Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for a game under the Friday night lights against a fantastic London Irish side led by a man who has seen it all in Declan Kidney. On behalf of everyone at Sale Sharks, can I welcome Declan, Les Kiss and their players and staff to Manchester. I’m not sure I can guarantee the weather after the last couple of weeks, but I can promise a warm welcome off the pitch. On the field, we know we’re going to have to be at our very best to win tonight. The return fixture earlier in the season was a game we should have won, but then could easily have lost in the end. We were a bonus point up on them at half time and ended up drawing the game after a really frustrating second half.
The stats show that this London Irish team scores more points in the final quarter than any other team in the Premiership so we know we need an 80 minute performance tonight. They were 14 points down again Exeter and came back, and they were behind against Saracens and came back. This team aren’t lucky – they’re where they deserve to because they make their own luck and they
attack the second half of games better than any other team. So we know how dangerous they can be, but I feel like we’re hitting form just at the right time too. A glance at the league table tells you that we’re right back in the fight for a top four spot. Last week against Northampton was actually probably a dip in terms of the levels we’ve been at in the last month. It’s hard to put my finger on what’s changed. We’ve been working hard on so many things and as we know, this is a game of small margins. You only have to be a little bit below par to lose games in this league because it’s so tight, but little improvements across the board make a big difference on a weekend. We’ve had consistency of selection and being able to pick from the same squad for a few weeks has been a massive factor in the improvement. Team meetings have been shorter and sharper, and we’ve decreased the volume of training but increased intensity. Any changes have been led by the boys and we’ve had lots of honest chats around the areas we wanted to get better and stronger in. But there’s no complacency here because there’s still so much work to do. We’re nowhere near the end of the season and we know that if allow ourselves to smell the roses this early on, that’s when the intensity could drop. We don’t want to
just maintain this form – we want to keep on pushing and improving. To stay at the very top you need to keep reinventing yourself. Like mowing the grass, it’s a constant process. To keep improving, sometimes you need fresh faces, and this week we welcomed two new signings in Alex Groves and Dom Barrow. Alex Groves is an EQP, he’s young, he’s tall and he’s very highly regarded by everyone in the England u20 setup. We met up with him and his dad and they loved the city, loved what we were all about and we hope he’ll be a shark for life. Dom Barrow lost his way a little and lost his love for the game, but he came to us wanting to get back into rugby and honestly, I feel like we’ve won the lottery. Good second rows are so hard to find and this guy has played at the very top level. He’s had some time away, but now he’s come back and he knows what he wants. We really believe he can make a massive impact straight away. I hope you can see that this club is really going somewhere. I’m so passionate about it because I really feel we’re building something special. Players can see that and they want to be a part of it. I know you’ll play your part too. Alex.

The last few weeks have seen plenty of celebration in the three Du Preez households, as Dan and wife Rebecca welcomed their first child, baby Judah into the world (massive congratulations Dan). There’s been plenty to celebrate on the field too since the turn of the year, as a resurgent Sharks side has won five on the spin. And key to that winning run has been the eldest of Sharks’ Du Preez brothers. Rob is a fly-half at heart, but a switch to the 13 shirt has seen him cement a place in Alex’s team – and now he’s targeting a strong end to the campaign and a top four finish.
He said: “It’s been an up and down season for me. I started the first game, then I got injured and I carried that injury and made it worse. The switch to 13 wasn’t a deliberate thing on my part. I just think Alex wanted to have another ball-player outside AJ. I’ve got Rohan (Janse van Rensburg) inside me offering a bit more power – he can do the hard grunt and then we’ve got another playmaker. “I know I’ve still got plenty to work on but I’m loving playing with Rohan, outside AJ, and the team is winning. That’s always the most important thing.” That team ethic and the togetherness in the squad has been key to Sharks’ resurgence since December. Ahead of today’s game Sale sit in seventh position, just four points off the coveted top four. Rob said: “Before I came to Sale I had never played anywhere except at fly half. I still maintain that I am a flyhalf but I’ll play wherever I’m picked and wherever the coaches feel I can best help the team. “The team comes first and that’s how it always has to be - it’s why

It’s how everyone at the club feels and I think you can see that on the pitch. We all work for each other and support each other. “I like to be vocal on the pitch. I think being a fly-half means you have to be. You have to boss people around and be a leader on the pitch and that’s what I’ve always tried to do. I guess it comes quite naturally. It’s something I’ve always had in me. “Even when the results weren’t going our way, we knew we had so much talent in the squad and that if we stuck to our processes and made sure we were doing the right things, and putting in the effort, the results would come. “We have fantastic players and coaches

here and we knew that we could go on a winning run and do something special. We stuck to our processes and now we’re seeing the results. The league is very tight, but for us, we’re focusing on one game at a time.” Rob has played with his younger brothers, twins JL and Dan, at Sale Sharks, and against them during his time with the Stormers, in South Africa. But he knows which one he prefers. He added: “Playing with JL and Dan is really, really special. Playing against them was no fun to be honest. “They are both unbelievable and I couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved. Their game is all about being brutal and powerful. It’s their circus act and they do it better than anyone, but they’ve got a lot of skill too. “I love watching them run through people and over people. It gives me so much energy. I think the rest of the team sees what they can do and it lifts everyone.”
A proud Durban native, Rob hasn’t been home since the start of the pandemic. But despite the Manchester weather, including recent storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin, he’s enjoying life in the north west of England. He said: “Durban is an amazing city, but the last time we want back we got stuck there for eight weeks because the pandemic started. My parents come over quite regularly, which has been great for all three of us. “I’m sure everyone thinks they’d rather be on a beach when the weather is like it has been recently. In fact, it was my wife’s 30th birthday last Sunday and we had a BBQ under an umbrella and we were definitely thinking that. But it’s part of the package when you sign up to play here. It’s great to have the chance to play with my brothers and be close to my new nephew. “On the pitch we can still make this a special season too.”

Confidence. Momentum. Luck. Three things that were all in short order before Christmas were clearly on Axe’s list to the big man (Santa, not Simon or Ged), as we haven’t been short of them since. You don’t win four on the bounce, including two away from home, in this league without a bit of all three and it’s been heartening to see us play with a real swagger to our game that means wherever we play and whoever lines up against us, we seem to have the belief in our
systems and players as well as the accuracy to deliver on that promise. Let’s be honest, we needed a hefty chunk of luck to squeeze past Northampton at the Gardens in the form of a George Furbank missed kick in the last play. That said, would we have even been in with a shout in that game a few weeks ago? The form of Reed and Roebuck on the wings got us off to a flying start, the experience of Faf coming off the bench probably saw us home and Rohan’s red hot streak continued with one of his easier tries this season. That’s just the backs – in the pack Joe Jones is looking like he’s making us regret ever letting him leave in the first place, Jono is playing some of the best rugby of his career and can someone please have a word with Eddie Jones about Curtis Langdon because he appears to be missing one of the best hookers in England in his squad.
A bit of biased hyperbole for a Six Nations weekend there, you know us, but it is true that more and more of this team are putting themselves in contention for international caps the way they’re playing. The talent has always been there but we are now seeing performances and results on the pitch to match. The squad has also been bolstered in the last couple of weeks by the signing of young lock Alex Groves and slightly less young lock Dom Barrow (no offence intended Dom – experience is invaluable). With minimal movements out of the club yet announced other than the heartbreaking one we don’t want to talk about, it’s likely we’ll still have some upheaval to come – but so does everyone in the league and we look well placed with our academy talent continuing to step up to the plate. So, thoughts turn to London Irish at home, where a win would be a huge boost to our league position as we continue to push for Top 4. Irish are a team whose form has been superb and, in the politest way possible, frustratingly similar to our own. We win, they win. We beat the champions, they beat Sarries. Their squad is starting to really deliver on the potential they’ve shown in flashes for the last couple of seasons, with a heady mix of experienced international stars and fantastic
young English talent which is great to see. So here it is, Friday night lights at the AJ Bell, and is there anywhere you’d rather be than watching two fantastic teams go up against each other with everything to play for. Say-ul!

We have had a number of players in recent years who have progressed from the M and J’s at AK into the Sale set up. Perhaps the most famous is Mark Cueto, who after starring at AK, went on to play over 300 times for Sale, scoring 76 tries (a Premiership record at the time). Mark also
represented England and the British and Irish Lions. Our current AK 1st team coach is Cameron Nield, a top class flanker currently in the Sharks 1st team squad. More recently, we have Elliot Gourlay, who signed for Sale after leading our U16s to victory in the Cheshire Cup in 2017-18. He made his debut for the Senior Squad vs Newcastle Falcons last November.
Unsung Heroes:
As with every grassroots club, we have a huge number of volunteers
who give up their time every week for the love of rugby. We are immensely grateful to each and every one. All of them deserve medals. However, if we have to mention a couple, Tim Marston (our current Club Chair, and ex M and J Chair) was shortlisted for the RFU Volunteer of the Year Award in 2021. And then there’s Neil Hitchen, aka ‘Dobby the AK House Elf’, who gives up so much of his time to help in all areas of the club from coaching to safeguarding to serving the pints….a real jack of all trades and irreplaceable.

Project Rugby aims to increase involvement in rugby union within groups of young people who don’t normally play the sport; LSEG and Ethnically Diverse groups aged 14 plus and Disability groups aged 16+. The ultimate aim of Project Rugby is to provide regular opportunities to be involved in Rugby Union to a more diverse range of people. Over the past 12 weeks we have been working with Bolton Rugby Club in the communit y and local schools to engage young people, providing them opportunities to start playing Rugby.
