Volunteers sweeping the sidewalks of Santa Fe

Spring Spruce Up was a HUGE success!

What does 50 community volunteers and over 45 trash bags get you? One CLEAN downtown! The annual Spring Spruce Up, hosted by The Salina Area United Way, on April 16th brought folks of all ages together with one thing in mind; to spruce up Salina. Salina Downtown’s Built Environment Committee lead the downtown volunteers in projects that included planting ten various trees in empty planter beds, sweeping the sidewalks and alleyways, as well as tidying up the trash corals. Salina Downtown has always enjoyed being a part of the yearly clean-up events. It is such a vital part in keeping our neighborhood fun and exciting for everyone! “Spring Spruce Up was really fun with all of my friends. I like helping downtown and helping others... but the trash corrals really smelled!” - Brooks Richardson, Salina Spikes baseball volunteer Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this event so successful. With the help of everyone, we will continue to champion a healthy and vibrant downtown community!

Friday Night Live…coming to a downtown near you!

Salina Arts & Humanities and Salina Downtown, Inc. have partnered to breathe live music and art into Friday nights downtown! Friday Night Live is a new program that combines several Salina Arts & Humanities programs into one big Friday Night explosion…EVERY Friday, from May through September. The first Friday of every month, we encourage you to join our local merchants as they showcase local art within their businesses. Be there as we kick off the first ever Friday Night Live event on May 6th on the Campbell Plaza stage with our special guest, Jill Cohn from Seattle, WA.

Carl Garten is a very familiar face at the Chamber. In his professional life, he is Carl Garten the District Director of the Central Kansas Extension District for Kansas State University. For many years, he has expanded his work in the agriculture industry to include a LOT of volunteer hours with the Chamber’s Ag Division. Carl has served as the Chair of that group since 2002, but has worked on projects with them far prior to that. He has been co-chair of the Kansas Jr. Dairy Show since 1978. He began working with us on the Farm Expo in the spring of 1979, after attending in 1978 as a “looker”. “I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years.

A big change was moving the show into the Bicentennial Center in 1980, moving to paved parking lots. Other changes have been technology like GPS, Unmanned Aircraft and GMO’s to name a few,” said Garten. “The reason I have stayed active with the Ag Committee so long is because they are a great bunch of individuals that are very dedicated to making the activities of the Ag Committee successful!”

SAYP Street Eats and Beats hit Downtown!

Salina Area Young Professionals’ (SAYP) first ever Street Eats and Beats festival hits the streets and stage on Campbell Plaza in Downtown Salina on May 28. This family-friendly event for the entire community will bring local musicians, alongside area food trucks for a unique dining experience, unlike anything Salina has seen before. Kicking off the evening, the trucks will begin serving at 4:30pm with the concert joining in from 6-10pm. All are welcome to snag some grub and enjoy our local, talented musicians or stroll down Santa Fe. Admission for the concert is $5.

Sixth SculptureTour Salina Exhibit to be UNwrapped!

For many, spring means new life, and that is certainly true when you look at the landscape of downtown Salina in the month of May. This year, we celebrate the sixth year of the SculptureTour Salina project which brings sculptures on loan from across the country.

The 2016 SculptureTour exhibit will feature 22 works on exhibit along Santa Fe from Ash Street to South Street, and on Iron Avenue one block east of Santa Fe. The new sculptures will be UNwrapped (unveiled) on Saturday, May 7. At precisely 11:00am a cannon shot will signal 22 unwrap teams, comprised of site sponsors, volunteers and friends of the project to unwrap the sculptures. Several of the artists will be on hand as well to help unveil their work and meet the public.

The festivities continue 11am-1pm, with entertainment on Campbell Plaza, free airbrush tattoos near Spillman Plaza, and free popcorn downtown. At 1pm, Artist Awards will be announced at Campbell Plaza in five categories: 1st and 2nd Place Bronze, 1st and 2nd Place Other Media, and Best of Show. These awards are juried and will be announced by Mike Hoppock, SculptureTour Chair and presented by Mayor Kaye Crawford.

“SculptureTour Salina, and particularly the UNwrap Party, is really an experience for everyone,” stated Mike Hoppock,

Chair of the SculptureTour committee. “We encourage families with kids of all ages, art classes, Scout groups, all generations to come down and pick up a ballot, 2015 People’s Choice enjoy the exhibit, and vote for their favorite sculpture.” Ballots are collected until December 31, when a People’s Choice sculpture is determined and purchased by the City of Salina to remain in our community. All ballots cast during the UNwrap event are eligible for prizes to be drawn the following week. ALL ballots cast through December 31 are eligible for year-end prizes!

Final Legislative Issues Meeting This Month In an effort to keep area citizens informed on state legislative activity during the 2016 state legislative session, the final of a series of Legislative Issue Meetings with our local Saline County Legislative Delegation will be held Saturday, May 21, 8:30-10am, at the Chamber’s Visit Salina Annex.

Senator Tom Arpke, and Representatives Steven Johnson, Diana Dierks, and J. R. Claeys, have been invited to attend. The format of the meetings will consist of opening remarks from the legislators, questions from the audience, and closing remarks from the legislators. The meetings are sponsored by AT&T. They are free and open to the public

KSHSAA 4A Div I State Baseball and Softball

Visit Salina is pleased to host the KSHSAA 4A Division I State Baseball and Softball Tournaments, May 26-27. A total of 16 teams will arrive in Salina for the event over Thursday and Friday. Baseball will be played at Dean Evans Stadium, while softball will be played at Bill Burke Park. Eight teams will compete at each tournament with schedules as follows.

Baseball: Thursday – 11am, 1:30, 4 and 6:30pm; Friday - Semi-finals 10am and 12:30pm, 3pm Consolation, 5:30pm Championship Softball: Thursday – Two games at 5pm; two games at 7 pm; Friday –Two semi-final games at 10am; noon Consolation; 1pm Championship.

“The KSHSAA 4A State tournaments are great for Salina,” stated Tiffany Benien, Visit Salina Sports & Events Mgr. “Salina traditionally hosts the class 4A State events not only in Baseball & Softball but also Football, Volleyball, Wrestling and Basketball. All of these events bring great athletes, coaches, and fans that stay, shop, dine and experience Salina.” Visit Salina estimates that direct visitor spending for the tournaments will be $285,000. Volunteers are needed to sell tickets, t-shirts and programs, announce, score keep, replenish water coolers, and retrieve foul balls. Pro Baseball expands in Salina

Salina welcomes the Salina Stockade, an expansion team in the Pecos League of Professional Baseball Clubs operating in Kansas, West Texas, Southern Colorado, New Mexico and Southern Arizona. The Pecos League has promoted 282 players to higher independent and affiliated teams from 2010-2015.

Pecos League players are age 25 years and younger. The Pecos League Regular Season is nestled in the middle of the summer from May 20-July 27. Under the direction of Justin Thompson, Field Manager, the Stockade will play 11 home games at Dean Evans Stadium beginning on May 21. The Salina Stockade will wear Navy and Royal Blue Jerseys and be in the Northern Division of the Pecos League with Garden City, Topeka, Great Bend and Trinidad, CO. The Stockade will be selling group ticket nights and sponsorships. The Stockade is also seeking host families for their players. As a host family, requirements include providing a player with their own room for the season with access to bathroom, laundry, and kitchen, as well as providing a safe environment. Hosts are encouraged to attend games and cheer on their players during games.

Kansas Health Care Association has selected Salina as its host city for their Spring Conference May 3-5. The Holiday Inn will host over 150 delegates for this event. An offsite evening event is planned in Downtown Salina.

National Association of Postmasters of the United States (NAPUS) will convene at the Holiday Inn beginning April 29 for three days. Expected attendance is 75 people.

Jo Ann McClure, Visit Salina Convention Manager represented Salina’s meeting venues, hotels and service providers at the Christian Meetings and Conventions Association Marketplace in Colorado Springs in late March. While there, Jo Ann visited with 21 meeting planners interested in Kansas meeting venues. She is following up with information now.

The Board of Trustees of SALINA AREA TECHNICAL COLLEGE (Salina Tech), 2562 Centennial Rd., is proud to announce that Gregory Nichols has been selected to serve as president of Salina Tech.

Nichols will assume his new responsibilities on July 1st. Nichols comes to Salina Tech with an excellent history of leadership in higher education, most recently as the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Colby Community College. Nichols also serves as Chair of the Deans Council for eduKan – a consortium of six community colleges in western Kansas. Salina welcomes the Nichols family!

Ambassador of the Month Valerie Andrews, Advisor Assistant at Ebert-Stein Group of Waddell & Reed, has been named “Ambassador Valerie Andrews of the Month” for April. Can you please give us a short summary of your personal background?

We both started cheering in college and fell in love with the sport. We began coaching and saw an opportunity to bring the gift of cheerleading to the Salina community.

What is it about your business that is unique or special? What seperates you from your competitors?

We are the only competitive cheer program in the area. Our athletes train and compete year round. 100% of our graduating seniors are on a collegiate cheer team. At Fierce we believe in developing the mind as much as the body. Our belief is that cheer is the medium and not the message. We get tons of girls that walk in and are shy and barely talk and within 2-3 weeks they have developed the confidence to speak up and be heard. They run around and act as though they have known us for years. One day their skills will diminish but the confidence and self-esteem they have developed will be there for life.

The completion of Iron Street improvements east of downtown was celebrated with a Chamber ribbon cutting. Salina City Commissioners, City Staff, Chamber representatives and neighborhood businesses came together to cut the ribbon.
