Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for our first fixture of what we hope will be a really successful 2021/22 Gallagher Premiership season. First of all, let me welcome Stuart Hooper, and all the players and staff from Bath Rugby to Manchester. Stuart has built a great side with some fantastic players – and one or two familiar faces too – and I know they’re going to give us a big challenge today but I promise you that your Sharks are up for it. In fact, after we missed out on a final place at the end of last season, every single player has come back in for pre-season with fire in their bellies, desperate to make this season one to remember. If we’re going to achieve what we
want to achieve this season, our Sharks Family is going to play a huge part. I can’t tell you how much we’ve missed you and I know the players can’t wait to run out in front of a packed AJ Bell Stadium today. I know you’ll get behind the players today, but I also know that the responsibility starts and ends with us. The team. Players and management. It’s for us to inspire you and it’s down to us to make sure your energy is focused on a group of
people who will give everything they have from the first whistle until the last. It’s my first full season as Director of Rugby and I was asked this week if we’ll start to see my imprint on the team this season. My answer was that the changes that have been made in the last few months have been a team effort. It’s not my imprint – it’s a new, improved and evolving Sale Sharks. We do have new faces and I know you’ll join me in welcoming Nick Schonert, Tommy Taylor and Simon McIntyre to the club. Tommy and Simon are returning the club after spells away with Wasps and it’s been brilliant to have another couple of northern voices around the place. Nick has been one of the best props in the Premiership for a number of years so we’re really excited to see what he can do. All three are going to make a big impact this season. We’ve also made changes to our coaching staff with the addition of Jamie Langley. Jamie has made a huge impact already and has been a big part of the pre-season focus to make the players more robust to help them sustain performance over 80 minutes. Every pre-season has a physical element but there’s a mental aspect too, and that’s been a huge focus for us. We’ve worked on resilience, and mental fitness and
we can’t wait to see the players take that onto the field. It’s all designed to make this season a big one for the club but it’s going to be tough because this league is the very best in the world. And the Premiership will be even stronger with Saracens back. On a personal note, I’m looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and having a beer with some old friends. I am really excited for this opportunity today and I hope we can do ourselves and our supporters justice with the performance we produce. And that’s really all you can ever hope for and certainly all you can ever promise.
THE CHANGES THAT HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS HAVE BEEN A TEAM EFFORT. IT’S NOT MY IMPRINT – IT’S A NEW, IMPROVED AND EVOLVING SALE SHARKS.

SH rK In THE SPOTLIGhT Y R R U C N E B Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium. We’ve missed you! It’s been a tough pre-season and we’ve worked really hard to build and prepare for today. We can’t wait to put it all into practice when we run out in front of a packed AJ Bell Stadium. Playing in front of empty stadiums just wasn’t the same but for us, today is about making sure we don’t get caught up in the emotion of the day. We have a job to do and we need to be focused on our processes, on our gameplan and on what Bath are going to throw at us. They’re a good side with a lot of
quality players including a familiar face in our former teammate Danny Cipriani. He’s a brilliant player and obviously we’ve talked about him, but there will be 15 players on the pitch and we can’t focus too much on Danny. We won one and lost one against them last season so we know we’re going to have to be at our best to beat them. The build up to today has been all about making sure we’re pushing ourselves but also preparing and focusing on the detail. I’m not too sure that everyone appreciates just how much goes into the preparation for each game. For example would it surprise you if I said that for today we have around 27 different lineout calls and that for each of them there are six different moves involving the ball going to different players. And that’s just the lineout. We spend a lot of time both at Carrington but also at home learning those calls to make sure that come gameday, everyone knows what they’re doing. We’ve also been
integrating our new signings Tommy Taylor, Simon McIntyre and Nick Schonert – into the squad and into the club. All three are massively experienced players and it’s exciting to welcome them to Sale Sharks. I have roomed with Nick at England camp before and it’s fair to say I don’t think that he will want that to happen again any time soon as I don’t think he appreciated my sleep walking! I know you’ll give them a proper Sharks welcome when they pull on the shirt for the first time. Momentum is so important in sport so we know how important it is to get off to a good start in the Gallagher Premiership. There are so many teams with big ambition but come the end of the season we want to be right up there, challenging for the big prizes. But to do that, we need you. So sing your hearts out and make sure we can hear you!

from the Sh rK tank S N A F R E P U S / T S A PODC
It’s great to be back! A first full season for Axe, a sixth season under Simon and Ged’s ownership, a fourth season of the Shark Tank Podcast and of course the return of the Sharks Family to the AJ Bell. Woe betide any opposition player who knocks it on this year. Arguably it’s the most exciting season of not just the last four years, but for a long time as a Sale fan, with a world class squad who have been together for a few years and the Premiership’s most exciting DoR, in our humble (and correct) opinion.
Our season opener against Bath kicks off a tough run of home fixtures, with fellow top 4 contenders Exeter and Quins visiting fortress AJ Bell. With our Lions series stars away it’s a good test of the depth of the squad, but the one thing Alex has shown is his ability to rotate and make the best use of this squad. Part of that, and one of the things we’re most excited for this season, is the academy talent coming through to the first team. It was an amazing season for Raffi Quirke last year and with Faf away with South Africa expect to hear plenty more about his electric pace and passing accuracy on the podcast. Arron Reed looked electric on the wings, and Tom Roebuck and Conor Doherty looked right at home at Premiership level. Up front James
Harper made a huge impact in a difficult position, while Ewan Ashman hugely deserved his Scotland call up last season. And that’s before we even mention a certain pair of twins. It’s also fantastic to see two Sharks academy products in Tommy and Simon back at Sale. Those dark years of Wasps stealing our young talent (and our pizza) feel a long way away, and both will add a huge amount to the team in the push for a top 4 place this year. Add that to the power of Nick Schonert (a beast!), and the scrum should be a real area of strength this year. With Sarries back in the league, Quins as champions, Leicester looking resurgent and Exeter and Bristol just as strong as last season, the league is more competitive than ever and another top 4 place would be a great season this year. It’s a strange feeling to have this level of optimism as a Sale fan – usually we’re sat in August weighing up whether we’d rather sneak into the Top 6 or a good run in Europe. But with the squad, coach and owners we have, we can beat anyone home and away as we’ve shown, so we’re all keeping the Premiership Final weekend free…
If you haven’t listened to our season preview podcast yet it’s still available to do so on all your podcast platforms, and our review of the Bath game will be out next week. You can also find us on twitter at @SharkTankRugby for the more niche Sale Sharks memes and content. Enjoy the game, enjoy being back at the AJ Bell and here’s to a great season!

Well hello there and welcome back! It has been too long my friends, far too long since we have all been together. Friday 6th March 2019 was the last time we had an unrestricted crowd at the AJ Bell, and in the intervening months we have said sad goodbyes to loved ones, to workmates, to friends. It hasn’t been easy for any of us as we continue to slowly get back to what ever normal
used to be. Let’s take a moment this evening to remember the members of our Sale Sharks family that are no longer with us. You will always be part of the Sale Sharks Family. So what has happened since that date? We won the Premiership Rugby Cup, moved to our fantastic new training ground which many saw at the Summer BBQ, and the Axe
is back! We’ve signed three players, our academy continues to excel and we’ve had players in the Lions, England, England U20s, South Africa, Scotland U20s and the USA.
Ridley blew the final whistle it would have been lifted clean off. To beat Bristol Bears 22-12, after a 0-0 but very exciting first half, wow, that really was something!
Our Women’s rugby team has also been bolstered by new signings and in time will be climbing the table. We missed out on the 19/20 playoffs due to the plague, but last season we got to the semi-finals where we lost out to Exeter. The future is bright indeed.
We’ve got away games to look forward to, including a new ground to tick off the ‘been to’ list, London Irish’s new home the Brentford Community Stadium. Personally, we’re off to London Irish, Gloucester, Worcester Warriors, and Christmas in Newcastle for starters, and planning has already started on Clermont in January 2022. We’ve been to the city on both occasions the two teams met previously, and each visit was a brilliant weekend away. I just hope that the bars and restaurants we’ve been to on away trips previously have survived. We went to Newcastle recently for a weekend and a couple of our usual haunts were closed, though hopefully not permanently.
Last season, we managed to squeeze in two games with a reduced attendance; Bristol Bears and Harlequins, and it was fantastic to hear the absolute racket our supporters made at those games, it was louder than Twickenham in 2006! For me, the Bristol Bears match on 28th May was one of the best atmospheres at any game I have attended in my 21 years, including home and away. The supporters were so excited to be back, had such a longing to see live rugby that the energy and passion was almost tenable, like when a thunderstorm is approaching, and the air feels charged with electricity. That energy flowed down the stands towards the pitch and around the players, and in return their excitement at playing back in front of a crowd mingled with it and filled the stadium. If there had been a roof on the place when Christophe
Let’s leave the past where it belongs, live in the present and look to the future with optimism and hope. This season starts right now, and with the squad we have, a blossoming academy and staff that are working hard to get the club up where is should be let’s get on with starting this season with a bang!
