Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for our penultimate home fixture of the Premiership season.

Our visitors today are our northern neighbours Newcastle Falcons so on behalf of everyone at Sale Sharks, can I extend a unique Manchester welcome to Dean Richards and his team. The return fixture against Newcastle was cancelled earlier in the season so we haven’t had chance to test ourselves against them, but we know what kind of challenge they are going to pose. As always, we know we’ll have to be at our best to get the result we need to stay in the fight.

As a coaching group we went on a trip to Barcelona last week. The plan was to do a bit of bonding and try and get away from rugby, but the

The European tie in Paris stands out a mile, but we haven’t thrown the towel in in the Premiership either.

We’re still right in the fight and while we know we haven’t got an easy run-in, starting tonight against Newcastle, we know we can only control what we can control. So we’re focusing in on winning our next three games and see how the chips fall.

The boys have fought hard to give themselves a chance in the Premiership. They’re ready and we’ll see what we can do.

We know we need to maintain form and momentum but it might be a busy period for the lads so we’ve had to make some hard selection calls to make sure we get the balance right.

Tom Curry is back this week and that’s massive for us. You need your best players fit and firing at this time of the season and he’s one of the very best.

He’s had some bad luck with injuries but he’s excited to be back, as is his brother Ben too after a bicep injury.

Both of them are so important to us and we’ve missed them.

We announced in the week that we’ve signed 11 lads onto senior academy contracts. It’s the club’s biggest ever academy intake and shows where

we’re going as a club. I had a conversation this week with Neil Briggs and our Academy Manager Fergus Mulchrone about how we manage their development and their pathways because we know there’s some real talent among the group, including quite a few from my old school, Kirkham Grammar.

These lads have missed out on two years of their development and for the most part they might take a bit more time than your average crop.

The step up to professional rugby is massive and we’re very aware of the support we’ll have to give them. There’s no expectation for them to come in next year and hit the ground running, but we’d love to get them some rugby with Sale FC, Doncaster or Caldy, who won promotion to the Championship last week.

It’s massive for Caldy and for north west rugby so from everyone at Sale Sharks, massive congratulations to everyone at Caldy.

Like I said, it’s such an exciting stage of the season and we need as much support as possible.

There’s everything to play for and it starts tonight.

Sharks’ CEO, Sid Sutton, has had an eventful first 18 months at the helm. He’s navigated everything from the challenges of the pandemic and playing games behind closed doors, to juggling the reduced salary cap and negotiating the potential purchase of the AJ Bell Stadium.

In the first of Sid’s monthly updates, he gives you, the Sharks Family, an insight into what goes on inside the boardroom, lifts the lid on the ongoing bid to buy the stadium, explains how he has navigated the salary cap restrictions whilst still giving Alex the best squad possible,

and talks about why he loves the job despite the odd sleepless night.

“It’s certainly been an eventful 18 months. There’s never a dull day at Sale Sharks but despite the challenges, doing this job is a huge honour.

“One of the biggest challenges this season, and probably the most difficult part of the job, has been juggling the salary cap. We have to do what’s right for the club and its long-term vision and future. We want to develop young, northern talent.

This is core to our philosophy and has become even more important given the salary cap reduction in place across the league for next season.

“It’s a huge jigsaw puzzle we’ve had to navigate. Admittedly, it has given me a few sleepless nights but I believe medium to long term it becomes easier for us because we have a very clear focus on the development of the young lads in the academy. We want our young talent to stay at the club.

IT’S CERTAINLY BEEN AN EVENTFUL 18 MONTHS. THERE’S NEVER A DULL DAY AT SALE SHARKS BUT DESPITE THE CHALLENGES, DOING THIS JOB IS A HUGE HONOUR. tough conversations, but this is a huge, exciting opportunity for us to build a team and club filled with the very best northern talent.

“As we exit the two year lockdown period, it’s also been evident that some players have been homesick and understandably they’ve missed their families. They want to move back to their roots and that’s had an impact for us in terms of players leaving, but also players like George Ford coming in.

“It’s what we’re all about and it’s the identity that Alex and I both want.

We truly want to be the fabric of the north. Naturally, we want to sprinkle some stardust with the very best foreign talent and lads from different parts of the UK but the core of this club has to be the local lads in our academy.

“We have had some difficult moments when we’ve had to release players because we can’t fit them in the cap. These lads are really good people and we’ve had some really

sure we’re giving young players in the region the best possible opportunity.

“The other huge challenge in the last 12 months has been the future of our stadium. Buying the stadium is still crucial to the future of our club.

Salford Red Devils have now agreed terms, in principle, to move to Moor Lane. Both ourselves and Salford City FC have always said that nothing would go ahead until they had been offered every opportunity to find a new home.

“We’ve extended our termination date for ending the lease on the stadium until August, that’s our deadline. This aligns with Salford City

FC’s vision given it takes around 12 months to plan for next season. It’s all going in the right direction but it’s a deal with a lot of parties involved and we have to get it right.

“In terms of the stadium name, we had a nine year deal with AJ Bell. It’s been a fantastic partnership however we have to be aware of the value of our brand. The deal with AJ Bell was a deal with the stadium rather than with Sale Sharks. Whilst they have been a fantastic partner, the time has come to go in a different direction and for us to explore other options. We came to a mutual agreement.

“We absolutely believe that the club is now in a position to challenge for

the top four every season. With the acquisition of the stadium with Salford City FC, we want to go out to the open market to find a partner for the stadium. It’s much more than just a chequebook moment.

“This season has been unpredictable at times and I’ve experienced the highs and lows just like you. The club is going in the right direction, on and off the field. We had our best ever attendance at the stadium for the Leicester game, this whilst on ITV, which shows our potential and what this club can do. Commercially, we’ve also evolved - through changing our culture and bringing in some market leading people.

“We’ve got a massive Champions Cup quarter final to look forward to against Racing 92, and the team is only going to get better. We’ve

Front row lynchpin, dressing room comedian, entrepreneur and donut expert, Nick Schonert has plenty of strings to his bow. The 30-year-old has become a fixture in Alex Sanderson’s team since he signed on at the AJ Bell Stadium. And ‘Sharky’ says he has no doubt he made the right move.

“It’s been quite an eye-opener,” he said. “And I mean that in a positive way.

The club has a fantastic backbone of people off the field just as much as on the field. There are lots of really, really good people here and from day one, everyone was so welcoming. That’s made the transition for my partner and I very easy.

“On the field it’s been amazing to play with guys like Manu and the du Preez twins. When Alex and I talked this time last year, he asked me why I wanted to come to Sale. I said that for the first time, I wanted to make a selfish decision. I wanted to play for the team of my choice and surround myself with the very best players.

“They’ve all been better than I thought though. Guys like Jean-Luc and Dan are unreal. If I had half their highlight reels I’d hang up my boots tomorrow.

“We’ve got some brilliant players in the front row.

I think you have to be a little bit weird to play in the front row. We’ve got guys like Ross, Coenie, Akker, we’re all pretty big characters. I think the older you get as a front

From the outside it might seem like your Sharks have had an inconsistent, up and down season, but Sharky sees things a little differently. For the former Worcester man, it’s all about building momentum.

“Externally it might seem like we’re not where we want to be,” he said. “But I think it’s been a great season. I was speaking to Bevan Rodd the other day about this. I feel like we’re really building something special and I feel like this season has been about laying foundations and understanding the ship that we’re all on.

“Alex has created a brilliant environment and he deserves massive credit for that.

Players want to come here now and we’ve seen that with some of the lads coming next season. They’re big players and they want to be part of what we’re building.

“Normally at this stage of the season players are looking forward to a break.

Not here. We’ve got plenty to play for still this season and the boys are buzzing about the challenges ahead.”

Visitors to the AJ Bell will have spotted Nick’s Guilt Trip Coffee vans outside the stadium at recent home games.

And the man behind the business has even donned the apron and mucked in himself when he’s missed games through injury.

“About two years ago I thought I needed to find something outside of rugby and this has been brilliant,” he added. ”I love coffee and I’m a big lad at heart so donuts and coffee was perfect.

It’s great to have a distraction from rugby. When you’ve played the game for as long as I have it can be all consuming – it can engulf you.

“I call a cup of coffee a ‘cup of enthusiasm’ – trust me, you need it when you’re heading out for your second defence session of the day.”

Even a week off isn’t enough to recover from that second leg at Ashton Gate.

After a veritable slugfest at the AJ Bell the week before, even our most optimistic hopes were struggling to break through a grim reality, that if you can’t beat Bristol at home then you really don’t have much chance away on a Friday night in front of a packed crowd. That chance probably also severely lessens when you get a yellow card in the first 10 minutes and a red card 30 minutes in. So it was that despite a promising start, we were all back to being resigned to our fate when Reedy was sent off.

Except, you forget, this is Sale Sharks. All that training for playing with 14 men last season has finally come to fruition – and they said we were mad! If anything, we looked better. The power and dynamism that had been so missing the week before at home came to the fore, with the forwards, especially the magnificent Jean-Luc, running over Bristol like they weren’t there. And a word for Rob at 10, in one of his best performances for us, commanding the team around the field and kicking virtually everything.

But the most pleasing thing which we can take into the season runin was the mentality. As much as it was going well, Bristol, as they do, came back into it – taking

advantage of Sale being down to 13 and exploiting a tiring defence.

With the crowd whipped up and on their side, momentum was firmly with the Bears. And in a knockout tie, away, Friday night, under the lights, to wrestle that momentum back, win and knock over the penalties to get us clear again and then score a wonder try (that should have been a penalty try but let’s not go into it) to see out the game – well, it’s sensational. We just can’t stop talking about it.

Unfortunately, we do have to, but fortunately it’s for more rugby and it’s our own taste of Friday night lights this time as we welcome fellow Northerners Newcastle Falcons to the AJ Bell. (We know that Falcons fans will baulk at the use of the term Northerners for Mancunians, and we’re not sorry). It’s never nice beating Falcons, as they have a soft spot in the Shark Tank podcast’s three hearts – but it’s something we just have to do as we continue to push for Champions Cup qualification for next year. (I mean, we’re going to win it anyway so it doesn’t matter does it!)

Finally, a quick word on our

departing Springbok and, we’re confident in saying, Sale Sharks club legend - Faf De Klerk. It has been a privilege to watch him, and we are gutted to see him go, but just a massive thank you from us for everything he has done in taking this club to levels we wouldn’t have got to without him.

With only a handful of chances left to see him tear it up for Sale – let’s enjoy it and give him the send off he so richly deserves.

Sale Sharks Community Trust HITZ Learner Becomes a Role Model in His Own Community Sale West HITZ learner, Jayden Thompson, has landed an apprenticeship with Argyle, the company that is carrying out the groundworks on his own estate.

Jayden had left school in Year 9 aged 14 and finished school with no GCSEs and no career pathway established. Alongside the disappointment of failing to gain qualifications, Jayden was isolated throughout his social circle and spent a lot of time at home, leading to some mental health challenges.

Jayden was accepted onto the apprenticeship with Argyle – which includes an NVQ Level 2 in Groundworks – after successfully taking part in the

Sale Sharks Community Trust HITZ programme where he was supported to achieve his GCSE Maths and English as well as his Level 2 Employment and Skills qualification.

He said that getting on the course was the turning point in his life.

“The HITZ tutors believed in me and showed me there’s something worth working for.

They helped me to learn new skills, stay out of trouble and aim for something. I want to stay and see my apprenticeship through to the end. My mum is proud of me and I want to be a good role model to my younger sisters. I want to show that you can do anything if you put your mind to it and have self belief.”

Vanessa Barlow, the Argyle apprenticeship manager, said, “The work on Sale West is about much more than simply building houses or replacing roofs and kitchens. It is about creating a place where there’s opportunities for people to achieve their potential, and a community which everyone feels proud to be part of.

Jayden, who lives on the Sale West estate, said, “Growing up on the estate it’s good to see the positive changes taking place – I’m happy to be part of it. In years to come, I’ll walk down the street and think that I helped do this.”
