Issue 13 / 18 October 2013 Year 12 Formal – This Saturday night (19 October) our Year 12s will be celebrating their formal at the Royal Pines Resort. Parents are invited to attend pre-dinner drinks starting at 5.30pm.

Middle & Senior School News Presentation Night A celebration of excellence, and one of the most significant events in the life of St Andrews, is being held on Tuesday 12 November. Presentation Night is the only evening event in the College’s calendar that is compolsory for all students in Years 4-12. Awards for excellence in the academic, sporting, citizenship and cultural arenas across the various year levels will be presented on the night.

Parents who model commitment and support for this College celebration, whether their child receives an award or not, send a very positive message to their children, and one which may well stay with them throughout their adult life.

Students who are not directly involved in the proceedings will sit with their class, supervised by members of staff.

Please remember that everyone needs to be seated by 6.45pm at the latest for a prompt 7.00 pm start.

Students who are involved on the evening (Awardees, Performers and Year 12 students) will be attending rehearsals at the Convention Centre throughout the day on the Tuesday. Sports uniform is to be worn. Award recipients will receive a letter from the College next week.

Cultural and Sports Award Evenings The Cultural Awards evening which was held at the end of Week 1 was another wonderful showcase of our talented students and a true celebration of the significant depth and breadth of the Arts across the College. On Monday 18 November, our Sports Awards evening will be held in the Theatre at 6.30 pm. At that time, we will recognise our talented sportsmen/sportswomen.

Year 12 – A busy time ahead In the coming weeks we will celebrate the schooling journey of our Year 12 students as we prepare to farewell them from our College. But they are not done yet and with exams ahead, I encourage all of the students to stay focused and to work hard. To follow are some important reminders for Year 12 students and families.

Exam Week – Year 12 Exams start on Monday 4 November.

Valedictory Dinner The Valedictory dinner and presentation of diplomas will be held at Bond University at 6.30pm on Thursday 14 November. Students are asked to wear the formal school uniform on this occasion.

Closing Chapel The closing chapel will be held on the morning of Friday 15 November and will be followed by a special morning tea for graduates and their families. Should you be yet to receive any of the details regarding these events please call the Senior School Administration.

Student Free Day – Monday 21 October Teachers around the state will be moderating Year 12 student work on Monday 21 October. We have several teachers from St Andrews on panels. All other staff from P-10 will be engaged in meetings on this day. This will be a pupil free day for all students P-12.

P&F Pink Day Morning Tea / Cancer Awareness and Mufti Day – Tuesday 22 October On Tuesday 22 October all students and staff will show their support for Cancer Awareness and Research by dressing in Pink or Yellow.

School Captain Speeches (24 October) Year 11 students who have nominated for captaincy in 2014 will address the student body on Thursday 24 October at 8.30am in the Worship Centre as part of the Leadership nominations process. Parents are welcome to attend.

Orientation Day for Middle School - “A Day With A Difference” (Friday 1 November) On Friday 1 November the Year 7 class of 2014 (including current Year 6 and new children) and new Year 8 students along with their parents will attend a morning session from 8:30am – 12:00noon to experience what lies ahead next year. This special opportunity is designed to provide students and their parents the opportunity to come in and ‘try out’ life in the Middle School. Parents will be involved in sessions aimed at helping them prepare for their child’s adolescent years, and how to ‘cyber proof’ their child while students will glimpse what lies ahead in the next phase of their exciting learning journey – Middle School!

Many parents have queried if we still produce an assessment calendar. These can be downloaded from the front page of Moodle for each year level. All students should have these downloaded but, can I strongly urge parents to do the same and place it on the fridge or your child’s bedroom door so everyone knows what is coming up in terms of assessment, exams and excursions. Senior School News Positive Psychology We have talked a lot this year with our students about improving wellbeing, resilience (Grit), happiness, values and character strengths. Much of this has been based on the work of Dr Martin Seligman, the ‘father’ of positive psychology and author of Flourish and Authentic Happiness.

Seligman has developed a model for how one can improve their wellbeing and happiness to flourish. He calls this PERMA or Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment and our students in the Senior School will be focusing on this during Term 4. However, some simple suggestions from Sonja Lyubomirsky, University of California Psychologist include: Counting your blessings (a gratitude journal), acts of kindness, savour the joys of life (a sunrise or walk on the beach), thank a mentor, learn to forgive, invest time and energy in your friends and family, take care of your body and develop strategies to deal with hardship or stress.

Congratulations: • Kye Wylde was recently selected into the Triathlon Queensland Junior Talent Squad Team 16-19 years for the 2013/2014 season. This squad is the Junior Performance Pathway Program that assists athletes develop to the national Talent Academy, QAS/Elite teams.

Kye will be attending the ITU Australian Junior Triathlon series this year and next which is very competitive due to the number of talented athletes competing.

Middle School News Year 7 and 9 Camping Experiences As I write this article the Year 9 boys have had their first night at Googa having spent the last week in a variety of service-learning activities throughout the community. It is my first taste of ‘The Edge’ programme and I have been incredibly impressed with the experiences that we place in front of our young men and women. Such opportunities provide a richness to our children’s education that is very difficult (if not impossible) to replicate on campus. There is understandably some trepidation on behalf of both parents and students at the length of time spent away at Googa; however, the benefits to our young men and women seem only to multiply throughout the second week. Enormous thanks must go to Mrs Colleen Ijurco for her tireless work and enthusiasm in making The Edge come to fruition in 2013. I look forward to spending some time at Googa in the coming weeks.

A (metaphoric and literal) long way from Googa is our Nation’s capital where the Year 7 cohort spent the final week of last term. It was an incredibly informative and delightful trip combing the obvious educational elements of Canberra with the entertaining benefits of cold and snowy weather.

The Year 7s were simply a fantastic group of students with whom to spend a week. Their enthusiasm for learning and ability to delight in each other’s company made the week an absolute pleasure. Thank you to all of the attending staff but, in particular, to Mrs Karen Hamilton for her magnificent organization. I look forward to Canberra in 2014.

Student Development Applying past knowledge to new situations (HOM) On Friday young Epicureans gather to share lunch, cake and ideas. It might be called ‘Philosophers lunch’ and it is an example of how students can learn to ‘apply past knowledge to new situations’ – an important habit of mind.

Learning from the ideas of the past may be a sharing of wisdom and hopefully part of the development of intellect, character and friendship with others.

Whilst we are blessed to have some fantastic facilities at the College, however the use of these after hours and on weekends is not allowed without the express permission of the Principal. Over the last few weeks we have had to ask some families using the ovals and playgrounds on weekends to move on as this is the only time our grounds have a time to recover from the collective wear of 1,100 students.

Please respect that the College grounds are private property and that general community use is restricted for our students during the week only.

Art News Student Feature - Mitch Wynter Mitch (Gr 9 ) is one of our most outstanding dancers at St Andrews. He has been an active participant in the Cultural Life of the College this year – winning St Andrews Got Talent as well as dancing in our Middle School, Senior School and Combined Dance Troupes.

One student commented last week, “Finally we’re discussing ideas that keep me up late at night!”

Philosopher’s lunch is a great opportunity for students, especially in Middle School, for academic extension. Through each term a curriculum of ‘History of Ideas’ and ‘Ethics’ can be developed and broaden and deepen their understanding of human knowledge and give some insight into how knowledge is built.

We’ve begun this term with a ‘History of Ideas’ and students will experience that philosophy can be fun. The opportunity to do this at lunch will give them a place to hang out, out of the sun, and to belong to a group that is an interesting mix of friends and ideas. Within the lunch experiences students will have to learn to listen more accurately, to develop conversation from other people’s ideas, and realize that they are part of a set of ongoing conversations for humanity.

Aspiring towards wisdom is a worthwhile aim for each of us and as students expose themselves to this Virtue they will be forming positive learning habits. If your child is interested, remind them about Philosophers lunch in E1 Friday lunchtimes.

LOTE News Win Prizes: In-house SALC Languages Competition Each term, students at St Andrews learn how to ask and answer key questions based on the topic of inquiry. This is a fundamental skill for language acquisition as students use language for real-life and lifelike purposes, substituting information about themselves into patterns which leads to greater retention of vocabulary and language structures.

Each year, selected students have the opportunity to learn a set speech for the MLTAQ Speech Competition in August which is held at Griffith University. This term all students who learn Japanese or German will have a chance to WIN: iPods, McDonald’s vouchers and Other prizes by participating in the inaugural SALC Foreign Language Speech Competition. The content is NOT a set speech, rather, students will be asked questions with which they already have some familiarity from the Q and A patterns for the term-by-term topics they have already covered. Heats will be held in class this term in Years 7-8, with a final being held in the final weeks of Term. Students can access a copy of the Language Overviews with relevant Question and Answer Patterns on Moodle from next week.

The Amazing Race – Walk4Cambodia Fundraiser Congratulations to all the students who participated so well in the Amazing Race on the first Thursday of term. Students of all ages took up the challenge of locating staff secreted away all over the College campus. The spirit in which the event was completed by the students was fantastic. Many students successfully completed the task – connecting the diverse pieces of trivia with the appropriate staff. Thank you to the staff who volunteered secrets from their past.

St Andrews P & F News Welcome back to Term 4. A short term for many students and we wish all the Senior Students the best for their exams.

The final meeting of the P & F for 2013 will be the AGM which is held on Wednesday 6th November at 7pm. So mark the date in your calendar. All positions will be open for nomination, so if you need any information on any of the roles, please contact one of the members of the current P & F. Please come along, as we require a quorum for the AGM and it is important you get involved for next year.

Funding and Projects Hopefully everyone has noticed the extension to the bus shelter, which was built during the recent school holidays.

The P & F has funded this project which hopefully will make more room for pickups when the weather is not good to us.

The P & F has also provided the College with funds for removable AFL goal posts for the lower oval, which we hope will be enjoyed by many for years to come. A new sound system for the MPH has been approved and should be installed in Term 4. A climbing wall for the MPH has also been approved as was an E-library, which includes over 400 book titles for use by all students. Banners which will encourage student’s creativity and sense of wellbeing in the College have also been purchased.

At the last meeting further funds were requested towards the Year 12 Common Room, which all students at St Andrews will eventually be able to utilise. The P & F felt it was important the Year 12 students had somewhere they could use and make their own.

A further donation has also gone towards funding a Lego Robotic Club which we are sure will benefit many children.

These are only a few examples of suggestions from parents attending P & F meetings which have come to fruition.

Another important reason why you should get involved and have input into how the funds you help raise are put towards projects within the College.

Further information on the Grandstand should be available at the AGM, plans have been prepared, and the school is awaiting quotes to determine the cost. Approval for the expenditure will be sought at future P & F meetings.

Uniforms for 2014 Dear Parents and Students, To assist you in your preparation for 2014, we would like to share some important information with you regarding uniforms. As your child moves from one year level to the next, there are sometimes changes to the required uniform.

Below are details of the changes that will affect your child if he/she is moving into the following year levels in 2014.

YEAR 1  

A formal uniform is now required to be worn 3 days a week.

The sports uniform (same as Prep uniform) is worn 2 days a week

Girls Formal Uniform Formal Girls Hat ($45), Formal Dress ($70), White ankle socks with navy stripes ($7.50), Formal Jumper ($78), Navy 70 denier tights ($7 optional for winter). Black leather lace-up shoes (no buckles or Velcro) are also required but not sold in the Uniform Shop.

Boys Formal Uniform Formal Boys Hat ($45), White Short Sleeve Shirt ($30), Navy Elastic Back Shorts ($25), Navy Knee High Formal Socks ($7.50), Formal Jumper ($78). Navy Formal Trousers ($30) are optional for winter. Black leather lace-up shoes (no Velcro) are also required but are not sold in the Uniform Shop.

YEARS 2 & 3 - no changes (Tip - Year 3 save your sports shoes for Year 4 camp next year!)

YEAR 4    

A navy sports shirt ($35) is required for Friday sport.

The coloured house shirt is now only worn one day a week.

Boys only - the navy elastic backed shorts change to zip up formal shorts ($30) worn with a regulation black belt ($18) Regulation St Andrews swimwear or athletics singlet /shorts may be required if selected to compete in Inter-Lutheran and/or District competitions from Years 4 -12.

YEAR 5 & 6 no changes.

YEAR 7        

The formal uniform is now worn 4 days a week – Monday to Thursday.

The navy sports uniform is worn to school on Fridays for interschool sport.

The sports uniform is to be brought to school and changed into for all PE and sports electives.

The floppy sports hat may still be worn or can be replaced with a baseball cap ($15).

Girls - the formal uniform changes to a skirt ($55), blouse ($42) and formal sockettes ($7.80).

Navy 70 denier tights are optional in winter ($7-8).

Boys - long grey trousers ($35) are optional in Term 2 & 3.

Boys and Girls both wear low ankle sports socks ($7.80).

YEAR 8  The formal uniform is now worn Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.  The navy sports uniform is now worn on Thursdays for inter-school sport.

YEAR 9

no changes

YEAR 10     

All Senior students require a College blazer which must be brought to school for photos in the first week of 2014. Please contact the Uniform Shop immediately if you have not already ordered or arranged a blazer.

The blazer is worn to and from school in Terms 2 and 3. The formal jumper is now only required for extremely cold days, worn under the blazer.

Girls - the formal uniform remains the same with the addition of a button-on tie ($20).

Boys - the formal shirt changes to a style suitable for a tie (no tartan trim on the pocket $30).

The boys winter formal uniform (terms 2 & 3) comprises of the senior short or long sleeve shirt ($30/$35), College tie ($18), grey trousers ($35) and plain navy business socks. These items must be purchased before school starts as they are required for photos.

YEAR 11 & 12 - no changes _______________________________________________________________________ NB: All students require a tracksuit jacket to wear with their sports uniform (optional Senior Jersey for Year 12) and a formal jumper to wear with their formal uniform (Blazer for Years 10-12).

These items are not interchangeable. _______________________________________________________________________

UNIFORM SHOP INFORMATION SECOND HAND INTAKE Items being submitted for second hand must be received before the end of Term 4, if you wish to use the credit to purchase uniforms in January. Sorry, but items submitted in January will not be processed until early February after the back to school rush eases.

AVOID THE RUSH – BUY OR ORDER NOW! We encourage you to visit the Uniform Shop in Term 4 to purchase or order the uniform items you require for next year. There is plenty of stock available. If your child has a ‘growth spurt’, sizes can be exchanged in January providing items are returned in a saleable condition.

SAVE TIME - EMAIL YOUR ORDER. If you know what you need, please email us your list so we can have it ready for you when you come in. It saves time for you and us! And if you include your card details, we can have your payment processed so you can just pick it up and go.

Layby facilities are also available for pick up at the end of the term or in January. Regular payments are not necessary but can be made in person or over the phone.

OPENING TIMES: The Uniform Shop will close at 10am on Friday 6th December 2013 and will re-open mid January 2014.

GOLD COAST HOSPITAL AND HEALTH SERVICES – ORAL HEALTH SERVICES ORAL HEALTH CARE MATTERS Did you know that Gold Coast Hospital and Health Services – Oral Health Services in both the community and school dental clinics accept Medicare Teen Dental Scheme Vouchers?

Good oral health care is important for young people. The government has provided Medicare Teen Dental Scheme Vouchers to help enable and maintain good oral health and preventative care. These vouchers can be presented to private dentists or Gold Coast Hospital and Health Services – Oral Health Services, including a community or school dental clinic.

Children attending schools up to the end of Year 10 who present a Teen Dental Voucher with Gold Coast Oral Health Services will receive a comprehensive examination, x-rays, scale, clean and a full course of care. Children in Years 11 and 12 in receipt of a voucher can only be seen by Gold Coast Oral Health Services if the eligibility criteria is met. They will then be placed on a waiting list to receive a comprehensive examination, x-rays, scale, clean and a full course of care.

If the Teen Dental Voucher has been used at a private dental practice, completion of the private dentist’s treatment plan will need to be undertaken privately at own cost. Gold Coast Hospital and Health Services will only be able to provide Emergency Care for these children, not a full course of care as prescribed by the private dentist.

Gold Coast Hospital and Health Services – Oral Health Services have qualified and experienced dentists, oral health therapists, dental therapists and dental assistants who work together to provide a range of oral healthcare services to meet your child’s specific oral health needs in a caring environment.

As the Teen Dental Voucher expires by 31.12.13, it is important that you arrange your appointment as soon as possible by telephoning the Gold Coast Oral Health Services Call Centre on 1300 300 850. Oral health services are also provided during all school holiday periods.
