Junior School News Welcome Back What a great first couple of weeks back at school. There has been a real positive feeling and emotion around the College as the students settle into their new classes. Welcome to our newest students “The Preppies”. The Year 1 students all so much more grown up in their formal uniform. A warm welcome to our new students who have joined us from all corners of the country and welcome back to all returning students. The P & F welcomed our new Prep parents with a tea and tissue pack. Everything is better after a cup of tea. There was also a lovely welcome reception under the Multi Purpose Hall when all Prep families arrived last Thursday. Thank you to all involved. There is a real sense of optimism in the community and I am excited about the possibilities that lay ahead.
Car Park Thank you for your patience at the beginning of the school year. We have families who are still learning the new systems and there are many very tired children who are not thinking about the traffic. It’s important to note the key times for pick up in the College. Students who are in Prep - Year 4, the optimal time is 3:15 pm. A large amount of traffic has gone by then. Students in Year 5 - Year 6 who get picked up outside the Worship Centre, your optimal time is 3:00 – 3:10pm before the Middle School and Senior School students exit. If you have children who are in Prep - Year 4 and have older siblings, please arrange to meet all of them in the kiss and ride section of the Junior School.
While we have more staff out on duty this year, we are still looking for eager Traffic Safety Attendant Volunteers to help get the students into cars. Please contact Jo Levey at joannel@salc.qld.edu.au if you are able to assist. It’s a good way to get your steps up in the day. Swimming Success Congratulations to Milla Jansen who recently represented Queensland at the National School Age Swimming titles in Adelaide. She won the following medals. • Bronze Medal - 50m Backstroke • Silver Medal - 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay • Silver Medal - 4 x 50m Medley Relay • Silver Medal - 8 x 50m All Age Relay • Qualified for finals in all Individual Events We are so proud of you Milla. Your natural talent, coupled with your hard work is a credit to you.
In Brief – Celebrating the Good Stuff • We held our commencement service in the Multi Purpose Hall as a whole school event. The Year 6 students received their leadership badges and the captains received their badges. A great way to dedicate the year. • The Prep - Year 2 Information Night was held last night. Thank you to families for your attendance. • There has been some major works in the plaza area outside the library. The pavers have been removed and it has been resurfaced. It looks great! Chaplains Chat Another school year begins! And as per usual the staff of St Andrews were blessed to begin the new year at retreat, where we gathered around a unifying theme to set the tone for all that is ahead. This year our focus for retreat and preparation was “Growing and Shaping our Future”. Our keynote speaker encouraged us to consider the role that Christian Spirituality contributes to our well-being and how this helps shape our lives for service. A focus for a staff worship time during our preparation days back at school was “What is God looking to grow in SALC in 2018?” A quick survey of a cross-section of staff in our College revealed all sorts of important factors that people feel God can assist with and lead during our 25th year of operating as a Lutheran College. Concepts such as connection and reflection were two. Indicating the truth that our loving God is always facilitating connection between people. His love for us leads us to desire genuine relationships with others. Reflection is a powerful aspect of faith as we look back in thankfulness on what God has provided in the past and we at St Andrews certainly have much to be thankful for in this regard. Other suggestions that God would like to see grow in our community included communication and consideration. And once again God is certainly involved in bringing about increases in both of these as we share our lives with Him.
Andrews being such a wonderful place to belong. God is always endeavouring to speak His life giving Word amongst us. As we move through 2018, celebrating our 25th year may all of us - staff, parents and students alike - be open to God’s Spirit working amongst us, growing St Andrews as a place that truly Celebrates the Gospel, Nurtures the Individual and Empowers Life-long Learning. Japanese News We have started 2018 with Kakizome ( the first calligraphy writing of the year). Students selected words in Japanese that corresponded with their personal goal for Japanese this year. We look forward to great things in Junior School Japanese this year.
God is always in the business of growing love within individuals and communities and this was put forward with a beautiful addendum by one of our staff. It being, that God is keen to grow our ability to have greater insight into who the people truly are that we interact with daily. The idea being that God desires us to see below the surface of who people are and have greater empathy for where they are in their journey. In practical terms, this is seen when we look beyond the inappropriate actions of a student and offer genuine care for them rather than condemnation because we understand that they are much more than just their outward behaviour.
It is openness to God developing these types of attitudes and approaches within our community that contribute to St

Candice has performed with the Queensland Wind Orchestra, Queensland Conservatorium Saxophone Orchestra and “Stitched” Saxophone Quartet.
PAT (Performing Arts Tuition) 2018 This week saw our PAT programs launch for 2018 across the College with over 600 enrolments from Prep through to Year 12 in Dance, Instrumental Music, Voice and Speech and Drama. A reminder that all enrolments and cancellations for PAT lessons are via the online form on the website. New members are welcome in our bands and choirs. Dance troupes are audition based.

Debbie Nineham (Piano) Debbie has a Bachelor of Arts (Extended Music) from UQ as well as Cert I and II in Music Industry. She has been running her own private studio for the past 6 years in Brisbane and has also worked as a Music Tutor at Corinda SHS and Good News Lutheran School. Debbie has experience working with students across a variety of levels and has prepared students for exams.

Candice Showers (clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone) Candice is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium where she completed a Bachelor of Music. She also has a Graduate Diploma of Education (Classroom and Instrumental). Candice has worked as a tutor at Kings Christian College, Hillcrest Christian College, Downtown Creative Music

ELC News ELC has had a wonderful start to the year. Thank you to Junior School families for being respectful and not parking in the ELC parking area. This helps parents to get to work on time. P&F News
Sport News AUSKICK This program will begin on the Top Oval in Week 4, and Auskick staff will be happy to collect students who need to be accompanied on the walk to the top oval from the bus shelter at 3:00pm for each session. Please let Auskick staff know when you register if your child would like to be walked to the top and/or they need to go to OSHC after Auskick. Introductory activities will be conducted for Prep - Year 4 students in PSPE in Week 3. On Tuesday 6 February we will be having some Gold Coast Suns players visit St Andrews which will include an opportunity for Prep - Year 6 students to hear from these players during first break in the Multi Purpose Hall and maybe get an autograph.
Thanks to all Year 7 parents who joined us for afternoon tea on the Student Orientation Day. Thanks also to current and 2017 Prep parents for joining together for our morning tea, dubbed “Tea & Tissues”, last Thursday. It was lovely meeting you all, and we hope all of your children have settled in well and are enjoying this next exciting chapter! A huge thank you to Prep parent, Liz Clarke from Reid Street Kitchen for donating delicious lamingtons. You can catch Liz and her team and taste their amazing desserts at Miami Marketta plus other markets around the Gold Coast and Brisbane. This year the P & F meetings have moved to Tuesday nights in the Lighthouse Boardroom in J Block. There is one meeting per term and all parents and guardians are invited (and encouraged!) to attend. If you have an idea that will benefit our students, this is your chance to be heard. Please mark the dates in your diary: Term 1 - Tuesday 13 March at 7:00pm Term 2 - Tuesday 12 June at 7:00pm Term 3 - Tuesday 11 September at 7:00pm Term 4 - Tuesday 6 November at 7:00pm Our major event for Term 1, Picnic in the Park, is fast approaching. Please join us in Week 4 on FRIDAY 16 FEBRUARY at 5.30pm on the Junior School Lower Oval. All families are invited to attend. You can BYO alcohol but please no glassware, plastic only. There will be a sausage sizzle, entertainment from St Andrews students, jumping castle and lots more!! We would also love you to save the date for our major event in Term 2 - we will be holding our own Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on TUESDAY 15 MAY at 10.30am - 12pm in aid of the Cancer Council to raise money so they can continue their vital work into cancer research, prevention and support services. More details to come but this is going to be a great event with lots of fun to be had and yummy food to be eaten.
ST ANDREWS SWIMMING Years 4 – 6 will have swimming practice on Friday afternoons in Weeks 2, 3 and 4 with our Carnival being held at Somerset College Pool on Friday 23 February. Please visit the Parent Lounge and ‘Accept’ for these important events. More detailed information will be emailed home.
CHEERLEADING Congratulations to Madison Tydd, Livinia Budd, Tilly Radley, Indi Dore and Ashleigh Crawford who came 4th at the Australian Cheerleading Championships late in 2017. FUTSAL Junior School teams will be entered in to competitions closer to home and potentially in Commonwealth Games standard venues later in the year rather than early in 2018. All students will still have all of the same participation and representation opportunities that they have had in the past, but be able to compete at high standard Competitions which suit our College needs and expectations to a greater degree. HINTERLAND DISTRICT SPORT TRIALS All of the dates are listed on the following page and will be on the College Website and various notice boards around the College. Reminders will be in student notices and various College news sites as trial dates approach, but it is every students’ OWN responsibility to research the dates and contact Mr Manion if they are interested in attending these events.
