Delta Bryant joined the Chamber staff in September of 2000. Delta is often the Delta Bryant first person met or first voice heard on the telephone when you contact the Chamber office. She serves as one of the Chamber’s support staff with mailings, research, event coordination and communication with committees, the Board of Directors and our clientele. In addition to this role, Delta has the primary responsibility for several Chamber projects, including the All-America Team, the School to Career program and the Wage and Benefit Study. She recruits and coordinates the exhibitors for our annual Mid America Farm Expo and is instrumental in making that event a success for us every year. Before moving to Salina, Delta was a floral designer in Colorado. Some of her favorite hobbies include reading and watching classic movies. Thanks for all you do for the Chamber Delta!

Veterans Appreciation Day Planned

The Masonic Foundation is sponsoring a Veterans Appreciation Day, October 10, to give Salina a chance to thank all veterans for their service. A full day is planned with: -

A parade down Santa Fe (11am) with all veterans encouraged to participate.

They also invite Scout groups, marching bands and other non-commercial, non-political organizations to participate.

Pop and Hotdog Feed (12–1pm) Masonic Center parking lot. Sponsorships are needed, and there are several levels of support.

Auction (1–4pm) Masonic Center; All proceeds to benefit local veterans’ organizations. Donated items are needed for the auction!

MarqueeWelcomes At press time, Jo Ann McClure was preparing to leave for MarketPlace, hosted by Small Market Meetings in Little Rock, Ark., to promote Salina meeting venues and attractions to meeting planners. This is her first Small Market Meetings event, which was incorporated into the Visit Salina marketing plan for 2015/2016. Jo Ann requested one-on-one time with meetings planners, and networked with over 150 attendees. She also coordinated a Meet Kansas coalition presence to ensure that KANSAS made a big impression on the planners while they were in the Midwest.

Salina scores a goal with new Soccer event!

New this fall, the Salina Soccer Club has partnered with Challenger Sports to host the Mid-Kansas Cup (MK Cup), October 16-18, at Salina Soccer Complex. The event is open to all levels of teams, Boys U8toU15 & Girls U8 to U15, with Gold, Silver and Bronze Divisions available. “We have more than 50 teams participating, with 35 traveling from out of town. Each team will have around 50 players, family and coaches, so it should be a busy weekend,” stated Josh Flett, Tournament Director. Bump-Set-SPIKE…Great Digs in Salina!

The KSHSAA 4A DI and DII State Volleyball Tournaments will be held at the Bicentennial Center, October 30-31, 2015.

The event will bring 16 teams plus officials, fans and spectators to the Salina Bicentennial Center for quality competition. The tournaments are estimated to provide more than $221,000 in visitor spending over the weekend.

On Friday morning, 8 teams in the 4A DI class begin with opening ceremonies followed by pool play. Game times are scheduled for 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 11:30am, 12:30 and 1:30pm. Friday afternoon, 8 teams in the 4A DII class begin with opening ceremonies followed by pool play. Game times are scheduled for 3:30, 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30pm. Semifinal, Consolation and Championship games will be played on Saturday in both divisions with 4A DI game times scheduled at 10am and 11:30am, and 4A DII games times set for 2pm and 3:30pm.

ROLLING HILLS ZOO, 625 N. Hedville Rd, was awarded accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in September.

Unlike other accrediting bodies, AZA requires each member to undergo this rigorous process every five year as if they are new applicants to ensure the very best in animal care, financial stability and visitor experience. Rolling Hills Zoo is proud to have met this challenge since becoming an accredited member of AZA in 2000.

The 10TH ANNUAL SALINA GUNS VS HOSES FOOTBALL event will be Sunday, October 18 at Kansas Wesleyan University, 100 E. Claflin.

Gates open at noon and kick-off is 1:00pm.

Admission is $7 at the gate. Kids 5 and under are free. Guns vs Hoses is a fundraiser that will this year benefit the family of Mighty Max, a young child with serious health challenges.

SALINA ART CENTER announces an expansion of the Art Center Cinema’s film offerings. The Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe, continues to show a new film each week, Friday through Thursday. However, they now offer encore screening of films at 7:30pm the following week, Monday through Thursday. New films continue to show at 5:30 during the week, and the weekend schedule remains unchanged.

This allows people to see two different films on a weeknight, at 5:30 (new) and at 7:30 (encore).

Economic Outlook Conference November 12

The Chamber, in cooperation with the Center for Economic Development and Business Research, Wichita State University, will sponsor an Economic Outlook Conference, Thursday, November 12 at the Salina Country Club. It will be held from 11:30am-2pm. Cost is $75 per person which includes lunch. The program includes national, state, and local experts to provide insights into the current economy. It’s a great opportunity to network with other local business leaders and get their perspectives on the regional economy.

FLSA Seminar for Non-Profit Organizations

Larry Michel, attorney with Kennedy, Berkley, Yarnevich & Williamson, Chtd., will provide information related to the proposed Fair Larry Michel Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Overtime Regulations. The Chamber has partnered with the Greater Salina Community Foundation and Salina Arts & Humanities to present the session which will specifically address the impact the proposed regulations will have on nonprofit organizations. Valerie Andrews, Advisor Consultant, Ebert-Stein Group, has been selected as “Ambassador of the Month” for August.

Saint Francis Community Services, recently completed their new 28,000 square foot, 40 bed residential Treatment Facility at 5097 W. Cloud, and celebrated with an open house and Chamber ribbon cutting.

Three to be Inducted into Business Hall of Fame

Three Salina business persons have been selected to be inducted into the 2015 class of the Salina Business Hall of Fame. They are: Frank Hageman, prominent Salina Frank Hageman banker, (Pioneer Category, 1858-1925); Baalis Kyger Smoot, the Smoot Grain Company and longtime benefactor of the YMCA, (Historic Category, 1926-1975); and Thomas R. Pestinger, owner of Pestinger Heating & Air Conditioning; (Contemporary Category 1976-present).

The induction ceremony will be held Thursday, November 5, noon-1:30pm, at the Salina Country Club. Dr. Andy Tompkins, former Salina USD 305 School Baalis Kyger Smoot Superintendent, and former President/CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents, will be the featured speaker.

Dr. Andy Tompkins The Salina Business Hall of Fame was Featured Speaker established by the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Its purpose is to recognize and honor Salina business leaders, both past and present, who have made extraordinary contributions to Salina, earned the respect of the Thomas R. Pestinger local community and called attention to the Free Enterprise system and its value to our country and citizens in shaping Salina’s way of life.

Each inductee will be recognized with a commemorative plaque. In addition, plaques honoring each inductee will be displayed at the Chamber office, 120 W. Ash. A biography of each inductee will be printed and distributed at the luncheon.

Salina Isis Shriners celebrates at their new facility. Isis Shriners help transport patients and family members to and from Shrine Hospitals where they receive free treatment. 18th Blues Masters at the Crossroads full of surprises

Blues Masters at the Crossroads is stepping it up this year! For their 18th performance they are teaming with the Stiefel Theatre to bring Salina the unmatched Southern Rock superstar Greg Allman performing live, Friday night, October 16! That’s right, Friday night’s show will hail from the Stiefel stage. Switching up the venue on Friday night enables Blues Masters to book acts like Greg Allman that couldn’t play in their 400-seat venue at Blue Heaven Studios.

Organizers believe the vibe at the Stiefel is in perfect keeping with that of Blue Heaven — great acoustics and sightlines. Greg will be preceded on stage Friday by Grammy-winner country blues guitarist Greg Allman Alvin “Youngblood” Hart, guitarist Jimmy D. Lane and zydeco accordion master Clinton Broussard.

Fear not! Saturday will be as good as ever in the same setting as the previous 17 years — the incomparable Blue Heaven Studios, an acoustic marvel so special that fans come each year from as far away as Europe to soak in the blues.
