Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for what I have no doubt will be an entertaining fixture under the Friday night lights against last season’s Premiership champions, Harlequins. Quins have a new man at the helm and I want to extend a very warm northern welcome to Tabai Matson, his coaches and his talented team. I’m sure, like me, you watched Quins take on Bristol on Friday night. It was an incredible game and it’s given us plenty to think about going into tonight’s game.

Of course there’s so much attention on Marcus Smith after his performance but we know that we can’t get drawn into focusing on just one player. Quins have threats all over the pitch and we’re going to have to be at our ver y best to come out on top.

Quins know exactly who they are and the t ype of game they want to play so our challenge is about imposing our st yle and our Sale Sharks DNA on the game. We know they thrive in those open, high tempo, chaotic situations, and if we tr y to play them at their own game, we’re probably not going to win, so we’ve worked this week on how to control some of those. Part of my role is to tr y and make the unsex y, sex y, because I think our st yle of rugby can be ever y bit as entertaining as any other. Who doesn’t want to see Manu Tuilagi take it at full pace off the top of a lineout? That’s exciting to me. There’s more than one way to win a game of rugby and we’re ver y comfortable and confident in what we’re tr ying to do. That’s not to say that we can’t improve. We’ve underperformed in the last two weeks and we know we’ve made mistakes, but I really believe we’ve learned from what’s happened. We’ve found the answers together and the players have been really honest. We believe we’re on the right track and I hope we show you that tonight. I want an 80-minute performance and if

we do that then I know the results will take care of themselves. Of course, it helps to have our international players involved and tonight we welcome back our British and Irish Lion Tom Curr y. Tom is a huge part of this side on and off the field and I don’t think there’s a team in the world that wouldn’t miss him. He’s trained for a few weeks now and he’s been chomping at the bit to get back on the field. I know you’ll give him a ver y special welcome home. When we last welcomed Quins to the A J Bell it was a ver y different scenario to the one in which we find ourselves this evening. Both teams were looking ahead to the playoffs and Quins rested a few of their big players. We beat them but to be honest we felt a little empt y because we wanted to take on the ver y best that they had with the ver y best that we had. I suspect today will be ver y different and we can‘t wait to go up against them at their best. It’s a massive chance for us to put things right. Alex.

European Rugby have confirmed Sale Sharks’ Heineken Champions Cup fixtures ahead of the tournament commencing in December. The Sharks’ first outing in Europe this season will be in Swansea versus Ospreys on Sunday 12th December, followed by a visit from ASM Clermont before the close of the year. The French outfit travel to the AJ Bell on Saturday 18th December. The reprise of the historic inaugural final, which will be televised live on BT Sport as well as free-to-air in the UK and Ireland on Channel 4 and Virgin Media, is one of a host of high-quality contests in the pool stage fixture schedules of

the Heineken Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup which have been announced by tournament organisers EPCR. Once again, BT Sport in the UK and Ireland, and beIN SPORTS in France, will broadcast each of the 48 Heineken Champions Cup pool matches live, and this comprehensive coverage will be complemented by free-to-air transmission of key fixtures in each round by Channel 4 and Virgin Media in the UK and Ireland, and by France Télévisions in France.

Four-time tournament winners and last season’s PRO14 champions, Leinster Rugby, will open their campaign with a Round 1 tie in Pool A against Bath Rugby at the Aviva Stadium also on Saturday, 11 December, while Harlequins, who won the 2021 Gallagher Premiership in such spectacular style, will travel to play Castres Olympique on Sunday, 12 December in Pool B. Highlights of the back-toback clashes in Rounds 2 and 3 feature the Pool A matches between Sale Sharks and ASM Clermont Auvergne on Saturday, 18 December and Sunday, 16 January 2022, as well as the

meetings of Stade Francais Paris and Bristol Bears in Pool B on Sunday, 19 December and Saturday, 15 January 2022. Last season’s defeated finalists, Stade Rochelais, will attempt to go one better when they launch their European campaign against Glasgow Warriors in Pool A at Stade Marcel-Deflandre on Sunday, 12 December, and the tournament will get under way on Friday, 10 December when Northampton Saints host Racing 92 at the cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens. The Heineken Champions Cup will be competed for by 24 clubs, including nine previous winners

with as many as 38 European titles between them, in two pools of 12 over four pool stage rounds. The eight highest-ranked clubs from each pool will qualify for the knockout stage which will consist of a Round of 16 on a home and away basis, quarter-finals and semifinals, with the final in Marseille on 28 May 2022. The clubs ranked nine to 11 in each of the pools will qualify for the Round of 16 of the EPCR Challenge Cup. A modified Challenge Cup format will see 15 clubs competing in three pools over five pool stage rounds with Saracens marking their return to European competition with a Round 1 match in Pool C against Edinburgh Rugby at the StoneX Stadium on Saturday, 11 December. The 2012 winners, Biarritz Olympique, are also back in Europe after an absence of seven years and their opening Pool A tie on Saturday, 11 December sees them up against Zebre Rugby Club at Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi while three-time finalists, RC Toulon, start out in Round 2 at Stade Félix Mayol also against Zebre on Friday, 17 December. Clubs will only play against opponents from their own pool, and one club in each pool will have a bye during each round. The exact dates and kick-off times for the

Round 5 fixtures on 8/9/10 April 2022 will be announced later in the season. The three highest-ranked clubs from each pool, and the highestranked fourth-placed club, as well as six Heineken Champions Cup clubs, will qualify for the Round of 16 which will be played on the weekend of 15/16/17 April 2022, followed by quarter-finals and semi-finals, with the final at the Stade Vélodrome, Marseille on 27 May 2022.

There’s a curious strain of optimism going round the Shark Tank at the moment. Despite two less than perfect results in the last two weeks, all the talk on our latest pod was of the numerous positives. Exciting attacking rugby, academy kids looking at home on the Premiership stage, try bonus points (we’d forgotten what those felt like at one stage) and some serious mental resilience to get back from 18 points down with five minutes to go to a chance to win the game. Oh and it was close wasn’t it? Tom Curtis, hold your head up high. The support from the rest of the team

straight after the final whistle is exactly what we want to see and shows what this team is all about. With our list of injuries and international absentees, to play away at a Gloucester side stacked full of internationals and Lions (both British and Golden), be 15 points down twice and get two points out of it, well we won’t go on about it but it’s not a bad result is it? On the other hand we probably will go on, at length this season, about Raffi Quirke. For the sake of leaving enough space in the programme for everyone else, we shouldn’t start it here, but what a talent. The link up with Dan Du Preez for the first try (and on that note, welcome back twins) shows exactly what teams have to fear from us this season – pace, quick ball and high levels of skill.

On that theme, the highlight of this season has to be the performance of our academy graduates. There were 14 in total in the matchday squad for the Gloucester game, and the levels of performances going in from the likes of Kieran Wilkinson, Raffi, Luke James and Sam Dugdale is only made more impressive by the fact that they’ve got another 10 years ahead of them to get better and better.

a tough test this is for Quins. It should be a cracking atmosphere, and the sort of night that will make us appreciate just how good it is to have the Sharks Family back. Enjoy the game!

Speaking of academy graduates performing at Premiership level, today we welcome a certain M. Smith and his Harlequins Globetrotters to the AJ Bell. Those who watched them against Bristol, or have watched them against us in any game for the last 10 years, know that with their pace and skill they can score from anywhere. However, we also have a defence that is probably the best in the league so they won’t get it as easy as they did against Bristol (we hope – if you’re reading this on 80 minutes and they’ve scored 50 we take full responsibility). Add to that it’s Friday Night Lights at the AJ Bell, as winter draws in with a vociferous northern crowd behind Sale – this might be a tough test for Sale facing the league champions, but don’t mistake what

DMP Durham Sharks 00-31 Sale Sharks Women Powerful carries from Sale’s pack ensnared DMP’s backs, creating the space for Lauren Delany to open the scoring with a scything line and carry. Sale’s forwards were dominant in attack, and it didn’t take long for Leah Lyons to burst over the line from an impeccable lineout maul. Catie Benson scored in similar routeone fashion, a trademark pick-andgo seeing the US Eagle crash under the posts for her third try of the season. A lovely miss-pass and some darting feet saw Lisa Neumann float under the posts from her channel out wide, and marked the end of the first half. The second-half proved more of a challenge for the visitor as Sale became encumbered by their penalty count. Leah Lyons poached her brace with

confidence, but in this period Sale’s most impressive work was done in defence. Teleri Wyn Davis put in a quintessential second-row’s performance – quietly getting on with her evening’s work, clearing out rucks with unremitting vigour. With Sale often unable to find the finishing blow, DMP began to look bright in attack and even made some promising line-breaks of their own. But Sharks defence remained disciplined, culminating in a nailbiting try-line defensive effort at the death. The departure from the field of an injured Jodie Ounsley added a bitter note to proceedings tonight, but with a first season win attained and no points conceded, Sharks will hope to sustain this form in fixtures to come. 29

The start of the school year is always a busy one but even more so as we launched the Mission Sharks programme, a project designed to connect with local primary schools in the Salford and Trafford area. Mission Sharks supports our aims of growing the game of rugby in the North West and growing the Sale Sharks audience. Schools on the project will have the support of our excellent coaches in the development of not only their rugby ability but also helping them to grow as an individual too, something very important to the club.

Moorfield Primary School were treated to a visit from local lads, Connor Doherty & Tumy Onasanya where they got stuck in with the year 5’s and 6’s for some very competitive tag rugby with Tumy’s side coming out on top.

That match against Gloucester will become one of those where people say “I was there.” After breakfast, we had a walk around the city towards the Cathedral, which looked glorious in the autumn sunshine, and we saw several Sale Sharks supporters doing the same. Walking round I mean, not looking glorious. We went

through the Cathedral grounds and towards the Pelican Inn, our stop-off on the way to the ground. No beer today for me as we were heading straight back after the game, but I was assured that the

ones sampled were very good. We set off for Kingsholm aka Castle Grim and took our seats in the stand. After 31 minutes we were 15 points down, but Raf shot through the Gloucester defence to score a debut try which was converted by Wilko; the fightback had begun and it really took off towards the end of the match. I’ll be honest, I was worried about the score after Reedy’s try on 49 minutes, was it insurmountable, but our lads never give up, and Gloucester were given a real show of what real Northern Grit looks like. After tries from Dan du Preez (honorary Northerner) and Gus Warr, the clock was dead. All around us, people shouted “Kick it out!” as we’d secured two points, but the lads had other ideas. That last minutes with 00.00 on the clock was terrifying; one more knockdown or intercept from Gloucs and we’d have nothing. From Warr to James S, the ball passed to a galloping Denny resulted in a penalty. The ball was booted to the corner and the Gloucester supporters became very quiet. TT threw in and the maul set off at a thundering pace and TT was in there to score the try. A last second, almost

touchline kick must be the hardest thing to step up to do, and Tom Curtis did so showing no fear. I was very pleased that following the kick, ours and Gloucester’s players went across to commiserate with Tom, which shows they knew the pressure he was under. A gritty fightback and almost robbing our hosts was a tremendous end to a great trip. Following the confirmation of the European Champions Cup fixtures, supporters have been discussing the best routes and methods of transport to get to Clermont Ferrand, for the match on Sunday 16th January, 6.30pm kick-off. As there is no direct route without changes, many are splitting the journey in Paris after flying into Charles de Gaulle Airport. From there you could hire a car and drive, get a train to Lyon then change for Clermont, or head into Paris and get a train onwards. However you choose to do it, if it’s anything like the previous visits then it should be a cracker!
