A warm welcome to this Heineken Champions Cup pool stage match as we anticipate once again elite clubs and top players producing the brilliance and drama which have for long been the trademarks of our truly worldclass tournament. The two fixtures this month will determine the eight clubs in each pool which will qualify for the knockout stage and continue on the road to the Marseille finals weekend, so the stakes are high. We can then look forward to an innovative Round of 16 with home and away legs, followed by traditional quarter-finals and semi-finals which will guarantee a further series of compelling matches culminating in the 2022 showpiece final at the Stade Vélodrome on Saturday, 28 May. In addition, the three clubs ranked ninth to 11th in each pool will have the opportunity to compete for silverware by qualifying for the knockout stage of the EPCR Challenge Cup. We are delighted to be joined on this season’s journey to Marseille by our long-standing title partner, Heineken, as well as by our newest official partner, DHL, who are providing customised logistics solutions for both the Heineken Champions Cup and the EPCR Challenge Cup, and we would also like to thank Tissot, the Financial Times, Gilbert and Kappa for their continuing support. Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for our first home Heineken Champions Cup game of the season. This is the very best club competition in rugby and a crucial game for us if we want to progress to the knockout phase. We’ve got big ambitions in the Champions Cup this season and we can’t wait to take the field in front of you this afternoon. Before I get into all of that though, can I extend a warm Manchester welcome to our visitors from South Wales. Led by head coach Toby Booth, Ospreys have been one of the most successful teams in Wales for a number of years and
in Gareth Anscombe, Adam Beard, Alex Cuthbert and of course, Alun Wyn-Jones, they’ve got some of the very best players from that country in their squad. Their form in the Champions Cup hasn’t been as good as I’m sure Toby and his staff would have wanted and I know they have some injuries to contend with at the moment as well, but we know we’re going to have to be at our best to get the result that we need today.
Today’s game is a must win. Just like every game in the Premiership from here on in. We focus on the process here and not the end result, but we know the pressure on these games is there. We put in a really good performance against Clermont and we feel that we’re due a turn in our results. Senior players are coming back, and I think and believe we’re going to push on. The message this week has been ‘bring it on’ and I know I can rely on plenty of that same attitude from all of you in the stands too. It’s been a big week for the club and everyone at Carrington was delighted to see four of our young players picked for their respective Six Nations squads. Tom Curry, Raffi Quirke, Bevan Rodd and Ewan Ashman have all come through our academy and we hope they’ll show everyone how good they are when the Six Nations gets underway. It’s brilliant for the club and I was cheering when I saw the squads announced. We made sure we celebrated in our team meeting on Wednesday because it’s massive for our academy staff and for every young player in the club. Because of the way Bevan made the squad in the Autumn, I think that selection has given me the most pride. After he played so well against Australia and South Africa, he came back to us with the grit between his teeth. He looked like he had grown in every way so it’s so rewarding to see him picked again. He’s getting better and better and I know that
Eddie shares my pride and delight in the way he has performed. Ewan Ashman takes it all in his stride and acts like he should be there. I love that confidence. He probably won’t forgive me for saying this but I reckon Raffi is still a bit star struck by some of the players he’s playing with but that says a lot about him and how humble he is. We’ve got a special bunch of players here and I have absolutely loved my first year as Director of Rugby. We’ve had plenty of highs and some truly memorable performances, and a few lows along the way too. It’s certainly never a dull day here but I’m still smiling because despite the curveballs that keep coming, I believe we’re building something truly special. I hope you feel that too because you, our Sharks Family, have a big role to play in everything we achieve. Enjoy the game.

A quartet of Sharks academy graduates were celebrating international callups this week as Raffi Quirke, Bevan Rodd and Tom Curry were named in Eddie Jones’ England squad for the Six Nations and hooker Ewan Ashman was picked by Scotland coach Gregor Townsend. But if Sharks DoR Alex Sanderson’s predictions are correct, it might not be too long until another young Shark is spotted in international waters.
In his pre-match briefing ahead of the Clermont game, Alex was asked if any other members of his squad could be pushing for a call-up. His answer? Tom Roebuck. But the 21-year-old winger, who made his debut for the club last season, isn’t letting the praise go to his head. Instead, he wants his electric try against Clermont to be just the start. He said: “It’s massive for us to have a coach like Alex. Last year he told us that we would all get an opportunity, he said ‘I back you’, and told us that he didn’t see us as academy kids any more. “This year, he said he didn’t want to rotate as much but he’s still giving us chances, so it shows the confidence he has in the younger players to go out and do a job. “I think the fans can really connect with us. We’re just young lads who have grown up in the area and always dreamed of playing for Sale.”
IT’S ALL ABOUT WORKING AND PUSHING AS HARD AS I CAN. CAN I BE ONE OF SALE’S STARTING WINGERS? THAT’S MY FOCUS. Tom has scored tries for Sale before, but only in the Premiership Rugby Cup. His try against Clermont in the Stade MarcelMichelin was his first for the club in either the Premiership or the Champions Cup. He said: “We talk about lightning bolts, but it’s normally referring to something that the other team does. It’s something out of the blue and off the cuff that happens when we’re on top. But this was a lightning bolt the other way because it came from their lineout. “We were ready to defend the lineout and then in a split-second Rob (du Preez) had the ball and I was screaming at him to kick it. Then it was all about getting my 19
head down and trying to fly as fast as I could. “Everyone says it looked quick but I was just focused on getting to the ball and hoping for a good bounce. It didn’t hit me until I got up that I’d scored in the Champions Cup. It’s about time! “It’s something I’ll really remember. Before the game the coaches were telling us that it would be a game we would remember so personally it’s huge. But I can’t get carried away with one try. I have to back it up and produce that kind of thing week in, week out. “At the start of the season I remember writing down my objectives and becoming a first team player was the main one. Not just to be someone who comes in when there are injuries, but to be a first choice winger who’s picked on merit.

I know it’s not gone as well as we would have hoped so far but we’re due a good run because we are playing well, and just not getting the results we maybe deserve. We’ve got lots of home games coming up and we know that with the players we have, we can beat anyone in front of our fans.”

If exceptional tries are what you like, you can always count on ASM Clermont Auvergne wing, Damian Penaud, to deliver. Fans witnessed some great scores in Round 1 of the Heineken Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup including Penaud’s spectacular effort against Ulster Rugby. “Great break from JJ Hanrahan to expose the opposition front row and beat him one-on-one, followed by a perfectly-timed pass to Penaud, who has the kick accuracy, speed and a worldclass finish to score a superb try,” was how BT Sport’s Sam Waburton described the score. Warburton’s verdict, combined with the public’s votes, determined the winner, and although Penaud fully deserved the accolade, it was a close call between his effort and Anthony Jelonch’s memorable try for Stade Toulousain against Cardiff Rugby.

It’s great to be back for a first (and hopefully not last) Champions Cup game at the AJ Bell this season! It’s been a strange tournament for the last couple of years with a revised format – any tournament where we can lose both games we play and make the knockout stages can’t be right, although you won’t hear us complaining. Luckily this season’s version has seen us be more successful, with a win away against today’s opponents Ospreys marking our first away win in the top tier of European competition for far too long.
Sadly, it was not to be against Clermont in France last week – some very strong performances from a number of players couldn’t quite get us over the line, although a second scoreless second half in a row is something of a worrying trend which we’ll hopefully see put right today. There were plenty of outstanding contributions especially from our academy graduates including Bevan Rodd, Ewan Ashman, Tom Curry and Luke James. A losing bonus point from that game still puts us in a strong position in the competition and leaves our fate firmly in our own hands to get into the knockout stages and maybe even a home draw. Today is also a good chance to build some momentum ahead of
our return to domestic action next week at home to league leaders and current employers of our future fly half, Leicester Tigers. Defeat at Bristol in our second game of 2022 was not the result any of us wanted to see and while we looked good in patches it wasn’t enough to overcome a resurgent Bristol in front of a capacity crowd at Ashton Gate on a Friday night.
With Sale winning all their home games but one this year we’re hopeful the Sharks can keep up the form and deliver not just the result but a performance to match the first half in Clermont. Regardless of how many points we get in either half, lets keep the volume up all game. Enjoy the game and we’ll see you on this week’s pod to hopefully debrief a win and our continuing European adventures.
That brings us nicely on to the news revealed in the club’s financial results that we are hoping to complete our purchase of the AJ Bell in the first quarter of 2022, which would be a fantastic step to improving the matchday experience and bringing more and more fans down to the stadium. Hopefully that purchase will be the first step towards a full AJ Bell rocking week in, week out.

Project Rugby is run by Premiership Rugby in collaboration with England Rugby designed to increase participation in the game by people from traditionally underrepresented groups. It has the ultimate aim of providing regular opportunities to be involved in Rugby Union to a more diverse range of people, specifically those from LSEG groups and ethnically diverse communities aged 14+ and Disability groups aged 16+. Young people from different organisations and groups across the North West in areas such as Trafford, Bolton and Bury are first engaged in rugby union, retained
in the game with more specialised Rugby sessions followed by transition events at their local rugby club. Over the last 6 weeks, Sharks Community Trust has engaged with over 300 young people with over 60 now regularly attending rugby sessions before taking the leap to their local rugby club. Looking forward we are teaming up with Bury RUFC to deliver Project Rugby and with IMAS to create mixed ability rugby teams across the North West.

Sharklinks: Conor McGrath - played for Bolton from u7 to u17 before signing for Sale. Gareth Stocks - Arrived from Marlow, Buckinghamshire when his family relocated ‘Oop North’. As a
youngster, he was hidden in the 3rd team for several weeks until selection committee heard about him! Played 1st team for 3 seasons, then signed for Sale over the summer. Quickly made Sharks 1st team, playing at Centre and Fly Half against the likes of Will Carling & Jeremy Guscott. He got 2 caps for Emerging England. As the game was turning professional, he quit rugby to concentrate on the family business.
Unsung Heroes: Like many rugby clubs across the UK Bolton run a thriving Junior section built on the hard work and dedication of a company of volunteers. These are our “unsung heroes”. Every Sunday morning at Avenue Street around 230 juniors are coached to develop their rugby skills. Bolton run 12 teams from under 6’s right up to Senior Colts. More than half of the First XV are home grown which is a testament to our unsung heroes. Their work isn’t confined to on-field activities…bacon butty chefs provide food aplenty alongside our club merchandise sellers, groundsmen etc. Bolton are no different to any other club…it’s the unsung heroes that give our Juniors the opportunity to become heroes themselves.
Favourite Sharks Moment: 16th April 2011 the day Sale Sharks came to Bolton and played a Premiership game at the Reebok against London Irish. The Bolton News reported “The game saw the home ground of Bolton Wanderers become the 30th ground to host a Premiership Rugby game and a crowd in excess of 16,000 were not left disappointed.” 47
Sale players held coaching sessions with our Juniors as part of the buildup and several Bolton juniors were ball boys / girls at the big game.
Bolton’s Big News: This year the club are celebrating their 150th anniversary. They played their first ever game against Southport Rugby Club in 1872. Fittingly the two clubs are due to meet in the league this month and the fixture is set to kick off a series of commemorative, fundraising events throughout the year. One of the highlights will be the visit to Bolton of around 70 young Italian people from Briganti Rugby Club in Sicily. Bolton reached out to Briganti after reading an article in The Times covering the burning of their Clubhouse and Team bus by local drug gangs (mafioso) after the club set up an after school club to take kids off the dangerous streets of Librino outside Catania.
The Bolton Chairman takes up the story… “Everyone who has ever played or watched rugby will know that we have each other’s backs both on and off the pitch, so when we spotted the article our instinct was to ask how can we help?” “What followed is the building of a remarkable relationship between the two clubs. Fundraising for the visit in August is ongoing and we have plans to send teams from our club to play over in Sicily where there is a thriving rugby scene. The future for both clubs looks very bright” “We are looking to raise £20,000 to make sure that the Briganti youngsters remember their visit to the North West of England for the rest of their lives.
