Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for our first home game in this season’s Premiership Rugby Cup. Obviously as defending champions, we know there’s a bit of extra pressure on us, but this year is a new competition and we’d love to win it again – this time in front of you. But before I talk about tonight’s game, I’d like to extend a very warm Manchester welcome to our northern neighbours, Newcastle Falcons. Dean Richards is building a great squad of players, backed up by some fantastic coaches, and we know they’ll be well prepared for the challenge. It’s difficult to know exactly what kind of team we’ll be facing but we’re ready to face

them at full strength. Whatever team they put out tonight will be full of quality so we’ll have to be at our best to match them. Last time out in this competition we came up short against Leicester Tigers, but there were plenty of good things to take from the game. We gave opportunities to young players who we have really high hopes for and I thought they acquitted themselves

well against a really good Tigers team. Now the challenge for them is to go again and prove to me and the rest of the coaching staff that they deserve to be part of the squad for Premiership games.

Tonight, you’ll get your first opportunity to see lads like Elliot Gourlay, Jack Metcalf, Joe Bedlow, Ewan Murphy and Ben Carlile. I’ve said many times that these young players have impressed me so much since I joined the club and I’m excited to be able to give them the chance to show you what they can do. Some of them have been out on loan and I’d like to thank the coaches and staff at Sale FC in particular for giving our players a fantastic education.

These players deserve their chance and I have no doubt they’ll rise to the occasion. They need my backing and they’ve got it. Speaking of rising to the occasion, the same could be said of our international players who have done us proud in the Autumn Internationals so far. Everyone at the club was so happy to see Raffi and Bevan make their first England appearances last weekend, joining Tom and Manu in the matchday squad for the game against Australia. And I was thrilled for Ewan Ashman too, after he made his Scotland debut, and scored a brilliant try. These are young players with

Sale Sharks are delighted to announce that England fly-half George Ford has signed a longterm contract to join the club ahead of the 2022/23 Gallagher Premiership season. Oldham-born Ford, who has won 77 caps for his country, put pen to paper this morning on a three-year deal which will see him join Alex Sanderson’s squad in July 2022.

SH rK In THE SPOTLIGhT R R A GU S W When Sharks scrum half Gus Warr met with Alex Sanderson ahead of the current Premiership season, the pair agreed that the best thing for the 22 year old’s development would be for him to spend the campaign on loan at Championship side Doncaster. Little did they know that after injuries to Faf de Klerk and Will Cliff, plus an England call-up for fellow academy graduate

Raffi Quirke, Gus would soon be playing a key role in the club’s push for domestic honours. “The plan was to be at Doncaster all year,” Gus said, ahead of a fifth successive first team start. “I was going to go there and get more experience but it didn’t quite work out like that. I got called back to cover Raffi when he got injured in the first game of the season but then Cliffy picked up an injury too, and I got my chance to start. “I’ve loved it, especially because I wasn’t expecting to get these opportunities. It’s been a huge step up for my in terms of physicality but the boys around me have supported me in everything I’ve done. “We’ve had real clarity in what we’re trying to do and that’s allowed me to focus on my game, and making the step up to Premiership rugby.” Now, after establishing himself

in Alex’s plans, Gus is targeting the very top – and he’s using the experiences of two fellow Sharks Academy stars as motivation. “My focus is very much on Sharks and playing well enough to keep my place,” he said. “Alex has said that he believes in the younger players and he’s shown that he’s willing to trust us in the big games. That’s massive for us all. “But I’m just like any other player – I’d love to play international rugby. I used to live with both Raffi and Bevan Rodd and seeing them play for England has given all of us a huge lift and it’s proved that you don’t need to play for ten years in the Premiership to get a chance with England. “I remember speaking to AJ (MacGinty) a couple of years ago when I was getting frustrated with my game, and he asked me what my ambitions were. I told him I’d love to play for Sale Sharks and play international rugby and he told me to put all my energy and all of my focus into that. “So that’s what I’ve done. I’ve worked so hard and spent so much time on my skills – my box 17

kicks, my passing, and my goal kicking too. “Watching what Bevan and Raffi are doing has given the younger lads a massive lift. It’s been amazing watching Ewan Ashman too. When he made his Scotland debut, we were all on a team social together. We watched it and the place went mad when he scored his try. “The team spirit that we have is incredible and it was there for everyone to see.”

“Our expectation is to win every game,” he added. “We didn’t put in an 80 minute performance against Leicester so that’s our focus tonight. “Playing in patches isn’t good enough so this week we’ve been working on doing what we do best and making sure we keep it up for the whole game. “Last year was great but this year is a new competition and we want to win it.”

Sharks won the Premiership Cup last year but Gus says that hasn’t out any extra pressure on the team going into this year’s competition.

The Northern Derby is back! Anyone who has ever made the journey between Sale and Newcastle (and welcome to those dedicated Falcons fans here tonight) knows that ‘Derby’ is something of a tenuous term – only the London based media could come up with that one, but nevertheless it’s always a pleasure to have the Falcons in town and we’re looking forward to what will hopefully be our first Premiership Rugby Cup win since a quiet night in September 2020. It was a disappointing result against Leicester Tigers last week, but with a performance full of positives includes two tries and an assist for Sam Dugdale,

so Sale come away with the positives of a good attacking performance away from home (and the opposition fly half’s phone number?). Since we last wrote we’ve also seen a dominant performance against Northampton which was a good way to bow out of the last Premiership cycle. There were superb performances all over the pitch, not least from AJ (more on that later), with forwards dominant and backs clinical. Getting back to winning ways is no easy feat with the quality in this league, and with a few big players to come back the future continues to look bright. Great too to see the camaraderie in the squad with Ben Curry giving Akker the walk-in try to end all

walk in trys, and congratulations to Nye Thomas on debut for doing the true scrum half work and squaring up to the opposition pack immediately after coming on. On the international stage, a huge congratulations to Bevan Rodd and Raffi Quirke on well deserved England debuts, and to Manu Tuilagi and Tom Curry on huge performances against Australia. Bevan looked right at home at international level, and we’re looking forward to seeing all four lads go again against South Africa. We might finally stop complaining we don’t get enough international representation at this rate, although we wouldn’t hold your breath – we’ll keep telling Eddie about Ben Curry as long as anyone will listen. And finally, a quick word on our great American playmaker, who will sadly be leaving us at the end of this season. We are truly gutted to see AJ go, not just because he is one of our finest players but also because he is so well loved throughout the club. He goes with our best wishes, and the best of luck. Hopefully the outpouring of grief (and that’s not even hyperbolic, look

at Twitter) is evidence enough of how much the club and most importantly us fans appreciate everything you’ve done for us AJ. On that note, let’s make sure tonight and every other game this season is a great atmosphere for all the players. Come on you Sharks!

The Premiership Rugby Cup has traditionally provided clubs with an opportunity to blood academy players and give them a taste of first team action. This year is no different . Against Leicester Tigers last weekend Sharks fans got a first glimpse of Ewan Murphy and Jack Metcalf and tonight , Scotland U20 international back Elliot Gourlay will get his first taste of the A J Bell Stadium. Fellow academy graduates Rouban Birch and

Nye Thomas have also featured for the first time in recent weeks so we thought it was time to find out a little more about some of the club’s brightest young stars. And who bet ter to speak to than Shark s’ Academy Transition Coach Neil Briggs...

Rouban has worked so hard this season and he’s really developed his game while he’s been out on loan at Coventry and then Sale FC. Sale FC give our young players such a good grounding and education in the game and now we feel like he’s ready to make the step up. He’s a second row who can play number six as well and he’s dynamic, powerful and really quick around the pitch. He’s the sort of player the fans will really take to.

Rouban Birch Elliot is in his second season with us but he didn’t really get any opportunities in his first year because of lockdown and the impact that had on competitions other than the Premiership.

He’s seriously talented and very versatile but he’s probably most effective on the wing or at full-back. He’s pretty much made the 15 shirt his own while he’s been on loan at Caldy Rugby Club in National League 1 and that’s helped him to develop his game to the point where we feel he’s ready to step up to our first team. 31

Jack is another talented back who came to us during lockdown from Yorkshire Carnegie. He’s primarily a centre or full-back but he can play on the wing as well. He’s so versatile and that makes him really handy to have around the squad. This season he’s been splitting his game time between Coventry and Sale FC to make sure he’s up to speed.

f l a c t e M k c Ja Ewan plays in the second row and is currently studying at Durham University. We’re supporting him on the rugby side meaning that he comes back to us to train during holidays from uni. Ewan is one of the first players that we’ve done this with but he won’t be the last. As a club it’s so much more than just what the lads do on the field. We know that they need an education alongside their rugby. Ewan is a great example of that.

Nye has appeared a couple of times for the first team already but he might not be familiar to too many of the fans. He’s in his first year with us after coming up from the academy and he’s one that Alex has already spoken about in really glowing terms. He’s in a very similar mould to Faf or Raffi – he’s quick around the field and explosive. He’s been playing at Caldy Rugby Club in National League 1 as well and that’s prepared him really well for professional rugby.

We caught up with Director of Rugby, Andrew Bird to find out a little bit more about ‘The Bach’. Founded: 1936 Ground: Bradwall Road League: 1st XV play in National Midlands (National 3)

Sharklinks:

There’s been a number of players in the modern era that have been developed in the Mini and Junior section at ‘The Bach’ and have gone on to represent the Sharks. In the early 2000’s there were the likes of Tom Holmes and James

Gaskell who broke into the Sharks Senior squad. Ewan Ashman, also a product of the Bach’s mini and juniors, made his mark on the club in his debut season and has gone on to have a weekend he’ll never forget by scoring the winning try on debut against Australia! However, the most famous Shark to have been made in the Bach is Will Cliff, a man who has gone on to represent the club over 200 times. Cliffy has been an

ever present in the Sharks senior squads since breaking into the team in 2007 and is regularly back at the club coaching the youngsters or having a beer with the senior squad.

Unsung Hero:

We’re really fortunate to have so many volunteers at the club, we worked out that roughly 35,000 hours of volunteering is completed across the club whether that be coaching, organising events, running events etc – as I said, very fortunate! If I was to highlight a few people then there’s Rob Davenport our M&J Chairman who puts in a huge amount of time working with the coaches right from the Under 6’s through to the Senior Colts. Then there’s the likes of Lisa Hill who has the thankless task of overseeing all our safeguarding at the club and David Burnand who drives our brand, marketing and social media which has made a huge difference.

personal note, I have spent a lot of time coaching within the academy, so best memories are Monday nights at Carrington, Wellington Festivals with the likes of Quirke, Curtis & Roebuck and coaches chats with Noel, Spraggy et.al.

Club Goals:

The biggest aim and something we take a lot of pride in is being the cornerstone of the community, making sure everyone feels welcome to the club. So by that we want everyone who comes into interaction with the club has a positive experience, whether that be player development, spectators who come to watch, social members who like a drink in the bar or we’ll go as far as the opposition, we want them to get a sense of the community culture at the club.

Favourite Sharks Moment:

There’s been many a trip to watch Sale Sharks with the club, both Home & Away. One that sticks in the memory is our trip to watch Sharks take on Bath in 2017 where we had coaches at the time Rob Webber and Byron McGuigan playing and Cliffy even crossed for a try – that was a special day for all that came from the club. Sale Sharks marked Remembrance Day by welcoming more than 100 military veterans to the AJ Bell Stadium for the Premiership clash with Northampton Saints thanks to official club partner Printerland. The veterans, who are all part of the Sharks Community Trust ‘Sharks Forces’ programme, enjoyed complementary grandstand seats in the Printerland Stand as the Sharks overcame the visitors 30-6.

Sharks Forces is a unique programme developed by the Community Trust to help military veterans in the North West transition from life in the armed forces to civilian life.

And then they joined the Trust’s Mental Wellbeing Coordinator Eddie Owen on the pitch to capture the special occasion with a picture in front of the posts and the Sharks faithful in the AO Stand.

Since it launched in 2018, the programme has worked with over 400 veterans across the region to help them develop the skills needed to improve their mental wellbeing and find a career outside the forces. The programme, which is supported by the Armed Forces Covenant and the Veterans Foundation, includes coffee

mornings, welfare walks, art therapy workshops, physical activity sessions and online webinars to build confidence. Eddie said: “We’re incredibly proud of Sharks Forces and all the work that our coaches do with veterans in the region. But so much of our work wouldn’t be possible without the support of the club and partners such as Printerland. “Printerland support much of our work in mental health and inclusion and with their support, we’re able to take rugby to different audiences across the region. “Remembrance Day is a big day for veterans as they remember friends and loved ones who they have

lost. It was an absolute honour to welcome them to the AJ Bell Stadium and, thanks to the Sharks supporters, it was a day they’ll never forget.” Altrincham-based Printerland have been a long-standing partner of Sale Sharks having first agreed a deal back in 2004 to sponsor the Cheadle End of the club’s former home ground at Edgeley Park, before becoming official Family Stand sponsors at the AJ Bell Stadium in 2016.
