A warm welcome to this Heineken Champions Cup Round of 16 match as the competition for a coveted place in next month’s Marseille final really begins to hot up. The intensity and drama of the knockout stage will increase this season with the historic introduction of home and away legs in the Round of 16, and aggregate scores over the back-to-back fixtures will decide which of the elite clubs – with an impressive total of 28 European titles between them - qualify for the last eight of the tournament. The innovative format will guarantee two compelling, high-stakes matches this month featuring stars of the global game and we can then look forward to traditional quarter-finals and semi-finals culminating in the 2022 showpiece final at the Stade Vélodrome on Saturday, 28 May. In addition, following the conclusion of the Heineken Champions Cup pool stage, Cardiff Rugby, Wasps, Castres Olympique, Glasgow Warriors, Northampton Saints and Bath Rugby will continue their quest for silverware this season having booked their places in the knockout stage of the EPCR Challenge Cup. We are delighted to be joined on the journey to Marseille by our longstanding title partner, Heineken, as well as by our newest official partner, DHL, who provide customised logistics solutions for both the Heineken Champions Cup and the EPCR Challenge Cup, and we would also like to thank Tissot, the Financial Times, Gilbert and Kappa for their continuing support. We acknowledge the superb coverage provided by our TV
partners BT Sport, beIN SPORTS, France Télévisions, Channel 4, Virgin Media, S4C and Sky Italia whose output is complemented by the wide range of linear and OTT platforms which broadcast the Heineken Champions Cup globally. We recognise that this season has been particularly challenging for everyone associated with the game, however, it is now heartening to see fans back at venues across Europe and we will continue to work closely with the leagues and unions to ensure that the high-profile matches in the knockout stage of the tournament can be played safely. On behalf of all at EPCR, enjoy the match and best wishes to you, the supporters, as well as to your club’s players and staff for what promises to be a riveting Round of 16. Yours in rugby, Dominic McKay, EPCR Chairman (interim)

Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for a massive Heineken Champions Cup clash against an opponent we know very well, Bristol Bears. Before I get into the game itself, I’d like to welcome Pat Lam, his coaches and players, and all the Bristol supporters to Manchester. I was asked in the week if this is our biggest game of the season. My answer was that last week was our biggest game of the season and now it’s this one. I imagine Pat would say the same thing. That’s how we look at every single game. You can’t kick stones around for too long in this job. We need to be ready go again and use any frustration we might have over the last two Premiership results to be better this week
against a Bristol team who will be right up for it. There’s a bit of sparkle around the Champions Cup, especially when it involves a trip to one of the big venues in Ireland or in France. The players love a trip like that and it’s great for them to get the experience of playing in that kind of environment.
We won’t have that European adventure with Bristol but both sides have the advantage of playing an opponent we know well. We’ve seen contrasting styles from Bristol in recent weeks, from running everything, to kicking a fair bit against Saracens and I’m sure Pat Lam will have something a bit different up his sleeve for us today. Who knows what to expect, but it’s our job to be ready for whatever comes and to pose them some new challenges. This game is played over two legs, and that poses a challenge in itself. We’ve spoken as coaches about how that impacts our end of game decision-making, and what we can expect from Bristol in terms of their tactics. We have to look at every eventuality, but we have tried not to go down every rabbit hole with the players.
We all know about the salary cap and the challenges that brings for the English sides in Europe. But Exeter and Saracens have won it in recent years. I firmly believe we can compete but the way we do that by developing our own players. We need to get better as a group and as a team and we will. I’m excited about this group of young players and what we can achieve together. We fell short on Friday against Sarries but we have to get back on the horse. There’s no time for any of us to feel sorry for ourselves because we feel we’ve got all the pieces here. It’s just about fitting them all together. Enjoy the game. Alex.
Last year we reached the quarter-final of this competition so we know what to expect from the latter stages. In these games, doing the fundamentals and the basics over the 80 minutes is crucial. There’s a bigger physical element, and of course you have to make your kicks, and take your chances but everything comes off the back of the basics and that’s what we have to get right today. We might be coming in under the radar in this competition, but it’s not just a free hit for us. We’re not here to make up the numbers. The lads believe we can match any team left in the Champions Cup and that’s really exciting. 11

Luke contracted meningocal meningitis just before Christmas 2019, he was gravely ill and recieved excellent care at both Airedale Hospital and Sheffield Childrens Hospital. Unfortunately due to the sepsis which ravaged Luke’s body, he is now a quad amputee, losing his left arm mid forearm, his right just past his elbow and both legs through the knee joints. Luke has done really well since his operations, enduring 23 surgeries in just 10 weeks. He has done lots
of physio and stength building exercises and has started to learn to walk again on some very basic prosthetics, we are just starting down the road of arm / hand prosthesitics. Luke’s recovery and rehabilitation is going to be a long, slow and sometimes difficult process. He will need many sets of prosthesis before he reaches adulthood and quite a bit of specialist or adapted equipment (wheelchairs, bikes, different prostheses for sports etc).
Any help from the Sharks Family would mean the world!

It’s been a frustrating season for Manu Tuilagi, with a hamstring injury picked up in England’s Autumn International series leading to a long lay-off. But now the man who Alex Sanderson describes as the ‘glue’ in his Sharks squad is fit, he’s still smiling, and he’s looking forward to making a big impact in the remaining games of the season – starting with today’s Champions Cup clash.
“I’m feeling really good at the moment and looking forward to this game,” he said. “It’s going to be difficult because Bristol are a really good team who like to throw the ball around. They’ve got some really good players but so have we. “It’s over two legs but that hasn’t really changed our approach. The next week and the next game is always the most important one for us. Whatever happens after that happens. All the focus for us is this week and Bristol Bears. “It has been a frustrating season for everyone at the club. We feel we could have had a few more wins but we can’t think too much about that. The top four is still a possibility but we know other results have to go our way so we have to look forwards with a positive mindset.” That injury picked up against Australia led to a lay-off of more than three months, a challenge that might have been difficult for a young Manu to

But at the ripe old age of 30, and with a young family, his perspective on life and his rugby has changed. “This season has been frustrating at times but I just try and just focus on what I can do, and what I can control,” he said. “I’ve focused on trying to get myself right and that’s all I can do. Being positive is, to me, a choice. Some days it’s not going to be all sunshine and rainbows but I want to come in every single day with a smile on my face, and bring the energy and positivity. Hopefully that spreads around the place. “Every day I wake up and think to myself that I have the best job in 19
the world. I get to go to work and spend time with the boys playing the game that I love. I can’t explain how much I love playing rugby. “For me, life is amazing. It can be frustrating at times, and obviously some days are more challenging but I love it. The environment of a rugby club is like nothing else. I absolutely love it. “Everything I’ve gone through in my career has helped me deal with the tough times. When I was younger, I didn’t always deal with injuries and setbacks like that too well, but now I’m glad that it all happened because it’s given me perspective. “In rugby, and in life in general, we’re all going to have hard times.
It’s about learning from them and coming back stronger. You always need to keep pushing forwards. “I try and help the younger lads as much as I can but sometimes it’s hard to understand that view of life unless you’ve been through those tough times. I have the perspective I have because of those challenges. I’m doing something that I absolutely love and I want to carry on for as long as I can. “This club is moving in the right direction and as a club and a team I feel like we’re nearly there. It was frustrating to not come away with a win against Saracens but we’ve got a chance this week to put that right and show we’ve learned from that game.”

Heading into the much-anticipated knockout stage of the Heineken Champions Cup, three players from TOP 14 clubs have already captured the Champions Try of the Round award. The Round 1 accolade went to Damian Penaud of ASM Clermont Auvergne who, despite his side’s 29-23 defeat by Ulster Rugby at Stade MarcelMichelin, still managed to score a brilliant try. At the outset of the move, JJ Hanrahan cleverly created a mis-match and then after a welltimed pass, Penaud did the rest with a perfect kick ahead and chase for what was a world-class score. In Round 3, Cameron Woki, a nominee like Penaud for the EPCR European Player of the Year award, scored an outstanding try during Union Bordeaux-Bègles’ impressive 45-10 win against the Scarlets at Stade Chaban-Delmas. Rodolphe Pires of beIN SPORTS, who was judging the tries, had no doubt about his
EPCRUGBY.COM/ TOTR
selection. “The tempo of the attack was just right, the players’ movement was good and the combination of passes which eventually led to Woki touching down was superb. All in all, this was approach play and finishing at its very best.” In Round 4, Montpellier Hérault Rugby put in a strong performance after some earlier indifferent form for a 37-26 home win against Exeter Chiefs. This time full-back Anthony Bouthier took the honours following the public vote and the verdict of Virgin Media’s analyst, Alan Quinlan, with a try created by a magnificent Gabriel N’Gandebe break. More spectacular tries are on the cards for the knockout stage, so don’t miss your chance to have your say and vote for the best try!

We are sad to announce that World Cup winners Faf de Klerk and Lood de Jager will leave us at the end of the current season to explore new opportunities. Scrum-half Faf has made 95 appearances for Sharks since joining from South African side Golden Lions ahead of the 2017/18 Premiership season, scoring 14 tries and 39 conversions in his 241 points for the club. Lood, 29, has played 25 times for the club, scoring three tries, since he joined from the Pretoria-based Vodacom Bulls after the 2019 World Cup. Both players played in their country’s third World Cup victory in 2019, with Faf starting at scrum-half and Lood starting in the second row in the match against an England side featuring Sharks teammate Tom Curry. The pair also played key roles for Sharks last season as the club finished third in the Gallagher Premiership and reached the play-offs for the first time in 15 years.
of last season after suffering a broken leg in training. But after returning to play in the British and Irish Lions series, he carried that momentum into the current season, and his 14 appearances for Sharks – ten in the Premiership and four in the Champions Cup – have helped propel the club into play-off contention once again. Everyone at Sale Sharks would like to thank Faf and Lood for their huge contribution to the club over the past five years It’s been an honour to watch them both thrive here at Sharks, becoming a couple of the world’s best players. We wish them all the very best for the future, and our door will always be open to them.
An injury picked up in the 2021 British and Irish Lions series forced Faf to miss the start of the current Premiership season, but since returning to fitness he has made nine appearances, scoring one try in a 26-24 win against Gloucester Rugby at the AJ Bell Stadium. Lood, who has played 53 times for South Africa, missed the end 25

European knock out action is probably the only thing that could have distracted us from watching Manu Tuilagi’s hit on Ben Earl on repeat all week, so it’s a good thing it’s happening this weekend! It has been some time since we had a Heineken Champions Cup knockout game at the AJ Bell, with both of last season’s games being overseas, heading into a two-legged affair with the ever dangerous Bristol Bears is as exciting as it is nerve wracking.
The competition probably now represents the best chance for Sale of winning silverware this season after we fell short against Saracens last week, but more importantly is a great chance for us to continue to grant top level experience to the youngsters who are making their claims for first team regular spots. They will underpin not just next season but the years afterwards for Sale and Axe and we’re seeing a great blend come together in the squad, not just with the obvious impacts this season of Tom Roebuck and Arron Reed, but Conor Doherty and Jack Metcalf also following them into action. Since we penned our last column we had the fantastic win away from home in the Prem Rugby Cup at Quins, with some excellent interplay between Kieran Wilkinson and Tom
Curtis being a particular highlight – any win at Quins is special but it’s another reminder of how bright the future is. We then had a pivot from that free-flowing running rugby to some test match level intensity on Friday night back at the AJ Bell. Fearsome intensity from both sides was the order of the day, some of the hits making you applaud and wince at the same time, and it made for a great atmosphere all around the ground.
and Semi Radranda should be feared and respected in equal measure. That said it’s a great opportunity to put down a marker and take a big lead into the second leg at Ashton Gate – the thing with Bristol is they can have poor spells and then score four tries in about four minutes. Exciting for the neutral, but we don’t write this column for neutrals! Alex, James and Lewis.
A little better execution in Sarries’ 22 (and dare we say it, some more favourable refereeing decisions) and the game could easily have been Sale’s on the night. These sorts of games are the must win for top four hopes, and while we can be proud of the intensity shown and large swathes of the performance, it’s clear there is still a lot of improvement for this team to go at. Even so, we’re seeing it week to week, and it shows we can mix up our playing style to suit opponents – if we can match Saracens physically we should be encouraged. Just fewer knock-ons five metres out from the line please! We’re going to have to show that flexibility in playing style this week as Bristol present a very different threat to Sarries in their expansive running game and sheer pace all over the field. Their season hasn’t gone the way they wanted it to this year, but any team with Charles Piutau

We’re waving off two Shark stalwarts at the end of the season, as Academy lads Curtis Langdon & Cameron Neild will be moving on to Worcester. Hooker-turned-flanker Cameron has been at the club since 2013, when he joined the Sharks Academy after leaving Manchester Grammar School. He made his first team debut the following year and he has gone on to make more than 130 appearances for the club, scoring six tries. Curtis has made 89 appearances for Sharks, scoring 14 tries, since he joined the club’s academy from London Irish in August 2016. He made his first start against Saracens that season, scoring his first try against Leicester Tigers.
season – four as a starter and five as a replacement. Everyone at Sale Sharks would like to thank both Curtis and Cameron for their huge contributions to the club. It will be sad to see two of our Academy lads move on to pastures new, but we wish them all the best for the future and we know they’ll get a great send off from the Sharks Family come the end of the season.
Both players played key roles as Sharks sealed a third-place finish in the 2020/21 Premiership season, with Curtis’s form leading to a call-up to the full England squad in the summer of 2021 for games against USA and Canada. Curtis made his England debut against the USA at Twickenham in July 2021, and he has carried that momentum into this campaign, making 18 appearances, and scoring six tries, including five in the Gallagher Premiership. the Land rOver Cup Youngsters shine as Sharks host Premiership’s Land Rover Cup Some of the region’s brightest young rugby stars got the chance to show off their skills as the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup returned to Sale Sharks. Teams from Manchester, Stockport, Lancashire, Liverpool, Birkenhead, and surrounding areas locked horns at Manchester Rugby Club in front of watching Sharks front-row stars Nick Schonert and James Harper. Almost 40 under-11s and under-12s sides took part with the winners in each age group securing a spot at this year’s Gallagher Premiership Rugby season finale at Twickenham in June. The winning team from the younger group, decided by
nominations based on their sportsmanship and dedication to rugby’s core values, was Glossop RUFC. And joining them from the older category will be Warrington, who secured the under 12s title after seeing off a strong Macclesfield
side in a hotly contested final. They conceded just two tries in their six matches, scoring 18 themselves. The Land Rover Cup is a series of nationwide events organised by Land Rover – the Official Vehicle of Premiership Rugby – which have been running for nearly two decades and have seen more than 100,000 children take part to date. Some, including Sharks prop James as well as England stars Louis Lynagh and Callum Chick, have gone on to realise their dreams of playing for Premiership Rugby clubs. James said: “It doesn’t seem so long ago I was here playing – about ten years now. We spent time with a few of the teams and
it was really good to see them enjoying themselves.” Fellow prop Nick added: “Grassroots rugby is about being social and having fun – it was great to see them back and making lifelong bonds.” Land Rover’s support for the grassroots area of the game in the UK is typified through the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup. A nationwide series of rugby festivals for Under-11 and Under-12 teams, run in conjunction with all Premiership Rugby clubs, the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup allows youngsters to discover rugby.

Vital in fostering the values at the heart of the game, the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup is a key part of the grassroots rugby calendar each season, that allows Land Rover to connect with the rugby community, its players, fans, and families. Since its inception, the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup has helped over 100,000 youngsters discover rugby through the annual rugby festivals. Land Rover recognises this area of the game is essential for the continued growth of rugby and plays an important role in local communities.
