Middle & Senior School News Learning to Flourish!

Has it been two weeks already? Time certainly does pass quickly when we are busy learning and doing the things we love.

At St Andrews we have a strong focus on developing young men and women of character within an environment that promotes flourishing. Learning is relational and how we learn and live in community, in accordance to our College values; Faith, Grace, Learning, Personal Bests, Community, Service, Growth and Integrity is truly what encourages us to seek to do and be our best selves; to flourish. I’d like to thank our students and staff for the incredibly smooth start to the year and for their living out of our shared values. We truly are a blessed community.

At our Commencement Service last Tuesday, our Senior and Middle School leaders were inducted and our new Principal, Mr David Bliss was formally Inducted into his new role as Principal of St Andrews Lutheran College. Bishop Paul Smith (Bishop of the Lutheran Church, Queensland District) spoke to our community about the notions of service and spiritual leadership. What a blessing Mr Bliss is for our community.

Our Year 12 students attended a leadership retreat with guest speaker, Glen Gerreyn, founder of the Hopeful Institute last Friday. Glen also worked with our Year 11 students and our Year 10 students worked with their teachers and a company called Elevate to reconnect with the clarity of their vision and goals for the year ahead and how to embrace every opportunity for learning and growth.

In the Middle School, students went through a series of learning activities and routines to ‘get in the zone’ for learning. The way our Year 7 students have approached their first few weeks of middle schooling is a credit to their character. As Mr Casey (Head of Middle School) reminded parents on Wednesday night this is a time when students need to experience greater independence and room to grow, stumble and develop resilience by having to pick themselves up and face their challenges with a growth mindset.

Thank you to all of the Middle School parents who attended this Parent Information Evening. If you were unable to attend, the materials covered can be accessed through Parent Lounge next week.

Senior School parents and students are reminded that next Tuesday 7 February is the Senior School Parent Evening which starts at 5.00pm in the WC. It is a compulsory event for students in Years 10-12. Students are asked to wear their College uniform.

This morning we recognised Middle School students at a special awards assembly based on Semester Two results from 2016. Awards were presented in three categories; Academic Achievement, Academic Improvement and Academic Endeavour based on GPA and EPA results. Next Friday, our OP 1-5 students will return and be acknowledged at our Senior School Awards Assembly. Parents are invited to attend.

Important Dates Weeks 3 – 6 Next Tuesday 7 February is the Senior School Parent Evening and Friday 10 February is the Senior School Awards Assembly (8.30am in the Worship Centre). Friday 10 February is our Year 12 student’s first QCS preparation workshop for 2017. The Year 12 Biology Camp is being held Thursday 16 February and Friday 17 February and Thursday 23 February is the Years 7-12 Swim Carnival.

Students should be collected from outside the Worship Centre and beyond the crossing. I strongly recommend a delayed pickup for our Middle and Senior School students.

The afternoon bell goes at 3.10pm and, in general, it takes about 5 minutes for students to travel to the Worship Centre.

All secondary students are also welcome to use the library (CRC) for purposeful study after school until 5.00pm daily.

Afternoon tutorials and study assistance is available.

Can I also ask parents to be cautious and considerate, by obeying the traffic rules around the College and in particular on Tallebudgera Creek Road. We are blessed to be nested into a residential area and our neighbours have expressed concerns about cars parking too close to driveways, and illegal right hand turns and U-turns performed while exiting the grounds. Whilst I appreciate that we are all busy, maintaining a sense of cheerfulness and patience when congestion occurs is best for all involved. Ensuring the safety of our children is our collective responsibility.

Individually and as a community of young people, I pray that our students continue to seek opportunities to learn, grow and serve; and to make significant contributions within and beyond our community with a sense of purpose and wellbeing this year.

The Carpark Carpark congestion is a challenge for all schools, and we certainly experience congestion for a relatively short period of time each afternoon (3.10pm – 3.25pm). All members of the community are asked to be vigilant, patient and focused on the safety of the students while driving in and around the College grounds. (Stay focused, observe general traffic rules and don’t respond to messages or calls on mobiles.)

Chaplains Chat The Lord does not look at the things people look at.

People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. – 1 Samuel 16:7b (NIV) Recently, when it was time to choose a biblical text for the installation of our new Principal, Mr David Bliss – the choice seemed obvious. I chose a text to do with King David, the gentle, mighty and faithful leader of the people of Israel.

When David was being chosen as King (you can read about it in 1 Samuel 16:1-13) the only criteria God was interested in was whether the future king was going to be faithful to him, that is, whether he had a heart that was devoted towards God. Whilst David turned out not to be a perfect king, he was certainly one of Israel’s best and was later described as a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22).

Middle School News Welcome The start of the academic year is always an exciting time for students, parents and staff. Schools are rambling empty places without students so it has been wonderful to see the crowds come flooding back into our corridors and rooms. I hope that 2017 affords all members of the College community an opportunity to grow and find things in their days which both challenge and inspire them.

Leadership 2017 We formally inducted our Middle School leaders last week. I look forward to working with these students throughout the year and with a broader group of our Year 9 cohort as they develop their leadership skills across a range of opportunities in the Middle School.

It makes me wonder if faithfulness (having a heart fixed on something or someone) is the secret recipe for things to work out. For example, if a couple are faithful to each other, then other matters like their communication skills, love for each other and sharing of family responsibilities will sort themselves out – so long as they remain faithful to each other. Or, alternatively, if a student is faithful in pursuing their studies, their academic ability or starting place doesn’t matter. If they remain faithful to the task they will learn and succeed.

Perhaps, life is more complicated than a simple philosophy of faithfulness, but it certainly makes you think. I know as a pastor that in spiritual matters there is very little (OK, nothing) that human beings can do to please God. Most of our thoughts and actions aren’t exactly God-pleasing and even the ones we think are good are nothing compared to God’s holiness, righteousness and glory. So, it is true that we have nothing (of importance) to offer God. Yet, I don’t think God minds. He is happy to work on those details later.

First and foremost – he wants our heart, our attention and our love.

Giving God our heart, attention and love are things we might be afraid or reluctant to do. We may even be worried what God might see if he looks at our heart and searches the depths of our soul. The good news is that God has seen it all before. He knows our hearts better than we know ourselves.

He even knows that our attempts at being faithful to him or anyone may fail or come undone. Yet God still loves us and wants to give us a go. He has sent his Son, Jesus, to give us new and faithful hearts. And he works in us, though his precious Holy Spirit, to iron-out our kinks and renew and shape our character. It’s not a bad deal, really. We give God our weak and failing hearts and he gives us GOD LOOKS AT everything.

Electives 2017 The start of the year always sees a scramble for elective changes and this week signalled the end of our ‘change’ window. All students should have settled into their subjects for the year and any issues relating to Semester Two electives can be sorted throughout the second term.

Uniform and Diaries A consistent and proactive approach to ensuring that these two items are kept organised and well-maintained will often see other positive routines appear across a range of ‘habits’. We encourage our students to take pride in their appearance both within and beyond the College and it gave me enormous joy to see a Year 7 student at Robina one afternoon wearing his uniform immaculately and with obvious pride. Please ensure that all items are labelled clearly and that your son/daughter respects these two elements of their College inventory.

Flourishing in the Senior School Positive Education In the Senior School we continue to work closely with our students and staff to assist them to develop the skills that will help them to flourish, that combination of feeling good and doing well through increasing positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and achievements or what the experts call PERMA (Seligman). The Senior School Pastoral Care Team support the notion that “it is possible that schools could teach both the skills of well-being and the skills of achievement” (Seligman, 2011). Our purpose is to encourage our students to achieve their personal bests, stretch themselves and learn the skills of wellbeing. Our staff commit to knowing their students and being consistent, persistent and insistent about achievement of personal bests, attitude that facilitates a learning culture, behaviour that builds a harmonious and supportive environment and dress and appearance that shows respect for the College values.

We aim to ensure that our students are cared for, that they are challenged and that they grow (academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually). One way this is encouraged is through the regular setting of Term goals that are SMART. Please check your child’s diary for goals that are specific and set clear targets for both GPA and EPA personal bests.

The Senior School Pastoral Care Team consists of Mrs Washington (Year 12 Coordinator), Ms Yeo (Year 11 Coordinator) and Mr Ivett (Year 10 Coordinator). We also have 24 Learning Advisor Teachers who are the first port of contact for you and your child. We look forward to meeting with our Senior School parents next Tuesday 7 February from 5.00pm in the Worship Centre.

Your child should also have completed a questionnaire around their Virtues and Character Strengths. Character Strengths are positive personality traits that lead to benefits for ourselves and others. There are 24 strengths including qualities such as, gratitude, zest, judgement, hope or perseverance. At St Andrews, we want to know our students which includes being aware of their strengths. This awareness allows us opportunities to encourage them to work to these strengths because this is the way their brains are wired to perform at their best. There is also a benefit to general wellbeing as well as academic success thus it is a win-win situation. Parents may be interested in taking the questionnaire and discussing their own strengths with their children.

The link is: www.authentichappiness. sas.upenn.edu/testcenter Year 12 Retreat The Year 12 cohort enjoyed last Friday’s retreat at Burleigh Christian Youth Camp. We were blessed to have Glen Gerreyn from The Hopeful Institute come and talk to our Seniors to kick off their retreat and their ‘Best Year Ever’. As one of our Year 12’s , Patrick Silviera, said “everyone tells you what you need to do, work hard, be disciplined and organised, don’t procrastinate, focus, make good decisions and ex-

ecute, but Glen actually gave us practical tips on how to do those things’. For example, Glen told our Year 12’s to work hard on what comes easy (play to your strengths), become a minimalist (get everything out of your room so it is easier to focus), break tasks down into chunks, commit to 20 minutes of work each night (you will probably end up doing a lot more but make a start and develop a routine). Thanks to Mr Dart, Mr Hennessy and Year 12 Coordinator Mrs Washington who attended and helped begin what will be – Our Best Year Ever. I look forward to working with the Years 12s as leaders and am sure that it really will be a great year for them and the College. As Mrs Washington said, “they are a credit to their parents, the College and it will be a honour to serve them.” Some of the goals Year 12 students committed to include; respecting each other as individuals, working together, getting outside our comfort zones and 100% participation. If we honour these ideals than I am sure it will be ‘our best year ever’.

Leos 2017 You may be aware that St Andrews is linked with the Tallebudgera Lions Club and have our very own Leos Club. Leo actually stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity through Service. Our 2016 Leos were a fantastic group of young people who raised several thousand dollars to help various community groups. In fact they served at two Bunnings Barbecues over the Christmas period to raise over $2000 which we will use in the coming months to contribute to our community. Apart from our regular fundraising barbecues over the holidays we will also be involved in beach care, Relay for Life, charity runs, visiting aged care, school fundraisers and much more. We meet every second Friday at 8am, including this week at 8am in the Senior School Boardroom (upstairs J Block). Students who are interested in contributing to the community, taking action through service or developing their leadership skills are encouraged to attend.

Congratulations to: • College Captains: Jarred Connolly, Olivia English, Vice Captains: Alex Blackborough and Emily Burnell who attended Enthuse Leadership Camp in the last week of the school holidays. This is a wonderful opportunity for our student leaders to meet, share ideas and forge networks of support that will help to sustain them over a very busy and demanding year. Our leaders always come back from Enthuse saying it was one of the best weeks of my life, that was life-changing and it was so great to meet other like-minded people.

Performing Arts News Welcome to 2017 and a year of exciting new beginnings for the Arts Department. From the start of the term our new PAT Studios and ensemble rehearsal spaces within the Junior School Music Facility will be open and ready for use. We are very excited about this new creative hub and for our PAT students to have a more permanent home after the disruption of last year.

PAT All PAT lessons and ensembles commenced in Week 2.

All groups will rehearse in the Junior School Music Room.

Jazz Band to Feature at P & F Picnic in the Playground This year we are featuring our Jazz Band at the P & F Picnic in the Playground. Students will also participate in a workshop with local jazz musicians prior to their first performance.

Details relating to these events will be available in the coming weeks.

Gold Coast Theatre Awards At the end of last year the Gold Coast Theatre Awards were held at the Arts Centre. These awards cover productions presented by schools as well as local theatre companies. The Little Mermaid was nominated in 3 categories, Best Supporting Actor in a Youth Musical (Jonathon Aiello), Best Actress in a Youth Musical (Tia Lightbody) and Best Vocal Direction of a Musical. We won Best Vocal Direction. This was an exciting achievement made even more special given that we were in the open category against some of the major theatre companies.

Our very own Mrs Kristine Dennis was also awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in Bonny and Clyde at Spotlight Theatre.

Introducing PAT Speech and Drama Tutor: Moyra Major At the end of last year PAT Speech and Drama Tutor Louise Delaney decided to reduce her number of teaching days. As a department we are really grateful for Louise’s work with our Speech and Drama students and look forward to her ongoing work with our younger budding performers from Years 1-5. It is with pleasure that I can let you know that Moyra Major will be joining our PAT Team from 2017 teaching Speech and Drama and Effective Communication from Years 6-12.

Moyra Major has been a familiar voice on Gold Coast radio for close to 15 years, hosting her own programs and also part of several number one partnerships. She has also won several Australian Commercial Radio Awards, including Best New Talent in her first year on air.

Term One is full of exciting opportunities in the Arts. Apart from moving into our wonderful new Dance and Music and PAT facilities, there are several experiences planned.

Idea of North Workshop and Performance On Wednesday 8 March our Senior Choir will be joining with several other Lutheran schools to participate in a workshop and performance with renowned ARIA Award winning acapella group The Idea of North. This is such an exciting opportunity for our singers to work with a group of this calibre.

Moyra’s first love was Theatre having completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Theatre), and she spent many years treading the boards performing original works in and around the Gold Coast. She has also stared down the spotlights of Stand up Comedy, Improvisation and Dramatherapy. Moyra also runs her own Public Speaking Business called Major Confident – and loves watching her students reach their goals.

Visual Art News During the holidays, Liliana Mikami (Year 12) attended the MacGregor Summer School Art Camp at USQ at Gatton. Liliana was the youngest student to attend the workshop and she specialised in the art of papercutting. She learnt different ways of papercutting, display ideas, capturing images and shadows created by the papercuts and various techniques using paper. Liliana’s attendance at this art camp was generously supported by the Masterschool Portraits Scholarship.

As a senior art student, Liliana will benefit greatly from this experience as she enters her final year of Visual Art. She is also super keen to share her new-found skills with the other art students at the College. Well done, Liliana - a fine Visual Arts Ambassador for 2017!

Sport News What an exciting year of Sport it will be for St Andrews.

There are so many opportunities for our students to flourish and grow through our extensive Sports Program.

Cocurricular Sport Term 1 Kokoda The 48km and 96km Kokoda Challenge is held the first weekend of Term 3, with the 30km event a few weeks earlier. This event is open to students in Years 10-12.

Futsal Open to all Years 7-12 students, male and female who want to trial and train for the SE Queensland Titles in Week 7 this Term. Training is on in the mornings from 7-8am.

Netball Trials for the Open QISSN Squad will be on Wednesday of Weeks 2 and 3. Girls in Years 9-12 are encouraged to trial.

The Middle School Development Squad will commence Wednesday morning of Week 4. Players of all abilities are welcome.

Weightlifting Mr Linzey Beister former Australian Junior Coach and Head Coach at Gold Coast Weightlifting Club will continue to train any Years 7-12 students interested on Monday and Wednesday mornings in the Gym from 7-8am.

Gym Our soon to be renovated Gym will be available five mornings a week for any of our Middle and Senior School students to attend and will be supervised. The Gym will open in Term 1 once construction is completed. All students wanting to use the Gym MUST attend an induction with Ms Casey West or Mrs Libby Wood. These will be available on Monday-Friday 7-8am from Week 3 onwards. No student can use the Gym independently until they have participated in this induction process.

Swimming Carnival This will be held on the Thursday of Week 5 (Thursday 23 February) at Somerset Pool. All events will be 50m. More details to come but I am very much looking forward to seeing our talented swimmers showcase their skills in the pool.

District Sport News Hinterland District Sport Trials The coordination of all Hinterland District and South Coast Regional Sport trials and Carnivals, has now been separated into Junior (Years 4-6) and Senior (Years 7-12). Mr Manion andrewm@salc.qld.edu.au will coordinate all nominations for Years 4-6 and Mrs Wood libbyw@salc.qld.edu.au will coordinate Years 7-12. Please contact the relevant coordinator for your year level if you are interested in District Sport Trials in 2017. All of the dates are listed on the College Website and on various notice boards around the College. Reminders will be in student notices and various College news sites as trial dates approach, but it is every students’ OWN responsibility to research the dates and contact the correct staff member if they are interested in such events.

District Swimming Trials The Hinterland Green Swimming Carnival for 10-19 year old swimmers will be held at TSS on Monday 20 February 2017.

Any students who wish to participate at this Carnival/District Trial must contact Mr Manion (Years 4-6) or Mrs Wood (Years 7-12) to receive a selection application form. Successful students will be notified and further information will then be supplied.

A new school year means a clean slate for students. Here are 7 ideas to help you make the most of the fresh start and make this year your child’s best year ever at school A new school year means a fresh start for students. Regardless of your child’s performance last year, they start school with a clean slate. A break offers students the chance to begin new habits and adopt new behaviours.

Here are five ideas to help you make the most of the fresh start and make this year your child’s best year ever year at school:

1 Commit to your child going to school every day on time One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she goes to school every day – and gets there on time. Kids spend more time asleep than at school, so we need to maximise every day to get full value.

2 Help kids start each day well A good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and some words of encouragement from you will help set a positive tone for a day of learning.

This may mean that you adjust your morning routine so that kids have plenty of time get up, eat and get ready for the day.

3 Establish work & study habits The most successful students are those that develop regular study habits that suit their lifestyle, their study style and their school’s expectations. Find out the work expectations from your child’s or young person’s school

and help them establish a work routine that matches.

4 Make sure your child gets enough sleep Many children and young people are sleepdeprived, which impacts on their wellbeing and their learning. A good night’s sleep consolidates learning, as well as assisting future learning. Children need between 10-12 hours of sleep each day, while teens need a minimum of nine hours. Help kids get sufficient sleep by having a regular bedtime and get-up time each day. Have a 45-minute wind-down time each night, and remove screens and mobile phones from bedrooms.

5 Insist kids exercise The old saying about ‘a healthy body and a healthy mind’ is so true. Exercise releases the chemicals needed for learning and wellbeing.

Yet kids today get less exercise than those of past generations, which is an impediment to learning and mental health. Health professionals recommend a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise per day for kids of all ages.

Encourage your child to play sport; promote free and active play and look for ways to make moving part of their daily lives.

6 Focus on being friendly Schools are very social places requiring kids to negotiate many different social situations

each day. Yet we often only focus on academic learning. There are strong links between social success, and academic success and wellbeing.

Encourage kids to be open and tolerant; to be friendly; to be sensitive to others; to be involved in plenty of activities and to be social risk-takers. These are all characteristics of socially successful kids. At the same time discourage anti-social behaviours such as overcompetitiveness, self-centredness and lack of sharing.

7 Develop self-help skills Successful students are often well organised, self-directed and self-motivated. Personal organisation seems to come more naturally to girls than boys, however both genders benefit from coaching in this important area. You can foster organisational skills and self-direction by developing simple, age-appropriate self-help skills related to their every day lives. Such skills as making lunches, packing school bags, and organising after school schedules can be great lessons that impact on how kids perform at school.

At the start of the school year kids are likely to adopt changes than at any other time. Make the most of the opportunity by focusing on two or three areas to really focus on and you’ll find that the rest will fall into place.
