WELCOME BACK 21 Dear Viking Student, Welcome to the 2021–2022 academic year!

Whether you are returning to Salem State or joining us for your first year, we are excited that you are part of the Viking community. Welcome!

We begin the fall semester recognizing that all of us are different than we were before the pandemic. Most of you are either beginning or continuing your journey as a Viking after spending the last academic year learning and socializing remotely. I know this has been challenging and is likely not what you envisioned when you thought about what either your final year of high school or a year of college would look like. But you persevered, and you are here. You inspire me.

As we continue to adapt to the changing circumstances of COVID-19, it is my hope that we do so with a kindness toward one another, and toward ourselves. Please know that our faculty, staff, and administrators, including myself, are here for you.

We want you to succeed. Please draw on our expertise and utilize the resources available to you as a Salem State student, many of which are featured in this publication, to support you in your academic journey.

Please also draw support from one another. Help each other. Learn from each other.

I encourage you to be engaged with our campus and to seek out new opportunities to learn from those who have different backgrounds, opinions, and experiences than you. Start a conversation with someone that you don’t know. Listen to them as they tell you who they are. Actively create the community you want to see.

Dear Vikings: Welcome and welcome back! As the Vice President of Student Success and a double Viking who earned two degrees from SSU, I am excited for the start of another new academic year.

While we eagerly look forward to your arrival on campus, the safety and continued academic success of our campus and community remains our priority. We appreciate your efforts to keep yourself, your fellow Vikings, and our community safe. As we’ve shared, all Salem State students are required to be fully immunized against COVID-19 before returning to campus for the fall semester. This expectation includes undergraduate and graduate students who are attending inperson classes, conducting research on campus, living in residence halls, or participating in campus life activities. The university actively monitors conditions and will communicate if additional measures are required to maintain the health and safety of the community. The Student Success division supports and engages you from enrollment through graduation and beyond. When 2021 Viking graduates were asked about their SSU experience, overwhelming majorities said that Salem State contributed “very much” or “quite a bit” to their: •

GUIDE FOR ON-CAMPUS SAFETY DURING COVID-19

All employees are expected to be vaccinated by the start of the fall semester. Being vaccinated will protect you and the community as we return to campus in the fall. We are looking forward to being safely together again.

COVID-19 Vaccination

To be fully vaccinated by August 27, you should receive your first dose on or before the following dates: •

Moderna: July 16

•

Pfizer: July 23

•

Johnson & Johnson: August 13

All Salem State students are required to be fully immunized against COVID-19 before returning to campus for the fall semester.

This includes undergraduate and graduate students who are attending in-person classes, conducting research on campus, living in residence halls, or participating in campus life activities.

The vaccination rate in the city of Salem is above 72% for eligible individuals, and more than 4.5 million adults in Massachusetts have been vaccinated (61% of the population).

Students are expected to be vaccinated prior to returning to campus unless they apply for and receive an exemption. The exemption process is located on the student health portal.

The laws in the Commonwealth related to immunizations allow for medical and/or religious exemptions and as such, are also allowed for the COVID-19 vaccine requirement.

Students claiming a medical exemption must present documentation from a medical provider stating that the vaccine is contraindicated and upload the documentation to the health portal. Students who are seeking a religious exemption should complete and upload the religious exemption form on the health portal.

Students who receive exemptions and are not vaccinated will be expected to follow current CDC and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health guidelines including wearing face coverings indoors and will be required to participate in regular COVID-19 surveillance testing during the fall semester, to obtain a Cleared CoVerified badge and be allowed to participate in oncampus, in-person activities and classes. Students who are not in compliance will be referred to community standards.

We strongly encourage all community members to get vaccinated as soon as possible in an effort to protect themselves and the community.

Regular Vaccinations All full-time students, health science students, residential students, and international students must still submit traditional immunization documents to the health portal. Please visit the health portal or salemstate.edu/chs/new for the health form and traditional immunization requirements.

Please note that remote students who are full time, health science, residential, or international students must still meet traditional immunization requirements and should also submit this documentation on their health portal prior to the start of the semester. Failure to do so may result in a registration hold being placed on your student account.

Masks

Students should upload their immunization documentation or complete the exemption process in the health portal as soon as possible.

Given the recent increase in COVID-19 cases due to the spread of the delta variant, effective August 5, Salem State is reinstating an indoor mask mandate for all community members (students, employees, guests) regardless of vaccination status. Masks are required in all indoor public spaces, and are recommended in outdoor locations if individuals are not able to socially distance.

Students who will be entirely remote are encouraged to submit their vaccine documentation but may also complete a remote status attestation form in their health portal to meet the COVID-19 vaccine requirement.

Masks will continue to be required for all individuals in counseling and health services, at the COVID-19 testing site, and in shared public transportation including the shuttle, per state and CDC guidelines.

Symptom Monitoring

Campus Visitors and Guests

We will continue to use CoVerified this summer and this fall to help ensure the safety of our community. A CLEARED CoVerified status indicates you have met the health and safety requirements for participation in oncampus activities. Any student or employee coming to campus should continue to use CoVerified to report their daily symptoms and access on-campus COVID-19 testing.

Students or employees should not come to campus if they are experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19 and have a RESTRICTED CoVerified badge. Students who have concerns about their health should contact counseling and health services and employees should contact human resources.

As of July 19, the campus is open to visitors and guests. This includes the Berry Library. Visitors to campus are no longer required to complete the attestation form. Hosts should continue to be responsible for taking attendance and making sure guests are aware and able to follow campus policies.

Residence life will be updating housing guest policies for the fall 2021.

COVID-19 Testing This fall residential students will be tested when they return to campus during movein and we will encourage all community members to access testing during the first weeks of the semester. Moving forward, unvaccinated individuals will be expected to be tested weekly to maintain a CLEARED CoVerified badge, and testing will be available to all community members who would like to get tested. Unvaccinated or exempted students who do not comply with testing will be referred to community standards and will be prevented from accessing on-campus, in-person services and activities.

Occupancy This fall, classrooms will be set up for three (3) square feet of physical distance (front to back and side to side) between students.

All indoor meeting spaces will be set up to not exceed 75% of typical occupancy. Room reservations have been adjusted accordingly. We are looking forward to having more in-person events and opportunities, but we want to make sure that events do not feel crowded, and people are able to physically distance if needed.

The COVID-19 response team leads will continue to monitor the situation and will communicate with the community if additional measures are required to maintain the health and safety of the community. Thank you for your efforts to keep yourself, your fellow Vikings, and our community safe.

Berry Library and Learning Commons The Frederick E. Berry Library and Learning Commons is a modern facility that offers a welcoming and comfortable learning environment. It houses various student services, as well as computer workstations, books, journals, media, and librarians and staff ready to help with your study and research needs.

Here are some of the top things to know about the library this year:

Library Access and Safety Precautions As long as in-person classes are meeting, the library will be open to all Salem State University students, faculty, and staff. Members of the public are also welcome. As of August 2021, masks are required inside all buildings on campus, including the library. Please be aware that campus COVID-19 protocols may change, necessitating changes in these conditions.

Library Hours of Operation Beginning September 2, 2021, Berry Library is open Monday through Thursday from 7:45 am to 9 pm, Friday from 7:45 to 5 pm, Saturday from Noon to 5 pm, and Sunday from Noon to 7 pm.

Hours may be reduced or extended as COVID-19 protocols allow. Hours on holidays may vary. The lobby of the learning commons building is remains open until mid-night most evenings and is open on weekend mornings at 9 am. For the most up-to-date hours of operation of the library and the learning commons, go to salemstate. edu/library/hours or call the recorded hours line at 978.542.6808.

E-Books, E-Journals, and Online Research Consultations Library materials are available virtually 24 hours a day 7 days a week and during open hours of operation. Go to salemstate.edu/library to search for

e-books, articles in databases, and research guides for subject-specific help. Print books may be requested online via the NOBLE library catalog and picked up within 7 days of notification at the library entrance.

If you have a question, you may put in a library service desk ticket. For more extensive research assistance, contact a subject librarian directly to receive help over email or phone, or to make an appointment for an online or in-person research consultation.

WiFi and Computer Access The library has strong WiFi access throughout the 4 floors of the building.

All tables have embedded outlets to easily keep your laptop powered up. If you don’t have a laptop, there are desktop computers throughout the building. Please sanitize your workstation both before and after use. Disinfectant stations (disinfectant spray and paper towels) can be found on each floor.

Reserve a Group Study Room Online The library has 11 individual study rooms that you can reserve online at salemstate.edu/ library. All study rooms are restricted to no more than 2 people at all times.

Reservations can

be made up to one week in advance and rooms may be reserved for up to two hours at a time (four half-hour time slots). Each room has a powered conference table, 2 chairs, whiteboard walls, and a flat-screen display with Apple T V and HMDI connections.

Make your reservation online and then come to the Library Help Desk on the first floor to check out the key-card at the time you have reserved. These rooms may also be used by individuals needing a quiet place to use reliable WiFi to attend a class being held over Zoom.

Special Study Areas The library has three special use study rooms for family study, a community study room, and a meditation room on the 2nd floor. The meditation room is accessible by ClipperCard and keys for the other rooms are kept at the Library Help Desk. The library also has a comfortable, 2-person lounge area called the IDEA Den on the first floor which usually has a small rotating collection of browsable books on multiculturalism, diversity, inclusion, and social justice.

Meet Your Major Mandatory event for all first-year and new transfer students New first-year and new transfer students will meet with their academic department virtually as part of the annual Meet Your Major event.

This mandatory event for all new students is an opportunity to: • Introduce students to the faculty within the department • Review the curriculum requirements, recommendations, and opportunities so that students understand the path to graduation • Identify the faculty advisors for each student and overview the process for contacting and meeting with them • Discuss major-specific information like minors, concentrations, internships, and more • Hear from upper-class students within the major • Learn about upcoming events, activities, student organizations, resources, and other department-specific initiatives or opportunities that students will want to take advantage of to help complement their academic experience WELCOME BACK • 6

Zoom information will be emailed and posted on the Class of 2025 FB page to new first-year and transfer students in early September.

Meet Your Major occurs for all majors from 11 am–12 pm in (Zoom information will be sent via email and posted on the Class of 2025). Students should note that: • If you are currently double-majoring, you should choose one of the majors to attend and follow up with the department afterward to gather information for the other major • Education majors will meet with their second major/interest area from 11 am–12 pm and then meet from 12–1 pm with the School of Education (see below for specifics) • Exploratory Program students have a special meeting from 11 am–12 pm. If an Exploratory student is (1) sure of their intended major, and (2) sure that they will be accepted to that major they can attend that major's session.

Otherwise, all Exploratory students should attend the Exploratory Program session. If you have questions, contact FYE at firstyear@ salemstate.edu for advice on which session to attend.

Education Majors Education majors will follow the information outlined below in selecting which session to attend from 11 am–12 pm session. From 12–1 pm, education majors will meet separately with the School of Education.

MORE NEWS FROM THE FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE! STUDENT SUCCESS SERIES All students are invited to take advantage of the fall student success series, a schedule of workshops designed to support both first-year and returning students in achieving their college goals. On September 1, students will be able to access the workshop schedule in the “Compass” Canvas page to determine which workshop topics they want to attend—from study strategies to utilizing Zoom to enhancing your note-taking skills, from time management tips to discovering the best apps to support your goals these workshops are quick and easy ways to begin enhancing your success skills. This is YOUR opportunity to take control of your grades!

CAREER PREPARATION WORKSHOPS It's never too early to begin planning for your dream career, in fact studies show that students who engage with career planning during their first semester in college are more likely to achieve their goals. First-year students and new transfers will attend one of four, hour long sessions this fall designed to get you on track to achieve your goals. MAJOR/MINOR WEEK OCTOBER 4 – 8 Are you thinking about changing or declaring a major? Want to learn how a minor can help make you a stronger candidate for your dream job? This year's online Major/Minor Week will feature sessions where you can speak with departments about their majors and minors: get advice from current students, talk with advisors about how this will impact your progression, learn how study abroad can fit into your plans, formally declare a major/minor, and more.

Add/Drop Registration The day school add/drop period runs from Thursday, September 2 through Thursday, September 9. You may rearrange your schedule by adding or dropping courses via Navigator. Dropping an Undergraduate Day class after September 9 will result in a class withdrawal grade of W. For evening courses through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the deadline to drop is Friday, September 3, two days after the class start date. If you need assistance adjusting your schedule, professional academic advisors in the Center for Academic Excellence will be available for drop-ins via Zoom, beginning August 23. Student Accounts Your tuition bills are accessible online through Navigator in the Financial Account tile. For instructions on how to access your bill, make your payments online, establish a monthly payment plan, setup e-refunds to be direct deposited into your checking or savings account, and to set up authorized users to view and pay your bill, please visit Ask the Viking salemstate.edu/ask. Please note: we do not mail out paper bills; students will receive a notification via your Salem State email so please check your Salem State email regularly.

Peer Tutoring helps you become a more independent, self-confident, and efficient learner so that you are better prepared to meet the academic rigors of college. Peer Tutoring is a free service provided to all Salem State University undergraduate students if a tutor is available in a particular course. We anticipate offering both on-campus and online tutoring appointments for this academic year.

Text and video instructions are available at salemstate. edu/tutoring and students are encouraged to complete the learning agreement so they understand what to expect from a peer tutoring session. Students must make appointments in advance through Navigate. Contact Megan Penyack with any questions regarding the Peer Tutoring program: mpenyack@ salemstate.edu; salemstate.edu/tutoring.

Faculty Advisor Students’ primary advisor is a faculty member who will be assigned to them by mid-September. An email will be sent to students with that information. Students will need to meet with their faculty advisor during the advising period from October 14 through November 3, prior to registering for Spring semester classes.

Book Advances A book advance is issued as an advance from your refund, where the student’s total anticipated financial aid award for the semester is greater than their total semester balance.

Individuals who are eligible can receive up to a $600 book advance. To view eligibility, students should log into their navigator account and choose Bookstore Advance Lookup under the Financial Aid tile.

Health Insurance Health insurance coverage is mandatory for both undergraduate and graduate students registered for at least 75% of a full course load. The university offers a health insurance plan. You must either enroll in this plan or waive out of it by showing proof of your own comparable insurance.

Graduating this Year?

Don’t Forget to Apply!

Applications for graduation are now open for fall 2021 in Navigator, and will be open for spring and summer 2022 on September 1, 2021. Applications for students completing this fall are due on October 15, and we also strongly encourage all students planning on graduating in May or August 2022 to submit applications as soon as possible in the fall semester. If you apply in September or October for May or August, you will receive a review of your remaining requirements so you can stay on track for the spring semester. Log into your Navigator account and click on “Apply for Graduation” under the Academic Progress tile to complete your application. Be sure to review your degree tracker report and visit the advising office in the Berry Library and Learning Commons with any questions you may have. Center for Academic Excellence The Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) helps students achieve academic success by providing a variety of academic services. These academic services include advising, tutoring, mentoring, supplemental instruction, and collaborating with other departments to ensure that students have the appropriate academic supports to be successful at Salem State. The Center for Academic Excellence is located on the first floor of the Berry Library and Learning Commons.

Here are some key academic resources available to all students:

Professional Academic Advisors We would like to remind students that Academic Advising is located within the Center for Academic Excellence on the first floor of the Berry Library and Learning Commons. In an effort to best serve our students and establish advising relationships, in addition to your faculty advisor from your major discipline, you have a professional academic advisor in the Center for Academic Excellence – students can make appointments throughout the year through the Navigate app.

Additionally, Advising Peer Mentors, students who are trained and supervised to assist undergraduate students navigate the university landscape; are available to meet with students in the Center for Academic Excellence. Through shared experiences, peer mentors are in a great position to provide support both academically and socially. Peer advisors assist in familiarizing students with the university’s core curriculum, majors and minors, as well as course selection/registration process.

Educational Records and Your Privacy The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) ensures the confidentiality of your education record and restricts the disclosure of your information to third parties, including your parents or other family members. If you want us to share any information about your educational record with your parents, you will need to complete a FERPA release via Navigator by clicking on the Profile tile>FERPA Waiver. Disability Services

ITS Assistance

Disability Services promotes an accessible educational and campus-wide experience by coordinating services and accommodations for students with disabilities.

Our staff works with students to provide appropriate accommodations in the classroom setting. In order to receive accommodations, students must register with the Disability Services office. Students may schedule an appointment to meet with an academic counselor via Zoom by emailing disability-services@salemstate.edu.

Information Technology Services (ITS) Assistance is available for all Salem State University students, applicants and alumni. The ITS Help Desk can now be contacted by a number of methods to better fit students’ schedules and preferences. Center for Civic Engagement The Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) sponsors programming designed to promote advocacy, activism, community involvement, social justice, and civic participation. Civic engagement is embedded in the fabric of what it means to be a Salem State Viking and is an important part of the student experience.

This fall the campus will be abuzz with opportunities to volunteer in the community, connect with nonprofit leaders, participate in workshops and events on social justice issues, and engage in political programming. We have an important election in the City of Salem this fall as we vote on local leadership, including our mayor and city councilors. The CCE’s Berry Institute of Politics will offer students the opportunity to register to vote and engage in debates and forums on contemporary political issues so they can make an informed decision and vote on Tuesday, November 2. This unique leadership opportunity consists of a small cohort of students who are committed to leading advocacy efforts on campus and in the community. This year we are hosting a Sophomore Service Saturday which is an opportunity for sophomores to reconnect to campus life and build connections with their peers and community leaders. This opportunity will be offered to 100 sophomores (residential and commuter) to spend the day engaging in one of several service projects that gives back to the North Shore community.

Parents and Family Council Join the Parents and Family Council! This group serves as a fun forum for parents to communicate ideas, questions and concerns to the university. The council is a sounding board for the university when planning family activities and programs. Our informal group meets monthly on Thursday evenings. The Parents Council also promotes several events throughout the year, where parents are invited to campus to attend free events with their students and/or to network with other parents. Center for Justice and Liberation Located in Room 202 in the Ellison Campus Center, the Center for Justice and Liberation supports students through our key core pillars – Social Justice, Liberation, Advocacy & Resources, and Academic Enrichment. Bystander Intervention The Vikings CARE Bystander Intervention Program called “Step Up!” This program involves learning how to be an active bystander and speaking out/stepping up when you see or hear something that is problematic, such as a fight between a couple, helping a friend who has had too much to drink, confronting someone who uses racist language, and much more. Prosocial bystander behaviors can be used for all types of scenarios, including gender-based violence, bias/ discrimination, hazing and bullying, alcohol and other drugs, disordered eating, and more. It also means looking out for one another and being a good community member, which includes wearing a mask in public, physical distancing, and following all public health guidelines to protect others during a pandemic. Food Pantry More than 30% of college students in the U.S. face financial challenges at times that may include worrying about having enough to eat. Here at Salem State, we want our students to be able to focus on their academic success without the burden of food insecurity. The Salem State University Food Pantry exists to serve students who may need such assistance by providing a variety of non-perishable foods as well as toiletries and hygiene products. The Pantry is located on the first floor of the Ellison Campus Center next to the office of Counseling and Health Services, and is open Monday–Friday from 7:30 am–10 pm.

Student Government Association The Salem State Student Government Association is the official governing body for the student body and the primary voice for students. We are elected by the students and exist for the students. SGA meets as a general body each Tuesday at 4:30 pm in the MLK Room in the Ellison Campus Center. All students are welcome to come and make their voices heard, or simply observe how a meeting runs!

We have five committees that SGA Senators and any Salem State student may serve on: Civic Engagement, Sustainability, and Community Service; Finance; Rules; Social Justice and Inclusion; and Public Relations. These committees work throughout the academic year on issues pertinent to their mission and goals.

The Harold E. and Marilyn J. Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center, which opened in November 2013, is a fully-equipped fitness center providing top-tier cardio, strength, and functional training equipment, locker rooms, recreational courts, and a studio for group exercise classes and other activities.

Membership Membership is covered by student fees. In order to participate, you will need to complete the online Gassett Fitness Center Registration Form/Facility Access Waiver on the Fusion Web Portal (gassettfitnesscenter.salemstate.edu/).

Career Services supports the career and professional development of Salem State students so they can successfully navigate their internship, job, and graduate school search process with confidence.

Career Services offers one-on-one career counseling appointments, employer engagement support, recruiting events, workshops on various career and leadership related topics such as resume reviews, job and internship search process support, career readiness support, and career fairs. This academic year, the Career Services team will provide services remotely and in-person to meet the needs of our student population.

The Chosen Name policy applies to internal university documents such as class rosters, Clipper Card, and Canvas. Students are able to select and change their chosen name in Navigator.
