This week we hosted students from Higashino High School. There is no understating the importance of these cultural exchanges. Thank you to all of the school ‘buddies’, host families and to Mrs Hill for creating these opportunities to broaden our thinking and to make connections beyond our shores a reality. It is simply so much more than a language exchange program.
Last week a group of Year 11 students experienced firsthand the plight of homeless people and raised awareness of “Rosies” by sleeping outside the Worship Centre on Monday and Tuesday nights. They each donated $30 to charity and survived on $10 worth of food to last them Monday through Wednesday. These young people, along with peers in Year 11, have continued to help “Rosies” outreach by giving up a Friday night to talk to and connect with some of the Gold Coast’s homeless and disadvantaged in Southport and Surfers Paradise.
A reminder to all current Middle School and Years 5 and 6 families that the Middle School Expo will be held on Monday 8 August from 5.00pm-7.00pm. Classes for students in Years 7-9 will finish at 12.40pm on that day so that students and staff can set up for the evening showcase of life in the Middle School. Students are free to go home for the afternoon or to remain at the College and will be supervised and assisting with the set up. Please ensure you have returned your permission form to Middle School Administration.
Eight Futsal teams competed in the South Queensland Champion of Champions competition last week and I would like to congratulate all of the students who played, on their sportsmanship and athleticism. The 13 girls and boys and the 15 boys have all qualified for the Australasian Titles by finishing in the Top 4. I’d like to thank Mr Mark Hibbs, Mr Paul McGilveray, Mr Graeme Schache and Mrs Libby Wood for their work with these teams. Our growing Futsal program continues to provide great opportunities for students to extend their skills as players, and to develop teamwork and grit.
Chaplains Chat “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” - Hebrews 10:24-25 (NKJV) What a privilege it is to teach Christian Studies to students within the College. As we work through the curriculum it provides scope and purpose to examine what is important in life. The insights I have gained personally down through the years and continue to bump into are so helpful. I thoroughly enjoy my role as a Physical Education and Science teacher. It was these areas that drew me into the teaching profession many years ago but these subjects tend to deal with important facts but don’t leave the room Christian Studies allows to investigate the real nitty-gritty of life.
August marks the start of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod season. Best wishes to all of the students involved. The Performing Arts department are also already planning for key annual performances with the Singing concert to be held at the Arts Centre, Basement; A Senior Drama Performance at Spotlight Theatre and our Senior School Presentation Night at Jupiter’s main theatre. Year 11 Camp Year 11 students will attend a leadership camp at Emu Gully next Monday - Wednesday. The camp aims to build leadership and teamwork skills across the cohort. Following that experience, the process of nominating for elected leadership positions in 2017 will commence. The camp experience, is both physically intense, mentally challenging and an incredible bonding experience for the whole cohort. Enjoy your time at camp! Mufti Day Next Tuesday is also our Mufti Day for Term 3. The theme is Kokoda Youth Foundation. Please encourage your child to bring in a gold coin and to come dressed in camouflage. Water pistols and replica guns and weapons are not acceptable. Guidelines for appropriate free dress clothing can be found in the Student Diary. Year 12 CS is currently investigating work/life balance and the pursuit of employment in the future that will be life giving for the person engaged within it and for the wider community. Challenging questions are asked of our students. Such as, will you pursue work that will pay well, simply for the pay packet, or will you pursue work that contributes to the greater good? What are your motives as you consider your future? What values will you hold as your guide in life ahead? Year 9 CS is looking at the difficult question of ‘who are you’ - what is your true identity? As we investigated this question, we arrived at the idea that the values we hold as most important and the ability to act on these values speak most loudly to who we really are. These areas of investigation can be quite contentious as the subject endeavours to look at the very essence of what really matters. However the opportunity afforded students to genuinely consider what matters most is so worthwhile. We live in a culture that values personal freedom and individual rights. We all benefit from this as it allows each of us freedom to pursue what we think is most important. But the shortcomings associated with this are significant. The constant focus on the individual and pursuing individual fulfilment tends to isolate people and work against the strengthening of family connection and living in community. Thankfully, God values every individual and also longs for us to share life together. Our God is a God of love and love only occurs in relationships. Unfortunately, our culture promotes the individual above all else. At St Andrews, God leads us to value the individual but we recognise that as individuals we are designed to live in relationship with others and in particular in relationship with our Creator. It is within this relationship that life makes sense and we are led to be people of love and action. It is a great place to be. Graeme Schache Chaplain
Middle School News Subject Selection for 2017 Subject Information Booklets for 2017 are handed out at the annual Middle School Expo. For the past few years the College has used an online preference system for allocating these electives. All students enrolled in the Middle School for 2017 will shortly gain access to this system and be able to register preferences. Any students who are unable to collect a Subject Information Booklet from the Expo will be able to collect one from Middle School Administration. It is important to remember that while every effort is made to ensure that students gain their top preferences in elective subjects, this is not possible if some subjects are oversubscribed with enthusiastic students. Debating Two years ago the College entered a single Year 8 team in the Gold Coast Schools Debating Competition.This year it has risen to eight teams including four from the Middle School. Our Year 8 team under the guidance of Mrs Hamilton have qualified through to the quarter finals of this competition. Congratulations to these students and to Mrs Hamilton for their dedication to learning the skills of this very worthwhile activity. We look forward to students becoming involved again in 2017.
Student Development Invitation to Growing Good Men At St Andrews we are intent upon guiding young men and women with wisdom that will help build them into resilient, values conscious and spiritually aware contributors to their community. The ‘Girls With A Purpose’ program for young ladies transitioning into adolescence and the ‘Growing Good Men’ project provide some unique opportunities for individual growth through adolescents. Over the next four Thursdays (August 11, 18, 25 and September 1) a group of young St Andrews men are invited to take part in the ‘Growing Good Men’ project. This provides opportunity to explore their growth and identity through a creative work project, building on their sense of belonging, growing a sense of leadership and sharing wisdom regarding the journey of being a boy and becoming a man. Senior School News Flourishing in the Senior School Day of Hope Resilience – The reality is that life is not fair, we are not all equal or have the same opportunities. Sometimes due to circumstances we are disadvantaged and at other times hold the advantage. However, we all have a talent, a gift or a skill to build on. But, not everyone has the capacity and motivation to pick themselves up after a setback or when facing a challenge. This is called resilience. The ability to bounce back, having learned from one’s mistakes and prepared to try again. How many of us give up at the first hurdle or obstacle, throw in the towel when we don’t get it right or look to blame another source for our failure, mistake, weakness? As our guest speaker, Glen Gerreyn, pointed out “Life is going to be hard whether you pursue your dreams or not, so you might as well go for your dreams.” Kobasa describes three elements to resilience including: 1. Challenge – difficulty is a challenge, an opportunity to learn and not a reason to give up 2. Commitment – stay true to your purpose and goals 3. Control – focus on the things you can control and don’t sweat the stuff that is out of your hands
In Summary – Practice these tips to improve your resilience: 1. Be aware of where you’re up to 2. Invest in yourself: exercise, sleep, nutrition 3. Get in tune with your thoughts and your emotions

Only 25 Under 16 players were selected and Bailey is the only Queenslander. • The Year 11 Christian Studies class, Mr Schache, Ms Yeo and Mrs Warner who slept at school in tents last week and lived on basic rations as part of raising money and awareness for the homeless. The students who braved the elements included Zak Lopez, Jack May, Kara Batchelor, Milli Nyssen, Liam Nash, Anna Tyrrell, Jessica Osborne, Liliana Mikami, Keely McVay, Zak Kouaider, Huntah Fenton, Dayna Nicholls, Connor Madigan, Abbi Lowery and Rory McLynskey. This raised much needed fund for Rosies.

LOTE News Languages Events this Term: At the end of Week 2 we farewelled our new German friends from Erich Kästner Schule and Oldenfelde Stadtteilschule. DANKE SCHÖN to the wonderful, hospitable St Andrews families who hosted these students for the 10 days. The tears upon departure spoke volumes about the connections that were formed during our reciprocal visits. We look forward to meeting up with these friends and making new ones during the next Study Tour to Germany at the end of 2017.

We welcomed our Japanese visitors at the end of Week 3 and look forward to connecting and making new ‘tomodachi’ during their visit. Higashino High School has been visiting us each year now for a whole decade! In mid September, we are sending a group of eighteen Year 9 and 10 students on a Study Tour of Japan for 16 days to experience the amazing sights, sounds and tastes of Japan including a homestay with a Japanese family and a program of cultural events at our sister school. The Middle School Expo is on Monday. Please come along and listen to Mrs Hill present the HOW and WHY of learning a second language, the benefits of this challenging goal and paths to success. The MLTAQ Gold Coast Speech Contest is on Sunday 14 August at Griffith University. Selected students should observe practice times as informed by their teachers. “A good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are.” We are so fortunate as a College community to be blessed with not only committed and enthusiastic staff, but also talented coaches who willingly give of their time to nurture our students sporting prowess. Whether it be Touch, Futsal, Netball, Athletics or Basketball, students can engage in a comprehensive sports program which includes before or after school training as well as major tournaments. However, this year efforts have been made to supplement the already existing programs with some quality external coaching. I would like to highlight two of these coaches and invite students to take up the opportunities they provide. Nicole Cusack – Term 4 Netball Excellence We have been very fortunate to secure Nicole Cusack as our signature coach for the new Netball Excellence program which will be offered in Term 4. Annual Composers Competition 2016 It is wonderful to see these talented students rewarded for their commitment to not only write their works but also to develop and rehearse them for performance on the day. It was a very positive experience for all involved and certainly a celebration of the creative arts. Netball – Vicki Wilson Cup and the Hinterland Club Championships Over the past couple of weeks both our Senior and Junior development teams have competed in local tournaments. It was pleasing to see the girls push themselves physically and develop their skills and teamwork throughout these fixtures. The development squad will test their skills again soon in another Sunday tournament, and both Senior and Development Teams have an upcoming match against a visiting team from Singapore.
Futsal – Champion of Champion Results Last week we had eight teams represent the College at the Champion of Champion’s Futsal Titles. All students represented the College and themselves extremely well. I am pleased to announce that three of these teams have qualified for the Australasian titles in November. • • •

District Sport News Hinterland District and South Coast Sport Trials St Andrews continues to have numerous students achieving selection in Representative teams through the Hinterland District and South Coast Regional School Sport trials. Latest achievements include: • Jordyn Hinds has been selected to attend the final trial for the Hinterland District 12 years Cricket team. • Joesi Gisinger was a member of the South Coast 11 years Netball team which won their State Championships. Hinterland District School Sport Track and Field Trials The Hinterland Track and Field Trials were held Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 August. St Andrews had fifty athletes from 10 to 17 years competing over the two days. We look forward to publishing some results very soon.
Years 7-12 Athletics Carnival The Years 7-12 Athletics Carnival was held on Thursday 14 July at Pizzey Park Athletics Track. It was a fantastic day of competition with Jubi being victorious. We were all impressed with the participation of the students and the great spirit and enthusiasm shown by all. J

She had an amazing week and had some fantastic experiences.
Before this competition her best round of golf was 89. On day one of the competition she hit an 86 and then on day three Emily hit 83 and came 13th for the round. That great round brought her up a position and she was thrilled to finish in the top 20.
Olympic Games We wish ex-St Andrews students James Roberts (Swimming) and Mackenzie Arnold (Soccer) all the best as they represent Australia at the Olympic Games. P & F News Trivia Night The P & F Olympic Trivia Night is coming up on Saturday 20 August at 6pm, trivia kicking off at 7pm. Only a few tables left, so book your table of 8 now! Sensory Playground A new Sensory Playground is complete in Junior School with a number of different activities to stimulate their young minds. Mr Schumacher came to the P & F with ideas for the new playground many months ago. The P & F are proud to have funded this for the College. Bus Shelter A PA system has been installed into the bus shelter. Making a huge improvement for the volunteers, the children can hear their names being called clearly now. Ampitheatre Transformation of the old tuckshop area into the new amphitheatre is complete and is a great looking area for all children at St Andrews. This is a great area for a new learning hub within the College. Community Event It was decided to run a community event in Term 4 to allow students, staff and parents to come together to support the J Block redevelopment. Details of the night will be sent out when finalised. Committee Member Profile: Jeffrey Bauman, Vice President I have a daughter in 3C she is in Jubi and has been at St Andrews since Prep and absolutely loves everyday she is at school. She is in the Semitones Choir and dances with Animi in Jazz and Style it up. My wife works in the beauty industry and is in the process of building a new shop in Burleigh. I’m employed in a small family business that manufactures new windows and doors, also in Burleigh. My hobby is surfing down at Currumbin Alley with some of the teachers and parents from St Andrews. The ConocoPhillips Science Experience is a fun 3 or 4 days of science activities for Year 9 and 10 students in 2016. Each program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work. The program takes place in over thirty-five universities and tertiary institutions, within many different laboratories and lecture theatres. Participants perform experiments in the l aboratories, meet and hear senior lecturers in the lecture theatres, attend site visits and walk around and experience what it is like to be on the campus of a university or tertiary institution. More than 65,000 students have taken this rare opportunity, up to date. The program also provides information about further studies in science, technology and engineering. It highlights the wide range of careers that allow students to pursue their interest and abilities in the sciences. One aspect of the program often commented on by participants is the opportunity to meet and share ideas with students from different schools. Each program includes a BBQ or other social activity.
