from your competitors?

We are currently the only escape room with a 45 mile radius. We offer team building and can hold up to 20 people in one of our rooms. You are locked in for one hour and must solve puzzles and clues to escape!

Ambassador of the Month

Dana Frederking

Dana Frederking, Assurance Partners, is the Chamber’s “Ambassador of the Month” for May. Dana is in her second year as an Ambassador. She has secured two new members this year. Chamber President/CEO Don Weiser said, “Dana has been a great addition to our Ambassador team. We appreciate her efforts!” Dana will receive a $25 Smoky Hill Silver gift certificate. Congratulations Dana!

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

The Kansas State Square Dance Association will host its 65th Annual Convention at Tony’s Pizza Events Center on June 2 and 3. Over 350 dancers representing several states will be in attendance. Special guest caller for the event is Mike Bramlett from Garland, TX and wellknown cuers Peter & Chama Gomez from Berthoud, CO, will be cueing the round dancing.

2017 American Dexter Cattle Association National Show, Sale and General Meeting will return June 15-17, to the Saline County Livestock and Expo Center. This nationally known show is drawing attendees and families to Salina from all corners of the U.S. Salina’s central location has proven to create larger than normal registration numbers. More than 150 cattle are registered with 300 human attendees expected. This year the National Herdsman Award will be given, along with many educational sessions, and a youth show and sale.

The 44th Annual Convention of the Little Big Horn Association will meet in Salina from June 14-17. This group of history buffs continues their mission to promote and exchange knowledge on the life and times of George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of Little Big Horn.

More than 100 enthusiasts will travel to Salina and meet up at Quality Inn and Suites for book signings and an educational symposium. They will also travel via bus to locations where Custer had associations, including the sites of the raids along the Solomon and Saline Rivers, the Minneapolis /Lincoln area, Fort Harker, and Fort Hays.

Salina welcomes CDFA Oklahoma/Kansas Financing Roundtable on June 8, for a special one-day conference hosted at Kansas State University Polytechnic. This event will feature a number of economic development finance experts from around the state discussing development finance tools, authorities, resources and approaches, and how these can affect the Oklahoma/Kansas economy going forward. The lunch session from Noon-1:15pm is “Financing the Applied Aviation Research Center at Kansas State”. Kansas State Polytechnic is one of the first, and still one of the few, universities in the country to offer a bachelor’s degree in unmanned aircraft systems. The UAS program is the principle initiative of the University’s Applied Aviation Research Center. This special luncheon session will feature the story of how the AARC was financed through an innovated public-private partnership between the University, the City, and their partners. Speakers include Kurt Barnhart, Associate Dean of Research, Kansas State University; Jason A. Gage, City Manager, City of Salina; and Tim Rogers, Executive Director, Salina Airport Authority.

Update: There will be a Cosplay Contest on Saturday, June 17 at 4pm. Individuals and groups need to sign up by 3pm to participate. There is no age limit and all contestants will be judged in one contest. Family friendly costumes only please!

Prizes: 1st place - $200, 2nd Place - $100 and 3rd place - $50!

Update: Artists Cullen Bunn and Jimmy Johnston will be in attendance, signing autographs. Bunn is best known for his work on comic books including X-Men and Deadpool miniseries for Marvel Comics. Jimmy Johnston is a comic book writer best known for the IDW series Micronauts.

Salina…Something to Smile About!

Several months ago, Visit Salina contracted with a marketing firm to conduct a ‘Destination Scan’ of our Salina hospitality industry. A family came to Salina and spent a long weekend, staying in two hotels, eating in several restaurants, and taking advantage of nearly every attraction in the community. We shared the results of their subsequent report with the participating businesses. Nearly all was quite positive. One negative comment in the report was a big eyeopener for us – that in general there weren’t many people smiling! Starting with our National Travel and Tourism campaign in May, we have taken on the challenge to remind our hospitality staffers that there is a LOT to smile about in Salina… beautiful public art, a wonderful zoo, excellent museums, great entertainment from concerts and theatre to golf and wine walks! So, come on Salina…SMILE!
