Middle & Senior School News As we enter the final few weeks of Term 4, there is a temptation to become so busy that we forget to stop and take a moment to truly appreciate all that has been and is still to come in the 2013 College year. Tuesday night’s celebration of gifts at our Presentation Night was the opportune time to stop, reflect and be inspired by our wonderful students.

This is a truly special community, rich in its passion for developing the whole child and pursuing excellence. The partnership and dedication shown by staff and parents towards raising children who are both confident in themselves and astutely aware of the potential they have to shape the lives of others, through service and building positive and meaningful relationships, is what typifies our community. Congratulations to all of the award recipients and thank you to the student performers. Thank you also to the parents who supported Presentation Night through their child’s attendance – the evening was a testimony to the excellence that has been achieved across so many aspects of College life.

We are indeed thankful for our many blessings.

As Year 12 graduate and our Year 11 students assume their roles as leaders at St Andrews, we look forward to their embracing of the strong traditions and legacy passed on through to our Year 12 cohort of 2014 and eagerly await the initiatives and energy they will bring to our College as leaders in 2014.

College Captains Kelsey Caruana and Joshua Prince College Vice-Captains Virginia Guthrie and John Hamstra The Edge The weekend before last, I had the great pleasure of visiting the Year 9 girls at the GOOGA and on Friday night I will enjoy attending their Reflection Evening. The Edge experience is a very powerful one and it is often amongst the top few memories shared by our seniors as having a significant impact on them individually and as a cohort.

With a focus on; service, pushing through fear and limitations, character building and community, the Edge experience is both unique and essential to our program here at St Andrews. Next week, the Year 9 students resume normal classes, undoubtedly much richer for the experience.

There is a considerable amount of work and care that goes into planning and running the Edge program. Thank you to Mrs Ijurco, for doing such a fabulous job coordinating the program and thank you also to Mr Tanguy who led the Reflection weeks, attended the boys camp and spent the middle weekend back at camp with the girls. Thanks too, to Ms Castles, Ms Sempf, Mr Nelson, Mr Casey and Pastor Terry for visiting camp and to the staff involved, back at the College, for their support of the Year 9 students throughout the Edge program.

ies is a local organization that provides food for the local homeless. The Year 10’s will be delivering the goodies in the next couple of weeks. The girls took some fruit down to the class to say thank you for kindly donating food to the cause.

Congratulations to John Hamstra who attended the official welcome of the Commonwealth Games Flame as it travelled around Australia in preparation for the Commonwealth Games next year. John is pictured with Mayor Tate and was representing the Gold Coast City Junior Council Executive.

As we draw closer to the end of the year, and some students find their focus turning to the approaching vacation, it is important that we remind ourselves that we are not there yet! There is still much work to be done. The classic children’s story, the tortoise and the hare, reminds us that slow and steady is the best way to approach all of the demands on our time. For students; assessments, exam study and general homework, all benefit from a slow and determined approach to producing the best possible work.

Please encourage your child(ren) to continue to be the best they can be, in all that they do at the College until the end of term. It is how we finish the race that matters most!

Congratulations to Brooke Chown who was selected in the Queensland Touch Team and will compete at the National Championships in Melbourne later in the year.

Recently Virginia Guthrie, ably assisted by Dakota Leschke, organised an Inter-House Chess competition raising money for the NSW Bushfire Appeal. Binging was the overall winner. It is so fantastic to see our students have the confidence, skill and passion to organise activites for other to enjoy. Also thank you to Mrs Burnell who assisted the students.

Senior School News Goodbye Year 12’S This week has been the final one for our Graduating class of 2013. As they move into the next phase of life and leave the safe confines of St Andrews, I know they take with them the values and skills that will see them successfully navigate through an often complex, challenging and exciting world. On behalf of all the staff, I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

Middle School News The Edge As I write this article the girls of Year 9 are arriving at the College for the first of their reflection days following the two weeks up at Googa. Having heard about ‘Googa’ for three terms, but having no real knowledge of the experience, it has been a revelation and a delight to observe the processes involved in ‘The Edge’. Throughout the course of my teaching career I have participated in about fifty school camps all of which have professed in some way or another to create an experience through which our children emerge as young adults ready to face the challenges of adulthood.

None of them have had the buildup of ‘The Edge’ nor, I believe, the lasting impact.

It is a significant statement by a school to allocate approximately ten percent of the school year to a programme like ‘The Edge’; however, those of us who attended the boys’ presentation evening a fortnight ago can attest to the significance of the event for those involved. This Friday the girls will have an opportunity to present their reflections upon their Googa experience and I warmly invite all families of students from Year 9 to share in this experience. I cannot thank Ms Colleen Ijurco enough on behalf of the College for her tireless work in organising ‘The Edge’ and also Mr Christophe Tanguy for his coordination of the reflection process and involvement in the entire programme.

MS Electives 2014 It has been an interesting process coordinating the Middle School Elective selections for the first time. I hope to have finalised subject selections for next year by the time this Bulletin is released. There are an enormous number of variables involved in this process and whilst we should be able to accommodate most requests for elective subjects there are bound to be some combinations that do not quite fit.

Student Development What is the good life?

Teenagers already have some reasonably strong views regarding this perennial question. Though some teenagers more easily elucidate their philosophy in speech, we can usually see through their actions what they value and how they think they should be living their life meaningfully. The reality is that young people, as well as adults have often put their trust in faulty ideas. In fact, many of us have learnt the hard way that our assumptions regarding how we should live well were based on false notions.

It is important to ask this question with young people and help them question their assumptions. Last week at Philosopher’s Lunch one student responded, ‘The getting of wisdom is most important’ another said ‘avoiding hardship or discomfort.’ At some level, both of these views are valid because they are deeply held by the individual, but to what degree will these statements lead us to very different experiences of life, the good life and what we were put on this earth to do?

Some ways you might explore wisdom with your children could be reading through Jesus’ Beattitudes in Matthew 5-7; and Jesus’ response to the Pharisees in Matthew 22:40. Jesus shows us a better way to live. He challenges prevailing wisdom of greatness or pleasure as ultimate ends. This is interesting dialogue to enter into regularly with teenagers, regarding the merit of these words, the potential transformative power (Matt. 7:7). To ask whether we are living according to faith and God’s word or in our own strength and possibly following other voices or ideas which may not be leading to good living at all.

Let it be a challenge to each of us as parents to dialogue with our children about the value of ideas they are engaging with in social media and other sources. Let us take up the challenge to engage with the prevailing views and encourage each other as parents to fight the good fight and educate our children in the way of life and wisdom.

Chaplains Chat Encountering God… Ways in which God encounters His people has been the theme of Chapel in our school over the past weeks. On one particular occasion Jesus encountered a Tax Collector named Zacchaeus.

This fellow was a crook and all the town of Jericho despised him due to his ‘robbery’ of them through illegitimate taxes.

Jesus actually went home with Zaccheaus and ate a meal in his home. Ultimately, Zacchaeus’ encounter of Jesus was totally life changing. His life was turned around and this restored his relationship with the people. Ultimately leading him to pay back 4 times the money he had crookedly acquired from them and living the rest of his life in relationship with God. People still encounter Jesus in similar ways today but generally those of us who recognize his call on our lives haven’t had such a massive ‘conversion’ experience. All people who encounter Christ through the Bible are transformed – our students at St Andrews are transformed as they encounter God in worship times and the daily activities of our school as God’s love is lived out.

The transformation may almost be imperceptible but God is certainly at work as His life, death and resurrection is proclaimed and lived out in our school. Just as Zaccheaus took Jesus back to his house for a meal – he is also hoping to travel home from school with each of us and spend 24/7 with us so that the transformation that he is carrying out may move from being imperceptible to completely life changing as it was for Zacchaeus.

A lot of fundraising and organisation has been put into this trip thanks to the tireless effort of the students and the events they have put together.

Year 11 student from St Andrews Lutheran College, Kelsey Caruana, shares some insight into what has been achieved so far, “We’ve held a lot of school fundraisers such as bake sales, a hot chocolate stall, a teacher version of “The Amazing Race”, a walkathon, as well as hosting two sausage sizzles with the assistance of the Lions and Leo’s club.”

All of the proceeds from these events will be put towards the construction of community ponds in the rural areas of Cambodia.

“The trip isn’t just about helping them while we’re there, but also about creating something that lasts beyond our stay and is invaluable to the locals. The community ponds are such an excellent way of empowering the community to help them build their own life.”

More fundraising has also come from the success of a College wide focus in August called Cambodia Month. On each day in August, there was a simple challenge for the family to adopt for the day.

For example, a person might have to donate 5c for every glass of water they drink that day, to highlight that many in Cambodia do not have access to clean water.

This method of fundraising was both fun and simple for all participating in the challenges, but it also raised awareness of some of the hardships the Cambodians have to face in everyday life.

As for any future plans leading up towards the trip, Kelsey says there is plenty to do, “I’m sure we will continue fundraising for the villages we meet in Cambodia, and build stronger relationships, not only with the Cambodian people, but with one another in the group.”

Overall, the campaign has been very successful, and the group heading to Cambodia is well prepared for the journey.

Cambodia Trip News It is only a few short weeks until a group of students and teachers, from both St Andrews Lutheran College and Grace Lutheran College, will be heading to Cambodia for the trip of a lifetime.

Through the Christian organisation, Australia Lutheran World Services, the group will be touring Cambodia in a bid to serve others and empower those in need.

Aside from sightseeing, their main focus is to visit the rural areas of Cambodia to view the genuine lifestyle of those in the villages, and to support them by assisting in their daily tasks.

Careers News Year 12 Publication Of Final Results Year 12 students will be able to access their results online at the Student Connect website (www.studentconnect.qsa. qld.edu.au). All results contributing to the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and OPs and FPs will be available in students’ learning accounts from 9 am on Saturday 14 December 2013. Students will need to have activated their learning account well in advance of this date and will need their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password (first four digits of student birth date) to log in and check their results. Students have of course been given this information on numerous occasions, but if this information has been misplaced, students should contact Mrs Wrigley as soon as possible.

Students will begin receiving their final documents from the QSA in the mail from Monday 16 December 2013. These documents will include the QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education), a Tertiary Entrance Statement (for OP eligible students) and a Senior Statement which lists a student’s achievements from their senior years of education. Students without an OP can find out their QTAC OP ineligible selection rank via QTAC’s Current Applicant online service if they are a QTAC applicant or by phoning QTAC if they are not a QTAC applicant (1300GOQTAC or 1300 467 822) from Monday 30 December.

University information sessions AFTER OP results are released Many universities hold information sessions in December in the week directly after the release of the OP results for students who having received their Year 12 results are reviewing their QTAC preferences and/or deciding on their future direction. The following are examples of these sessions.

If student contact details change over the coming weeks, they must update their address and contact details via QTAC’s Current Applicant online services to ensure their QTAC correspondence is received. Senior Administration/Mrs Wrigley should also be informed so that the necessary changes can be made to the QSA data.

QTAC Contact Details: Students and parents are reminded that QTAC can be phoned on 1300 467 822, faxed on 3367 1164, emailed via their enquiry service at www.qtac. edu.au and can be followed on Facebook and Twitter CHANGING QTAC PREFERENCES: Year 12 students wishing to modify their preferences or add courses not previously listed on their application, can do so on their online application via QTAC’s Current Applicant online service. (Do not start a new application!) The final date to change preferences for the 16 January 2014 major offer round is 8 January 2014. When changing preferences, make all changes BEFORE clicking the ‘save’ button. Each time a student “saves” it will cost $34!

CHECKING FOR AN OFFER: Once an offer round has occurred, successful applicants will be advised by email from QTAC that they have an offer and to access their online application via the Current Applicant online service to view and print out their offer letter and to respond to the offer.

Offer letters are not mailed to applicants. Students will receive only one offer from a university. If you were not offered a place into one of your preferred courses in the major offer round, contact QTAC Information Services for further information about why you were not successful in gaining a place.

RESPONDING TO AN OFFER: The QTAC website has detailed information about the options you have when responding to a QTAC offer. If a response has not been received at QTAC by the specified date, you may automatically lose the course place offered and not be considered in any future offer rounds. Following the offer round of January 16, students have until 10 am Thursday 23 January to respond.

ENROLMENT: In addition to responding to QTAC, you must complete the enrolment requirements of the institution to which you have gained entry. You will be mailed an enrolment package by the institution or linked from the QTAC website to the enrolment website of the institution.

FINANCING TERTIARY STUDY: Students are reminded that their QTAC GUIDE and the QTAC website has much helpful information regarding study fees and costs on pages 17-19.

There are several helpful websites but an excellent starting point for researching financial help is www.studyassist.gov. au SAIS Or Subject Achievement Indicators One of the many important procedures at the conclusion of year is the assigning of SUBJECT ACHIEVEMENT INDICATORS. SAIs are numbers given to OP ELIGIBLE students in AUTHORITY subjects for the purpose of comparing achievement within the subject group.

In subjects where there are FOURTEEN OR MORE OP eligible students in the class a special numbering system is used where students are assigned numbers between 200 (for the LOWEST student) and 400 (for the TOP student) to represent their position within the group.

This year at St Andrews, SAIs for groups 14 or more students will be calculated for ENGLISH, MATHS B, BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY and BCT. In subjects where there are fewer than 14 OP eligible students in the class the SAIs are expressed in terms of ‘level’ and rung on the R6 ladder, for example HA9.(High Achievement 9) Each SAI has meaning ONLY when viewed in relation to the SAIs of the other OP eligible students in that subject at St Andrews Lutheran College.

As required by the Queensland Studies Authority, St Andrews will publish SAIs to students on Wednesday 20 November from 8.30 am until 2 pm in Mrs Wrigley’s office in Senior Administration.

It is the student’s responsibility to check this information at this time. They should check to see that they have been placed in the correct position compared with their classmates. If they think might be an anomaly or if it is something they do not understand, students may talk with Mrs Wrigley, their subject teacher or the subject Head of Department.

SAIs are important for OPs and students should find the time to check them!

Scholarship Recipients receive $10,000 a year during the completion of a standard medical degree at their chosen university.

Year 10 Career Plans During the final weeks of the term, Year 10 students will have the opportunity to update their Career Plans started earlier in the year. LOTE News Languages at St Andrews Australia is one of the few OECD nations which does not have compulsory language study for all students right throughout secondary schooling. At St Andrews, we are fortunate to have a dynamic foreign languages program, which students can study from Prep right through to Year 12.

There are many benefits for child or young person learning a second language while they are still at school. These include: •

Improved cognitive development through higher order thinking skill usage. Learning another language is challenging and involves encoding and decoding meaning using symbols (words) in patterns to receive and produce meaning.

A number of universities now provide bonus rank points for students who study a language at senior in relation to university entrance (see QTAC.edu.au for more information) and in an increasingly global world employers are looking for employees with another language.

Becoming a well-rounded global citizen with an openminded and curious view of the world. Culture is an integral part of learning another language: contact with international visitors on exchange and through Skype, immersion in Japanese/German music, cuisine, dance, etiquette and so forth enables your child to develop their interest in the world and an appreciation of other perspectives and traditions.

Building confidence through supported risk-taking.

Expressing yourself in another language takes courage, grit and resilience. At St Andrews language learning is supported by engaging, ‘hands-on’ methods (gestures), real-life and life-like tasks, the use of visual resources and technology (online tools plus classroom iPads) in a structured approach so as to maximise engagement and learning both at school and at home. The goal is to support students to develop confidence and fluency by taking risks to grow in their language skills.

Next year, Ms Tara Bible is joining the Language Department here at St Andrews to teach German, adding to an already vibrant Department.

Art News PAT 2014 As we move rapidly through Term 4 a reminder that unless a cancellation notice is received, PAT enrolments will roll over into 2014. If your child does not intend to continue their lessons, please complete the online form on the College Website. We now have waitlists for many of our PAT Teachers so it is important to advise us if you no longer require a lesson.

St Andrews P & F News The AGM was held last week and the following members of the St Andrews community were elected to the P & F for 2014: President – Daniel Renneberg Vice President – Julieanne Andrews Treasurer – Michelle Brown Secretary – Nicole Ainger It was great to see the familiar faces at the meeting as well as some very welcome new parents from 2G. I think they were pleasantly surprised at the number of projects the P & F has funded around the College and those planned for 2014.

We are interested to hear from anyone who has any ideas for fundraising next year, as the Fete will not be held until 2015. There are a number of large projects which have been suggested for the P & F fund, including a Grandstand and fit out of the new Tuckshop which will be built under the CRC in 2014.

The first meeting of 2014 will be held on the 12 March and we will be looking to introduce a new “Terms of Reference” to replace the existing Constitution. The Constitution included the business units (Uniform and Tuckshop) which the P & F is no longer responsible for. The draft “Terms of Reference” are available on the website and we welcome any comments you may have at the next meeting or by emailing pandf@salc.qld.edu.au
