s you probably know, Negroni Sbagliato has been at the centre of a viral online trend in the past two weeks, all thanks to a TikTok video of 'House of Dragon’ series stars, Emma D’Arcy and Alice Cooke, where Emma proclaimed Sbagliato as her favourite cocktail (the video on HBO profile reached over 21million views).

The viral video of TikTok with the stars of The House of Dragon Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy is a pleasant icing on the cake to celebrate 50 years of the Negroni Sbagliato.

Born from a clever mistake by Mirko Stocchetto behind the counter of his Bar Basso, it replaces gin with Prosecco, giving the Negroni an effervescent and thirst-quenching profile. Since the publication of the video,

the online buzz around the cocktail is huge.

Its mentions have increased by 500% in the last two weeks also sign of the increased consumer interest in replicating the cocktail at home.

Moreover, the on trade requests for the Negroni Sbagliato have also registered a surge. This significant increase in interest adds up to a trend that is established for over a decade now in which the revival of the great classic cocktails saw Campari Group as promoter and protagonist, thanks to timeless icons such as MiTo, Americano or Negroni, today the number one most consumed classic cocktail in the world.

It’s to be seen if the Negroni Sbagliato, with its lighter and more sparkling profile that makes it a bridge between the spritz category and the more structured cocktails, will be able to conquer a place in the 2023 rank-

The name ‘2 5 2 6’ signifies the exploration of materiality in fashion design, with robotic garments that simulate the effects of virtual clothing. Robotic clothing meets virtual reality? VAMP takes a closer look at leading fashion designer Ying Gao’s incredibly innovative collection.

sources of inspiration for Gao’s 2 5 2 6 project, as they hold the unique status of not being constrained by the physical reality of materials. However, the two polymorphic outfits of the 2 5 2 6 project are indeed very real. They are woven, hand-screened, and consolidated fabrics specially designed to simulate the effects of virtual clothing.

First things first, you might be wondering what this number means.

Well, 2526 refers to the number of hours Gao invested in creating the two polymorphic robotic garments, from ideation to the finish, from the first line of drawing to the last stitch.

It’s evident upon looking at Gao’s work a surreal undulation generates a play of volume and transparency. In addition, you’ll notice their polymorphic movement and reflectivity; these are the results of an entirely new flexible material that combines glass, precious metals, and silicone. >>

Ying Gao is a Montreal-based fashion designer and professor at the University of Quebec in Montreal and the former head of the Fashion, Jewellery, and Accessories design Program at HEAD-Genève. Ying Gao has achieved personal distinction through her numerous creative projects, presented in more than one hundred worldwide exhibitions. Moreover, her highly varied and creative work has enjoyed international media coverage, such as features in: Time, Vogue, The New York Times, Dazed and Confused, Interni and ARTE.

attie Stewart is a world-renowned artist and illustrator currently based in London. With a vibrant, tongue-in-cheek visual identity, she is a self-proclaimed ‘professional doodler’ with a unique and playful illustration style that extends itself through the worlds of art, music and fashion. Since graduating from Kingston University in 2010 and moving to London in 2011, she has worked with creatives such as Roman Coppola, and for pop artists like SZA, Ariana Grande and Kylie Minogue. Stewart considers herself a ‘professional doodler. VAMP caught up with Hattie to find out more. >>

When did your artistic journey begin?

I studied illustration at University, and whilst studying, I got a few illustration gigs and, as such, built relationships with a few clients. This enabled me to jump headfirst into freelancing more or less straight away, but a number of the early years were spent propping up my income with a lot of bar work, though!

What inspires you?

Growing up, like any kid, I loved comic books and cartoons. As I grew older, I was inspired more by key art from the ‘60s; female pin-up style posters, psychedelia and artists like Stanley Mouse, Jim Phillips and Victor Moscoso.

In a general sense, though, inspiration tends to come more when I’m relaxed and chilling with friends - exploring exhibitions around the city - delving into my library of books and exploring the independent stores around London, and having conversations with friends. Finding inspiration is less about deliberately seeking it - but chilling and exploring and being open to new experiences and ideas.

How would you describe your style?

My work is colourful, playful and often very tongue-in-cheek.

What does your creative process look like?

It’s pretty straightforward. I’ll usually have the spark of an idea and sketch it out in my sketchbook - play around digitally, collage layouts, and then sketch out and draw it up.

What keeps driving you forward in your artistic journey?

I am now fortunate to work with clients who want to collaborate because they like and respect my personal style. As a result, I don’t have to compromise as much as I have done in the past - working on commercial projects often unlocks new ideas, which inevitably inform new and exciting ways of working. >>

How have you managed during the pandemic?

In the beginning, like everyone, I lost work, which was super stressful. That said, the isolation of the lockdowns meant a lot of time work to focus on my work and developing my own illustrated world and gave me time to finesse a lot of ideas I had been ruminating on. On a purely creative level, it was an interesting time for me. Ironically, my imagination sped up as the world slowed down, and that became something to hold onto during difficult and strange times.

Do you have a favourite piece?

My sketchbooks really are my pride and joy.

There are mountains of them; they’re a diary of my career, a constant source of inspiration and a place where I can get all my ideas down on the page and out of my head.

The fabric design I was asked to create for Liberty London last year was a highlight.

Liberty is iconic, and the fabrics are a design institution, so I was honoured to have been invited to collaborate on a piece which will join such an extensive archive. There’s a lot of creativity in the pipeline, but I cannot reveal much at this stage! I am releasing a book next year, it’s been a passion project, and I am really excited to share it, and I’m currently creating a new exhibition where I’ll be showing a lot of new works. INDUSTRIAL– NOITULOVER VAMP explores the complex restoration for the incredible Żnin Sugar Factory in Poland

T

he Żnin sugar factory in Poland was built in the late 19th century. Up until 2004, it was fully operational, producing sugar from beets. Then, as a result of industrial restructuring, it was closed down, and the complex’s buildings were ultimately destined for demolition. Fortunately the story did not end here. ARCHE Design subsequently purchased the complex to renovate the factory and revive the valuable while endeavouring to respect historical changes made to it over generations as well as their aesthetic and technical diversity.

From the project’s onset, the firm focused on preserving the history of the building by retaining almost all elements of the old factory, right down to its screws and sheet scraps. >>

Although significant aspects of the old sugar factory now interact with new features and functions, they are still visible. More minor elements were also maintained and incorporated into the interior design, and collectively, the whole project has retained its natural authenticity. Upon entering the main building, the first impression is that it still serves as a “factory”, with a saturation of stimuli ranging from rough simplicity to emotional characteristics of intimacy and warmth.

Mastering the form of such a complex building proved to be a design challenge, and creating a layout of functions and communication within the vast space was time-consuming. Nevertheless, the architects approached that complexity as a unique asset.

Construction required load transfer calculations of the new structures while reinforcing the old parts. The installation inside the building was incorporated into the interior

design, and the firm ensured the site’s industrial heritage conservation at all times.

In its entirety, the vast complex consists of 27 buildings. No buildings were demolished; instead, all were assigned new purposes (some remain works in progress). The approach to the interiors embraced connections to the surrounding landscape, with old stone pavement being restored and trucks, pipes, masts, and other equipment remaining intact.That tied the whole project together, infusing recognizable character into the site from the moment you enter the front gates.

The central hotel features 4-star accommodation, including exquisite rooms, a restaurant, and a conference space. The second building is a 3-star hotel connected to an aquapark, a spa, a club, and a brewery. >>

The sugar factory is located near the historical centre of Żnin, in North Central Poland. It is close to a sprawling lake which once provided the factory with water. Nowadays, it serves as part of the site’s recreational offering, with ideal conditions for windsurfing and water sports.

Several designers worked on the large facility, including BULAK PROJEKT, MML, and MIXD. The construction manager also contributed greatly, as did industry designers who exhibited great creativity. The support of municipal offices also played an important role, as did the input of former sugar factory workers led by Mr Andrzej. The main brains behind this award-winning project include the President of Arche, Władysław Grochowski, who saw the potential in the building doomed to destruction, architect and Chief Designer Marek Bulak and architect Piotr Grochowski. >>

The festive season is a time of great fun and cheer. But with all the present shopping, party planning, Christmas cooking—not to mention all our everyday responsibilities and commitments—the holidays can quickly turn into a major source of stress for many.

That’s why, at this time of year, it’s wise to dedicate a little energy to your personal selfcare. Some people might equate self-care with expensive days at the spa or a luxurious weekend break. But in truth, you can do a lot to protect and recharge your mental and emotional wellbeing through simple tips and tricks that you can practice anywhere and at any time. #1 Improve your breathing technique Breathing affects our physical and mental state of being. It can calm you, put you in a focused state, or even fill you up with lots of energy. Most of us aren’t aware that by making simple changes to our breathing patterns we can better support ourselves throughout the day.

WELLBEING

A breathing exercise I love to recommend (and practice) is to take a deep breath in through the nose for four counts and out for eight or even twelve. This exercise helps push out all that excessive oxygen pent up in our body, which activates our survival instinct and puts us in a state of anxiety. It’s a quick and easy exercise to do at any time of day, whether you’re at a dreaded work-do or a particularly rowdy family lunch. After a minute or so, it will really help you relax and ease into the present moment. # 2 Set aside a little time to be grateful At Christmas, it’s easy to get caught up in all the things we want or don’t have, all those fantastic events we’re missing out on, all the fun things our friends are up to on social media. So, when you’re experiencing similar feelings of anxiety and FOMO, I recommend practising gratefulness. Gratefulness is the appreciation of what is, rather than focusing on what is not. It’s the acknowledgement of the things we have in our lives that we tend to take for granted—the roof over our heads, our friends and families, the fact that we’re able to enjoy another Christmas.

A simple exercise I love to recommend is to take some time out of your day to write down three things you’re grateful for at that point in time. Take a moment to reflect on your day and find instances to be thankful for. These could be anything—a simple gesture of kindness from a colleague, a surprise present, a delicious meal you enjoyed, getting to spend time with your kids or closest friends. Over time, this exercise will help train and rewire the mind to enter a state of appreciation so that you can more fully enjoy the genuine beauty of life around you. #3 Learn to accept your family’s foibles Families tend to butt heads, especially around the Christmas holidays for some funny reason. There’s always that sibling who knows how to push your buttons or that mother-in-law who ends up hurting your feelings somehow. If that feels all too familiar, then I’d suggest protecting yourself by teaching yourself to accept your family’s foibles and shortcomings.

From my experience working with people from all walks of life, I have come to realise that most people act with good intentions but may not be equipped with the emotional intelligence to express themselves properly.

So, by remembering to accept your family for who they are, good and bad, you’ll start to recognise their words and actions are less about you and more a reflection of their upbringings and life experiences. It’s a great way to better enjoy being in their presence more fully. #4 Do something fun just for you Yes, this is the season to spend time with your nearest and dearest, but it’s equally important to enjoy some quality “me time”.

So, during the holidays carve out some time for something fun that’s just for you. Whether it’s dedicating an afternoon to focus on a hobby, getting stuck in that book or series that you’ve been wanting to start, heading out for a long walk in the countryside, or trying your hand at something entirely new, give yourself space to unwind and have fun just for the fun of it. #5 Connect genuinely In a world of social media and phones, many of us find it increasingly difficult to meet our real human needs. Try share a little chit-chat with strangers while waiting in the queue at the shops. Reach out to friends you haven’t seen in a long while for a coffee and catch up. As much as possible, try to be truly open and present during any social interactions.

These genuine connections, no matter how fleeting, can really make your day and turn your Christmas into a truly special experience.

"Re–Discover the Value of Incredibly Good Sleep" Whether it’s a one off, or a regular issue - we can all relate to the feeling of waking up from a bad night’s sleep. Sure - there are many possible reasons for this, but have you ever considered your mattress could be one of them?

How important is a good night’s sleep?

Well, it helps if you think of your body as a well-oiled machine. During the day, we work and we play, we put our bodies through tremendous amounts of strain and if your body doesn’t get a chance to recharge properly in the evening, you're starting your next day at a disadvantage and using a maximum of maybe 50% capacity. You'll be cranky, tired and not your best self.

How does your bedding affect that?

Our bedroom is our sleep sanctuary, the place where we re-charge, so it is imperative that we take our time to ensure that it is the ultimate environment for rest.

Everything counts; our sheets, mattress, bed, even the curtains we use to drown out the light.

For sheets and quilts, always opt for light bedding. Heavy bedding tends to restrict our movement and trap too much heat cotton is your friend.

Your mattress should be made for you, it should contour to your body's shape and it should always provide consistent support and never sag. The bed is your foundation and should be very supportive.

Sadly whilst a lot of thought is put into the aesthetic of the bed; the colour, the fabric or the look, the actual support structure is generally overlooked and is one of the most important parts of the bed.

When buying a bed, ask about the slats that will support you and your mattress.

What is the guarantee on them? Will they support the weight of me and my partner?

Can I choose different slats that are

stronger and more supportive? Slats must be strong and arched upwards and never downwards. The last thing you want is to have a beautiful bed but a terrible night's sleep due to the cheap, basic slats no one warned you about.

Tips for choosing the right mattress?

My one piece of advice is - do your homework and always budget a little bit more. Sadly the mattress is generally overlooked when planning our bedroom.

We spend thousands on a beautiful sofa or a gorgeous bed and yet the one thing that actually assists our body for a good portion of our day (if you're lucky), is overlooked.

Like everything in life, there are countless different types, qualities and budgets for mattresses. I would recommend buying from a reputable company that has good reviews, one that will actually guide you

TRENDING to the right mattress for you. Especially look for companies that have good after sales as the last thing anyone wants is to have spent a good amount of money on a mattress only to find its sagged or softened after a short period.

Mattress Collection chooses to only sell foam and rubber mattresses – basically mattresses that are solid inside - for a number of reasons which I will try to explain. Spring mattresses have a lot of empty space inside, space that provides an ideal nesting ground for bed mites. Foam or rubber mattresses on the other hand are solid inside. Spring mattresses tend to also have a shorter lifespan plus they also tend to loose heat faster than foam mattresses, thus making it harder to keep a steady temperature which is ideal during sleep.

Hard or soft mattress - what are the different benefits?

As such, it really depends on the person.

What position do you sleep in? How heavy are you? Do you have any medical issues?

All these contribute to you needing the right mattress for you and why I have always advocated to buying in store rather than online. The staff at Mattress Collection are trained to guide people to the right mattress for them depending on all these circumstances, which is hard to do online.

Some good points to keep in mind - if you are a side sleeper, opt for a medium feel mattress, one that will curve around the contours of your body while still providing the right amount of support. Do not go too soft as you will not get the required support over time and your lower back will start to hurt.

If you're a stomach sleeper, go for a firmer mattress. Since the heaviest part of our body is in the mid section, opting for a softer mattress will create an arch in your lower back leading to back pain every morning.

Back sleepers should opt for a middle ground - medium firm is the ideal.

Basically a mattress that provides a bit of softness at the top to fill in the contours of your back and hip area and a firm foundation to support your entire body's weight.

And weight does play a part. If you are heavier, you will sink in more, so opt for a degree firmer. We're all different at the end of the day, which is why we even offer split mattresses for couples, where on the outside it looks like one mattress but internally it will be 2 different types to cater for each persons body. I don't wear my wife's shoes for example so why would I sleep on a mattress that is good for her but not me.

How to care for a mattress?

1. Rotate head to toe as often as possible.

Remember that any surface that gets repeated usage will soften over time. This goes for sofas, chairs, car seats, anything really.

2. Vent your mattress. Every few months or so, more often if you can. Lift your mattress up so that it can air out. Put a box for example underneath it. If you have a storage bed, open it before you go to work and leave it open for the day.

3. Mattresses nowadays also come with zip removable cover, so do remove your mattress cover every few months or so and give it a good wash in the washing machine.

4. Lastly and I would say one of the most important things - buy a mattress protector.

It’s easier to wash than a mattress cover and more importantly, it ensures your mattress remains stain-free so you can still claim your guarantee if needs be.

How often should one change a mattress?

Well it really depends on the usage. For example, a mattress in a guest room that’s only used a few times a month should last a lifetime. For one that’s used daily, we tend to go on the advice of the UK National Bed Foundation that recommends replacing it every 7-8 years mostly due to hygienic reasons. My personal opinion is that generally your body will know when it’s time for a new mattress.

The worst thing that can happen to person is that they spend a good amount of money on a mattress only to find out after a week or 2 that they chose the wrong mattress and cant get a good night sleep.

It's horrible and we've seen firsthand the frustration and panic this causes people.

We deliver it and install it in your bed and from that day you have up to 30 days to either ask for a different model, maybe a firmer or a softer one, or you can ask for a full refund. Its as simple as that. We work with the client to try to find out what the problem is, are they waking up with shoulder pain (order a softer model), lower back pain? (opt for a firmer model), we ask a lot of questions to ensure our clients can get a great nights sleep.

What a lot of people do ask us, is, what happens to the returned mattress? We have an agreement with our factory in Florence where every few months, we send back the mattresses that weren't liked. Our factory first checks them outside its premises (if they are stained or marked, they are not allowed in), it then sanitises them, shreds them, and then resells the shredded foams to Italian companies that use shredded foam products such as shredded foam pillows or bean bags. We then get a credit note from the factory so no money is really lost and everyone is happy.

I will add that our mattresses are Certified Class 1 Medical Devices and so we can never re-sell a used mattress. They are always brand new.

Malta’s clubbing and partying scene, has attracted thousands of tourists to the island every year, offering partygoers the chance to enjoy various popular music genres, such as house, techno, hip hop, reggaeton, pop…

You name it! With outdoor venues and party hotspots all around the country, Malta has become a renowned name in Europe for the ultimate party destination.

Yet it cannot be denied that the most commercial music has dominated the music scene on the island. Many noticed the lack of attention certain genres received, and pointed out the need for more diverse music. This has sometimes left limited space for the lovers of different music niches to party to their favorite tunes. For Afrobeats and other associated genres, this has been the case.

Afrobeats, also known as afro-pop, afro-fusion, or Naija Beats is a music genre originating from West Africa, Nigeria particularly, and mostly refers to contemporary West African pop music. In the recent decade this movement has become increasingly international and gained popularity in and out the African diaspora, which has allowed it to reach more European audiences.

After the complications covid presented to the nightlife scene across the globe, as the summer finally opened up for more events, and clubs fully reopened to the public, DJ Shay Who, an experienced DJ and one of the pioneers of the Afrobeats scene in Malta, saw this as the perfect opportunity to launch Afro Island. The brand had been under development for many months, and finally its time had come to be presented to the world.

Its aim? To provide the ultimate destination for the lovers of African music, and to create a place where people could gather and celebrate their appreciation for the different genres coming in and out of Africa. Afro Island does not only celebrate Afrobeats but also other genres such as Amapiano, R&B, Bashment, Dancehall, Afrohouse, Asakaa and more.

The first official event was launched this past August. A Day & Night Afrobeats pool party hosted at the MedAsia playa beach club. The event received much enthusiasm from the locals and tourists visiting Malta,

and emphasized the presence of a vibrant community of Afrobeats lovers, on an island as small as ours.

The party showcased talented local DJ’s such as Urban Rocket, DJ M Funky, and DJ Daniel Veloso but also international talents such as DJ DNA who came all the way from the UK. The after party as well as the exclusive boat party, complimented the event, leaving those present with memorable experiences.

To close off the summer season, Afro Island had its second edition pool party in September. On this occasion it showcased another international headliner, Predz UK, as well as a live performance from local artist, Jigga.

In October Afro Island hosted British-Ghanian Afrobeats artist A-Star, also known as “the King of Afro Dance”. The artist is well known thanks to hit songs such as “Kupe Dance” and “Balaya”, songs which attracted millions of views on Youtube. The songs popularized different dance moves, allowing dance steps like the “kupe” to become iconic in the Afro-dance community.

Their last event also saw the appearance of another international talent, DJ FiiFii coming from the UK. It is clear to see that the abundance of African based talent arriving in Malta is richer than ever, and the crowds are responding accordingly.

There is a lot more to expect from Afro Island in Malta this upcoming winter and in 2023, as new collaborations, new artist appearances, and new concepts are set to happen. From events, fashion, media and more, Afro Island is determined to remain at the forefront of driving the Afro scene in Malta.

Seeing its community grow in the meantime is a beautiful sight, especially for those that had been waiting for a space like this to form in Malta.
