Middle/Senior School Bulletin Issue 15 / 11 November 2016 Middle & Senior School News On Wednesday Mr Casey led a chapel on the theme of gratitude and the secondary students honoured and expressed their gratitude to Mr Kotzur for his leadership and support over the past seven years. It was a fitting acknowledgement of our wonderful Principal, Mr Kotzur.

Graduating Class – Visual Art Exhibition Last Friday evening the Year 12 Visual Art students hosted an opening night for their Graduating Exhibition in the Learning Hub. The artistic abilities and creative energy of these young people is inspiring. Thank you to the students for sharing their works and to Ms Barclay (Visual Arts teacher aide) and Ms Harman (Visual Arts Coordinator) for supporting, enticing and coaxing the very best possible work out of the students.

A farewell afternoon tea for Mr Kotzur will be held on Monday 21 November 3.30-5.00pm on the deck near the Tuckshop. Parents and friends from the College are invited to join us all to wish Mr Kotzur all the best for his future and to thank him for his leadership and contribution to St Andrews.

The Edge Last Friday the Year 9 girls returned from GOOGA and this week they completed Service Learning activities and worked with Mr Tanguy to reflect on their experiences. The Edge experience is a very powerful rite of passage for our students and often recounted as one of the fondest memories of our graduating students. It has a significant impact on students individually and as a cohort and a considerable amount of work and care that goes into planning and running the Edge program. Thank you to all involved and in particular Mr Tanguy for walking alongside our Year 9 students and their families throughout this journey. I look forward to hearing from our girls at their Reflection night tonight.

Sports Awards Breakfast Last Wednesday we hosted a Sports Award Breakfast. I’d like to acknowledge and thank our Sports Captains and Mrs Wood for a superb celebration of Secondary Sport at St Andrews. This year we tried a new format for sports awards and feedback from parents would be most appreciated libbyw@salc.qld.edu.au

This weekend our 15 Years boys Futsal team will compete at the Australasian Futsal Titles. This is a remarkable achievement. Thank you to Mr Gilveray for staying with the team over the weekend, due to the early start and late finish draw, and to Mr McGilveray’s mother who will cook evening

meals for the boys. At the end of the month the 13 Years Boys and Girls teams will also compete at these titles. Thank you to all of the coaches and parents for their support of our teams. Futsal continues to flourish at St Andrews.

Chaplains Chat Being Connected!

Making sense of life can be very challenging. The big questions of life are difficult. What is it that we should be working towards? Where should I be placing my energies?

What ultimately, is important? Our Years 7-11 Chapel on Monday explored how four members of our community have experienced connection in life to something bigger than themselves which has impacted on them significantly in a positive manner.

Also this weekend, we have eight students competing in the State Championships for Olympic Weightlifting which has been another new initiative in the area of Sport this year.

Best wishes to all students wearing the St Andrews blue and red this weekend.

Farewell Year 12 Class of 2016 Next week is a significant week in the lives of our Year 12s as they go through a number of final farewell events which culminate in the Final Assembly on Friday 18 November. Year 12 students, may God bless and keep you and on behalf of all of the College staff, I would like to thank you for your wonderful contributions to this community both this year and throughout your time at the College.

Mr Rob Luxton shared how he and his wife embarked on an adventure to Kyrgyzstan back in the early 2000s. This experience was very influential in growing Rob’s connection to God. Right from the beginning where he changed his plans from going to Tanzania, to instead head to Kyrgyzstan, he knew that God was in all that was happening. This brought significant meaning and purpose to all that he did and experienced while away from the safety of Australia.

Year 11 student - Milli Nyssen shared how she has been challenged in the last couple of years by the health difficulties people close to her have experienced. This has led her to question what is really important in life and she has responded by committing herself to projects that positively impact others. This has in turn increased her connection with causes bigger than herself and brought profound meaning to her life.

Ms Tania Stewart unexpectedly bumped into an amazing experience of being blessed through a visit to a monastery in Spain during long service leave in Term 3. She encountered a tremendous sense of peace and reassurance through being present in the preparation for a worship time by Benedictine Monks.

We Are Not There Yet! As we draw closer to the end of the year, and some students find their focus turning to the approaching vacation, it is important that we remember to “finish well.” There is still much work to be done. The classic children’s story, the tortoise and the hare, reminds us that slow and steady is the best way to approach all of the demands on our time. For students; assessments, exam study and general homework, all benefit from a slow and determined approach to producing the best possible work. Please encourage your child(ren) to continue to be the best they can be, in all that they do at the College until the end of term. It is how we finish the race that matters most!

Year 10 student - Jack Sturgeon reflected on the process of completing the Brisbane Kokoda challenge and how it was really special to participate with his mates. In the process of sticking by the task and participating to the best of their ability as a team they, unexpectedly went on to win the event! This highlighted how being connected as a team to the higher goal of doing your best can lead to achieving more than expected.

In all these examples, connection to God or purposes bigger than just our own individual needs, leads to a life so much more rich and meaningful than if we stay focused on ourselves and our individual needs and insecurities.

Being connected to God and His purposes brings a whole new dimension to life. It awakens our spirit and energises us in ways that are not possible if we remain inward focused.

God works amongst us - may we all be open to His movement in our community and be ready to take up any challenges He sends our way.

Middle School News Leadership 2017 Leadership forms are now available from Middle School Administration and should be returned by Wednesday 16 November. Mr Tanguy and I are looking forward to reviewing the forms and beginning the process of selecting our leaders for 2017.

Electives 2017 All students should now have received their elective selections for 2017. The computer program which allocates these preferences is amazingly efficient and does a far superior job of allocating higher preferences across our 350 students than our old manual system; however, it is simply not possible for students to all receive their first preferences. Completing a ‘Change of Elective’ form (available from Middle School Administration) is important for students who may wish to seek a change as it allows us to build a picture of students for whom a ‘swapping’ of electives would be beneficial.

Nonetheless, the completion of a form does not mean that a space in that elective will become available. Throughout the coming weeks we will continue to refine these elective choices until they are timetabled at the end of the year.

The Edge Last Friday saw the Year 9 girls return from their time up at Googa and this week they have started their reflection and service-learning days. ‘The Edge’ is a significant experience for our students and many other schools comment on the importance of this program and their wish that something similar existed in their own campuses. Enormous thanks must go to Mr Christophe Tanguy for his tireless dedication to, and organisation of, ‘The Edge’ and for his multiple return trips up to Blackbutt (including one family camping trip at the site!). Additional thanks should be extended to Mr James Nelson, Ms Tara Bible and Ms Colleen Dockstader for giving up their time and comforts to attend Googa and support our students. Finally, thanks to Mr Bob Grehan for his final appearance at the Googa site – over the years his practical nature and wit as dry as the surrounding countryside have provided many students with the impetus to continue to persevere in their journey through this experience. He will be missed up there.

Senior School News Flourishing in the Senior School Next week is the final week for our Year 12’s and I would like to wish our graduates of 2016 all the best for their future endeavours. We look forward to hearing about all the wonderful things they get up to as they begin the next stage – life after school. I would also like to thank our Year 12 parents, it has been a very busy year and I look forward to sharing the final week with you at our various celebrations of 13 years of schooling. I am sure all of our parents are very proud of these fine young people, as we are at the College.

For our Year 11’s and Year 10’s it is business as usual as we complete some very important assessments to finish off the year. It is imperative that our students remain focused on their goals, the pathways to achieving them and are focusing on doing the little things right (immaculate uniform, polished homework, complete drafts to get the fullest possible teacher feedback, persistence and grit, a growth mindset).

Once all the hard work is done there is a full program on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 of guest speakers, the Christmas Service, a band, sporting events culminating with the Year 10 and 11 Final Assembly in the Worship Centre where Year 11 students will receive their senior jerseys. Parents are welcome to attend.

Jarred Connolly, Emily Steele, Emily Burnell and Patrick Silveira who attended the GRIP Leadership Conference with Ms Yeo this week. They heard about the value of responsibility (walking the talk), thinking outside the box, overcoming leadership challenges, supporting their peers and turning an idea into action. Thanks for giving up your time in classes to attend and I look forward to hearing more about how you will use what you learned to make an impact in 2017.

At this time of the term it might be good for parents to have their children get out the diaries and turn to page 106 and 107 to review the planning and actions that students can continue to commit to, in order that the growth is more likely by end of term. It’s useful to help adolescents with metacognition (thinking about their thinking), by asking ‘what’s going well?’ and ‘what next steps in planning and action will increase the likelihood of growth, learning and goal attainment in these final weeks?’ will be useful for many. ‘How confident are you that you can sustain these actions and increase likelihood of goal?’ can help gauge their sense of self-efficacy with task and ‘what can I do to support you towards those actions?’

Counselling Update •

To the nine Year 11 students who showed a willingness to serve as College Captains in 2016. They are an impressive group who delivered nine very different but amazing speeches recently. Well done, Alex, Jarred Connolly, Zak Lopez, Rory McLynskey, Kara Batchelor, Emily Burnell, Olivia English, Keely McVay, Milli Nyssen. Whatever Mr Kotzur’s decision, our College Leadership is in very good hands.

All of our Years 11 and Year 12 students who gave up their time on Friday nights throughout the year to visit the homeless on the Gold Coast as part of the Rosies Student Engagement Program and the wonderful staff who supported this – Mr Schache, Ms Dockstader, Ms Yeo, Mr Smith and Mrs Hancock.

On Monday 31 October, three students represented the College at an Online Safety Student Leaders Forum in Brisbane. Students from a variety of schools throughout Queensland met with Online Safety expert Brett Lee to share ideas about how we can help children to keep safe when using the internet. In 2017 students from our Middle School will be working on developing programs to deliver to Junior School students. These programs and workshops will focus on educating students about what they need to be aware of when using social media Apps, how to report online bullying, maintaining privacy and legalities of internet use.

Student Development Goals, Action and Review Secondary students have space in their diaries at the start of each term to set goals for growth and learning. They’ll often write in performance goals, but these tend not to motivate or tap into values and strengths as well as learning or growth goals. As teachers and parents we can continue to work with the adolescents in our care on understanding the difference between a ‘tunnel vision’ view of performance versus the open ended learning and acquiring focus that is more likely to grow and stretch us.

Performing Arts Tuition

Twilight Vocal Concert On Tuesday nightour Middle and Senior School PAT Vocal students performed for parents and friends in the Staff Common Room. The audience enjoyed afternoon tea looking out over the valley, while enjoying the performances. This was a wonderful showcase of Vocal PAT and special thanks to Mrs Kristine Dennis for her wonderful work with these talented students.

PAT 2017 As we begin our preparations for 2017, please note the following regarding our Performing Arts Tuition: 1. If you are currently enrolled in PAT, this enrolment will continue into 2017 unless we receive a Cancellation Form which can be found on the College website. The only exception to this is current Year 3 Strings or Mini Musos who will need to complete a PAT Application Form (found on the College website).

2. Our Performing Arts Administrator Anne Driscoll will email to confirm the receipt of a PAT Application within a week of receiving it. If you do not get an email confirmation, please email performingarts@salc.qld.edu.au to ensure that the application was received. As we do tend to fill places quickly, parents are encouraged to apply now for 2017.

3. Timetables will not be finalised until January. PAT teachers will contact parents the week prior to lessons commencing.

4. If there are no available places in the program, Anne will email parents in January to advise that they are on a waitlist.

End of Year Concerts As we approach the time of year when we showcase Individual PAT students in our End of Year Concerts, we are trialling some new formats. Some of our younger performers will feature in First Break Mini Concerts and our MS/SS Vocal Students will present in a Twilight Concert in the Staff Common Room in the Main Administration Building overlooking the valley.

Business News Business Management Excursion The Year 11 Business Management class recently went to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sport News Qld Championships Primary School Touch Tournament Over the weekend three Primary School teams, competed in the Qld Schools State Championships for Touch. This is an extensive competition with 50 different schools entering. It is great to see the growth in the Junior Touch Program here at school with three teams representing the College as opposed to just the 1 in 2015. All teams played extremely well and to the best of their ability. There were mixed results with our Open A Girls Team making it through to the semi-finals of the Cup competition. It was a wonderful opportunity for all players to develop a better understanding of the game and to apply all the skills and strategies into a competitive environment. A huge thanks must go to Mr Mark Hibbs, Mr Jordan McAllister, Mrs Leanne Pett and Ms Casey West for giving up their time to not only train the students two mornings a week but also their weekend to lead them in this tournament.

Sports Awards Breakfast Last Wednesday was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our hugely talented students in the school sports system. During this time awardees, their families and the teaching staff got to celebrate Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards whilst enjoying a delicious breakfast.

Mrs Nicole Cusack was our special guest who provided great insight into her experiences as an elite Netball player and coach, providing some helpful advice for our budding athletes. Thanks to Bella Janssen for her athletic acrobatics performance, and Elliott Baylis and Jaidyn McNeill for their fantastic rendition of the “Eye of the Tiger”. Major sports awards were announced and given to the following students: • • • • • •

The students investigated management practice in a not for profit organisational setting. Their focus was human resource management and operations. The students learnt how volunteers were so important to the success of the business meeting objectives of releasing injured wildlife that had recovered back into their environment. The students also observed a western brown snake being operated on after being admitted with a huge gash in its underbelly.

It is an amazing experience to watch the veterinarians and wildlife keepers at work and at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary hospital. Visitors are able to watch the work in action.

Qld Champion School Olympic Weightlifting Titles This weekend eight of our students will represent the College for the first time in the State Schools Olympic Weightlifting Titles held at the Sleeman Centre Brisbane. Here they will perform both individually and as a collective school group.

They will perform six lifts in total including three snatch attempts and three clean and Jerk attempts. Thanks to Mr Linzey Beister from Gold Coast Weightlifting Club for all the expertise, support and training he has provided our students.

Australasian Futsal Titles This weekend our 15 boy’s futsal team will finish their 2016 season with the Australasian Titles. Their journey to this competition commenced in February where they competed in the SE Qld Championships. Through this and their outstanding performance in the Champion of Champions Tournament they will proudly represent our College at this highly challenging competition. They will have 4 x 40 minute games on both the Friday and Saturday, with this determining their Sunday schedule. Thanks to Mr Paul McGilveray for coaching this team all year and giving countless hour to mentor and guide these young men. I wish them all the best and look forward to reporting on how they went in the next Bulletin.

Student Achievement Emily Martin has received an invitation to compete in the US Kids Australian Open which is being held in Sydney in January 2017. At this tournament she will have the opportunity to qualify for the US Kids World Championship which is held at Pinehurst Golf Course in North Carolina in the middle of next year.

All items must be clean & ironed (not damaged, stained, faded or showing excessive wear). Items may be submitted in January but, due to the back to school rush, any credit will not be available until mid February.

Emily has also recently competed in the last round of the Glasshouse Mountains Futures Tour at Northlakes Golf Club where she had a great round and was the Overall Nett Winner.

On the weekend she played in the Ian Baker Finch Classic at Twin Waters. Emily has a few weeks off now before the Greg Norman Junior Masters in December. Well done, Emily!

Farewell Afternoon Tea

The ConocoPhillips Science Experience is a fun 3 or 4 days of science activities for Year 9 and 10 students in 2016.

Each program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work.

The program takes place in over thirty-five universities and tertiary institutions, within many different laboratories and lecture theatres. Participants perform experiments in the laboratories, meet and hear senior lecturers in the lecture theatres, attend site visits and walk around and experience what it is like to be on the campus of a university or tertiary institution. More than 65,000 students have taken this rare opportunity, up to date.

The program also provides information about further studies in science, technology and engineering. It highlights the wide range of careers that allow students to pursue their interest and abilities in the sciences.

One aspect of the program often commented on by participants is the opportunity to meet and share ideas with students from different schools. Each program includes a BBQ or other social activity.

Earning the right

Earning the right and not assuming a sense of entitlement is a life lesson parents, teachers and coaches must instil in children.

On talk-back radio recently I heard a caller tell a timely story about how as a child she was lucky enough to receive riding lessons from a renowned horse expert.

He had one condition. She had to earn the right to be taught to ride a horse. That meant she had to muck out the stables; brush and feed the horse; look after the gear and do everything else required to look after a horse. Only when she’d proved herself could she earn the right to ride a horse under his tutelage.

This caller said this powerful lesson shaped her entire life. It taught her that there were no entitlements in life; to work hard and value her achievements. She never took anything for granted.

Contrast this with the extraordinary sense of entitlement of Australian tennis players Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic who routinely treat the public, players and the game that serves them well, with utter disdain. Their attitude of entitlement is mind-boggling, not to say embarrassing to reasonable-minded, hard-working people.

a fabulous lesson for all parents and teachers.

If we want to raise a generation to appreciate what they have, then we shouldn’t give children or young people everything on a platter. In an era of small families, child pester power and relative affluence it’s tempting to simply give kids what they want.

“Dad, can I have a…?”

“Sure!”

The Rolling Stones were right four decades ago when they sang, “You can’t always get what you want!” Those words form a great child-rearing lesson. That is, just because you can provide something for your kids, doesn’t mean that you do.

They need to earn the right to have something by saving, working for or simply waiting until they are old enough to appreciate it.

Similarly, kids don’t automatically have a right to greater freedoms such as going out at night; those rights need to be earned by proving they are trustworthy.

Also, kids who think they are entitled to use a part of the house such as a living room without cleaning up mess are acting with a false sense of entitlement.

In fact, there are no entitlements, only rights. And rights are earned by being responsible.

A child has a right to use the living room but they also have a responsibility to clean up a rather than leave it a pigsty. A night banished to their room is a reminder that spending time in the living room is not an entitlement. It’s a right that comes with conditions.

Earning the right! A simple phrase with so much complexity.

I suspect it’s a phrase that neither Nick Kyrgios or Bernard Tomic heard much when they were growing up. Maybe their parents thought their prodigious talents excused them from having conditions placed upon them. If so, they did them no favours as good manners, gratitude and graciousness appear to be lacking in their social repertoires.

It usually takes a parent, teacher or coach to remind kids that they have to earn the right to have things, to do things and ultimately to be respected. That’s a lesson that stays for life.
