Mid America Farm Expo Ag Staple for the Region Ag related companies from around the United States will exhibit their products and services during the 53rd annual Mid America Farm Expo March 27-29. More than 300 exhibits will be on display showing the latest in farm technology, machinery, equipment and supplies. The event is headquartered at Tony’s Pizza Events Center and Saline County Livestock and Expo Center.

The event began as the Salina Materials Handling Show, with about 40 exhibits on display at what was then the Saline County Fairgrounds - now the Saline CO Livestock & Expo Center. The show grew over the years into the expansive event that now fills not only those buildings, but also the Tony’s Pizza Events Center. Attracting between 8,000-10,000 people over three days, the Expo is now one of the largest spring farms shows in the Midwest.

The Expo is headquartered in TPEC, with additional displays in Agricultural Hall and Exhibition Barn at the Saline County Livestock & Expo Center. In addition, outside exhibits are located in front of Ag Hall and on the TPEC west parking lot.

The People Choose… “Picasso’s Violin”!

Penny Bettles, SDI Managing Director and member of the SculptureTour Salina Committee, announced at a recent media event that the winning sculpture in the 2017 People’s Choice Award program is “Picasso’s Violin” by Colorado artist Jodie Bliss. The City of Salina will purchase the sculpture from the artist for $14,000, and will place it on a publicly accessible site for everyone to enjoy. The location that has been tentatively identified, and will be suggested to the City Commission, is on an existing base near the corner of S. Santa Fe and South Street on the property of the Salina Innovation Foundation.

“Picasso’s Violin” was one of 21 sculptures eligible for the award. Voting is open from the May unveiling until the end of the calendar year, and open to everyone. “We encourage everyone to vote for their favorite every year,” stated Sylvia Rice, Visit Salina Director at the Chamber, and part of the STS Committee. “From pre-schoolers to grandparents, and both citizens and visitors, EVERYONE can vote, and every vote counts.”

The date has been set for STS’s annual UNwrap Party, when the 2018 exhibition will be unveiled. Mark your calendar NOW for Saturday, May 5 and plan to be DOWNTOWN for the fun. Would you like to be part of the unveiling festivities?

Measuring Visitor Impact Wichita State University has conducted a study to determine what the appropriate multiplier for tourism spending is for the Salina area. That immediate multiplier rate was determined to be 1.6, meaning that for every $1.00 spent directly by a tourist/visitor for lodging, meals, entertainment, retail, and so on, our economy is actually impacted $1.60. We believe this to still be a conservative estimate, and we are now using this in calculating our estimated visitor spending. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, 650 E. Crawford invites the community to celebrate their construction project with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, March 12 at 5:00pm.

Guests will hear students in Free Spirit perform the school’s Alma Mater and band students perform their fight song. Culinary arts, broadcast and robotics students will demonstrate their skills, the new media center will be open and the Central Perk will be serving free coffee. The community is invited to see new learning spaces plus more at Central High School thanks to the 2014 Bond.

Controlled entryways, new storm shelter/auxiliary gym and locker rooms, remodeled classrooms, CTE, fine arts and performing arts areas are improved and updated. Student-led tours will be available, and guests are welcome to explore on their own.

ANDREW MANLEY is the new assistant administrator and finance director of Saline County. He holds an MBA in finance from Fort Hays State University. In this newly created position, he plans on applying a commonsense, data-driven approach when developing a budget for Saline County. A long time Salina resident, Andrew looks forward to working with county commissioners and improving the county expenditure processes.

KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY POLYTECHNIC has received a $25,000 grant from American Airlines, to help more secondary students learn what it’s like to be an airplane pilot. The grant, designed to increase enrollment in Kansas State Poly’s professional pilot degree program, will fund construction of a mobile aircraft simulator lab, support short introductory flights for prospective pilot students and sponsor middle and high school student scholarships to the campus’s aviation youth Discover Programs. The mobile lab will be taken to schools, county fairs and community events to give youth and prospective students a hands-on introduction to the pilot profession. The grant also means more secondary students will be able to participate in the Fly K-State Academy and Aviation Fixation programs on the Kansas State Polytechnic Campus. VORTEX ASIA-PACIFIC announces the relocation of their office in Pudong Shanghai, China. The company moved into a newly renovated industrial building to house its primary office and distribution center. The new office space spans more than 100 square meters and includes a large conference room, a demonstration room to showcase Vortex products, and plenty of storage. This year, Vortex Asia-Pacific will celebrate its ninth year of serving the dry bulk industry. Vortex Asia-Pacific’s parent company, Salina Vortex Corporation, was founded 40 years ago in Salina. The Asia-Pacific office is responsible for the corporation’s many business activities occurring throughout China, as well as the management of Vortex’s five representative agents in the Chinese marketplace.

SALINA PUBLIC LIBRARY, 301 W. Elm was awarded a Kansas Humanities Council project grant “Kansas Stories of the Vietnam War.” The library hosted a Memoir Writing Workshop for Veterans on February 27. Their second major event will be a Community Conversation on March 26 at 7pm in the Library’s Prescott Room. Three conversation panelists will be veterans Loren Houltberg and Jim Deister, as well as Dr. Anita Specht, Associate Professor of History at Kansas Wesleyan University, to open the conversation.

KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY POLYTECHNIC is working with law enforcement partners to offer a training course targeted at how first responders can utilize unmanned aircraft systems in daily operations and safety procedures. The first course offering runs April 9-12 at the campus in Salina. The UAS Law Enforcement Training course was developed based on feedback the campus received from attendees of its Small UAS Commercial Pilot Training course, 43% of whom are first responders. Using Kansas State Polytechnic’s industry-leading technology, pilots will receive hands-on flight training in areas such as flight maneuvers, crew resource management, accident scene reconstruction, search and rescue operations, and night operations. Attendees will also learn best practices for UAS operations, FAA regulatory guidance, and software tools.

What is it about your business that is unique or special? What separates you from your competitors?

I always loved boutique shopping, but didn’t really fit in the Small-Medium-Large model. I specialize in fun, trendy women’s clothing in sizes XL – 3XL, but I carry some smaller and some larger and a few men’s styles. Most larger women are concerned about some part of their body, whether it be arms, tummy, bottom or legs. I love helping women find clothing that feels great and makes them look even better!

The Chamber Legislative Issues Meetings, sponsored by AT&T, are scheduled for Saturday, March 17 and Saturday, April 21. They will be held from 8:30-10am at the Chamber’s Visit Salina Annex, 120 W. Ash. Senator Randall Hardy, and Representatives Steven Johnson, Diana Dierks, and J. R. Claeys, have been invited to attend. The format of the meetings will consist of opening remarks from the legislators, written questions from the audience, and closing remarks from the legislators. Entrepreneurial Youth Accept the Challenge!

The Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship, dba NetWork Kansas, was established in 2004 as part of the Kansas Economic Growth act. In 2007 they started the Entrepreneurship (E)-Community program with 6 E-Communities; since then they have grown to 61.

Part of being an E-Community is access to a locally controlled loan fund. However, NetWork Kansas wants to go deeper than the money, and has offered different programs and initiatives where the E-Communities can access those funds to host or implement said programs. One program they have is Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC). They feel that encouraging entrepreneurship at a young age is vital to the sustainability of smaller communities. We should all want kids to see problems as opportunities and think of ways to solve them...then think through their ideas with a written plan and presentation. The hope is that the YEC events are also fun for the students because it’s exciting to see the ideas they come up with. Not to mention, we are always impressed with their level of preparedness!

Salina will soon host our fourth YEC event, March 7, at Kansas Wesleyan University. The YEC teams – from Salina South and Salina Central – will compete in three areas. Local business professionals will serve as judges for those events, which include: • Executive Summary: Prior to the actual event, teams of judges review the executive summary of each business concept which has been prepared by the student entrepreneurs, and score those in several pre-determined areas; • “Elevator Speech”: The student teams create a display in a trade show format, and are scored by another team of judges as they look at those displays and have a short pitch from the competitors; • Formal Pitch: Entrepreneur teams present a more formal three minute pitch for their business, as if they are addressing potential capital investors (judges).

There is a cash prize for the winning YEC team, along with a trip to the state competition. The Chamber would like to thank the generous volunteers who have stepped forward from the business community to serve as judges prior to and during this event, and the preceding YEC events.
