Congressman Marshall Town Hall Scheduled The public is invited to join U.S. Congressman Roger Marshall for a Town Hall in Salina from 7:30-8:30am on Tuesday, May 9, at the Salina Chamber of Commerce Annex, 120 W. Konza Seeds III Chooses Wellness Tote Project Numerous Salina-area charitable projects received visibility and a chance to compete for grassroots funding at the third annual Konza Seeds microfunding event on Tuesday, April 18. Organized by Konza Club Salina, the Leadership Salina alumni group, Konza Seeds III vetted applications from numerous established and newer nonprofit entities, selecting three to make mini-presentations at the ‘eat and vote’ event.

Attendees give a $10-$12 donation to attend and enjoy a simple supper as they cast a vote for their favorite project. Returning Event Sponsor was First Bank Kansas, joined by partners Pronto Print, Vidricksen Distributing and Blue Barn Door.

The three participating charities were: Restaurant Readers, Partners in Early Childhood Education; Downtown Mural Project, Leadership Class 2016 “Green Team”; and Wellness Tote Project, Tammy Walker Cancer Center/Cancer Center of Kansas. The winning project, Wellness Tote Project, provides totes to patients undergoing cancer treatment. To date, 375 totes have been provided. The project receives $450.

Salina SHRM Partners on Business Leader Conference The Central Kansas and Salina SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) Chapters will again partner to present a one-day training opportunity for HR professionals and business leaders, May 18 at the J.O. Sundstrom Conference Center in Lindsborg. SHRM is the world’s largest HR membership organization with 575 affiliate chapters across the globe.

Seventh SculptureTour Salina Exhibit to be UNwrapped!

For many, spring means new life, and that is certainly true when you look at the landscape of downtown Salina in the month of May. This year, we celebrate the seventh year of the SculptureTour Salina (STS) project. Late in the year, artists from across the U.S., and sometimes beyond, submit work to STS for consideration to be part of the exhibit. A jury considers that work, and selects around 20 pieces to arrive in Salina on loan from the artists for 11 months. All work is for sale.

The 2017 SculptureTour exhibit will feature 22 works on exhibit along Santa Fe from Ash Street to South Street. The new sculptures will be UNwrapped (unveiled) on Saturday, May 6. At precisely 11:00am, 22 teams of ‘UNwrappers’ made up of volunteers, STS sponsors and supporters will be signaled to unveil the sculptures simultaneously. Several of the artists will be on hand as well to help unveil their work and meet the public.

The festivities continue 11am-1pm, with entertainment along Santa Fe, and free popcorn and face painting near Campbell Plaza. At 1pm, Artist Awards will be announced at Campbell Plaza in five categories: 1st and 2nd Place Bronze, 1st and 2nd Place Other Media, and Best of Show. These awards are juried and will be announced by Mike Hoppock, SculptureTour Chair.

“SculptureTour Salina, and particularly the UNwrap Party, is really an experience for everyone,” stated Mike Hoppock, Chair of the SculptureTour committee. “We encourage

families with kids of all ages, art classes, Scout groups, and all generations to come downtown, pick up a ballot, enjoy the exhibit, and vote for their favorite sculpture.” Ballots are collected until December 31, when a People’s Choice sculpture is determined and purchased by the City of Salina to remain in our community. All ballots cast during the UNwrap event are eligible for prizes to be drawn the following week. ALL ballots cast through December 31 are eligible for year-end prizes!

These dollars help us administratively with the Artists Awards, shipping pieces here and marketing. Further, our goal is for the Friends dollars to purchase art as well.

VISIT SALINA

Visit Salina Celebrates 2017 National Travel and Tourism Week, May 7-13 Established by a congressional resolution in 1983, this week of events serves to champion the power of the travel and tourism industry. Travel and tourism professionals from across the nation work throughout the week to promote the impactful contributions their travel markets and organizations make to the U.S. and local economies. The travel community marks the event in a number of ways, from conducting media outreach to securing proclamations and resolutions from local governments.

This year’s theme shines a spotlight on the power of travel by recognizing the millions of people who keep this industry strong: the Faces of Travel. The industry supports the livelihoods of more than 15 million Americans. These are the people who help others connect because hospitality runs in their DNA. These are the jobs and the people we should be celebrating.

According to the 2015 Tourism Satellite Account data from Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics Company, key indicators in Saline County support the importance and growth of tourism in the county: • Visitors spending grew 6.7% in 2015, compared to the prior year.

• Visitor spending in Saline County ranks 6th among all counties in the state.

• Tourism spending directly supports 1,971 jobs, with overall visitorsupported economic activity supporting nearly 2,600 jobs – one out of every 11.6 jobs in the county.

• Tourism in Saline County generated $28.5 million in tax revenues in 2015, with $17.1 million accruing to state and local governments.

At the Monday, May 8 Salina City Commission meeting, representatives of the Salina tourism industry will read a proclamation making May 7-13 Travel and Tourism Week in Salina. Ads will appear in the Salina Journal throughout the week, and Visit Salina staff and partners will be on local talk radio to discuss the importance of tourism to the area, share data about the industry, and most importantly, feature the “Smiles of Salina Tourism”, our local take on the national theme.

“This is a great way to kick-off the summer travel season,” said Sylvia Rice, Director of Visit Salina. “Our goal is for the community to see just how integral tourism is to our economy, and to celebrate the people that make it all happen for Salina”.

Document Resources, a division of UNDERGROUND VAULTS AND STORAGE, INC., congratulates Brandon Weber for achieving the Certified Secure Destruction Specialist (CSDS) designation. Brandon is the General Manager of the Document Resources division and achieved the certification while attending the Annual NAID Conference in March. He passed the required exam with honors and is one of a few industry professionals that can claim this designation.

Brandon demonstrated a wide knowledge of the Secure Document Destruction Industry by becoming a CSDS and a commitment to our clients by continuing to improve his expertise and by staying up to date with industry changes. This accreditation is the highest individual achievement in the destruction industry.

He was previously the director of plant operations in the Ottawa School District, and began his career working for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Social Media Club: Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Introduced

Meet the MAC!

In 2004, the face of marketing and networking changed with the introduction of Facebook. Everyday social networks pop-up, evolve, and grow in popularity.

Where once, marketers needed to consider creating a website to engage customers online, now there is Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Musical.ly, Pinterest, Reddit, Vine, Flickr, Pandora, Sound Cloud, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Google+, and et cetera, each with their own set of ever changing metrics and unwritten rules. This leaves a lot of research, strategy, and learning to be done constantly.

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce would like to assist our members in getting the best information on the many tips and tricks of social media marketing through the new online Facebook group “Social Media Club: Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.” All members interested in bettering their social media and online strategies are welcome to join this free group to share and read information to and from other members.

This means, if you have a tip that helped more customers learn about your upcoming promotion, post it in the group! Did you find a great article on Search Engine Optimization? Share it with the other group members! In addition being a member to member information sharing platform, we encourage you to ask questions to the group, and seek their opinions. To join this group, search “Social Media Club: Salina Area Chamber of Commerce” in Facebook and select “Join.”

In addition to the continuous online group, the Social Media Club, in partnership with Salina Blue, will be hosting a panel where chamber members who are successful with their online marketing strategies, will share their best social media marketing tips, tricks, and success stories, followed by a Q & A session with attendees. The Salina Military Affairs Council will host a “Meet the MAC” event on May 12 from 5-7:30pm at the Salina VFW, 1108 W. Crawford Street.

MAC’s mission is to plan, coordinate and execute programs and activities that strengthen the relationship between Salina and the military members working, training, and living here. The goal is to bring a heightened awareness of one community’s importance to the other. MAC is committed to supporting soldiers, airmen, and their families during both deployment hardships and homecoming joy. The message is that Salina is not just a duty station, but a place to call home.

The event will provide an opportunity for the community to find out more about the council and its members, and to learn more about how MAC fosters a support environment in Salina. There will be door prizes, and food will be provided by Rib Crib, with a cash bar.

2nd Annual Street Eats & Beats Join the Salina Area Young Professionals (SAYP), Saturday May 27 for stellar food, rockin’ bands, and great community at the 2nd Annual Street Eats & Beats festival in Downtown Salina! In addition to the local music and EIGHT food trucks, this year the event will expand to include a live artist, bouncy houses, culinary education, free popcorn provided by My Bike KS, and other children’s events.

Trucks include Fun Foods, Umami Bowl Food Truck, Porky’z Taquitoz, Brickhouse BBQ, Li’lBit Gourmet Burgers, There’s No Taste Like Home Food Truck, LumpiaPalooza, and Noble House Hawaiian Plate Lunch. Coop’s Pizzeria will also be serving in their restaurant!

Admission into the concert is a suggested donation of $5. All other activities have no entry suggestion and are open to the entire community.
