Meet your new Chamber Board Member

Your Chamber Board of Directors recently appointed Jennifer Brantley, Sr. Human Resource Manager for Tony’s Pizza, to fulfill the unexpired term of Scott Eck who has left Salina. Jennifer joined the Salina Schwan’s family in April 2017, and has over 25 years of business experience in a variety of operation and HR leadership roles. Jennifer has served as senior human resource manager supporting Schwan’s manufacturing facilities in Atlanta, GA, Pottstown, PA, Hollywood, FL and Stilwell, OK, and the Jennifer Brantley Suwanee, GA distribution center before joining the Salina team.

Jennifer received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Arkansas and has been with Schwan’s the past 14 years. Jennifer has been a strong asset to the organization, having worked in several disciplines including supply chain, sales forecasting, and production planning. Her dedication and service to the organization was recognized last year as a recipient of the Marvin Schwan Excellence Award, Schwan’s company’s highest honor, featured in the Schwan People magazine, Spring 2016 edition.

Jennifer’s passion is to give back to our local companies, neighbors and community by volunteering her time, knowledge and leadership expertise.

Three to be Inducted to Salina Business Hall of Fame

The Salina Country Club is the location for the 2017 Salina Business Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The event will honor three prominent Salina business persons, who have been selected as the 2017 inductees. They are: Arthur M. Claflin, Businessman, Banker, Philanthropist in the Pioneer Category, 1858-1925; Dan Bolen, Businessman and Real Estate Developer in the Historic Category, 1926-1975; and Timothy F. Rogers, A.A.E., Executive Director, Salina Airport Authority in the Contemporary Category 1976-present.

The event will be Monday, October 30, noon-1:30pm at the Salina Country Club.

General Richard Myers, President of Kansas State University, will be the featured speaker.

The Salina Business Hall of Fame was established by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Its purpose is Gen. Richard Myers to recognize and honor Salina business leaders, both past and present, who have made extraordinary

contributions to Salina, earned the respect of the local community and called attention to the Free Enterprise system and its value to our country and citizens in shaping Salina’s way of life.

Each inductee will be recognized with a commemorative plaque. In addition, plaques honoring each inductee will be displayed at the Chamber office, 120 W. Ash. A biography of each inductee will be printed and distributed at the luncheon.

Blues Masters at the Crossroads – 20 Years of the Greats!

Prepare for Kansas’ premier two-night blues music festival — Blues Masters at the Crossroads, Oct. 27-28 at Blue Heaven Studios and the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts. This year marks the 20th anniversary for the event, which throughout its history has booked the genre’s biggest stars — Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, Henry Gray, Wild Child Butler and Lazy Lester, to name but a few.

“You get to meet the artists up close and personal,” says Chad Kassem, owner of Blue Heaven Studios, a former church turned recording studio and concert hall. Friday night’s show at the church seats 450; Saturday’s show at the theatre seats up to 1,200. Visit blueheavenstudios.com or stiefeltheatre.org for 2017 lineup and ticket information. An after-concert nightly jam session is at Martinelli’s Little Italy restaurant, across the street from the theatre.

Visit the Acoustic Sounds campus from 10am to 2pm on Saturday to watch LPs pressed at Quality Record Pressings. And shop 30,000 square feet of warehouse space devoted to records and audio gear.

Fall Championship Events are Salina Tradition

Visit Salina is preparing for the arrival of two KSHSAA State Championship events. The KSHSAA 4A DI and DII State Volleyball Tournaments will be held at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center, October 27-28, 2017. This event will bring 16 teams, plus officials, fans and spectators for quality competition in the two tournaments. The volleyball tournaments are estimated to provide more than $220,910 in direct visitor spending over the two-day event. Ticket prices are $9 for Adults and $7 for Students K-12. Tickets can be purchased on-line after October 10 at www.TonysPizzaEventsCenter.com or at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center box office throughout the event.

Visit Salina is also pleased to host the KSHSAA 4A Division II State Football Championship. The event will be played the Saturday following Thanksgiving Day November 25 at Salina Stadium with a 1pm kick-off. Estimated Visitor Spending for the event is $197,874.

“These are great events for Salina to host!” expressed Tiffany Benien, Visit Salina Sports & Events Manager. Both events require many community volunteers. At volleyball, Visit Salina is looking for team hosts and announcers, while at football, volunteer tasks include team hosts, officials’ hosts, pass gate workers, ticket sellers, ticket takers, and program and t-shirt sellers. ROLLING HILLS ZOO’S Pumpkin PaZOOla, October 14, is one of their most highly anticipated events of the season. Kids 12 and under will receive half-price admission along with a trip to the pumpkin patch to choose their pumpkin. The festivities include Fall-themed games and activities, face painting, Keeper Encounters, food trucks, and a special story time at the new Curiosity Tree. Kids wearing their Halloween costume will receive a special gift.

The SMOKY HILL MUSEUM, 211 W. Iron, is celebrating daily attendance that is nearly double what is was before the March opening of The Curiosity Shop children’s interactive area. Admission to the museum is FREE, though donations are appreciated. See www.smokyhillmuseum.org for hours of operation and exhibit descriptions.

SALINA ARTS & HUMANITIES is supporting SPARK Artist Resource Exchange, as it gets fully rolling. Project coordinator Lori Brack will move into the downtown office space later this Fall and already has begun work on initial goals and project outlines, with 18 partnering organizations. The three-year, grant-funded initiative encompasses three primary areas: professional development for area artists, integration of art into downtown and the community, and arts and healing.

RYAN MORTUARY is proud to announce that Bridgette Tinsley has been appointed as the first female licensee board member to the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts. The appointment

Candidates Forum to Inform Voters about Candidates

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters will sponsor a Candidates Forum for Salina City Commission and USD 305 School Board Candidates on Tuesday, October 17, 6-9pm, at Sams Chapel in the Hall of Pioneers on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University.

The evening’s forum will consist of two sessions. The first session will run from 6-7:25pm and will feature candidates for USD 305 School Board. The second session will run from 7:30-9pm and will feature candidates for Salina City Commission.

The forum will be moderated by Guy Walker, Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors, and Ann Zimmerman and Margaret Wyatt of the League of Women Voters.

The format of the forum will consist of:

• One-minute opening remarks by each candidate; • Questions from a media panel and written questions from the audience; • One minute for each candidate to answer each question; and, • One-minute closing remarks by each candidate.

Candidate Profiles on all of the candidates are available at the Saline County Clerk’s office, the Chamber office, 120 W. Ash, and on the Chamber and League websites at www.salinakansas.org and www.lwvsalina.org. They will also be available at the forum.

The forum is free and open to the public.

Volunteer Opportunity!

Judges needed for Leadership Development Conference Approximately 230 Jobs for America’s Graduates-Kansas (JAG-K) high school students will attend the two-day conference to compete in four events and/or run for a State Career Association leadership role. The competitive events will take place on October 11, from 12:30 -5:00 pm. Judges are needed for the events listed, and a short orientation session will be provided before the competitions begin: Public Speaking (4-6 judges); Employability Skills (8-10 judges); Math Skills; Project Based Learning (4 judges).

Top students will qualify to compete in the National Student Leadership Academy in Washington DC. In addition to the competitions and elections of officers, the purpose of the conference is to enhance leadership development and personal growth of our JAG-K students.

Brightbill joins Chamber Crew LaCrista Brightbill has joined the Chamber staff as the Membership and Community Relations Director.

Her responsibilities LaCrista Brightbill will include the Leadership and Junior Leadership Salina programs, membership programs such as Ambassadors, Business After Hours, 12 @ Twelve, and events like Salina Business Hall of Fame, membership seminars, and the Annual Meeting. She will also serve as the Chamber staff rep for the Salina Area Young Professionals (SAYP) group. LaCrista was born and raised in Salina, graduating from Southeast of Saline High School, and then Kansas State University Salina where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Family Studies and Human Services. Prior to the Chamber, she worked at Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Emergency Aid Food Bank. LaCrista enjoys traveling, spending time with her two dogs, and being in the company of family and friends. Welcome aboard LaCrista!

3rd Annual Veterans Appreciation Day Planned Salina Military Affairs Council is working with other local organizations to host the 3rd Annual Veterans Appreciation Day, Saturday October 7 at the Masonic Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe. The event begins with a parade on Santa Fe (line up at 2pm). Everyone will meet at the Temple at 4pm, with dinner at 5pm, a USO Show and Auction. A dance to 60’s and 70’s era music is from 8-10pm.

Veterans and civilians are welcome to join in the celebration! Tickets for the event are on sale at the Masonic Temple, Kempton Family Wellness Center and Auld Lang Syne.

Dinner and dance prices for civilians are $30 per couple/$20 per single; for veterans are $15 per couple/$10 per single. Tickets for the dance only are $5. Come join in the fun!
