MALTA: A SAFE HARBOUR FOR SMART WEALTH & CORPORATE TAX STRATEGY

I

n an increasingly uncertain global landscape, stability has become the ultimate luxury. For high-net-worth individuals and international investors, the question is no longer simply where to grow wealth, but where to protect it, structure it intelligently, and enjoy life while doing so. Set at the crossroads of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, Malta has steadily emerged as one of the Mediterranean’s most compelling answers. A Jurisdiction Built on Stability and Access Malta’s appeal begins with its unique positioning. As a fully-fledged EU member state with a long-standing reputation for political stability, it offers investors the reassurance of operating within a regulated, transparent European framework—while retaining a level of

flexibility rarely found in larger jurisdictions. English as an official language, a robust legal system rooted in both civil and common law traditions, and seamless access to European markets create an environment that feels both secure and globally connected. For investors accustomed to volatility, Malta represents something increasingly rare: predictability. Intelligent Corporate Structuring Beyond lifestyle, Malta distinguishes itself through its corporate tax framework, one that rewards thoughtful structuring rather than aggressive positioning. While the headline corporate tax rate stands at 35%, Malta’s full imputation system allows for significant efficiencies. Through legitimate

refund mechanisms available to shareholders, effective tax rates can be reduced substantially depending on the structure and nature of the income, falling as low as 5% in the case of qualified trading income. This is not about secrecy or opacity. On the contrary, Malta’s system is fully compliant with EU directives and international standards, offering clarity and legitimacy, qualities that sophisticated investors now prioritise above all else. Holding companies, trading entities, and international operations can all be structured in a way that balances efficiency with compliance, making Malta particularly attractive for entrepreneurs, family offices, and globally mobile businesses. >>

A Lifestyle That Matches the Balance Sheet Of course, wealth strategy is only part of the equation. Malta’s true strength lies in its ability to combine financial intelligence with quality of life. Overlooking the Mediterranean, developments such as those surrounding Mercury Towers exemplify a new standard of luxury living where architecture, hospitality, and investment converge. Residents enjoy a lifestyle defined by proximity: world-class dining, marina culture, private aviation links, and a year-round climate that encourages both relaxation and activity. Safety, walkability, and a strong expatriate community further enhance Malta’s appeal as a relocation destination for discerning individuals and families. Residency and Long-Term Vision Malta’s residency and relocation frameworks are designed with long-term value in mind. Whether through permanent residency programmes or tailored solutions for high-networth individuals, the country offers pathways that align with both personal and financial

objectives. Specifically, Malta allows individuals and families to establish a stable, EU-based residence under favourable tax conditions, access a network of over 80 double taxation treaties, and benefit from a non-domicile framework that can significantly limit exposure to Maltese tax on foreign-source income. For investors seeking continuity across generations, jurisdictions, and asset classes, this level of strategic alignment is critical.

For investors seeking guidance on residency, corporate structuring, or lifestyle integration in Malta, CSB Group provides expert, tailored advice, helping ensure every decision is both secure and strategically aligned with long-term goals. Ø Author: Malcolm Manara, Senior Manager – Tax

The Mediterranean’s Modern Safe Harbour The concept of a “safe harbour” has evolved. It is no longer defined solely by low risk, but by intelligent design: jurisdictions that combine regulatory strength, tax efficiency, lifestyle quality, and global accessibility. Malta delivers on all fronts. For those looking to anchor their wealth in a place that offers both security and sophistication, the island is no longer a hidden gem; it is a deliberate choice. WELLNESS

THE ART OF WELLNESS ROOTED IN MALTA

I

n a world that moves at full speed, where screens, noise, and deadlines fill every moment, stillness has become the rarest form of luxury. Yet it’s this very stillness that restores us — body, mind, and spirit. For more than 25 years, Myoka Spas has embodied that philosophy, redefining wellness across Malta. Set within the island’s most prestigious hotels — including the Hilton in St Julian’s and the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bugibba — Myoka blends global healing traditions with the effortless calm of the Mediterranean. Each ritual is crafted with intention and care, designed to quiet the mind, awaken vitality, and restore harmony. Because when the mind softens, the body finally has space to speak. Seasonal Highlight: The Japanese Head Spa Among Myoka’s seasonal offerings, the Japanese Head Spa has quickly become a guest favourite. Performed individually or side by side,

this deeply restorative ritual combines a meticulous scalp and hair treatment with the serenity of traditional Japanese techniques. The experience unfolds as a rhythmic sequence: a cleansing shampoo and conditioning soap massage, followed by a nourishing hair and scalp mask, hydrating face mask, and revitalising scalp serum. Beyond improving scalp and hair health, it offers a rare form of relaxation—one that quiets a racing mind and leaves you grounded, refreshed, and utterly renewed. Seasonal Highlight: The New Rituals Collection Alongside its signature treatments, Myoka has unveiled a new collection of luxurious rituals inspired by nature’s most restorative ingredients. Designed to nourish, relax, and renew, these indulgent experiences combine rich botanical extracts, exquisite textures, and expert therapeutic touch to create a deeply immersive spa journey. The collection features revitalising hemp rituals, energising birch-infused massages, luxurious

jasmine body therapies, and antioxidant-rich red wine experiences that combine soothing massage oils, rejuvenating face masks, and comforting foot rituals. Each treatment is carefully crafted to awaken the senses while restoring balance and vitality, leaving guests feeling deeply relaxed, beautifully nourished, and glowing from within. A Tribute to Maltese Ingredients Equally captivating is Myoka’s Maltese Retreat, a signature treatment that celebrates the island’s natural treasures. The ritual begins with a fullbody scrub using authentic Maltese sea salt— mineral-rich and purifying—before transitioning into a massage with local olive oil, prized for its antioxidant and hydrating properties. The journey concludes with a soothing face mask infused with Maltese Prickly Pear extract, a local botanical known for its anti-aging and revitalising effects. It’s a treatment that feels like a love letter to Malta itself—sun-soaked, earthy, and nurturing.

Floating into Sound

A Sanctuary of Stillness

For those in search of something truly unique, the Floating Sound Bath at Myoka DoubleTree offers a multisensory escape unlike any other. Guests float effortlessly on warm water as sound vibrations from crystal bowls and handpans ripple through the body. The combination of sound therapy and water immersion quiets the mind, releases muscular tension, and restores emotional equilibrium. It’s a deeply connective experience— ideal for couples seeking a shared moment of calm.

Every Myoka experience extends beyond the treatment room. Guests enjoy complimentary access to spa facilities, including hydrotherapy pools, saunas, and steam rooms, ensuring each visit becomes a holistic journey. Seasonal spa packages, some paired with light lunches, further encourage guests to linger—to breathe, to rest, to simply be. In a world that moves too fast, Myoka Spas offer a rare reminder that wellness is not just about

VALLETTA:

A LIVING CANVAS OF ART AND HERITAGE

T

here is no better way to understand Malta than by wandering through the grid-like streets of its capital, Valletta, and experiencing centuries of art, resilience and identity first hand. Yet preserving a city of such richness requires more than admiration alone. It demands careful stewardship, and an enduring commitment to heritage. Through a series of restoration and conservation initiatives, the Malta Airport Foundation has become a patron of projects that safeguard Valletta’s cultural legacy, while enriching the experience of all who pass through its streets. One of the capital’s lesser-known gems is the Church of Ta’ Gieżu, one of Valletta’s oldest churches which dates back to 1575. Tucked away from the busier tourist routes, between St John’s and St Ursula streets, the church offers a moment of calm and reflection, while also housing an extraordinary collection of sacred art. With the support of the Foundation, a set of 14 paintings within the church has been meticulously restored, allowing visitors to appreciate the original, intricate detail of the second Via Sagra to ever be introduced in a Maltese church. Just a few steps away, Valletta’s sacred heritage gives way to contemporary artistic expression at the Victor Pasmore Gallery; a

refined cultural space dedicated to one of Britain’s most influential abstract artists, who made Malta his home. The gallery’s refurbishment in recent years reflects a wider commitment to nurturing the island’s evolving cultural landscape, ensuring contemporary art continues to flourish through a dynamic programme of exhibitions curated throughout the year. No visit to the capital city would be complete without a visit to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, where another chapter of Valletta’s story unfolds beneath the surface. Here, visitors can explore the Lascaris War Rooms complex, a remarkable site linked to Malta’s wartime story, and the Operation Husky Museum. Restored by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna in collaboration with the Malta Airport Foundation, this underground operations centre once played a crucial role during the Second World War. Today, the restored space offers visitors a vivid insight into Malta’s strategic importance during the conflict and the resilience of the island during one of the darkest periods in European history. Further along the capital’s storied waterfront, the Lower Barrakka Gardens remain among Valletta’s most evocative settings, framed by sweeping vistas of the Grand Harbour. Right beside the gardens stands the Siege Bell War Memorial, a solemn tribute to those lost during

the Second World War. Today, the memorial has become the focus of restoration efforts through another collaboration between the Foundation and Heritage Malta. When the bell rings again across the harbour, it will restore not only a cherished landmark, but also one of Valletta’s most poignant rituals of remembrance. What makes these projects especially meaningful is not only their historical value, but the way they enrich the visitor experience. Each restored site adds depth to Valletta’s cultural landscape, encouraging travellers to look beyond the postcard views and discover the stories that shaped Malta. These are just a few of the many projects that the Malta Airport Foundation has invested in since being established in 2014. Through its continued support of restoration, conservation, and cultural initiatives, the Foundation is helping to preserve Malta’sartistic and architectural heritage while strengthening the island’s identity for future generations. EATING OUT

“ P L AC E I S N OT J U S T R E F E R E N C E D BU T AC T I V E LY P R E S E N T I N E V E RY C O U R S E .” ION at Sea is a private dining experience set entirely on the water, offering an intimate extension of Simon Rogan’s two-Michelinstarred ION Harbour. Running from Friday 19 June to Sunday 4 October 2026, it brings fine dining out of the restaurant and onto the open sea, framed by the Grand Harbour of Valletta and the wider Mediterranean. The experience takes place aboard a Riva 44 yacht, chosen for its classic design and close connection to the water. Rather than a static dining room, the setting shifts continuously with light, movement, and horizon, creating a constantly evolving backdrop for each course. Each evening is reserved for a single private booking of two to four guests. There are no shared tables or split services, allowing the entire experience to unfold at a deliberate pace. Service is designed to be unobtrusive and precise, with every detail focused on maintaining privacy and continuity from arrival to return to shore. As the yacht leaves Valletta and moves into open water, the atmosphere changes noticeably. The city recedes, sound softens, and the harbour becomes a field of reflections and low light. Courses are served in rhythm with the

movement of the boat, with each dish designed to respond to its environment rather than sit apart from it. The result is a tasting menu that feels directly tied to place, season, and setting. The culinary direction is led by chef Charlie Wilson and restaurant manager Arsen Brahaj, both part of the team behind Simon Rogan’s Michelin-starred Aulis Phuket. Working alongside Simon Rogan and executive chef Oli Marlow, the team has developed a seasonal menu built around produce from the Maltese islands, shaped by a broader farm-to-table philosophy that defines Rogan’s restaurants. The menu changes throughout the season, reflecting availability from local growers, fishermen, and producers. Dishes are structured to highlight contrast and restraint rather than complexity for its own sake, allowing ingredients to remain central while still supporting a multicourse fine dining format at sea. Service is led on board by Arsen Brahaj, whose experience in Michelin-level hospitality ensures a structured but relaxed rhythm throughout the evening. The focus is on timing, awareness, and adaptation to conditions on the water, where no two evenings are identical.

Beyond the cuisine, ION at Sea is designed as a complete sensory experience. Sound is shaped by the water and wind rather than music-driven ambience. Light shifts naturally from golden hour into dusk and night. Movement is subtle but constant, with the yacht’s motion becoming part of the dining experience rather than something to adjust for. The experience operates on selected evenings throughout the week, specifically Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Each journey is self-contained, beginning and ending in Valletta, with the route determined by weather and sea conditions to ensure comfort and safety. ION at Sea is positioned as an extension of fine dining rather than a departure from it. It removes the fixed walls of a restaurant while maintaining the discipline of Michelin-level cooking and service, replacing architectural enclosure with open water, horizon, and changing light. The result is a dining format where place is not just referenced but actively present in every course, every pause, and every shift in the environment. he work of Kane Cali positions us at the crossroads between several forces and realities — the natural and the man-made; the whole and the fragment; the hopeful and the dystopian; our collective past and an unknown future; intention and chance; the digital and the tactile; the pursuit of beauty and the onset of disaster. The School of Art in Valletta has been a cradle of Maltese art production since the early 20th century. Here, the careers of so many found their beginnings. The work Cali is showing is

juxtaposed across spaces of tuition and amongst casts and busts. They are in stoic confrontation with a loaded history. Here, the hands that carve and shape, paint and shade, reach out to shake those that script to sculpt, scan to see. The context in which the work is displayed continues to build on this. What Cali references at the start of his process is the discovery of fire. The energy that has grown since that moment has given agency to humankind for millennia — agency to thrive, to find light, to create warmth, to prepare sustenance. As he creates his work, he is

watching images of forest fires destroying the land around us, heat swarming the globe, and an Anthropocene that is unable to escape its reliance on fossil fuels. The “hyperobject,” as coined by Timothy Morton, refers to emergent phenomena which eclipse our own understanding of them. As their scale, complexity, and non-local nature grow, the perception of their potential harm seems to evaporate. It is for this reason that Cali positions the art-historical reference of the bust within this body of work. >>

The figurative has always been at the heart of Kane Cali’s practice. For this project, he seems to propose a moment of awareness — a frozen second within two infinite poles racing in either direction; his subjects immortalised in an uncertain trajectory of time. I see in this work three distinct moments: the friction at the initial spark, the accelerated moment of combustion, and the ashes as they submit to gravity in an irreversible pile. The beginnings of this element — caught by the wind and spelling prosperity for a whole species — hold the same potential to eliminate the very ecosystem that sustains its existence. This potential is embedded within the material nature of the work. Condensed stories of time, knowledge, and energy find themselves fixed within a new reality. Clay, marble, charcoal

— whether the real or its counterfeit equivalent — take on a fragile embodiment, one which echoes the same fragile danger of a raging flame. This material choice takes us to a different colour experience than what we have previously seen from Cali. The work loses the candy-like lustre we have come to expect from him. In its place, we find raw, flawed residue; fragments of human intervention upon natural and digital landscapes. Perhaps this is best expressed in the found concrete works from which his subjects emerge. But what is his point? Where do we go from here? This is a critical moment which he is placing us at. Our evolutionary history has been determined by the ability to harness the potential of our natural world for our own benefit. As

evolution takes us forward, he seems to express that we are at a cusp — caught between two poles, between a kind of existential dread and a resolute calmness. The work in this exhibition seems to elevate the experience of that cusp. It takes the collective psyche and freezes it, asking us to acknowledge how, beyond the individual, this reality might unfold. In that understanding, the spectator finds a moment of empowerment — an agency to appreciate more acutely the role they play within a massive, but cyclical, process. This project warns us of the potential fire has to de-evolutionise us. So far, the breaks and collapses he proposes are just a simulation — but he seems to infer that we lie just at its threshold. All we did was start a fire. Ø

or Maltese paper artist James Dimech, paper is far more than a simple material; it is a medium capable of expressing both delicacy and strength. Trained as an architect and internationally recognised for his innovative paper couture, Dimech has spent more than a decade exploring how ordinary sheets of paper can be manipulated into sculptural garments that exist somewhere between fashion, art, and architecture. His architectural training shows clearly in his approach: every fold and seam is considered not just for its visual effect but for the structural logic that holds the entire piece together, much like a building must hold its own weight. Through folding, layering, and structural experimentation, he challenges the perception of paper as fragile or temporary, transforming it instead into a material of surprising elegance and presence. What might seem, at first glance, like a delicate or even disposable medium becomes, in his hands, something closer to architecture worn on the body — precise,

deliberate, and engineered to hold its form. His latest project, Three Stars of Style, explores how symbols associated with excellence and recognition can be translated into wearable art. Rather than reproducing these references literally, Dimech approached the idea through abstraction and form, creating three distinctive paper dresses that embody refinement, precision, and celebration. Each garment stands as an individual piece, yet together they form a unified trio, a visual dialogue between silhouettes that share a common rhythm and identity. The relationship between the three pieces was central to the project from the outset; rather than designing each dress in isolation, Dimech conceived them as variations on a single idea, each one responding to and completing the others. To reinforce this connection, the dresses were presented on three sisters, bringing a natural sense of harmony and familiarity to the composition and strengthening the idea of

the designs as a family of forms. This choice of presentation added an emotional dimension to the project, allowing the inherent bond between the models to echo the conceptual bond between the garments themselves, so that the visual rhythm of the collection felt lived-in rather than staged. The aesthetic direction of the dresses subtly references the elegance of 1960s fashion, a decade known for its bold geometry, confident femininity, and architectural silhouettes. These influences appear in the clean lines and graphic structures that define the garments, while still remaining firmly rooted in Dimech’s own contemporary language of paper manipulation. The silhouettes nod to the era’s love of structure and symmetry, yet they avoid pastiche; nothing about the dresses feels like costume or replica. Instead, the historical reference operates as a starting point, a rhythm to build from, rather than a script to follow. >>

“THE MOST UNEXPECTED MATERIALS CAN HOLD THE MOST CONSIDERED IDEAS.” Crafted primarily in ivory paper, the dresses maintain a sense of softness and purity, while red accents introduce a powerful visual contrast, activating the compositions and echoing the iconic visual identity that inspired the project. The interplay between the two tones gives each piece a graphic clarity, allowing the eye to read the structure of the garment at a glance while still appreciating the intricacy of the handwork beneath it. Through meticulous handcraft and structural experimentation, Dimech transforms paper into three-dimensional couture forms that

celebrate imagination, craftsmanship, and artistic freedom. Each dress requires hours of careful folding and shaping, a process that leaves no room for error given the unforgiving nature of the material; a single misjudged crease can compromise the integrity of the entire structure. This precision is part of what gives his work its quiet tension, the sense that something so refined could, in theory, be undone in an instant, yet remains standing through sheer technical mastery.

into a medium of expression capable of carrying meaning, beauty, and narrative, proving that the most unexpected materials can hold the most considered ideas. “Paper has always fascinated me because it holds two opposite qualities at the same time — fragility and strength. When folded and shaped with intention, it becomes a language capable of expressing ideas, emotions, and even celebration.” – James Dimech Ø

THE POWER OF MOVEMENT

Josef Pace has spent twenty years studying the way we move — and what it reveals about everything else. As founder of The Movement School Malta and International Education Officer for The Running and Movement School UK, he is bringing a methodology that is changing rehabilitation and performance on a global scale. We sat down with him to find out why movement is the most powerful diagnostic tool we have and why most are getting it completely wrong.

Q: What inspired you to establish The Movement School Malta, and what makes its approach different from traditional physiotherapy or fitness training? Following 20 years of physiotherapy practice in both public and private settings, I had observed all forms of rehabilitation and physiotherapyspecific interventions. I attended numerous courses, which usually require you to either adopt a full methodology as a whole or just take pieces of it. Internally, however, nothing fully joined the dots for me, and I was literally at a crossroads of moving into full-time healthcare management. Somewhat reluctantly, I took a casual interest in a method developed by Mike Antoniades, founder of The Running and Movement School UK. Together with a personal trainer friend of mine, I attended a two-day course in London specifically focused on the biomechanics of running. From the very first hour of that course, I knew this person had something unique, and I realized I could learn a lot from him and his methodology. The rest

is history, and The Movement School Malta was established. The core difference is that this method looks deeply at movement patterns, simplifying the concepts of biomechanics and neuroscience for the therapist. It is a comprehensive system with a clear start and end—not a “bit of this and a bit of that” approach. It requires time, and no shortcuts can be taken. The method grows on you; the therapist or coach improves every day, yielding fascinating results over the years. I like to compare it to the aging of vintage red wines: the longer you leave them to age, the better the wine becomes. The more you read and treat, the more you see. The more I treat, the greater the variety of cases I encounter on both a local and international level. Consequently, the more I learn, the more prepared I feel to treat difficult cases that are otherwise considered impossible to manage or treat.

a gradual understanding of the nervous system— the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves—as the powerhouse of who we are, how we move, how we interact with the environment, and how we perceive emotions and trauma (both physical and psychological). In essence, it is a method that provides a forensic analysis of what we have been through, psychologically and physically, from conception all throughout life. Q: For readers who may not be familiar with movement therapy, what exactly is “movement analysis” and why is it so important for overall health and performance? All movement is generated from the brain. The way we move is programmed into our nervous system through every single experience we are subjected to throughout our lives. Think of movement analysis as a reflection of your past and present. >>

In conclusion, the uniqueness of the method lies in INBØUND

At The Movement School, our assessment and treatment methods—combined with our team’s academic training across various human function disciplines—have a direct, successful influence on rehabilitation outcomes, allowing clients to exceed their perceived performance potential.

Any injuries, psychological or physical trauma, ill health, neurodivergence, or physical and mental disabilities are stored in the brain and ultimately revealed through movement. The uniqueness of our method is the ability to identify these faulty movement patterns and manage to change them through a process called movement re-patterning. Correct movement translates directly into improved health and enhanced performance through the optimal functioning of the body.

Q: Is The Movement School only for athletes and runners, or can everyday people and children also benefit from its programmes?

Correct movement is considered to be the universal language of freedom. Even Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine, prescribed movement as therapy. Once we move correctly, we can ensure healthy biomechanics, followed by improved performance in any activity we desire. That activity may be as simple as walking, or as complex as ballet and elite sports disciplines.

Not at all. The Movement School caters to all ages, all abilities, and all conditions. We work across a broad spectrum of rehabilitation fields, including neurodivergence, stroke recovery, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, ADHD, and Autism. Alongside this, we specialize in athletic and sports-specific injury prevention, rehabilitation, and elite performance.

Q: How does The Movement School help people identify inefficient movement patterns that may be causing pain or injuries? The Movement School is the only certified clinic on the island. All team members working here are either fully certified or currently in training to become fully certified. Full certification combined with ongoing training and strict quality control is imperative to ensure that our very high standards as a certified clinic are maintained. We utilize a unique, patented assessment tool to identify the individual’s scores and movement inefficiencies. Various video recordings are taken for analysis during the session, and each movement segment is broken down based on the client’s historical data before the physical assessment even begins. Movement analysis never lies. Following any form of trauma, the brain subconsciously releases the compensatory patterns it developed over time. These are picked up by our trained movement coaches and discussed with the client. All of these patterns relate directly to the issue the client is seeking help for, which can range from chronic pain to wanting to improve speed and overall athletic performance. The central nervous system never lies; however, it can be trained to restructure and re-pattern movements for optimal efficiency.

Q: What are some of the most common physical problems you see today that are linked to poor movement habits or modern lifestyles? Q: You often speak about the connection between neural stimulation and movement. Can you explain how the brain and nervous system influence physical performance and recovery? Traditionally, rehabilitation has focused primarily on regaining range of motion, balance, stability, and eventually strength by exercising the muscles for power and endurance. What is often taken for granted, however, is the organ and system that actually powers those muscles. The nervous system relies on constant feedback from the environment through all our senses, generating action and movement via neural activation and stimulation. The brain and nervous system constitute a highly trainable organ system that is fluid and neuroplastic. The term neuroplasticity was developed by Professor Michael Merzenich and is now an established concept in the fields of neuroscience, neurorehabilitation, and performance.

Undoubtedly, poor posture in youth and teenagers. There is a profound lack of understanding regarding the basics of human locomotion, starting with walking. Most people have no idea how to walk well and are actually causing micro-damage to their bodies rather than gaining benefits because they walk incorrectly. Furthermore, we are seeing children as young as six years old who lack gross fundamental movement skills and struggle to move, walk, and run properly. The technology age has generated a pandemic of immobility. This sedentary lifestyle essentially switches off the nervous system by silencing the primary drivers of human movement. All of this leads to repetitive stress injuries, as well as a much higher injury risk rating for those who do decide to engage in sports or movementbased activities without a proper foundation. >>

Apart from representing The Running and Movement School in Malta, I also serve as the International Education Officer. I work closely with our founder, Mike Antoniades, to spread this methodology across all continents. The direct benefits of this global role for Malta are huge. Malta is becoming a central reference point for an increasing number of international clients who travel here specifically for intensive training weeks. We are acting as a hub for international training while simultaneously performing research on the method with prominent organizations like Inspire.

of euros globally, considering back pain is the number one contributor to medical sickness and workplace injury worldwide. Through proper movement, we can drastically reduce the need for surgical interventions or invasive pain management. As individuals, we need to actively take responsibility for our health rather than expecting the healthcare system to provide quick-fix solutions once we are already in pain. Most painful MSK issues can be avoided if proactive healthcare prevention strategies are introduced early on.

Q: Can movement retraining actually prevent injuries before they happen, and if so, how does that process work? Absolutely. A major pillar of our work is proactive injury prevention. We evaluate many individuals— including everyday people who are not involved in competitive sports—to calculate their specific injury risk rating. By far, the largest musculoskeletal (MSK) issue in the world is back pain. Back pain can be highly preventable through the correct mechanical use of the body and movement re-patterning. Successfully addressing this could save billions

Indeed, I have had the privilege of being invited to speak at the International Federation of Sports Medicine, the European Federation of Sports Medicine, and the Baltic Sports Medicine Association, among others. Over the years, the findings and methods developed by our founder, Mike Antoniades, are consistently being validated by rapid advances in neuroscience. Naturally, when people see the real-world clinical results achieved across our multiple global sites, interest grows rapidly. While the medical and scientific worlds remain highly focused on traditional evidence-based medicine, I prefer to work through clinical-based evidence. This tangible approach has attracted interest from world-leading research institutions and scientists who have studied our method. They are currently collaborating with us to produce research that will be published in highly rated, peer-reviewed journals.

Together with Inspire, we are conducting research on the benefits of the method in young children with Autism. We have received invaluable support from local foundations, such as the AX Foundation, for this research, and we are currently gathering the remaining necessary funds to fully launch the project. Anyone interested in supporting this research is welcome to reach out to me directly. We have also introduced this method in Africa, and the results we are achieving there are immense. This will raise the level of rehabilitation and athletic performance across the continent, elevating sports in countries that already produce international stars. Our overall mission is to bring this method to everyone and make what is usually considered “elite training” accessible to the general public.

medicine conferences. Why do you think this approach is gaining global attention?

Patience, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the method—and to the people chosen to work alongside us—ensure that our delivery always meets the highest standards. Ultimately, the people who use our services are our best ambassadors, proudly flying the flag in all corners of the world. The process itself is simple: we teach the nervous system the correct way to utilize the body through intentional repetition and active movement engagement. Ironically, most people are actually “exercised” (meaning stressed and strained) as a result of performing incorrect exercise. That being said, I can positively say that great progress has been seen in Malta over the past 30 years. More can always be done, but it must not become a simple “tick-box” exercise. I have been working with a number of schools, corporations, and sports clubs that are seeing the immense benefits of integrating movement directly into their daily culture. It is clinically proven that this increases both productivity and overall satisfaction in the workplace. Q: You’ve presented the Running and Movement School methodology internationally, including at major sports

Q: Looking ahead, what is your vision for The Movement School Malta and how do you hope it will impact health, rehabilitation, and performance in Malta in the coming years? My vision is to firmly establish Malta as the central global hub for The Running and Movement School across rehabilitation, performance, physiotherapy, professional education, and scientific research. My goal is not simply to “grow huge” for the sake of it, but rather to expand our international network. This will ensure that the brilliant framework developed by Mike Antoniades remains fully accessible to all those who share the vocation of helping people through movement. This truly is a vocation, and our ultimate reward comes from the successful, life-changing outcomes of the people who walk through our doors. Ø

Local Heritage Meets Tr

I

n the heart of Malta, where centuries of history echo through limestone streets and restored Baroque architecture, Captain’s Cut Leather offers far more than handcrafted accessories. It offers an experience rooted in heritage, craftsmanship, and the enduring value of objects made with purpose. From its ateliers in Valletta and Rabat, old Mdina, the Maltese brand invites visitors to discover a world where traditional leatherwork, historic spaces, and contemporary design come together in a deeply authentic way.

At the centre of the Captain’s Cut story is a workspace where heritage is not simply preserved, but lived every day. The boutiques are housed within restored historic buildings in Valletta and Rabat, while the atelier itself occupies part of the recently restored Agostinian Monastery, a Baroque landmark designed by Andrea Belli in 1740. Within these remarkable surroundings, the restoration of old stone and the craft of leatherwork exist in natural harmony, creating spaces that feel inseparable from the artistry they contain. The brand was founded by Keith John Caruana,

whose years of service as an Army Captain shaped the discipline, precision, and sense of purpose that continue to define Captain’s Cut today. During his time stationed at the Naval Academy in Livorno, Italy, he developed a deep appreciation for premium leather and traditional craftsmanship through his exposure to Italian material culture. That admiration later evolved into a vocation in Malta, sparked by the challenge of sourcing high quality Tuscan leather for the restoration of a vintage Land Rover. Determined to achieve the level of quality he envisioned, he taught himself the craft from the ground up. >>

Captain’s Cut has maintained a presence in Berlin for more than two years through a collaboration project while remaining firmly rooted in Malta’s cultural identity. Keith John Caruana also worked within the elite team of leather artisans responsible for producing pieces for the principal actors of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, contributing to a production where authenticity, detail, and craftsmanship were essential. The atelier’s contribution to Maltese craft has also earned recognition through awards connected to the Malta Crafts Foundation, the national organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting local artisanal heritage. In 2023, Captain’s Cut received the Endangered Craft Award, recognising the importance of safeguarding traditional skills for future generations. In 2024, Keith John Caruana further distinguished himself by winning the textile section with the female armour corset Arma Tura while also receiving the Emerging Makers Award. These achievements reinforce Captain’s Cut as a brand actively contributing to the 092

renewal and evolution of craft culture in Malta. The creative journey later expanded into fashion design, with Keith John Caruana producing three entirely handcrafted collections for Malta Fashion Week in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Designed in collaboration with stylist Linda Boranga, known as La Stylist from Perugia, Italy, the collections transformed leather into a full fashion expression that resonated strongly with local fashion enthusiasts and influencers alike. The collections also attracted international press attention from Italy to Canada, while the brand itself received coverage from Monocle, further positioning Captain’s Cut within a wider international conversation surrounding design, craftsmanship, and style. Beyond recognition and acclaim, sustainability remains central to the philosophy behind Captain’s Cut. Working exclusively with full grain vegetable tanned leather, the atelier approaches every material with deep respect and responsibility. This awareness drives the team to minimise waste, use every possible part of the leather, and create objects designed for longevity rather than replacement. Each piece reflects a commitment to integrity, functionality,

and timeless elegance over short lived trends. That philosophy is visible across the atelier’s diverse range of handcrafted products. Alongside its signature belts, Captain’s Cut creates dog collars, journals, card holders, camera straps, passport holders, backpacks, women’s handbags, and corsets, each crafted using the same premium full grain leather and dedication to enduring quality. These are objects intended not simply to be owned, but to accompany their owners through years of travel, memory, and daily life, becoming more beautiful with age and use. The brand’s belts in particular remain one of its defining expressions of craftsmanship. Belts and dog collars can often be completed while customers wait, with much of the preparation carried out overnight before the final measuring, finishing, and detailing take place in front of the customer. This rare process allows visitors to witness the final stages of handmade craftsmanship in real time, transforming a practical accessory into a deeply personal experience. >>

WHERE SUMMER COMES ALIVE

A

s the sun sets over Naxxar and the gardens begin to glow, Palazzo Parisio takes on a character all of its own. The pace slows, conversations linger and music drifts through centuries-old grounds that have welcomed guests for generations. This summer, a carefully curated calendar of dining experiences, live entertainment and wine events promises evenings that are as memorable as the setting itself. There is a particular pleasure in having somewhere to be on a warm evening. A reason to put on something nice and walk through a gate that has been welcoming visitors since 1906.

INBØUND

At Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar, summer has a rhythm. Wednesday evenings belong to Gin & Jam: live music, botanical spirits, and easy conversations that happen when the gardens are lit and nobody is in a hurry to go home. It began as an experiment, and it has since become a fixture people actually look forward to.

Bistro & Beats moves faster, plays louder, and asks very little of you except that you arrive with an appetite and reasonable footwear. The gardens in full summer, with music bouncing off century-old stone walls, are an experience that is genuinely difficult to replicate anywhere else on the island.

Thursdays and Fridays run to a different tempo. Jazz & Dine is exactly what it sounds like - candlelit tables, live jazz, and a kitchen that takes the food as seriously as the music. Chef David Giacomelli’s menu shifts with the season, and in summer that means dishes that are lighter, brighter, and built for long evenings. Order the fish. Order the pasta. Order both and let someone else drive.

Once a month, the focus turns to wine. The Wine Pairing evenings, led by Andrew Azzopardi of Vintage ‘82, are unhurried affairs - a curated selection of bottles chosen to work with whatever David has been planning in the kitchen. These evenings tend to sell out, which is a reliable indicator that people who attend once tend to come back. >>

The setting is what brings the real magic. The gardens at Palazzo Parisio cover just over one acre and have been tended continuously for more than 120 years. There are olive trees planted by the knights, stone fountains that have been running since before anyone alive can remember, and a general atmosphere that resists being hurried. People arrive for an event and find themselves still there, quite contentedly, an hour after they expected to leave. The full summer calendar is live, tables fill quickly, and some evenings are already close to capacity. The reservations page is at palazzoparisio.com. We would love to see you this summer. Ø

he second edition of the Malta Biennale came to a close yesterday evening, during a ceremony that was held at Fort St Elmo, in Valletta.

Under the artistic direction of Sean Buhagiar, the closing ceremony featured a live orchestra, with a five-piece repertoire by Cher Camilleri and Michael Azzopardi, juxtaposed by speeches by Heritage Malta (HM) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Noel Zammit, Malta Biennale 2026 President and HM Chairman, Mario Cutajar, and H.E. the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono. During the closing ceremony, the last Maltese Falcon Award recipient was also announced – the winner of the People’s Choice award being Halil Altindere, whose works Star Wars: Knights

of Malta vs Ottoman Drones (2026) and Star Wars: Royal Hunt (2023) were on show at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta. HM CEO, Noel Zammit, said that throughout this edition of the Malta Biennale, visitors to Heritage Malta’s sites and museums discovered Malta’s historical heritage through a new lens – that of contemporary art. This was made possible not only through the artworks themselves, but also through the series of activities organised in parallel with the Biennale. “We are closing this second edition of the Malta Biennale with a sense of pride, but also with a sense of anticipation. The Biennale has planted a seed that will grow into a strong tree with farreaching roots. It will continue to inspire, it will continue to provoke thought, and it will continue to

strengthen Malta’s cultural sector long after this evening has passed,” Mr Zammit said. During his speech, Malta Biennale President, Mario Cutajar explained how, “Thesecond edition of the Malta Biennale is, in my view, the cornerstone of future editions, just as the first edition constituted our building blocks and foundation. The greater success achieved through this edition highlights the relevance of the Biennale both for HM as well as our country. For HM, the Biennale is one of the agency’s most effective tools in achieving a renewed vision for its museums and sites – making them more accessible and relevant – while for our country, the Biennale provides greater visibility to our heritage to both local and foreign audiences. >>

None of this would have been possible without the dedicated team behind the Malta Biennale and the committed HM employees who worked tirelessly from one project to the next,”Mr Cutajar said. H.E. Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, said that throughout these past weeks, Malta Biennale 2026 transformed the country into an open space for creativity, dialogue and reflection, while once again demonstrating the power of art to connect people and give voice to diverse realities and experiences. The President remarked that the Biennale went beyond being an exhibition of artistic works, becoming a living platform where contemporary creativity engaged meaningfully with Malta’s cultural heritage and historical spaces. She also highlighted how “this edition continued to strengthen Malta’s international reputation

as a centre for contemporary art and cultural exchange, while encouraging critical thought, inclusion, and wider participation in culture, particularly among younger generations.” The President concluded by expressing hope that the Biennale will continue to inspire new ideas, foster positive change, and strengthen the role of culture at the heart of society. The Malta Biennale 2026 unfolded across 11 weeks with an international exhibition together with national and thematic pavilions hosted in 11 Heritage Malta historic sites and museums in Valletta, Vittoriosa (Malta), and Xagħra and Victoria (Gozo). With over 130 artists participating from more than 50 countries, the Biennale also included a strong public programme of events for audiences of all ages, which comprised satellite events, artist-led activities, performances in public spaces, handson workshops, and more. Titled Clean | Clear | Cut, the international exhibition was curated by acclaimed artistic director Rosa Martínez. During the Biennale,

HM sites and museums were activated through the dialogue created between contemporary art and cultural heritage, and through the marriage of past and present. The full schedule of exhibitions, participating artists, pavilions and events in the public programme can be viewed on maltabiennale. art. The official guidebook of the Malta Biennale 2026 can be downloaded for free from the website, and the catalogue can be purchased online or at one of the 11 sites in which the Malta Biennale took place. The Malta Biennale was organised by Heritage Malta in partnership with Arts Council Malta, Visit Malta, the Valletta Cultural Agency, and Public Broadcasting Services. The Malta Biennale was also held in full collaboration with the Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, and the Ministry for Gozo and Planning. The menu celebrates Mediterranean traditions and seasonal ingredients — from fresh salads and homemade ravioli to evening plates paired with wines from the family’s own celebrated collection, Ellul Wines & Spirits, established in 1878. Warm, unpretentious, and quietly accomplished, it is the kind of place that feels equally right for a light weekday lunch or a long, unhurried dinner with good company and a well-chosen bottle.

MAMACHI

SAN GIULIANO

PALAZZO PARISIO

Located at Portomaso Marina in St Julian’s, Mamachi brings one of the world’s most exciting culinary fusions to Malta, Nikkei, the celebrated marriage of Japanese precision and Peruvian fire. The menu is built for sharing, with standout dishes including wagyu tacos, tuna tataki, and signature sushi rolls, all crafted with flair and meticulous attention to detail. Beyond the food, Mamachi delivers a full sensory experience, bold cocktails, striking interiors, and an electric atmosphere that evolves from refined dining destination into a vibrant late-night hotspot as the evening progresses.

Set in a beautifully converted boathouse on the waterfront of Spinola Bay, built by the Knights of Malta over 300 years ago and illuminated magnificently at night, San Giuliano is one of St Julian’s most iconic dining addresses. The kitchen is rooted in Italian tradition, with expert chefs preparing fresh pasta, antipasti, and meat dishes alongside the restaurant’s greatest calling card, fresh fish brought in daily by fishermen who moor their boats just metres from the restaurant. Romantic, timeless, and impossible to walk past without stopping.

Nestled in the heart of Naxxar, Palazzo Parisio is one of Malta’s most breathtaking destinations for fine dining and elegant occasions. Set within a beautifully restored 19th-century palazzo and surrounded by immaculate formal gardens, the venue offers a truly unique experience that moves effortlessly between intimate lunches, afternoon teas, celebratory dinners, and exclusive events. Under the direction of Executive Chef David Giacomelli, the kitchen celebrates seasonal ingredients and refined Mediterranean flavours. Whether you are visiting for the food, the gardens, or simply a moment of pure elegance, Palazzo Parisio never disappoints.

CULTURE

The Silent City Has Something to Say...

T

here is a moment, usually just after you pass through the main gate, when you expect the noise of the modern world to disappear. In postcards and travel guides, it always does. The cars stop. The crowds thin. The narrow limestone streets absorb the sound of your footsteps and return nothing. In reality, in the height of a Maltese summer, Mdina — the ancient walled capital perched on a hilltop at the very centre of the island — can feel rather less like a sanctuary and rather more like the most beautiful bottleneck you have ever stood in. Tour groups file through the main gate in steady procession. The restaurants fill by noon. The carriages clatter across the stone. And yet, somehow, even through all of it, the city holds its character. You feel it in the walls themselves, in the weight of the limestone, in the way the streets twist and narrow and force you to slow down whether you want to or not. Come early enough in the morning, or linger past the hour when the last coaches pull away, and you will find it — that silence the city is named for, real and absolute and worth every moment of waiting. Mdina’s origins stretch back to around 2000 BC, when the island’s earliest settlers recognised the strategic brilliance of this hilltop position. From its limestone bastions, you can see virtually the entire island — the harbours to the east, the farmland rolling south, the sea glittering in

every direction. The Romans called it Melita and made it the capital of their island province. The Arabs, who arrived in 870 AD, gave it the name it carries to this day — Mdina, from the Arabic word for city. They also gave it its characteristic winding street plan, a deliberate labyrinth designed to confuse invaders and slow their progress through the city’s arteries. Walking those same streets today, with a gelato in hand and a selfie stick narrowly avoided, it still works. It was the Knights of St John who reshaped the city most dramatically, arriving in Malta in 1530 and fortifying the island against Ottoman aggression. Though they eventually made Valletta their capital after the Great Siege of 1565, it was Mdina that formed the backbone of Maltese resistance during those bloody months. The Cathedral of Saint Paul, rebuilt in the Baroque style after an earthquake destroyed the earlier Norman structure in 1693, remains the spiritual heart of the city and one of the finest churches on the island. Step inside and the contrast with the chaos outside is immediate — all gilded columns and painted ceilings and the particular hush that old sacred spaces impose on even the most restless visitor. What makes Mdina remarkable is not that it has escaped the modern world entirely — it hasn’t, and in summer it makes no pretence of doing so. What is remarkable is that it has refused

to be defined by it. Its permanent population stands at just a few hundred, making it one of the smallest inhabited cities in the world. “The palaces of Malta’s old nobility line its streets, their carved doorways and iron balconies intact, a reminder that for the right families, Mdina was never just a place to visit — it was home.” There are no hotels within the walls. No supermarkets. Almost no commerce at all beyond a handful of restaurants and craft shops that operate quietly and without fuss. The city is not performing for the crowds that pass through it each summer. It is simply waiting for them to leave. And they do leave. By early evening, the tour groups are gone. The carriages are stabled. The gate falls quiet. The light turns gold over the bastions and the city exhales, slowly, like something returning to itself. It is in those hours that Mdina reveals what it has always been — not a tourist attraction, not a film set, not a footnote in a history book, but a living place with its own rhythm, its own rules, and four thousand years of practice at outlasting whatever arrives at its gates. The Knights called it Città Notabile — the Notable City. The locals call it Il-Belt Skiet — the Silent City. In July, you might argue with the second name. By eight o’clock in the evening, you will not. Ø
