Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for a clash against a Worcester Warriors team led by a man you’ll all be very familiar with. Steve Diamond was part of the fabric of this club for so long, so on behalf of everyone at Sale Sharks, welcome back Dimes. The place, and the club, still echoes of Steve and so much of what we’re building now was started by him. I’m sure we’ll go for a beer after the game but until then, it’s all business because we know we’ve got a huge challenge on our hands to continue our recent winning run against a powerful, physical team. We wouldn’t expect anything less from a team put
together by Steve, but for us it’s all about focusing on what we do. If we do that, then we’ve got a great chance of winning the game. We’ve had an inconsistent start to the season – including a really disappointing performance and defeat at Worcester – but I felt after the Clermont game that we’d turned a corner and that has been
proved right with three really good performances against Ospreys, Leicester Tigers and Harlequins. As a Director of Rugby it’s been so pleasing to see the boys rewarded for the work they’ve been putting in in training. All three games were full of quality, energy, and togetherness, as well as all the passion and power that we expect. We knew they were games we had to win if we wanted to kick on in the second half of the season and the big challenge now is to keep pushing, keep working and keep winning. We’re in a good spot now and we’re ready to attack the rest of the season in both the Premiership and the Champions Cup, which returns in April. The Quins game saw the return of three really important players in Cobus Wiese, Faf de Klerk and Manu Tuilagi. I know you’ll be as excited as I am to see all three back in a Sharks shirt at the AJ Bell Stadium after long lay-offs. All three are chomping at the bit to get going and to show you what you’ve been missing. Manu, in particular, loved it. We spoke after the game and he was really happy to be back doing what he does best. I thought he looked even more powerful against Harlequins even though he’s actually lost a bit more weight. I know a lot of people will want to see him back in an England shirt soon, but he needs games to build his fitness so we’re buzzing that we’ve got him again
for today’s fixture. Of course we’re still missing one, in England captain Tom Curry. Watching Tom lead England out last week against Scotland was a really proud moment for everyone at the club. We made sure we were in our team hotel in plenty of time to watch the game together, and even though I know some of our lads were wishing they were playing in the match, everyone was willing Tom to go well. The way to get back in that England team is by putting in performances for Sale Sharks and that’s what we’re all focused on today. Enjoy the game. Alex.

Every position in the Sharks team is hotly-contested, but none more so than at hooker, where Alex is blessed with four internationals to pick from. The longestserving Shark among the quartet is Curtis Langdon and after eyecatching cameos off the bench in recent games, the 24-year-old is back in possession of the number two shirt today, and ready to make his case to keep hold of it.
He said: “This squad is full of quality so everyone knows they have to be at their very best every single week to get selected. The hookers are no different. There are four of us and it’s so competitive because all four of us are capable of playing at a high level. “We have all had injuries at different times and that’s given us all chances. At the start of the season Alex was rotating all four of us a fair bit too, but I think now he wants some consistency so it’s up to us to prove that we deserve the place. I want this shirt and I want to play as much as possible in the remaining games of the season.” Last season was a breakthrough season for Curtis, with a play-off appearance for Sharks followed by an England call-up for the summer games against Canada and the USA. The plan was to kick on and cement a place in Alex’s team for the new Premiership season but injuries and fierce competition for places meant that was less than straightforward.
I’M NOT GOING TO LIE, IT HAS BEEN FRUSTRATING AT TIMES BUT T HE CHALLENGE IS ALWAYS TO KEEP WORKING AND BE READY TO TAKE T HE CHANCES WHEN T HEY COME. He said: “I had three weeks away with England and I was really excited to get back to Sale and get going but with four hookers I knew that I wouldn’t be playing every single week. “I’m not going to lie, it has been frustrating at times but the challenge is always to keep working and be ready to take the chances when they come. It can be tough but you can’t spend too long being upset. We all have a job to do, to help the team prepare for the next fixture. “And when I have come on as a replacement I’ve tried to make as big an impact as possible and show that I’m ready.” An inconsistent first half to the season has been followed by three

big wins in consecutive weeks against Ospreys, Leicester Tigers and Harlequins. And now Curtis is targeting a strong second half and a push towards the top four spots. He said: “We’ve got loads of lads coming back from injury and the mood in the camp is really good. We have been talking a lot about how many times we’ve started well but then fallen away and I think the Quins game was our first full, 80-minute performance. “Worcester beat us earlier in the season and we know that on that day we were nowhere near good enough. We don’t need any extra motivation but if we did, that game is there.
physical and up for the fight so we have to be too. We need to start strongly and then have an even better finish.” After getting a taste of international rugby in the summer, Curtis is desperate to get back in Eddie Jones’ thoughts. He added: “We know that with the quality we’ve got in the squad we can put a big winning run together and make this a season to remember. “Getting back in the England squad is a massive target for me, but I know that only happens if I’m in the Sale team week in, week out. Today is just the start.”
“We know Dimes will have them ready and we know what kind of team we’re going to be facing. He’s going to make sure they’re

ChiLdren’S MentaL heaLth Week Sale Sharks stars past and present including World Cup winners Jason Robinson and Faf de Klerk have opened up about their mental health challenges as the club marked Children’s Mental Health Week with a series of special videos. Sharks Women’s stars Georgie Perris-Redding and Catie Benson, as well as England flanker Ben Curry, who is a champion for children’s charity Place2be, also feature in the videos.

All five tackle a series of questions covering how they deal with adversity, how they focus on processes rather than outcomes, dealing with setbacks, and the challenges of feeling unable to make progress.
But he said that adversity drove him to become one of rugby’s most decorated players.
And they’re all asked what advice they’d give to their younger selves. Former England captain and Sharks’ non-exec director Jason said that being told he was too small and not strong enough as a youngster was tough to take.
“When things don’t go right, it’s about how you deal with it. It can either be a negative or you can turn it into a positive. I turned it into a positive to say ‘I’m going to show you, I’m going to keep working hard.’
He said: “I was never one of the elite players when I was younger but I wanted it, and I was hungry.
Georgie Perris-Re dding “Whatever you’re doing, enjoy it. I’d tell my younger self to dream big. I grew up with nothing in one of most deprived areas of Leeds, but my journey is testament to the fact that if you give it your best and work hard, one day your dreams can come true.”
WHEN THINGS DON’T GO RIGHT, IT’S ABOUT HOW YOU DEAL WITH IT. IT CAN EITHER BE A NEGATIVE OR YOU CAN TURN IT INTO A POSITIVE... WHATEVER YOU’RE DOING, ENJOY IT. I’D TELL MY YOUNGER SELF TO DREAM BIG. JA S O N R O B I N S O N
Sharks Women’s forward Georgie said she always dreamed of playing professional sport as a child, but she admitted it’s not always gone to plan. She said: “Learning that you don’t always win is part of the process. Coping with setbacks is something you learn along the way. You’re not just given the answer. “Rugby is such a high-pressure environment and you always have to perform. Sometimes you can feel like you’re not improving and you can feel a bit stuck but you have to keep going.

low points but I was able to embrace the challenge and learn from it. “It’s great to have targets so you can see your progression. But the aim is to be present not perfect. Have those targets but don’t get too flustered if you don’t hit them. Stay in the moment and affect what you can affect and trust the process. Give it everything.”
Catie Benson “I’ve always dreamed of playing international rugby and it’s something I’m working so hard to achieve.” Sharks and England flanker Ben said a serious shoulder injury last year, which kept him out of action for more than three months, provided one of the first major setbacks in his career.
IT’S GREAT TO HAVE TARGETS SO YOU CAN SEE YOUR PROGRESSION. BUT THE AIM IS TO BE PRESENT NOT PERFECT.
But he said the injury was a blessing in disguise because it forced him to focus on the process rather than the outcome. He said: “When I was younger I thought my progression would be smooth. I was a bit naïve because the reality is that you get obstacles weekly. “I had my first serious injury last season and that was a big shock to the system. But looking back now it was a blessing. Well it’s been some turnaround since we sat down and put pen to paper before the Leicester game! We started that game in 11th, having looked bright but lost away to Clermont and had a comfortable but unsurprising win over a depleted Ospreys side. Just two games later and the league leaders and champions of England have been dispatched, both with five point wins (and no points for either of them). You wonder what the pessimistic sections of our fanbase (us included) are going to complain about if it carries on like this. The first half of the Leicester game was a slow burn introduction to the fireworks that were to follow,
with Tigers looking strong and the Sharks still looking like we were a team shorn of a bit of confidence, not helped by playing against a subtly impactful wind. Luke James has been probably the stand-out player of the last two games from 15 and he was a rare bright spark in a slightly frustrating first 40. And then the second half happened. Ben Curry pops up from seemingly nowhere (presumably this is why Eddie never sees him to pick him for England) to stroll in, then Arron Reed reaches mach speed. Dan Du Preez tops off some superb form with a chargedown and gallops in from distance, thanks to some fantastic counter ruck work from Curtis Langdon, and then after a couple of AJ penalties to get us back in front, Tom Roebuck rises to pluck the ball out of the air and put a very large cherry on top of the cake.
But, but, but – next up was Quins, whose style of play has always hurt us. It was away, and we haven’t won at the Stoop in the league since Tom Curry was just an age grade captain. It was a mammoth task, made harder by the fact we were still missing a chunk of top players to injury and we were depleted by England call ups.
to thank him for all he’s done for the club. Giving him a win might be too far though. We’re sure he’ll understand.
Alex, James & Lewis
Next thing you know we’re 22-0 up playing scintillating rugby and making Quins look like… well us about two months ago actually. Seriously, there were too many joys in that Quins game to fit them into two pages of a programme so we won’t try, but safe to say the future is incredibly bright and the present isn’t looking too bad either. The academy talent is firing, and the international class is showing (with the England captain still to come back – congratulations Tom). Most of all the team looks as excited as anyone about what’s to come. And what’s to come is an emotionally charged match as we welcome Dimes back to the AJ Bell for the first time since his departure. Steve gave the club incredible service, and we’ve long said on the pod that he might well be the reason we still have professional rugby in the North West. It will be a good chance to give him the round of applause that circumstances denied him and
