Dear Salem State Students, Welcome to the 2019-2020 Academic Year! As you think about your goals for the year ahead and into the future, please remember that our faculty, staff and administrators are here to guide you in any way that we can.

I hope you will take advantage of the many resources we offer on our campus, and please know that I can be a resource for you as well. I encourage you to visit during my open office hours and say hello when you see me around campus.

Hearing from students is my favorite part of serving as Salem State’s president, and it is crucial to the work that I do.

At Salem State, we take great pride in being your choice institution as you seek to learn, grow, create and lead. I encourage all of you to get involved in our campus community – whether volunteering through our Center for Civic Engagement, joining one of our many student clubs and organizations, participating in intramurals or club sports, applying for student employment or studying abroad.

Many of our students have already exercised their leadership skills by weighing in on how we can best serve them. This year alone, student voices have led us to unveil a new dining experience that will include 24/7 dining in Marsh Dining Commons, add premium singles for upper-class students in Bowditch Hall and introduce new sustainable commuting options.

The LEAD staff will also create opportunities for the campus community to explore critical issues through authentic dialogues regarding race, class, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and nationality.

The Salem State Student Government Association is the official governing body for the student body and the primary voice for students. We are elected by the students and exist for the students. SGA meets as a general body each Tuesday at 4:30 pm in the MLK Room in the Ellison Campus Center. All students are welcome to come and make their voices heard, or simply observe how a meeting runs!

Conscious Kickbacks Join the LEAD office monthly as we discuss current issues, popular culture, personal experiences and so much more.

Each “Conscious Kickback” will serve as an informal space to talk about many topics without the structure of a classroom or presentation. Some examples of past conversations are: “You’re Cancelled: Where do we draw the line?” and “21 Savage, Government Shutdowns, and the Building of a Wall: Discussing Immigration in the U.S.” Please join in on the conversation!

Fraternity and Sorority Life Fraternities and Sororities are values-based organizations that work to live the values of their founders and uphold the Salem State fraternity and sorority pillars of excellence: service and philanthropy, scholarship, community, and leadership. Food Pantry More than 30% of college students in the U.S. face financial challenges. At times that may include worrying about having enough to eat. Here at Salem State, we want our students to be able to focus on their academic success without the burden of food insecurity. The Salem State University Food Pantry exists to serve students who may need such assistance by providing a variety of non-perishable foods as well as toiletries and hygiene products. The Pantry is located on the first floor of the Ellison Campus Center next to the office of Counseling and Health Services, and is open Monday-Friday from 7:30 am-10 pm . Berry Library and Learning Commons The Frederick E. Berry Library and Learning Commons is a modern facility that offers a welcoming and comfortable learning environment. It houses various student services, as well as computer workstations, books, journals, media, and librarians and staff ready to help with your study and research needs. Here are some of the top things to know about the library:

Library Hours

Study areas in Berry Library and the Library Help Desk are open nearly 100 hours a week during the semester.

The Library is open most nights until 12 midnight, with extended hours leading up to final exams. For the schedule of hours and the most up-to-date information, go to salemstate.edu/library/hours or call the recorded hours line at 978.542.6808.

Reserve a Group Study Room Online

The library has 11 group study rooms that you can reserve online at salemstate.edu/library. Reservations can be made up to one week in advance and rooms may be reserved for up to two hours at a time (four half-hour time slots). Each room has a powered conference table with six to eight seats, whiteboard walls with markers, and a flatscreen display with Apple TV and HMDI connections. Make your reservation online and then come to the Library Help Desk on the first floor to check out the key at the time you have reserved.

Special Use Rooms In addition to the group study rooms, the Library now has a room for family study, a community study room, and a meditation room on the 2nd floor. The meditation room is accessible by ClipperCard. Ask at the Help Desk for keys to the other rooms.

Phone and Device Charging Stations

The library has two cell phone charging stations. Each station has multiple types of connectors for standard devices, such as iPhones and androids. Both stations are on the first floor, near the comfortable seating by the new books and periodicals. Stop by, read a magazine, check out the new books, and charge your phone all at the same time.

New Reading Area

This fall the Library is inaugurating a comfortable lounge area in the first floor lobby with a small rotating collection of books on multiculturalism, diversity, inclusion, and social justice.

Both fiction and non-fiction books from the library’s print collection will be here waiting to be read. Throughout the year, the collection will change to reflect various themes.

Museum Passes

Did you know that Salem State students, faculty, and staff get free admission to the Peabody Essex Museum when they show their ClipperCard? And did you know that if you want to bring friends of family who do not have a ClipperCard, you can borrow a pass at the library that will get you free admission for up to two people? The library has four reusable passes; each pass admits two people and is due back to the library in 48 hours. To check out a pass, go to the Library Help Desk on the first floor. Salem State students, faculty, and staff also qualify for library privileges at Salem Public Library, which offers passes to several more museums and attractions, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Center for Civic Engagement

Staying healthy and preventing illness as you return or join campus can be as, if not more, important that treating illness. When you are on campus you will be closely interacting with new people from many different parts of the country and world, which will increase your risk for illness exposure. Please take this into consideration when making decisions for yourself on recommended vaccines. In addition to the required vaccines that should be submitted to health services for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, tetanus, and pertussis, health services encourages you to consider the benefits of recommended vaccines for the following illnesses: meningitis ACWY, meningitis B, flu, and HPV. For more information on why it is important to receive these vaccines and perform a self-assessment on what vaccines may be recommended for you, please visit: www.cdc.gov/vaccines/adults/reasons-tovaccinate.html or www2.cdc.gov/nip/adultimmsched/

The Center for Civic Engagement sponsors programming designed to promote advocacy, activism, community involvement, social justice, and civic participation. Civic Engagement is embedded in the fabric of what it means to be a Salem State Viking and is an important part of the student experience.

Health services can provide required and optional vaccines to eligible students and will also have walk-in, free flu clinics every Tuesday from 4-5pm, starting 09/17 in Ellison Campus center 107. To make an appointment with a health services clinician, please visit your health services portal at chsportal.salemstate.edu or call 978-542-6410.

Our team of medical providers are happy to discuss vaccines and vaccine preventable illnesses, in addition to the other services we provide to students for illness, injury, and reproductive health (birth control, STI testing and treatment, HIV prevention, cervical and breast cancer screenings, etc).

This fall kicks off a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment – a women’s right to vote. The year will feature Advocacy Day on Monday, November 25 and a host of engaging Election 2019/2020 programming during both semesters. Students will have the opportunity to register to vote and participate in social activities such as debate watch parties, as well as films and forums to learn about contemporary political issues and get excited to vote on Tuesday, November 5 and in the Presidential Primary on Tuesday, March 3.

The Harold E. and Marilyn J. Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center, which opened in November 2013, is a fully-equipped fitness center providing top-tier cardio, strength and functional training equipment locker rooms, recreational courts and a studio for group exercise classes and other activities. The Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center offers intramural and club sport opportunities for interested students. The intramural program provides individual and team activities as well as tournaments and special events. Current recognized Club Sports include Cheerleading, Dance, Lacrosse, Rugby and Ultimate Frisbee.

Membership Membership is covered by student fees. Admittance is granted upon successful completion of the registration form at your first visit and presentation of a valid ClipperCard.

• Salem Train Depot connects you to Boston’s North Station, the Newburyport/Rockport rail line and the entire T system.

• SSU Shuttles run between campuses during the day.

The student-run shuttle hits the malls and Market Basket in the evenings and on weekends.

• E-scooters are available to rent throughout the City of Salem. Please don’t ride on sidewalks and be sure to park your scooter in a designated scooter parking spot. Please wear a helmet.

Mandatory First-Year Events Tuesday, September 3 Opening Day: Convocation and First Year Reading Experience 10:30 am-3 pm This is the official start to a first-year student’s college experience and includes a number of formal and informal events like the President’s welcome, a picnic lunch, and discussion groups with faculty, and an ice cream social. All first-year students are expected to attend each event.

Meet Your Major

Monday, September 16 11 am-1 pm Students will meet with their academic departments to find out/meet their faculty advisor, discuss their academic major requirements, learn about internships, academic student groups, and more!

This formal meeting is the first opportunity students will have to speak directly with their chosen academic department.

(Undeclared students have a separate session to discuss choosing a major). All first-year students are expected to attend this event.

Graduating this Year? Don’t Forget to Apply!

Add/Drop Registration The day school add/drop period runs from Wednesday September 4 through Tuesday September 10. You may rearrange your schedule by adding or dropping courses via Navigator. Dropping an undergraduate day class after September 10 will result in a class withdrawal grade of W. For evening courses through the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the deadline to drop is two days after the class start date. If you need assistance adjusting your schedule, academic advisors will be available for consultation on a walk-in basis in the Center for Academic Excellence on the first floor of the Library during the first week of the semester.

Faculty Advisor Students’ primary advisor is a faculty member who will be assigned to them by mid-September. An email will be sent to students with that information. Students will need to meet with their faculty advisor during the advising period from October 15 through November 4, prior to registering for Spring semester classes.

Don’t Forget to Apply! Applications for graduation are now open for fall 2019 in Navigator and will be open for spring and summer 2020 on September 1, 2019. Applications for students completing this fall are due on October 15, and we also strongly encourage all students planning on graduating in May or August 2020 to submit applications as soon as possible in the fall semester. If you apply in September or October for May or August, you will receive a review of your remaining requirements so you can stay on track for the spring semester.

Log into your Navigator account and click on the Academic Progress tile, then Apply for Graduation to complete your application. Be sure to review your degree tracker report and visit the advising office in the Berry Library and Learning Commons with any questions you may have. Student Accounts Your tuition bills are accessible online through Navigator in the Student Account tile. For instructions on how to access your bill, make your payments online, establish a monthly payment plan, setup e-refunds to be direct deposited into your checking or savings account, and to set up authorized users to view and pay your bill, please visit Ask the Viking salemstate.edu/ask. Please note: we do not mail out paper bills. Updated monthly e-bills are generated online, usually during the second week of the month, and you will receive a notification via your Salem State email so please check your Salem State email regularly.

Peer Tutors

Center for Academic Excellence The Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) helps students achieve academic success by providing a variety of academic services. These academic services include advising, tutoring, mentoring, supplemental instruction, and collaborating with other departments to ensure that students have the appropriate academic supports to be successful at Salem State. The Center for Academic Excellence is located on the first floor of the Berry Library and Learning Commons.

Academic Advisors

We would like to remind students that Academic Advising is located within the Center for Academic Excellence on the first floor of the Berry Library and Learning Commons. In an effort to best serve our students and establish advising relationships, in addition to your faculty advisor from your major discipline, you have an academic advisor in the Center for Academic Excellence. In addition, Advising Peer Mentors, students who are trained and supervised to assist undergraduate students navigate the university landscape, are available to meet with students in the Center for Academic Excellence. Through shared experiences, peer mentors are in a great position to provide support both academically and socially. Peer advisors assist in familiarizing students with the university’s core curriculum, majors and minors, as well as course selection/

How to request a FREE Peer Tutor Peer Tutoring help students become a more independent, self-confident, and efficient learners so that they are better prepared to meet the academic rigors of college.

Peer Tutoring is a free service provided to all Salem State University undergraduate students. Beginning in Fall 2019, many tutors will also offer online tutoring, in addition to face-to-face on-campus hours, in order to accommodate the diverse needs of our students. More information is available on the Peer Tutoring website. Students must sign up in advance for one-hour appointments using TutorTrac. See the “Request a peer tutor” link on your Navigator account.

Laptop Support salemstate.edu/sits 978.542.7110 All incoming students are required to have a laptop computer.

In conjunction with Salem State’s wireless network, a laptop computer allows students access to the university’s online services anywhere on campus. Information technology services (ITS) offers free walk-in laptop support for all current students in room 159 in the Classroom Building on Central Campus. Walk-in hours for laptop support are 9 am–8 pm , Monday through Thursday, and Friday 9 am–4 pm . Students are encouraged to stop in for help with wi-fi connectivity, virus remediation assistance, operating system issues, anti-virus and other software concerns, general troubleshooting, and other technology related questions.

Parents and Family Council Join the Parents and Family Council! This group serves as a fun forum for parents to communicate ideas, questions and concerns to the university. The council is a sounding board for the divisions of enrollment management, student life and institutional advancement when planning family activities and programs. Our informal group meets monthly on campus over dinner on Thursday evenings. The Parents Council also promotes several events throughout the year, where parents are invited to campus to attend free events with their students and/or to network with other parents.

We invite parents to join this group and/or participate in our parent activities throughout the year.

Disability Services

Disability Services promotes an accessible educational and campus-wide experience by coordinating services and accommodations for students with disabilities.

Our staff works with students to provide appropriate accommodations in the classroom setting. In order to receive accommodations, students must register with the Disability Services office. by Caryl Churchill, directed by Julie Kiernan A limited number of complimentary tickets are available for families who register online at salemstate.edu/family Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts December 7 at 7:30 pm When Top Girls, written by British playwright Caryl Churchill, first debuted it was a groundbreaking feminist play, winning an Obie Award in 1983. Thirty seven years later the play still resonates relevance as gender stereotypes and inequities have not vanished. The play opens as Marlene, having just received a promotion at work, throws herself a celebratory dinner party. In attendance are a cacophony of deceased female heroines come to wish her well inevitably sharing their own stories of plight and fight in the process. When Marlene returns to her reality in acts 2 and 3, her co-workers, family, and acquaintances are all reminiscent of these dinner guests.

Churchill’s witty dialogue leave the audience simultaneously laughing and gasping at the ridiculous horror of Marlene’s reality as a “Top Girl.”

What do volunteers do one day a week?

At Northeast Animal Shelter students can help care for animals.

At Haven from Hunger students help set up the dining room and prep for dinner at their food pantry.

At Boys & Girls Club students will help kids with homework and after-school activities.

At Lifebridge students can help sort and stock items in their thrift store.

Email service@salemstate.edu to sign up or for more information. Students who volunteer consistently during the semester are eligible to earn academic credit.

Training is required before volunteers can assist at the Northeast Animal Shelter.
