This week we welcomed students from Higashino School, our Japanese sister school who were with us on cultural exchange for the week. Thank you to Mrs Hill and all of the host families for ensuring their stay was a memorable experience.

Last week a number of events were held at the College as part of our 20th Anniversary celebrations. Our Whole of College photo was an event in itself! Please keep an eye out for the photo which will be sent home with the oldest child in each family in the coming weeks. The Gala concert, held last weekend, was an inspiring, astonishing, and emotion evoking celebration of our musically gifted students and families, past and present. Thank you to Ms Scott, Ms Moore, Mr Oakley-Grant and the rest of the Arts staff for continuing to inspire and nurture the gifts and talents of the students. The students themselves were exceptional.

August is Cambodia month and in an ongoing effort to raise funds for clean drinking water, and community ponds the team of students who are travelling to Cambodia at the end of the year sold Hot Chocolates in the COLA as part of Mufti-Day. By now you should have received your STAR Magazine and Cambodia calendar for the month of August.

Congratulations to all the performers! We also held a founder’s cocktail party to celebrate those who in the early years had the initial vision for, faith in, and passionate persistence and commitment to the development of St Andrews Lutheran College. Last Sunday, Pastor Terry turned the sod on the 20th Anniversary project site for the Labyrinth and in his address acknowledged that as a College we have come a long way in 20 years but still indeed have a long way to go. The weekend was a lovely celebration and I would like to thank all of those involved. We are all indeed truly blessed.

Next week our Year 11 students will attend a leadership camp at Emu Gully. The camp aims to build leadership and teamwork skills across the cohort. Following that experience, the process of nominating for elected leadership positions in 2014 will commence. It is scary to think that we are already in August and planning for next year is underway.

Middle School Expo – Monday 19 August A reminder to all current Middle School and Year 6 families

that the Middle School Expo will be held on Monday 19th August from 5.00 – 7.00pm. Classes for students in Years 7-9 will finish at 12.00 noon on that day so that students and staff can set up for the evening showcase of life in the Middle School. Students are free to go home for the afternoon or to remain at the College supervised and working to assist with the set up.

Senior School News This week the focus is on tips and information for parents published by Michael Grose from Parenting Ideas.

For those of you who have done a safari in Africa, you would be aware of the big 5 – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard, well read on for Michael’s Big 5 Parenting Skills: 1. Encouraging kids to be brave – the ‘king’ of parenting skills. Encouraged kids take sensible risks, misbehave less, make the most of opportunities and are less susceptible to peer pressure. Five ways to encourage your child – focus on improvement, highlight their efforts, comment on their contributions, focus on enjoyment in any activity and show your confidence.

2. Teaching kids to behave – it is the job of parents to make them social and safe. Teach them good manners, catch them doing the right thing, be a good role model, practice social behaviours at home and use consequences when they behave poorly.

3. Hooking kids into learning – a successful school journey starts at home so be interested in your child’s schooling, read with them, build self-confidence, create a home study space and routine.

4. Speaking so kids will listen – communication is one of the key skills a parent can have. Consider shoulder to shoulder parenting (take out the eye contact), ask good questions (what was good about school today), talk on their turf (their bedroom or in the car), put processes in place to encourage communication (eg family mealtimes or meetings), listen up don’t parent down (listen

Special mention must go to Luke Silveira who received a (High Distinction) for his Engineering Materials Unit as part of his Griffith University Early Start to Tertiary Study Program in Semester 1. Also, Chloe Ivak was recognised with a Gold SALC (Service Awareness & Learning in Community) Award for 157 hours of Community Service this year.

Many parents have queried if we still produce an assessment calendar. These can be downloaded from the front page of Moodle for each year level. All students should have these downloaded but, can I strongly urge parents to do the same and place it on the fridge or your child’s bedroom door so everyone knows what is coming up in terms of assessment, exams and excursions. Middle School News Communicating With Your Teenager If the day of your son or daughter was ‘orright’ but that they did ‘nuthin’ then, rest assured, things appear to be moving along a well-trodden adolescent path. However, it is our job as parents to investigate these vague terms and, whenever possible, eke out some further information.

Here are some options to expand upon these rather limited descriptions of a day at the College: •

Students are expected to note in the diary ‘Three Good Things’ from the week. It is worth reflecting with your son or daughter upon these things and how they impacted upon their week.

Students should have written a series of term goals in the diary. Often they will write these goals with little idea of what should be done on a daily basis to ensure they are moving inexorably toward achieving these goals. Perhaps you could assist them in breaking these larger goals into smaller achievable objectives.

Given that the first two of these ‘prompters’ involves the diary then a shared review of how the diary has been used so far this semester would be valuable.

Students will sometimes tread that nether-world of saying that they don’t need to record homework or that they are using their regular day books to record homework notes. From my experience students who are prompted to establish and maintain a pattern of study organisation invariably benefit from this discipline in the coming years.

I hope that you engage in regular conversation with your son or daughter about their learning at the College. Whilst they may not proclaim it out loud I can assure you that they always seek our affirmation, desire our involvement and rejoice in our pride.

Middle School Expo On Monday 19 August we will be hosting our annual Middle School Expo. This is an important event in the life of the College and, in particular, in examining the possibilities for study pathways through the Middle School. It is expected that all students attend this evening and I look forward to meeting many families throughout the evening.

Student Development With Humility and Resisting Complacency The last couple weeks has been interspersed with discussions between students and parents on the reports of Semester One. I am buoyed with optimism as I see so many students demonstrating a renewed vigor toward their work.

Each student demonstrating to me different approaches to how they will improve upon some of the disappointments of last semester. The positive attitudes are essential, ie.

‘Your attitude determines your altitude’ and within a key teaching framework ‘Attitude and Approach to learning’ is the first and critical Dimension of Learning (McRel). This is worth encouraging, but must also be paired with behavioral change, a commitment to act or do a thing which will embed change in how work gets done.

Beyond the attitude improvements, new behaviours need to be practiced to create habits which will ensure different outcomes from study this semester. Some habits of intelligent learners include these traits that many Senior School students are currently reflecting: Persisting – daily work and study is being recorded in the diary each lesson ensuring homework is noted and revision and extension can occur. Managing impulsivity – realizing that sitting with certain friends was a distraction, some students are committing to sit toward the front and help manage their own distractability. Seeking accuracy – some students are reflecting to me that ‘close enough was not actually good enough’ last semester, so the commitment is to draft early and work on feedback given by teachers to craft more accurate writing and cover the criteria. Remaining open – with humility and resisting complacency that the past determines the future, students are showing that they can grow, they can improve and they desire this.

These might sound simple, but when embedded in behaviours which are nurtured, negotiated and enforced by parents, young learners can be serious about turning good intentions into habits which render improvements, growth and patterns for future successes in life.

Science News Science continues to flourish here at St Andrews. As I walk around the Science Department I observe classes enthusiastically engaged in practical and written tasks. Now in the second year of delivering The Australian Curriculum to students in Years 7 - 10, we are making science literacy a focus and endeavouring to further develop in students their operational knowledge of scientific vocabulary and appropriate use of the correct genres to communicate scientifically.

The Junior School Science Extension group continues to be an exciting part of learning for some of the Year 5 and Year 6 students. In Semester 1, the group studied a unit called Switched On where the focus was on all things electrical.

This semester we have begun with some scientific and mathematical observations of the density of objects and how this applies to the real world.

Other groups of students from the Junior School have also been our guests this year. Year 1 have enjoyed learning about sound and light, while Year 6 have investigated physical and chemical changes in preparation for their task on bridge building.

National Science Week is coming up and once again some teachers and students from Years 6 to 12 will participate in the Griffith University Science Trivia Challenge. The Gold Coast City Council is hosting The Gold Coast Science Fair at Broadwater Parklands, Southport from 10:00am to 4:00pm, Saturday, 10 August 2013 - admission is free.

The Gold Coast Science Fair is an annual event now in its fourth year, created to help encourage engagement with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industries in a fun and interactive way.

An exciting program of exhibits, entertainment and demonstrations will showcase how science touches our everyday lives, and how it will help the city prepare for and stage the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

For students in Years 9 or 10, there is a wonderful opportunity available nearby at Griffith University during the next holidays from October 1 - 3. The three days will focus on Health and Engineering. Activities include bridge building, electronics, genetics, medicines and bodywork. Interactive tours of the state of the art medical and dental schools will be part of the program.

The Science Experience is definitely worth considering.

The program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of hands-on science activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work. “Excite Your Mind” at the Gold Coast Science Fair “It’s not as geeky as you think!” Sponsored and brought to you by City of Gold Coast, Study Gold Coast and National Science Week, this year’s Gold Coast Science Fair will EXCITE YOUR MIND! The event will be held on Saturday 10th August at Southport Broadwater Parklands from 10am to 4pm. The event will showcase education providers such as Bond University, Griffith University, Southern Cross University, Air Gold Coast, Academy of Design (just to name a few) as well as industry representatives such as City of Gold Coast, I Choose Technology and Tech Space to encourage involvement in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industry.

The event will officially be opened by Paul Burt, the fishing, boating and surf reporter for Channel 9 at 11:00am. So come along as there will be LOADS of prizes and giveaways to be won. It’s FREE ADMISSION so come along between 10am to 4pm on the day to grab a free show bag.

Career News On Wednesday evening this week, the annual Senior Studies Expo took place in the RBT at which Year 9 and Year 10 students and their parents were able to find out the senior subjects on offer in Year 10 and in Years 11 and 12. Representatives from Griffith, Southern Cross and Bond University, Gold Coast Institute of TAFE, The Australian Defence Forces, MEGT and Ignite were also in attendance to provide information about career options during the senior years and beyond Year 12.

For anyone unable to attend, the Course Information booklets and other publications issued at the event have been distributed to students via their learning advisors to take home for parents to read and discuss with their sons and daughters.

How should students make wise decisions about their senior subjects? All students in Year 10, 11 and 12 study English, Mathematics, Christian Studies and PE. In addition, students will study FOUR other elective subjects. However, for the selection process, students need to select six elective subjects in DESCENDING ORDER. The subject lines are then created based in student demand. As an overall guide, students should ask themselves the following questions to help them determine which subjects to opt for.

Do I ENJOY the subject? Does the subject INTEREST me?

How have I been PERFORMING in that subject area?

Do I NEED particular subjects to get on a chosen course or to reach my career goals?

Am I keeping my options open?

As many students do not at this stage know what they would like to do after school (and, let us stress, that is nothing to worry about!) these guiding questions help to ensure great outcomes at the end of Year 12. Students will perform better in subjects which interest them and that they genuinely enjoy!

The QTAC Tertiary Prerequisites for 2016 should be closely examined to check the prerequisite courses for university entrance. Of greatest significance to prospective Year 11 students, are the changes to the prerequisite subjects for education degree courses in 2016. On Page 8 in the Tertiary Prerequisites 2016 guide there is a Choosing Senior Subjects Guide-Activity Sheet which can be most helpful in the decision making process of subject selection.

Year 10 students and parents should also beware that Griffith University has provided each of our Year 10 students with the opportunity to participate in the MyCareerProfile career assessment tool. Each Year 10 student has been emailed the link at the Griffith University website plus the details about how to access the career self assessment tool.

Carrying out the MyCareerProfile can be most helpful and informative as students continue with their career planning in semester two of Year 10.

Some prospective Year 11 students may be considering including a traineeship, or a certificate course at the GCITAFE or some university study as part of their Year 11 and 12 curriculum. Please contact Mrs Wrigley for more information about these pathways.

Now that the online QTAC University applications are open, Year 12 students are beginning to seriously consider their university preferences. QTAC information sessions are offered for the Year 12 students on Thursday afternoons, but they and their parents are welcome to make an appointment with Mrs Wrigley to discuss their university plans.

Finally, a reminder that it is the GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY OPEN DAY this Sunday 11 August. It is great idea for senior students to check out university campuses and offerings before they go into Year 12.

Japanese News This week we welcomed our Japanese sister school, Higashino High School from Saitama near Tokyo. Fifteen students joined in a special program of scavenger hunts, Aussie games, dance, art, regular classes, cooking, English and other activities with our Japanese classes across the St Andrews sub-schools accompanied by Mr Matsuura and Ms Ohmori. St Andrews is privileged to enjoy a very rewarding and close relationship with Higashino HS whom we plan to visit again for the fourth time in 2014.

20th Anniversary Gala Concert Last Saturday some of our very talented past and present students, staff and parents joined together to present a Gala Concert to celebrate 20 years of this wonderful College.

This was a fantastic night of celebration and music. Special thanks to Ethan Jones, Mel Dorge, Sam Maguire, Riley McGovern, Tahlia Mazzaroli, Samantha Naday, Ben Gehrke, Josh McRae, William Chang, Sally McConville, Sophie ManStudent Achievement ion, Jasper and Cazmir Leschke for coming back to share their talents and to our very talented present students who Ebony Shield - Year 10 also shared the stage.

Ebony recently competed in the 2013 State Interschool Equestrian Championships held in Maryborough. Ebony competed against 35 competitors at her level. The other competitors were aged 14 -18 years as her event had students from Year 10 through to year 12. Ebony finished 11th out of 35 in the state for Novice dressage. Ebony is now busy training hard to qualify for next year’s state championships. Congratulations Ebony!

Tia Faulkner and Lachlan Irvine - Year 12 and Year 10 Lachlan and Tia represented the South Coast team and St Andrews at the State Cross Country Championships in Bundaberg. Well done Tia and Lachlan.

Most teachers would probably agree that a good breakfast helps with concentration in the classroom. Nutritionists consider breakfast the most important meal of the day.

Yet many school children are still going without it for one reason or another. Bad idea!

Breakfast, as the word suggests, literally means ‘breaking the fast’. After going 10–12 hours overnight without food, children’s energy reserves are low and their bodies, and perhaps more importantly their brains, need fuel.

Counselling Update Visioning for a Positive Future Last Wednesday afternoon a group of Year 8 and 9 girls from the Girls With a Purpose Program in Term 1 reunited for a visioning session.

What’s more, research shows that people who regularly eat breakfast tend to have better diets overall and are more likely to be able to maintain a healthy weight than those who skip their first meal of the day.

Like any other meal, a balanced breakfast should include a mixture of foods from the different food groups. Breakfast cereal with milk provides many important nutrients such as calcium, iron, dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Breakfast is generally based on breakfast cereals, fruit and bread. The average breakfast can supply up to a quarter of your daily fibre intake but a much lower proportion of fat intake.

Children especially benefit when breakfast is eaten – a healthy breakfast can provide children with nearly half of their daily needs of many essential vitamins and minerals.

Below is a recent survey of 1,000 Australian primary and secondary school teachers:

The girls created their vision boards by selecting words, quotes and pictures and pasting them onto a canvas.

The floor was scattered with magazines and printouts from quote websites, along with inspiring pictures of people and places. The aim of visioning is to create positive images of what you want in your future and to place it somewhere to remind you of your goals and aspirations. It was also a time for the girls to share their stories and their dreams for the future.

I hope to provide the opportunity for more positive visioning sessions for different year levels throughout the remainder of 2013.

The findings revealed: • 96 percent of teachers say students who eat breakfast pay more attention.

• 88 percent of teachers say that students who eat breakfast perform better at school.

• 79 percent of teachers say that students who eat breakfast are more interested in learning than those who don’t.

• When asked to nominate their choice of the best breakfast options for students, teachers nominated breakfast cereals as the most popular option.

Born to knit campaign 2013 Last year, Save the Children received 4,844 blankets for children in need programs across Australia and overseas. 37 of these blankets were made with love by our St Andrews community.

It is time to start knitting again. Thank you to our knitters who continued through the summer; this has provided a head start on the blanket tally for this year.

Please enlist your friends, family and neighbours to knit or crochet blankets. Blankets will keep children warm and help to save lives. Save the Children request the size to be 80cm square. College Fees – Optional Instalment Arrangements Tuition Fees become due at the beginning of each Term. However, we do understand that this may at times present cashflow problems for parents.

St Andrews P & F News My apologies, it seems I am already thinking about the end of the school year. The General meeting for this term will be held on Wednesday August 14 at 7pm in the CRC. The AGM is scheduled for Term 4.

Term 3 Meeting – Wednesday 14 August Please come along to our general meeting and find out what the P & F is all about and the projects we are hoping to fund over the upcoming year. If you have any agenda items for discussion please email the Secretary at pandf@ salc.qld.edu.au the Friday before the meeting. It is a great opportunity to have input into school projects which the P & F fund. Everyone is welcome so please join us for drinks and nibbles and to meet other parents.

There is a major topic for discussion on this terms agenda which affects all families at St Andrews, so we welcome your feedback. The meetings are only for an hour and Mr Kotzur attends and updates the P & F on all the achievements and upcoming events within the whole school.

Vacant positions on P & F There are a number of integral roles on the subcommittee still vacant, including fund raising and grants officer. If anyone is interested both these roles are very rewarding and assist in raising funds for improvements around the school.

Funding The P & F has recently funded seating on the Village Green and water coolers for both the Junior & Middle Schools.

During the September holidays the extension to the Bus Shelter will be built which the P & F is seeking approval for additional funding at this meeting. We are looking to fund a major project over the next few years and any suggestions are welcome.

One of the suggestions has been to fund grand stand seating on the back oval and the College is currently seeking quotes. Approval for the expenditure will be sought at future P & F meetings. The College would like to have this completed in 2014.

What is it about Middle Schooling that makes it so important for our children? This session will focus upon the philosophy and structure of Middle Schooling at St Andrews and provide information regarding our pastoral models and curricular development including possibilities for subject selection.
