This year’s inductees represent two very important industry segments in Salina – the retail sector and manufacturing. Our inductee in the Historic Category, Milton Stiefel, was the owner of Stiefel Department Store.

‘Stiefel’s’- as everyone referred to the store – was a cornerstone of commerce for Salina, located in the heart of the downtown. We talk often about the regional commerce Salina enjoys with consumers coming from across northcentral and northwest Kansas. That regional pull was evident even in Mr. Stiefel’s day, as the store served as a shopping destination.

Our inductees in the Contemporary category are Mel and Marge Bergkamp, founders of Bergkamp, Inc. This is the first year in the program’s history that a husband and wife have been inducted. This family owned/operated business has a long history in Salina. Bergkamp has provided quality pavement preservation and maintenance equipment to customers worldwide, for more than 40 years.

Congratulations to our 2018 Business Hall of Fame Inductees. We honor your commitment to Salina. We hope everyone plans to attend the induction ceremony on October 31st to help us honor these business leaders. See the story inside for details.

Leadership Salina 2018 Well Under Way The 2018 class of Leadership Salina is well into their fall schedule for this term. Thus far, the class has met at Webster Conference Center, Salina Regional Health Center and Kansas Wesleyan University. The group will continue learning about the community and being a leader as their curriculum continues at Rolling Hills Zoo, Tony’s Pizza Events Center, and Kansas Highway Patrol Training Center. The class will also travel to the Kansas Leadership Center in Wichita. The facilitator this year is Amanda Michaelis.

Salina Ranks Well in Cost of Living The Cost of Living Index measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services, excluding taxes and non-consumer expenditures, for professional and managerial households in the top income quintile. It is based on more than 90,000 prices, covering 60 different items for which prices are collected quarterly by chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, and university applied economic centers in each participating urban area.

The composite index is based on six component categories – housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services.

Among the 259 urban areas that participated in the second quarter 2018 Cost of Living Index, a professional/managerial standard of living ranged from more than twice the national average – 238.3 in New York, NY – to 25% below the national average – 75.7 in Harlinger, TX. The composite index for Salina was 84, placing us with the lowest cost of living among the seven reporting ‘urban areas’ in our region: Trivia: On a national comparison, Salina ranked 4th least expensive in the category of Drop-In Hour Yoga Class.

2018 Business Hall of Fame Inductees Announced Three prominent Salina business persons have been selected to be inducted into the 2018 class of the Salina Business Hall of Fame. They are: Milton Stiefel, former owner of Stiefel Department Store (Historic Category, 1926-1975); and Milton Stiefel Mel and Marge Bergkamp, founders of Bergkamp, Inc. (Contemporary Category 1976-present).

The induction ceremony will be held Mel & Marge Wednesday, October 31, noon-1:30pm, at Bergkamp the Salina Country Club.

Kansas Lieutenant Governor Tracey Mann, will be the featured speaker.

The Salina Business Hall of Fame was established by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Its purpose is to recognize and honor Salina business leaders, Lt. Gov. Tracey Mann both past and present, who have made extraordinary contributions to Salina, earned the respect of the local community and called attention to the Free Enterprise system and its value to our country and citizens in shaping Salina’s way of life.

Each inductee will be recognized with a commemorative plaque. In addition, plaques honoring each inductee will be displayed at the Chamber office, 120 W. Ash. A biography of each inductee will be printed and distributed at the luncheon.

“The Salina Business Hall of Fame offers a great opportunity to honor and recognize business people who have had a

tremendous, lasting impact on the Salina community,” stated Don Weiser, Chamber President and CEO. “It’s our way of saying thank you and recognizing the men and women and their accomplishments who have helped make Salina the great community it is today.”

Candidates Forum to Inform Voters The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters will sponsor a Candidates Forum for State Legislative Candidates, on Thursday, October 25, 6:30-7:30pm, in the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Visit Salina Annex, 120 W. Ash. One session will be held. It will feature local candidates for the State Legislature from the 69th District, J.R. Claeys and Gerrett Morris.

The forum will be moderated by Mark Ritter, Chairman of the Board of the Chamber, and Ann Zimmerman of the League of Women Voters. The format of the forum will consist of one minute opening remarks by each candidate, questions from a media panel, written questions from the audience, and one minute closing remarks by each candidate. Candidates will have one minute to answer questions.

Candidate Profiles of the candidates for the 69th District, as well as un-opposed candidates for the state legislature from Saline County and Saline County Commission candidates, will be available October 8 at the Saline County Clerk’s office – 300 W. Ash, the Chamber office - 120 W. Ash, and on the Chamber website at www.salinakansas.org and League of Women Voters website at www. lwvsalina.org. They will also be available at the forum. MarqueeWelcomes The Kansas Authors Club is bringing their State Writing Conference and Convention to Salina, October 5-7 at the Quality Inn & Suites. The event will feature State writing Conference & Convention Kansas Poet Laureate Kevin Rabas as the Keynote Speaker. Other components include workshops on fiction writing, journaling for writers, historical nonfiction, memoirs, Personal essays, poetry, biography and writing for middle graders and young adults Other special events are a Panel Discussion on songwriting—a collaboration of musicians and poets, read-arounds and much more!

Good Sports

Visit Salina is pleased to announce that KSHSAA has selected the Salina Municipal Golf Course to host the KSHSAA State Girls Golf Tournaments each October for the years 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. The 2018 event will take place on October 15 featuring class 6A. The tournament will feature between 88-102 golfers from around the state. Each year will feature a different class with 3-1A in 2019; 5A in 2020; and 4A in 2021. While Salina has hosted the Girls State Tournament in the previous years, the commitment is traditionally for only one year. To confirm a 4-year agreement from KSHSAA validates the excellent service and coordination efforts by the community and the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Measuring Visitor Impact Wichita State University has conducted a study to determine what the appropriate multiplier for tourism spending is for the Salina area. That immediate multiplier rate was determined to be 1.6, meaning that for every $1.00 spent directly by a tourist/visitor for lodging, meals, entertainment, retail, and so on, our economy is actually impacted $1.60. We believe this to still be a conservative estimate, and we are now using this in calculating our estimated visitor spending. Ambassador of the Month Steve Murrison has been named September Steve Murrison Ambassador of the Month. • Since 1968 and the opening on Elm Street with the midcentury modern design the building has since been remodeled. These improvements have been in the basement which currently has Youth Services & The Prescott Room, the Information Services on the 1st Floor, a 7,000 square-foot expansion to house the Technology Center and interior updates to include new contemporary furniture.
