C OM M E NC E M E N T S PE A K E R A N D HONOR A RY DE G R E E R E C I PI E N T MONIQUE MORRIS, EdD AUTHOR AND SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOLAR Monique W. Morris, EdD is an award-winning author and social justice scholar with three decades of experience in the areas of education, civil rights, juvenile and criminal justice. Dr. Morris is the President/CEO of Grantmakers for Girls of Color, a philanthropic collaborative that supports a world in which all girls and young women of color are healthy, safe, thriving, and fully empowered to dream and shape their desired reality on their terms, while dismantling structural barriers created by racism, sexism and ageism and other forms of oppression that prevent their full participation in our country’s future. In May 2020, she launched the Love is Healing Fund, which has granted nearly $3 million to more than 140 organizations nationwide, and in September 2020, she co-founded the Black Girl Freedom Fund as part of the #1Billion4BlackGirls campaign calling for a $1 billion investment in Black girls over the next 10 years. Dr. Morris is an Executive Producer and co-writer of the documentary film, PUSHOUT: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, which is based upon two of her books, Sing A Rhythm, Dance A Blues: Education for the Liberation of Black and Brown Girls (The New Press, 2019) and Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools (The New Press, 2016). She is also the author of Black Stats: African Americans by the Numbers in the Twenty-First Century (The New Press, 2014), Too Beautiful for Words (MWM Books, 2012), and she worked with Kemba Smith on her book, Poster Child: The Kemba Smith Story (IBJ Book Publishing, 2011). Dr. Morris has written dozens of articles, book chapters, and other publications on social justice issues and lectured widely on research, policies, and practices associated with improving juvenile/criminal justice, educational, and socioeconomic conditions for girls and women of color. Her 2018 TED talk on how to stop the criminalization of Black girls in schools has received more than 1.8 million views and been translated into 18 languages. Dr. Morris is the Founder of the National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI), an organization that works to interrupt school-to-confinement pathways for girls, reduce the barriers to employment for formerly incarcerated women, and increase the capacity of organizations working to reduce sexual assault and domestic violence in African American communities. She served as an adjunct associate professor for Saint Mary’s College of California between 2013-2018 and has taught at the University of San Francisco and California State University, Sacramento. Dr. Morris is a 2012 Soros Justice Fellow, the former Vice President for Economic Programs, Advocacy and Research at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the former Director of Research for the Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice at the UC Berkeley Law School. She has also worked in partnership with and served as a consultant for federal, state and county agencies, national academic and research institutions, and communities throughout the nation to develop research, comprehensive approaches and training curricula to eliminate racial/ethnic and gender disparities in justice and educational systems. Her work in this area has informed the development and implementation of improved culturally competent and gender-responsive continua of services for youth. Dr. Morris’ work has been profiled by MSNBC, CSPAN2, The Washington Post, The New York Times, NPR, and PBS, among other national and local print, radio, and television media. Her research intersects race, gender, education and justice to explore the ways in which Black communities, and other communities of color, are uniquely affected by social policies. She also frequently lectures on the life and legacy of the artist Prince.

ACA DE M IC DE G R E E S A N D DR E S S Academic degrees have been awarded for centuries. The University of al-Karaouine, founded in 859 in Fez, Morocco, is considered the world’s oldest continuously operating, degree granting university, while Italy’s University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is the first known to have awarded a doctorate (from the Latin docere, to teach). The University of Paris was founded shortly before 1100, followed closely by Oxford University. A dispute between Oxford students and the townspeople of Oxford led academics to leave the university in 1209, and found Cambridge University. It was not until the late 13th century that the distinctive college system that characterizes both universities was initiated. Originally, doctoral and master’s degrees were virtually synonymous and the term “bachelor” merely indicated entrance to a course of study, rather than completion of a level of work as it does today. The doctoral title, then and now, refers to the degree one holds, not to a profession or occupation, and by an ancient definition designates one sufficiently skilled in a branch of knowledge to teach it. The academic regalia in use at American colleges and universities have their origins in the academic dress used in European universities in the 14th and 15th centuries. Caps, gowns and hoods were probably a necessity then, partly to keep warm in drafty, unheated buildings, and partly to distinguish academic persons, such as those holding doctoral, masters and bachelors degrees from other members of the population. When first used, academic regalia were both distinctive and utilitarian. Today, although still distinctive, their function is more ceremonial.

The Mortarboard (Cap)

The mortarboard is adapted from one traditionally worn at Oxford. A soft cap, resembling a tam, is a modification of one worn at Cambridge. American code of academic dress requires the mortarboard be worn by those holding bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and permits either for those holding a doctorate. The cap is almost always black. The tassel worn with the cap may be black, or of a distinctive color, but only holders of a doctoral degree may wear a gold tassel.

The Gown

The gown used by most American colleges and universities is commonly black, and of three types. The major distinguishing characteristics of the gowns are the sleeves and the trimming. The bachelor’s degree gown has a closed front and long, pointed sleeves. The master’s degree gown may be worn closed or open, and has oblong sleeves open at the wrist or forearm, with the sleeve extending downward in an arc from the back. The doctoral gown may be worn open or closed, and often has three velvet bars on each full, bell-shaped sleeve. The velvet bars may be black or in a distinctive color representing the field of learning in which the degree was earned. Gowns of foreign universities and of a few American universities may be other than black, for instance red, crimson or another brilliant color.

The Hood

Hoods are the most distinctive feature of American academic regalia, and are a means of identifying the level of the degree, the institution that awarded the degree and the field of knowledge in which the degree was granted. Those holding master’s, specialist’s and doctoral degrees wear hoods lined with the official colors of the college or university granting the degree. Hoods vary in length and shape to indicate the several degrees: three feet for the bachelor’s, three-and-onehalf feet for master’s and four feet for the doctoral degree. The color of the velvet binding or edge of the hood, in widths of two, three and five inches for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree respectively, is usually, but not always, of a color distinctive of the field of learning in which the degree was earned.

The Mace

The college or university mace is carried by an institution’s chief marshal at formal occasions, including convocation and commencement. Originally a defensive weapon, the mace is a traditional symbol of authority. Salem State University’s mace carries the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, under whose authority Salem State University, through its board of trustees, derives its right to confer degrees.

H I S TORY OF T H E U N I V E R S I T Y A Tradition of Excellence Salem State University was born of the humanitarian endeavors of Horace Mann, a former Massachusetts state legislator and Secretary of Education. Mann was a pioneer in the practice of bringing education to all children no matter their socio-economic status, seeing education as an equalizer. Since its founding in 1854, Salem State University has been committed to making higher education a reality for students who might otherwise have lacked the opportunity. Today, the university strives to ensure that cost is not a barrier for anyone seeking to gain a high quality post-secondary education. Salem State University was originally known as the Salem Normal School, welcoming its first class of “young ladies who wish to prepare themselves for teaching” on September 14, 1854. Only the fourth such institution in Massachusetts and the 10th in America, the school was welcomed by the city of Salem, which generously endowed its first site at One Broad Street. The city and school quickly developed a mutually beneficial partnership that continues to thrive. Salem Normal School alumnae took community service well beyond Massachusetts’ borders. Charlotte Forten, the school’s first African-American student and a graduate of the class of 1856, was the first northern African-American school teacher to journey south to teach freed slaves. Other graduates would disburse to teach in elementary and high schools as far afield as Africa, the Middle East and Asia. As the demand for teachers increased nationwide, Salem Normal School prospered. In 1898, the student body became co-educational, although male enrollment remained small until the introduction of a commercial program in 1908, which combined professional business practice with pedagogical instruction. In 1921, the state authorized the normal schools to offer four-year degree programs. The Salem Normal School became Salem Teachers College in 1932 and a few decades later, was authorized to grant masters degrees (MEd) in 1955. The first degrees were awarded in 1957. Following World War II and the passage of the GI Bill, enrollment increased significantly, particularly among male students, and new programs were added to accommodate this growth. In 1960, Salem Teachers College became Salem State College, authorizing the institution to offer bachelor of arts degrees in a variety of liberal arts majors and a bachelor of science degree in business, in addition to the education degrees in which the institution had long specialized. The first residence halls opened in 1966, and Salem State continued to add to its academic programming throughout the years. Its first masters program, launched in 1957, was in education, and graduate education expanded greatly in the 1980s with the addition of master of business administration, master of social work and master of science in nursing programs. Today, the institution is home to 32 undergraduate programs and graduate programs that offer degrees in 24 fields. On July 28, 2010, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick approved legislation that elevated Salem State College and eight other public institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth to universities. Salem State College officially became Salem State University on October 26, 2010. Today, Salem State University is one of the largest state universities in the Commonwealth, enrolling over 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university was named a Top Producer of U.S. Fulbright Scholars in 2011 and 2017, and it continues to emphasize academic rigor, experiential learning and engagement with communities surrounding campus and across the globe. Throughout its 167-year history, Salem State has remained true to the values of its founders, while growing its mission to meet the needs of those it serves on the North Shore, in the Commonwealth and beyond.
