Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s Letter Dear Friends, The new school year is in full swing, and for the Salesian Sisters our weekdays (and often Saturdays) are filled with the joy of teaching, nurturing in our young people a love of discovery and learning that will sustain them their entire lives. On the cover, students at Mary Help of Christians Academy, sporting their very attractive new school uniforms, take advantage of the beautiful fall weather to work on their homework outside, while making good use of the laptop computers and tablets provided by the school. Thanks to Our Lord, the intercession of His Mother, and the prayers and financial support of all of YOU, our Province of St. Joseph has been blessed with Vocations! Six outstanding young women are taking their first formation steps as Aspirants, and you can read their inspiring stories on pages 6-7. In addition, 22 other Sisters are in various stages of their spiritual journeys (see pages 4-5), living out our Salesian mission to young people every day. Each one represents the future of our Order. Is it any wonder that our celebration of Thanksgiving this year will be extra-special? Peace,

Generous Hearts Open Even Wider!

I

t’s hard to believe that five months have passed since the devastating fire that destroyed our beautiful St. Joseph Chapel in North Haledon, NJ. The healing process, like the rebuilding effort, has been slow but steady. We continue to be heartened by the messages of hope and generous donations which pour in from every corner of our country. How truly blessed we are. Close to home, the former Superintendent of Schools for the Paterson Diocese, Monsignor John J. Carroll, now Pastor of Our Lady of the Magnificat Parish in Kinnelon, NJ, called with his concern and an offer to help raise funds for the restoration of the Chapel. I was so touched when he told me, “During my years in office, I could always count on the Salesian Sisters to jump in and help whenever a school needed staffing. They never turned me down. Now, it is my time with my parish to support you.” One recent Sunday, a basket was passed at each Mass, raising a total of $8,320. Thank you, Monsignor, and your wonderful parishioners! God bless you all! – Sr. Mary Rinaldi, FMA

Making Vocation! Headlines Around the Province

Thanks be to God, Vocations are Thriving!

Truly, our cup runneth over with blessings, with 28 Salesian Sisters (pictured here and on page 6) in various stages of formation! Here some of our future Sisters share their stories and gratitude. Please continue to pray for them!

T

he day finally came, after four years of initial formation, August 5, 2018. That was the day that I took my First Vows of chastity, poverty and obedience as a Daughter of Mary Help of Christians. I was ready for that day to give myself totally to Jesus while being surrounded and supported by my family and my Sisters. Yes, there were nerves, but the nerves were overcome by the joy that was in my heart of

being totally His. It was a beautiful day that I will cherish in my heart forever. I give thanks to God and to Mary, our Blessed Mother, for calling me to be part of this wonderful family. Thank you for all of your prayers, and please continue to pray for me as I will continue to pray for all of you. Sr. Joyce Bermejo and Sr. Molly Heine both took their First Vows

“A

re you gonna sleep tonight?” Sr. Domenica Di Peri asked the day before my entry into the Novitiate. Many other Sisters also asked me if I was nervous. Before and during the ceremony, I had great peace because I felt I was fully complying with what the Lord willed for me. During the ceremony on August 5, Sr. Joanne Holloman read a letter that St. Mary Mazzarello wrote to one of her Sisters, and the main exhortation was for the Sister to become a great Saint. She then gave me the Novice medal, which has Mary Help of Christians on one side and the Institute’s coat of arms and the motto, “Da mihi animas, cetera tolle” (“Give me souls, take away the rest”) on the other. The reception of my medal, along with my blessed habit, will always be a reminder to me to do all things for the salvation of souls, especially those of the young. Please pray for me and my formation! – Sr. Janna San Juan

A

s I prepared for the day of my Perpetual Profession, I looked back to my first profession six years ago and remembered how nervous (nauseous!) I was. All those nerves went away, however, as soon as I entered through the doors of St. Joseph Chapel on August 5 and saw the faces of all my friends and family. I distinctly remember feeling as if I had entered Heaven and was reassured by all the love and support surrounding me. Sadly, I didn’t enter through the doors of our North Haledon chapel this year, but through the beautiful doors of the Parish of St. Anthony. However, as I walked down the aisle, I was greeted by the same radiant faces of my Sisters, family, and friends – all those whose fervent prayers sustained my vocation. I thank God for the blessing of such a joy-filled day, for all those who attended, for those who made the celebration possible, and for calling me to this beautiful life. – Sr. Joo Yun Park, FMA

Meet Our Six New Aspirants!

Sr. Joanne Holloman and Sr. Helene Godin prepare to cut the cake to welcome the new Aspirants: Kathleen Deighan, Nicole Daly, Amy Nguyen, Shannon Stout, Garcia Jean-Bart, and Erin Boeckmann. These young women are just beginning their formation journeys.

I

grew up in a small town in Missouri where the population was less than 300 people. My older brother graduated from West Point. My mother works for the state of Missouri, and my father is a fireman for the Jefferson City Fire Department. I met a Salesian Sister back in high school, and was very moved by her love and compassion not only for God, but for the teens and children as well. In college, as I ventured to find Christ, I was constantly brought back to the feeling that I, too, should share in the joy and love that I saw in that Salesian Sister so many years ago! Fun fact: My parents also run a petting zoo, garden center, and an antique store. How they manage these businesses while both having full-time jobs is an act of God! Erin Boeckmann, Westphalia, MO

I

grew up in a house that was loud and full of life (it still is!). As I began to discern my vocation, I knew that I wanted to be a part of a big, joyful family, centered around the love of the Lord. When I first met the Salesian Sisters, I was filled with such a deep sense of peace, like I was home. I thought to myself, “I want to be like them. I want to live holiness as they do.” With the help of my ever-growing family, I am excited to embark on this journey to discover the Lord’s will for me and how He is calling me to love. Fun fact: My favorite animal is a cow... and I got to milk one last summer! Shannon Stout, Dobbs Ferry, NY

y family and I immigrated to the U.S. when I was eight years old. We have been

living in Georgia since then. I am the oldest of three girls, and have an older half-brother who resides in Florida. I attended Emory University in Atlanta, obtaining a degree in Anthropology and Human Biology. After graduation I was still deciding which career path to take, between medical school and physician assistant school. From my first visit with the Salesian Sisters, I was struck by their warmth, love of family, and cheerfulness in serving each other and the young. I was attracted to their dynamic community life and their love for the young. They don’t just educate the young, but they also play with them, form them in their faith, and accompany them through their life journey. Fun fact: I have never broken any bones nor had chicken pox! Garcia Jean-Bart, Atlanta, GA

I

am the oldest of two children; my brother and I are 17 months apart! Fun Fact: My fourth-grade teacher (who was a lay woman) in Catholic school was the first person to introduce me to the idea of discerning a vocation. While studying to become a teacher at Northeastern University, I went on an alternative spring break trip to Mary Help of Christians Center in Tampa, FL. After a week of complete fun and growth under the care of the Salesians, I knew that I wanted to be an educator according to St. John Bosco’s tradition. After teaching for two years, I had an experience during Eucharistic Adoration that led me to attend a “Come and See” with the Sisters who were already living in the way that I had always desired to live: in community and for young people. Nicole Daly, Boston, MA

I

am the oldest of three in my family with a large age gap between the siblings, but often times many assume I am the youngest due to my height! I am humbled to be a part of the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement (VEYM) at my parish and have learned so much from our dedicated leaders as well as the young people. Fun Fact: I discovered the Salesian Sisters through a YouTube video called “Light of Love.” This hour-long video changed my life in the last 15 minutes when it featured the Salesian Sisters. I realized I wanted to respond to the Lord’s call by bringing the young to Him and Him to the young, with the Salesian spirit! Amy Nguyen, Franklin, MA

B

eing the third oldest of nine children, I’ve always been surrounded by young people. I

also have three nieces and one on the way! I first heard about the Salesian Sisters at a Discernment Weekend in college. I was really moved when I learned of their mission and charism to love and educate the youth. Fun Fact: I’ve always known from a young age that I wanted to work with children. The energy and joy that exuberated from Sr. Colleen Clair when she talked about working and playing with the kids stuck with me. After college I taught second grade for several years at a Catholic school in Virginia. I loved it so much. However, as my prayer life grew I knew Christ was calling me to be His bride. I finally found myself at one of the Salesian Sisters’ “Come and See” weeks. I felt so at home with the community, I had an application in my hand by the end of my stay. Rest in Peace, Sr. Frances Gumino

O

n September 9, 2018, at the St. Joseph Provincial Center in Haledon, NJ, our dear Sr. Frances Gumino, FMA, passed away. She was one month shy of her 95th birthday, and had been professed as a Salesian Sister for 75 years, a jubilee she celebrated with great joy and fanfare this past July. Sr. Frances was born in Pittston, PA, on October 16, 1923. She was the first of two sisters and a brother. She had the blessing of growing up in a family rich in faith and affection. Her father worked in the coal mines, while mother was a good seamstress and homemaker. “My parents were hardworking people, simple, and faithful to each other,” Sr. Frances recalled. “When the coal mines began to close, my father relocated us to Paterson, NJ, near my grandparents. We attended St. Michael’s Church and there I met the Salesian Sisters who prepared me for my first Holy Communion.” In 1934, when Frances was only nine years old, her mother died of pneumonia. Her father enrolled the four young children in St. Michael School. One year later, he decided to send the girls to St. Michael’s Orphanage in North Haledon. “It was very difficult for me to leave my father, but the loving welcome of the Sisters captured me,” Sr. Frances recalled. “When my father came to visit us, I told him that I would like to remain. He was very happy of my decision.” In 1936, Frances’ father died in a railroad accident. Sr. Amelia Aichino knew it was his wish for the children to remain at the orphanage to continue their schooling. “The Sisters made up for the loss of my parents by their special love and care,” Sr. Frances remembered. “My grandmother and relatives would come every Sunday to visit us and saw how happy we were.” After

Visit us online! www.salesiansisters.org

much prayer and guidance, Frances was admitted into the formation program in 1938. In 1941 she entered the Novitiate, and on August 5, 1943, made her religious profession. Her first assignment was to remain in North Haledon to teach primary grades. “I loved the children and remembered how lovingly the Sisters cared for me; I wanted to do the same,” she said. Sr. Frances continued her studies and obtained her B.S. Degree from Seton Hall University. Thus began her school apostolate as a teacher and principal. During her long life as a Salesian Sister she brought her giftedness to many places, including St. Michael, Atlantic City, NJ; St. Michael, Paterson; Holy Rosary, Reading, PA; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Roseto, PA; St. Anthony, Paterson; St. Anthony, Elizabeth, NJ; St. Theresa, Succasunna, NJ; St. Joseph, Tampa, FL; St. John Bosco, Woodstock, VA; Our Lady of the Grace, Johnston, RI; Our Lady of the Lake, Westport, WI; and St. Stephen, Paterson, NJ. In 1959 she arrived at Corpus Christi Parish in Port Chester, NY, where she remained for eight years, working side- by-side with the saintly Salesian, Fr. Peter Rinaldi. She called this time the happiest of her life. Sr. Frances loved to repeat the saying, “Be a Salesian and see the world. I surely did and everywhere I went I met wonderful people.” The Educational Method of St. John Bosco, based on Reason, Religion and Loving Kindness, was lived by Sr. Frances in a tangible way and, from its application, she saw blossoming an abundance of good fruit.

For many years, Sr. Frances was also the Provincial Delegate of the Salesian Cooperators. She generously dedicated the best of her gifts to this branch of the Salesian family. She followed them with interest; she listened to them and helped them as best she could in moments of difficulty. Everyone loved Sr. Frances for her openness, affable manners, joy, and genuine Salesian spirit. She was able to interweave deep and lasting friendships. Sr. Frances had formed a large network of collaborators, cooperators, past pupils, benefactors and friends for whom she was a beacon of hope, a point of reference, a strong friend to lean on. Her goal was always to take them to Jesus. When her physical strength did not permit her to continue in the active apostolate, Sr. Frances continued to evangelize with the pen and the Internet. Sr. Frances had a great devotion to Mary, Help of Christians. The evening of September 8, the nurse’s aide who was attending to her needs heard Sr. Frances sing “Happy Birthday” to the Blessed Mother, because on this day the Church celebrates the Feast of Mary’s Birth. While singing she was indicating that soon she would see her. She looked so happy that evening! At 5:30 the following morning, without any sign of discomfort, Sr. Frances left this earth to leap into the arms of Mary, who had been her true Mother throughout her long life. May she rest in peace, and may she intercede for us. – Sr. Joanne Holloman, FMA, Provincial

Gratitude Reinforced on a Mission Trip

G

ratitude. It’s a word very familiar to us in our Salesian Spirituality. St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello understood well the necessity of this virtue and how essential it is to our optimism and cheerfulness. For me, it also sums up my experience of being sent by my Sisters for a month-long missionary exchange in the Dominican Republic. This summer I had the opportunity to share life and work alongside our Salesian Sisters in Santo Domingo. It was a true gift to witness the ministry our Sisters are doing among the poor and offer my five loaves and two fishes in the mission. It wasn’t always easy, between language barriers, super high temperatures, and trying to win over the girls with their typical teen attitudes, but it was an eyeopening experience of looking for and recognizing God’s Providence in challenging circumstances. The most memorable day of my stay was the day we went to visit the barrio where the girls attending our summer camp lived. All summer they had been inviting us to come to their homes, something the Sisters do regularly. So we started our journey by crossing the highway and then descending a steep stone and cement staircase. The smell was the first indication that we were crossing into another reality. A pungent, rotten, foul odor wafted toward us as if to say, “Welcome to the neighborhood. If you can’t handle this, don’t continue.” As we walked down the winding, dirt alleyways strewn with trash and building materials, and crawling with dogs, cats and chickens, we were met by many polite “Good morning’s” and then, finally, the excited smiles

They were not ashamed of their simple, woodframed, corrugated tin covered houses, but were delighted to have visitors. We smiled as they eagerly called into their houses to the rest of the family and soon we were embracing parents, siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews. I could not ignore the poverty in which they lived: the dirt floors which turned to mud during

the rainy season, the lack of running water and electricity, the mothers bent over a small fire to cook their meals. But even more than that, I was struck by their joy and gratitude at receiving us, their guests. They didn’t have much according to the world, but they were happy with what they had. They understood that they were part of our family, that the Sisters and counselors loved them and wanted to keep them safe. They lived humbly, simply, and joyfully. They showed me that day the true meaning of gratitude and were a living example of Don Bosco’s words: “Everything fades away, but not our gratitude. We shall always pray that God will abundantly bless those who have been so good to us.” – Sr. April Hoffman, FMA

The Ups and Downs Dear Friends ... A Message from Sr. Joanne

O

ne evening, as I was driving home from visiting one of our communities, I was listening to the news on the radio. I was interested in hearing the weather and traffic, but first had to endure the sports and financial reports. Happily, the job market and the Dow were up, which is good news, although I don’t consider myself an expert on the stock market by any means. The radio declared the Yankees won a game, so I knew many of the Sisters in my community who are hardcore Yankee fans were happy. When the report finally reached traffic and weather, it announced a 45-minute delay going towards the George Washington Bridge, and warned that a hurricane was approaching Louisiana, where we have Sisters. Listening to these various segments, I realized our life is sometimes like the hot and cold of the weather, or the congestion or smooth sailing of traffic, not to mention the ups and downs of the stock market! This past summer, the Salesian Sisters have lived through an array of such events. We had the joy of having one new Novice enter the Novitiate (year 3 and 4 of initial training as a Salesian Sister). Two Novices made their first profession and two Sisters made their final vows, which is at the end of a 10-13 year training process. We also had the joy of six young women entering as Aspirants, who are just beginning to live with us and learn our life. Yet, on the flip side, we had three Sisters hospitalized, and our dear Sr. Frances Gumino went to Heaven. We opened a new house

Visit us online! www.salesiansisters.org

in Surrey, British Colombia, Canada, and are currently transitioning our ministry at Camp Auxilium to meet the needs of young people today. While we provided education, faith formation, and youth activities for thousands of youth in our Province, one of our students was in a fatal car accident over the summer. We

“As I pray the Rosary, I find comfort remembering that our Blessed Mother also went through the ups and downs of life with her Son, Jesus.” get weekly prayer intentions from family members and students who are battling serious illnesses and who need extra prayers. Life certainly has a lot of joys and sorrows, doesn’t it? I am sure similar events have touched your life, too. In the last year, you’ve probably attended weddings, baptisms, family reunions, and funerals. Maybe you carpooled a van full of kids to and from school and sports practice, while some drove their last child to college, with the ensuing adjustment of the

“empty nest.” Perhaps you celebrated milestones in the lives of your loved ones and friends, but also accompanied them through hardships and sickness. I find comfort in remembering that our Blessed Mother also went through the ups and downs of life with her Son, Jesus. When praying the Rosary, we think about the joyful, sorrowful, bright, and glorious times in their lives. This simple prayer helps us to remember that we are not alone, that Jesus and Mary are with us in every situation and circumstance of life and they understand what we are going through. Our loving God is always with us, supporting us and giving us the strength we need to tackle the ups and downs. The month of October is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. Perhaps take some time this month to add a decade of the Rosary to your day, or gather as a family to pray a Rosary together. Some people even like to pray the Rosary as they drive, and there are recordings that can be used for that. However you choose to make the Rosary a special part of your day, know that when you are praying it, Mary is holding you close in all the ups and downs of life, and that I am praying for you and your families in my daily Rosary. Please remember to pray for me, my friends, and have a beautiful autumn! Sr. Joanne Holloman is the Superior of the Province of St. Joseph.

On the Journey with Sister B

A Stormy Ride

I

have this inability to balance myself in row boats. Perhaps it’s related to my lack of balance on bicycles and roller blades. I even tried stilts once, which ended in a permanent scar that daily reminds me of my klutziness. Whenever I hear the Gospel reading of the disciples being stuck in a sudden storm on the Sea of Galilee (Mark 4:35-41), I wonder how long I would have lasted without tilting myself overboard or tripping over ropes. I have been thinking about that Gospel a lot lately. Being a Catholic is a lot like being in a boat. We are surrounded by other disciples of Jesus and we go about our business trying to be productive and good, like the fishermen did. Jesus is among us, and we feel secure in His presence.

Lately, that story of the stormy boat ride in Mark 4 keeps coming to mind, especially this part: “A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion” (Mark 4:37-38). I don’t think there could be a better visual for what it feels like to be a Catholic right now in the United States. “A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat.” The boat seems like it’s going to capsize, and Jesus appears to be sleeping. Like the disciples, we may be feeling scared, frustrated, anxious, confused, disoriented, and angry. “Jesus, do something!” we pray, yet He seems to be napping. With the disciples, so many of us are crying out, “Teacher,

don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38). One of St. John Bosco’s most famous dreams is called the “Two Pillars.” The chapel of Sacred Heart Retreat Center and Novitiate in Newton, NJ, has a stained-glass window version of the dream. It shows Don Bosco gazing up at a large ship at whose helm is the Pope, surrounded by bishops. Amidst a furious tempest, smaller boats are approaching the ark of the Church and

“God is ever faithful, and if we trust in Him, we will make it through life’s hardest, scariest storms.” launching at it books, cannon balls, and whatever else they can. Had Don Bosco been alive in our time, I think he would have seen cell phones, iPads, newspapers and televisions being thrown at the boat. During the dream the Pope is injured and replaced by another Pope. Eventually he anchors the Church safely between two massive columns atop which are the Eucharist and Mary Help of Christians. Both the story of the disciples’ stormy boat ride and Don Bosco’s dream remind of us of one thing: God is ever faithful, and if we trust in Him, we will make it through life’s hardest, scariest storms. In the Gospel, Jesus wakes from His nap at what seems to be the final moment before capsizing and, with two words, He stills the sea. In Don Bosco’s dream, once the boat

of the Church is finally anchored in the Eucharist and Mary, the attacks prove futile. In both situations, we can almost feel the racing hearts and damp exhaustion in the boats. Things seem so hopeless, but at the last moment victory is assured through Christ. These are hard times, but the Church has been through hard times before. I believe this storm we are facing will lead us to have a holier, more faithful Christian community. We do not need to be afraid; Jesus is with us, just as He was with the disciples in their boat. If we stay anchored in the Eucharist and Our Lady, we will find stability amidst the most furious attacks. We are Catholic because we love the Eucharist and Our Lady, not because the Church is full of perfect people; I’m certainly not perfect. We are right to expect holiness from our leaders, but I must begin with being holy myself. If I can grow in holiness, so will the Church, because I am a part of the Church. If I am anchored in Christ, the Church will be stronger. If we begin with ourselves, the Church will be transformed. Be sure of my prayers for all of you who are struggling along with me through these hard times. We will get through this, as we always have. If we quiet our hearts in prayer we will hear Jesus whisper to the storm in our souls, jutst as He did on the boat: “Be still” (Mark 4:39). – Sr. Brittany Harrison, FMA Sr. Brittany is the Campus Minister and Theology Department Chair at Mary Help of Christians Academy.

I

n an effort to keep the Salesian Spirit alive in all children, September 11th brought together four Tampa, FL, schools, including Villa Madonna, for the annual Salesian Youth Rally. The day began with Mass and fun activities followed all over the campus so kids could understand and feel St. John Bosco’s dream for youth that continues to this day. Above, eighth grade boys stop to enjoy lunch, sporting a smile as they are having a blast at the Rally. A fun day was had by more than 800 youth!

SALESIAN YOUTH CENTER/ BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, TAMPA, FL – Were the kids excited to see NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneer tight end player O.J. Howard, who made a special visit on September 25? You bet they were! And Howard handed out 200 pairs of sneakers to the Salesian Youth Center kids! On the same day, United Healthcare and its mascot came to talk to the kids about taking care of themselves and to show them how to have healthy habits. Salesian Youth Report IMMACULATA-LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL, MIAMI, FL – As Pope Francis convenes the special Synod on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment at the Vatican this month, ILS students in the Peer Ministry Class have been hard at work on the 2018-19 Pastoral Theme. Taking inspiration from the Salesian Rector Major’s Strenna as well as Pope Francis’ exhortation, Gaudete et Esultate (“Rejoice and be glad”), students hope that all will come to realize, as Pope Francis stated, “that our very lives are a mission, and that we are each called to holiness.”

VILLA MADONNA SCHOOL, TAMPA, FL – Smiles galore these hot fall days at Villa Madonna! Above,Villa parents get a pre-Ice Cream Social workout pushing their kids on the swings! Hats off to Katiuska Pacheco, with daughter Elizabeth (EC-3); Carisa Barnhill, with daughter Reese (EC-3); and José Martinez with son Elijah (kindergarten).
