Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s letter Dear Friends, I am captivated by the cover of this edition of Partners in Giving! Look at the expression on the child’s face, as he gazes intently at the image of St. Joseph and the Child Jesus. The setting is the Florida home of our good friend Dr. Jack Guggino. Each year on March 19 Dr. Guggino prepares a bountiful St. Joseph’s Table and invites family and friends. This attendee, age 7, has forgotten all about his cake, still wrapped in front of him. Such innocence and spiritual intensity leaves me awestruck! Some news to report: • Hundreds tuned in to our Adopt a Sister virtual lunch, resulting in many new members! Chapel rising!
W
hat a difference a month makes! Work on the new St. Joseph Chapel at Mary Help of Christians Academy is proceeding at a fast pace! The photograph below was taken in February. Now, in a matter of weeks, the steel superstructure is in place and the roof is going on! God bless the workers who balance precariously on the beams! It’s been three years since the devastating fire and, all being well, the Chapel will be completed in time for Easter next year.

A virtual “luncheon”
An online celebration
of Adopt a Sister!
lthough the annual Adopt a Sister Luncheon couldn’t be held in person in Tampa this year, it certainly didn’t disappoint. Hundreds of Adoptees invited their friends to gather for a “brown bag” luncheon in front of their PCs to hang out with the Salesian Sisters. The program was held on St. Joseph’s Feast Day, March 19, and lasted one hour.

Attendees of the virtual luncheon received a special treat beforehand to mark the occasion, as The Cookie Queen, Judy Perrone made her famous Salesian Sister cookies. Sr. Kelly Schuster, along with the fun puppet, “Sr. Marianette,” were hosts for the lunch, and what fun they were! Sr. Marianette was played by Sr. Colleen Clair, and the two were very entertaining as they cracked jokes back and forth and even came up with a catchy tune for the phone number 877-OUR-NUNS, the number to call to speak with Sr. Mary Rinaldi in the Development Office to join Adopt a Sister.

A special tribute was given at the end of the show to the late Sr. Rosemary Cordes, who was a large part of the Adopt a Sister program with many Adopters, and was loved by so many. Sr. Rosemary’s video of her making her famous cinnamon toast was played for all to see. Tributes were offered from her former campers at Camp Auxilium who are now all grown up.
The luncheon allowed guests to see and feel what the Adopt a Sister program was all about. One of the nicest surprises in the Adopt a Sister Luncheon video was an update on the Tonner quadruplets, whose parents, Julie and Chris, wished to start a family in 1997. Chris’ mother, Betty, adopted Sr. Clare Perino to pray for them. “We might be asking God for an apple, but He wants to give us an orchard,” Sr. Clare wrote at the time, featured on the 1999 ABC “20/20” program. The quadruplets are now 24: Colette, Nicholaus, Graham, and Lauren!
Life-long friends, from Mexico to the United States
The incredible journey of “Three Amigas”
W
here did you meet your closest friends? Was it in school or at a job? Or perhaps it was because of a shared hobby? For Sr. Carmen Morales, Sr. Mary Arciga, and Sr. Mary Louise Mazzocco, close friends since they were young Salesian Sisters, that answer began on a train from Mexico to the United States in 1957. Sr. Carmen was born in a “city” called Neveria, Querétaro, Mexico, northwest of Mexico City, the statement of which made Sr. Mary Arciga, who was born in Zamora, Michoacán (a bit further west, but much larger and more of an actual “city”), poke her and say, “You weren’t from a city, it was a tiny village!” Sr. Mary Louise chuckled and added, “Well, I am from Chipilo, Puebla, which is southeast of Mexico City, and it’s also bigger than where Sr. Carmen is from!”

go in and out all day; we barely saw them except for prayers and meals, but we spent our time together, so we got to know each other.” When they arrived in New York City, the Sisters of the 12th Street Convent welcomed them and then brought them to the Salesian Sisters’ hub in North Haledon, NJ. After about a week, Sr. Carmen “disappeared!”– as Sr. Mary Arciga described it – and went to take care of the community, parish, linens and laundry at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Roseto, PA. Sr. Mary Louise joined Sr. Gisella Bonfiglio in the kitchen as her helper in feeding the Sisters and students at Mary Help of Christians Academy, working from 5 a.m. to nearly midnight each night preparing hundreds of meals and snacks each day. Sr. Mary Arciga was sent to St. Michael’s in Paterson, NJ, where she was entrusted with running an Oratory and doing social work, visiting the families and trying to find ways to meet their many needs.

that I wanted to be a Salesian Sister. I loved the Oratory and would not miss it for anything, and if I had a family event that kept me away, I would be so upset. I’d think of reasons to spend extra time with the Sisters, even if it meant sweeping their courtyard. Mostly those of us who ‘helped’ goofed around, but the Sisters put up with us.” The Three Amigas eventually met when they each received a mission to go to the United States. None of them had volunteered to leave their country, but Mother Ersilia Crugnola, Provincial Superior at the time, needed to send Sisters to America, and picked them. They packed their small bags and boarded a train that eventually took them to New York City. The Sisters in San Antonio, TX prepared food for them. “Boxes of Kentucky Fried Chicken and boiled eggs to last the trip north,” Sr. Carmen reminisced. There were also 12 Salesian priests and brothers who traveled with them as they were in transit to their final destination, Italy. “They gave us the entire train car,” Sr. Carmen said, “And we would say our prayers and have our meals there. Although more than 60 years have passed since they first set foot on American soil, the Three Amigas have used that time to build a great legacy of families and friends who have grown with them over time. It wasn’t until 2018 that they were reunited in the same community at the Provincial House in Haledon, NJ, after first coming together on the train north in 1957. When asked what about their experience with the Adopt a Sister program, all three shared how honored they feel to accompany their Adopters through happy and hard times. “I know they rely a lot on our prayers for them, but it’s not our prayers that obtain the miracles they need – it’s their faith,” Sr. Carmen says. “We are just praying with them. Their faith makes the Adopt a Sister program work, and we need their prayers, too!”

he Salesian Sisters Partners Circle was founded in 1991 to provide unrestricted funds for urgent needs of the Salesian Sisters and their mission. These include support for capital needs, scholarship assistance, technology upgrades, and funds for those unforeseen situations that require immediate attention (such as the current COVID-19 pandemic). Your annual contribution to this fund empowers the Sisters to continue their mission: To Provide Financial Assistance and Volunteer Services to the Salesian Sisters and to the Young People in their Care for the Advancement of Education, Vocations, and Community Life. The fire which destroyed the Chapel at Mary Help of Christians Academy in May 2018 underscored the vital importance of the Partners Circle Fund, enabling the Sisters to respond quickly in an emergency.

Dear Friends: A message from Sister Joanne
Do not be afraid, for He is risen!
M
ost of us who live in the Northeast remember Superstorm Sandy that occurred in October 2012. The scary weather reports had us worried, and perhaps some of us hoped that the storm would not come, but it did. I remember that moment so well.

I was in the Novitiate in Newton, NJ and I divided the Sisters and Novices into different responsibilities should the storm come. When we were in the chapel reciting evening prayer on October 29th, I heard the winds picking up and the rain fiercely pelting the roof. Within a matter of minutes the storm was hovering over us and we lost power. I told the community to “man your battle stations,” and everyone did their part to keep all safe and secure.
These types of storms are not unfamiliar to us. We are in the Easter Season, and we all know what proceeded that first Easter morning. Nevertheless, great blessings followed the storm of Good Friday, and great blessings will follow this pandemic. After our experience in Newton with Superstorm Sandy, our insurance company paid for a new fence and we received a gift of a generator that would keep the entire facility running should we ever lose power again. This happened all because we went through the storm.
Now, the storm is beginning to ease up, but we still we must be vigilant as we make efforts to pick up the pieces and begin anew.

he Salesian Sisters mourn the passing of a dear friend and benefactor, Luis Garcia, on February 4 in Tampa, FL. He was 84. Born in Havana, Luis obtained his CPA and earned his MBA from the University of South Florida. He started a successful accounting practice, Garcia & Ortiz, with his partner, Louis P. Ortiz. In 1980, he married Mary, the love of his life. Luis had three daughters, and inherited three children from Mary. They all became the “Brady Bunch.” Luis was a generous and loyal friend to the Salesian Sisters and served on the board of the Partners Circle, acting as treasurer for many years. May he rest in peace.

Tommy Lasorda, the legendary manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers who passed away on January 7, was the honored guest at the 1992 Lou Pinnella Roast in Tampa, a benefit for the Salesian Sisters’ Retirement Home Fund. Sr. Mary Rinaldi presented the award to Lasorda. “The Sisters have dedicated their lives to God and to others,” Lasorda said. “We gave something back tonight.” The event raised $25,000. From Mary Help to sailing the Seven Seas
I
n the Livi family, attending the United States Merchant Marine Academy is a family tradition. Catherine and Elizabeth, twins who graduated from Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon, NJ, in 2015, have followed in the footsteps of their seafaring parents, Marilyn and Dale, and their brother, Christian. The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is one of five prestigious federal service academies, along with U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Coast Guard Academy, the Naval Academy (destination for another Livi sibling, Joseph), and the Air Force Academy. For Catherine and Elizabeth, the values of leadership, hard work, and dedication that they learned in their family and applied at a Salesian high school formed the foundation of their future work in the maritime industry.

admitted, “and reminded me that there is greatness and goodness on the other side of all struggle!” Elizabeth also had her difficulties, as the training for a “midshipman” (the title for a student) demands much – mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. She shared, “My favorite scripture is Joshua 1:9: ‘I command you: be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord, your God, is with you wherever you go.’ Whether it’s on land or on sea, this scripture is always a reminder for me of faith, hope, and strength.” As women, Catherine and Elizabeth found themselves as the minority on the male-dominated campus, with only 15% of their graduating class being female. They both cited their time on Mary Help’s student council, as well as assisting with peer ministry, playing lacrosse, and stepping up in various other roles as being crucial to develop the self-confidence they would need as USMMA leaders.

allows them to work on any ocean, on any kind and size of vessel. Describing their current jobs, Elizabeth says, “I’m a Third Mate in the U.S. Merchant Marine and a Strategic Sealift Officer for the U.S. Naval Reserve. As a Third Mate, I’m responsible for navigating a vessel, conducting safety inspections, and leading cargo operations. Things such as your cellphone, shoes, even the fruit in a grocery store all come by ships, something many people don’t ever think about.” While at USMMA, she completed an entire year at sea training on different types of ships, including tankers and car carriers. “I currently sail on a product tanker carrying fuel for the U.S. Navy,” Catherine explains. “I sail as a Third Mate Unlimited, meaning I am qualified to sail on any type of ship, any tonnage, any ocean. Onboard I am in charge of navigating the ship while at sea, and discharging and loading cargo when in port.” The Third Mate is also the designated Safety Officer in charge of maintaining all lifesaving and firefighting equipment. Due to the fact that the USMMA is a federal service academy, Catherine and Elizabeth are required to pay back their service with five years’ sailing and eight years in the Naval Reserve as Strategic Sealift Officers.

Both Catherine and Elizabeth freely admit that their line of work is not for everyone, as it requires strong people skills and the ability to respond creatively and quickly in sometimes high-stress situations. When asked if they would both do it again, each responded with an enthusiastic “Yes!”
“Remember, ‘Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring!” Catherine says. “If you want to accomplish something worthwhile in your life, be prepared for struggle, but also a lot of joy as you achieve it. With the right support network, and a strong faith, you can do it.”
MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS ACADEMY, North Haledon, NJ – The Leprechaun Leap was a virtual 5K Run/Walk in support of Mary Help. Participants completed the distance on their own time, on their own course, at their own pace, indoors or outdoors. About 100 individuals participated and dedicated nearly 300 miles of their time, energy, and sponsorships to support Mary Help. Smiles abounded in social media posts tagged #MHCLeap.

In the past, the religion department hosted a St. Joseph Table for the school, filled with copious amounts of food. Mindful of safety protocols, administrators surprised students with a delivery of cookies and blessed St. Joseph “lucky” fava beans. ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL, Hawthorne, NJ – In celebration of “Read Across America,” Mrs. Virginia Gagnon, English-Language Arts Department Coordinator, organized a virtual reading for students. CORPUS CHRISTI HOLY ROSARY SCHOOL, Port Chester, NY – Second-grader Bella Echandy is proud to show her St. Patrick’s puppet made in her class on March 17. Two days later, the school celebrated the Feast of St. Joseph with a COVID-adapted St. Joseph’s Table! Students collected food items for the local soup kitchen, filling the school hallway.
ST. THERESA SCHOOL, Kenilworth, NJ – Talk about a LOT of cereal! During Lent, St. Theresa’s collected more than 100 boxes of cereal for almsgiving, donating all to the St. Theresa Food Pantry. But first, Christian Lomuntad and Ezekiel Qersdyn, with the help of Sr. Rachel Lauritsen, created a huge domino train of cereal boxes in the gym and then set it off to spectacular effect!

Honoring Mary and our “unofficial” mothers
H
ow would you describe your mother? Do you start with her personality or physical characteristics? Something that is just “so her” that, every time you see it, you think of her? Although not all of us have ideal relationships with our mothers, there is usually something or someone in our lives that we associate with the idea of a “mother” which brings us a positive feeling. When I was growing up, although my family wasn’t religious, my mother had a porcelain bust of the Virgin Mary. At least my mother said it was the Virgin Mary; it could have even been a medieval queen for all I knew, but for my mother, it was a Marian image, so it got prime place in the china cabinet, a hint of her Catholic roots. We didn’t go to church, but at least Mary watched over the family from her perch, and I often felt that image signified an invisible but somehow guardian presence in our home. Not that the statue itself was magical, but it reminded me that perhaps there really was someone watching over us, even if I didn’t know her that well.

It’s something that has helped me, since this will be my eighth year since my mother’s passing. Like the images of the Blessed Mother, I see hints of my mom and the power of maternal love from time to time in the women around me, reminding me that I am not completely “motherless” but surrounded by many mother-figures who support and guide me, including the Blessed Mother. From my first encounter through her image in the china cabinet to her adopting me as a “Daughter of Mary Help of Christians” (our official name as Salesian Sisters), Mary is a maternal force in my life, and I “I am surrounded hope is in yours, too.

After I became a Salesian Sister, I often admired the different statues of the Blessed Mother that Sr. Josephine Carini had collected over the years and which were displayed in cabinets near the administrative offices of Mary Help of Christians Academy. It always amazed me how Our Lady was adaptable; every culture could look at her, call her “Mother,” and see their faces reflected in hers. From the ebony carved images from Africa, to the delicately painted statue of Our Lady of La Vang of Vietnam (shown above), all of them expressed each culture’s idea of maternal love, authority, and strength.
The Blessed Mother has many different “faces.” Try to find one you identify with, one perhaps connected to your culture or family, and put it somewhere you can regularly see it. I have one, and every time I look at it, it reminds me that I am surrounded by strong women and I can be strong, too. Our Lady is a real presence in our lives if we invite her in. She has many different outfits and is ready for any occasion! Invite her in – you might be surprised at how great it feels to have her as a mom. For those of you who are celebrating with your mom this year, give her a hug for me. For those who, like me, remember their mothers who have passed, know you’re not alone. You are in our prayers, and the Blessed Mother is praying for you, too. Mary, our Mother, pray for us. Happy Mother’s Day!
