Salina Downtown, Inc./Business Improvement District #1Board of Directors is an all-volunteer organization that consists of thirteen downtown enthusiasts, business owners and downtown property owners. In September of 2016, Mayor Crawford appointed new member Paul Roberts, Assurance Partners to the Salina Downtown, Inc./ Business Improvement District #1 Board of Directors. During the same appointment, Larry Bunker, Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat; and Monte Shadwick were also re-appointed to run another term.

Connecting Salina’s young talent to volunteering is the focus of the Salina Area Young Professional’s (SAYP) Board Training on November 2 at 5:30pm in the Visit Salina Annex. The evening kicks off with attorney John Mize of Clark, Mize & Linville, Chtd. giving a presentation about the duties of serving on a board. Shortly after, all attendees are invited to network with the non-profits in attendance. In the past, non-profits have used this time to recruit new board members, committee members, and volunteers. App-ropriate Marketing Tool!

Since September 1, the brand-new Salina Chamber App has put the spotlight on Chamber member businesses. Through directories in categories such as Stay, Shop, Dine, Transportation, and Things To Do, all member businesses have their address, contact information, and social media links (if applicable) available by category in the App’s directory. In addition to the connection to local businesses, users have the ability to access the most recent Visit Salina Guide, find local news outlets, discounts to local businesses, the Salina Bicentennial Center calendar, and an up-to-date Chamber event calendar. Coming soon…a comprehensive Community Calendar!

The app serves as a one-stop-shop for Salina’s many visitors, especially those in town for an event, conference, or convention. The app will allow meeting planners to access a custom, secure conference function to present their attendees, with information about local attractions, speaker bios, event schedule, venue maps, and more! OCCK to host 26th Annual Employment Expo at Central Mall The 26th Annual Employment Expo is scheduled for Thursday, October 6th from Noon-6pm at Salina’s Central Mall. The event is jointly sponsored by a partnership between The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, Central Mall, Rocking M Radio, Eagle Communications, Salina Human Resource Management Association (SHRMA), Salina Regional Health Center, Project Search, KansasWorks, and Workforce Solutions of OCCK, Inc. This year’s event will feature regional employers looking to hire employees to fill their open positions. Area employers have the opportunity to set up a booth to talk about hiring needs both now and in the future at their business. They are encouraged to bring applications and conduct on-site interviews. Job applicants are expected to come from all over the area. Rocking M Radio will have a live remote on site and employers will have the opportunity to voice their hiring needs live during the event.

Prospective employees are encouraged to attend to learn more about the hiring needs of business, brush up on their job search skills, and network with others. KansasWorks will also have their mobile unit available for this event.

Three prominent Salina business persons have been selected to be inducted into the 2016 class of the Salina Business Hall of Fame. They are: Henry H. Sudendorf, businessman and one of the founders of Wesleyan University in Salina (Pioneer Category, 1858-1925); Robert J. Laubengayer, prominent Kansas newspaper publisher, entrepreneur, businessman, former publisher and owner of The Salina Journal, and founder of KSAL Radio (Historic Category, 1926-1975); and Sidney Reitz, Partner in the law firm of Hampton & Royce, LC (Contemporary Category 1976-present).

The induction ceremony will be held Wednesday, November 2, noon-1:30pm, at the Salina Country Club.

Robert D. Simari, M.D., Executive Dean, University of Kansas School of Medicine, will be the featured speaker.

The Salina Business Hall of Fame was established by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Its purpose is to recognize and honor Salina business leaders, both past and present, who have made extraordinary contributions to Salina, earned the respect of the local community and called attention to the Free Enterprise system and its value to our country and citizens in shaping Salina’s way of life.

Each inductee will be recognized with a commemorative plaque. In addition, plaques honoring each inductee will be displayed at the Chamber office, 120 W. Ash. A biography of each inductee will be printed and distributed at the luncheon.

The KSHSAA 4A DI and DII State Volleyball Tournaments will be held at the Bicentennial Center, October 28-29.

This event will bring 16 teams, plus officials, fans and spectators to the Salina Bicentennial Center for quality competition. The tournaments are estimated to provide more than $218,000 in direct visitor spending over the 2-day event.

On Friday morning, 8 teams in the 4A DII class will begin with opening ceremonies followed by pool play. Game times are scheduled for 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 11:30am, 12:30 and 1:30pm. Friday afternoon, 8 teams in the 4A DI class will begin with opening ceremonies followed by pool play. Game times are scheduled for 3:30, 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30pm. Semifinal, Consolation and Championship games will be played on Saturday in both divisions with 4A DII game times scheduled at 10am and 11:30am, and 4A DI games times set for 2pm and 3:30pm.

Ticket prices are $9 for Adults and $7 for Students K-12. Tickets can be purchased on-line after October 10 at www.BicentennialCenter.com or at the Salina Bicentennial Center box office throughout the event.

The Kansas Association of Nutrition and Food Service Professionals will have their annual conference in Salina at the Saline County Expo Center October 19-21. Over 150 people are expected to attend programming that includes FDA Food Codes, food safety and active shooter training. The convention delegates will be bringing items to donate to a local Salina charity and enjoy activities hosted by Visit Salina during free time.

In The News The Salina Kennel Club (SKC) will be hosting “FUR & FUN DAY IN THE PARK,” on Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 10am to 2pm in Oakdale Park. The event will provide members of the Salina community with music, food, and activities for pets and pet parents. We are encouraging participation from all area veterinarians, businesses that deal with pet products, groomers, care facilities, crafters of pet accessories and all pet lovers in general.

An ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) is an employeeowner program that provides a company’s workforce with an ownership interest in the company. SALINA REGIONAL HEALTH CENTER welcomes Kraig Bertram II, D.O. to Salina Pediatric Care. Dr. Bertram earned his medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in KC, MO, and completed his residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Welcome Dr. Bertram!

The professional education and outreach department on KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY’S POLYTECHNIC CAMPUS is officially home. The OUTREACH CENTER, a new facility dedicated to the department’s community and professional development services, opened its doors Sept.

8 following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the north corridor of the Polytechnic Campus. For years, professional education and outreach has been offering a multitude of diverse training programs, professional development resources, K-12 collaborations and civic engagement opportunities. The Outreach Center is in the north corridor of the campus, which is an area Kansas State Polytechnic plans on redeveloping, starting with the addition of K-State Research and Extension. Details about building renovations and a timeline are forthcoming. Can you please give us a three sentence summary of your personal background?

Flipping Fabulous is a three person team, made up of Karie Bogart, Lisa Holmes and Misty Affholder. We are all three longtime residents of Salina, have chosen to raise our families here, and now have a flourishing business in downtown Salina.

What is it about your business that is unique or special? What separates you from your competitors?

Because there are three of us, we can appeal to a very wide audience, which perhaps separates us a bit from similar businesses. We are also very supportive of like-minded stores, which cultivate a positive market for our industry. We also offer custom work.

In general, how is demand for your product or service?

We have been extremely busy; Lisa & Karie consistently have a wait list for custom work and we have seen a steady increase in consistent traffic and sales since we moved on up to the north side of Santa Fe, as well as joining the Chamber!

What are some of the plans you have for the future of your business?

Re-opening of Laura’s Antiques, 109 S. Santa Fe

We held our first workshop September 14 using Saltwash, and it was fantastic - you can see our workshop photos on Facebook, and stay tuned for the next workshop. We hope our business continues to bloom, expanding to creative vendors, workshops, and festivals. We are very blessed and grateful that the community & surrounding areas have embraced our creativity!

Let’s Get Social!

This year, a reported 78% of Americans have/had a social media profile on at least one platform. The steady increase of consumers flocking to Google to find information on businesses and social media to interact with local business has caused companies to increase their marketing strategy to include online promotions and advertising. Are you one of them?

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a three part series to assist members in learning about and creating an online marketing strategy. Each session will be held in the Visit Salina Annex from 9-11am. Kicking off the series on October 26 is “Gaining Customers Through Social Media”, a session on utilizing social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and et cetera, to reach potential customers with a consistent, brandaccurate message. The following sessions are “Free Marketing/Design Tools you Should be Using”- November 16 and “Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Analytics” - December 14.
