Football Congratulations to our Year 5 boys football team who recently won the SE Queensland soccer tournament. It was a great result and we are very proud of them.

Mufti Day Thank you to all who contributed to the Mufti Day. The total raised for Term 3 Mufti Day is $1,163.85 for the Kokoda Youth Foundation a foundation that works with young people from troubled backgrounds.

We also had a number of students who took self-initiated action and raised funds and awareness of charities that were important to them. Students have raised funds for the RSPCA, Great Barrier Reef Conservation, TLC for Kids to help children and their families and to purchase Super Max healing turtle nightlights for kids on the Gold Coast undergoing treatment for cancer. It is great to see the action that is taking place for the good of others and a true indication of the nature of our community. Thank you to all who supported these causes.

Student Led Conferences The Student Led conferences are an opportunity for the students to reflect on their work and share their learning with you their parents. Just a reminder that the student led conferences will be held on 25 August, followed by the Gold Coast Show holiday on Friday 26 August. On Thursday 25 August, students will NOT attend school except for their scheduled conference. Students are required to wear their formal uniform to the conference. Please ensure that your child is supervised at all times. Please be advised that all playgrounds are out of bounds for all students who are NOT booked into OSHC. OSHC will operate all day care on 25 August and you are encouraged to book early to use this service. In order to access the OSHC service you are required to contact standrews.oshc@qlecs.org.au or telephone 5522 5762 to enrol your child.

Eisteddfod Season We are starting to get some early results in from the Eisteddfods and they have been very positive. Once again the students from St Andrews are performing to a very high level and these results are due to a lot of hard work. Please see the Arts section of the bulletin for specific results.

Sports Shoes There appears to be some mixed messages around the sports shoes in the Junior School. There has been no change to the policy for Junior School students. Students are asked to wear predominately white sports shoes with white laces.

If you have recently purchased other sports shoes which are outside of this policy, please make contact with Mr Schumacher at darrins@salc.qld.edu.au to discuss possible options. Thank you for your support of this policy.

Renovations Update We have begun work on the final project in the Junior School renovation program for this year. This will include a Music Centre (Music Room, Music Media Lab, Performing Arts Tuition Rooms and Instrument Storerooms), Japanese Room and Staff Room. These works will be completed by the end of Term 3. The Years 5 and 6 students have settled in well to their new rooms and they are starting to personalize them.

Once again thank you for your patience as we undertake our plan to build learning environments that reflect the best of what we know and how students learn.

NAPLAN If you have a child in Year 3 or 5 you would have recently received your child’s NAPLAN report. As with all assessment it is an opportunity to analyse what is working well and look for areas of improvement. This test provides a snapshot of your child’s performance on this day, in this setting. If you would like a full and comprehensive idea about how your child is performing, please talk to your child’s teacher.

Japanese Speech Contest Thank you and congratulations to the students who participated in the Speech contest over the weekend. All students who entered either received a highly commended or placed in the top three students. This is a real credit to the students who participated and their teachers Sensai Taki and Sensai Charlton. The students recited their speeches to me and while I couldn’t understand anything that they had said, I could see that there had been a great amount of effort and practice that has gone into their speeches.

P-2 and Years 3-6 Discos Thank you to everyone involved in the P-2 and Years 3-6 Discos held on 5 and 12 August. They were both a hugh success! We made approximately $2,500 from both Discos, the proceeds going to the GO Team to donate to a charity.

ELC News The ELC has been a hive of activity the last two weeks really focusing on positive relationships and using words to communicate feelings. We have been focusing on using emotions in positive ways and talking about how these emotions affect our friends. We have some new books about relationships and friendships that have been read a number of times.

Book Fair is on this week and the beginning of next week.

Chaplains Chat

Jesus stood up and commanded the wind, “Be quiet!” and he said to the waves, “Be still!” The wind died down, and there was a great calm. – Mark 4:39 (GNT) What’s the earliest memory you have of being scared? What was it that scared you? Does it seem scary now?

It doesn’t take long in life before we are scared of something.

It might be that we are scared of the dark, scared of spiders or scared of small spaces. As parents, we try to shield our kids from things that are scary, but, despite our best efforts, kids still find plenty of things to be scared about.

Recently, I have been working with Miss Jess from the Early Learning Centre, who identified some students in her class that were scared. She wanted to address this issue from a Christian point-of-view and even provide her students with simple tools to help when they are scared. As a result, Miss Jess and I have been teaching her students about the time Jesus’ disciples were caught on a boat in a storm and Jesus put an end to the storm with his words.

In the account given in Mark’s Gospel (Mark 4:35-40), the disciples of Jesus were so afraid they feared for their lives, but Jesus was the complete opposite. He was not afraid, even for a minute. As you read the story an important question to consider is: Why was Jesus not afraid? Was it because he could not die? We know now that this was not true.

Jesus could have died in the storm. The reason for Jesus’ confidence, as far as I can tell, is that Jesus knew something his disciples didn’t know. He knew that his heavenly father, and ours, holds all things in his hands, including the wind and the waves. God could intervene with a moment’s notice and bring peace and calmness to the situation.

In the same way, God is able to bring peace and calmness to our lives when we are anxious, worried or scared. Whether we are young or old, we can pray to God, who holds all things in his hands, and see what he can do about our situation. Sometimes, as a result of our prayer, the situation changes in the way we ask or need. Sometimes, it doesn’t.

However, in all cases and for all needs I am convinced that when we pray to God in earnest need and in faith that God performs another miracle – he stills the storm within us. The thoughts that worried us no longer concern us. Our perspective is changed. Our eyes are opened. Like Jesus, we become entirely unafraid and no longer scared.

Time for your child to shine!

Next Thursday 25 August is the exciting day to celebrate your child’s successful learning so far this year. Please refer to the communication sent via Parent Lounge and make sure you have booked your preferred timeslot.

Remember your child only comes to school for the time allocated for their Student Led Conference, but can wait in the new STEAM Room (the old B Undercroft area) if you need to attend the Conferences for your other Junior School siblings. Students are required to wear their formal uniform, except for Prep students who will wear their usual coloured shirts and shorts.

These included origami (paper folding), kamishibai (traditional storytelling), kamifusen (paper balloon throwing), fuku warai (Lucky Laugh) and shodou (calligraphy). Thank you Higashino High School for a great afternoon!

Please let you child take the lead as far as possible so they can tell you proudly what they have been learning about.

Be prepared to “prompt” our youngest students if required, but make this a wonderful opportunity to affirm them with encouraging words.

Some useful prompts might be: “Tell me more about your …... What you have done sounds so interesting.”

“You have put a lot of effort into your …… What was the best part of that for you?”

“I feel very proud of you for showing how …… caring/ courageous/balanced ..…. you were.”

Performing Arts News Dance Troupes at Eisteddfod Last week our Dance Troupes across the College as well as Animi competed in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod at the Arts Centre Gold Coast. Congratulations to all involved - both students and our creative choreographers for representing the College so well. Special mention must also go to Year 12 student Lucy Hourn who choreographed two routines this year and of course to our wonderful Miss Paula Guild who coordinated the troupes. Cultural Awards Wednesday 19 October 6.30pm, MPH Cultural Awards is a major event in the Arts Calendar, where we showcase and celebrate the year we have had in the Arts as well as recognise the individual success of our students across the Performing and Visual Arts.

Eligibility for Awards Below is the Criteria for Cultural Awards from Years 4-12.

How is Information Gathered?

In the Junior School, we use our ensemble rolls to determine eligibility for an award. If your child is involved in activities that are not based at the College, this information must be emailed to priscillas@salc.qld.edu before the end of Term 3 to be considered.

In the Middle/Senior School, students are invited to complete an Arts Survey and give to Miss Scott before the end of Week 9 to be considered for an award. This form can be found on Student Cafe, Parent Lounge, or by emailing Miss Scott directly at priscillas@salc.qld.edu Cilla Scott Head of Arts

OSHC News Issue 1

P & F News

You will be hearing from us regularly throughout the year so we can keep you posted as to what the children have been up to here at OSHC. The biggest compliment/complaint we get from our families each afternoon is that their children never want to go home. As trying as this can be for the families, for us it means that we have been successful in providing a stimulating, fun and engaging program for your children, which is fabulous news for the OSHC team!

Each day an Environmental Leader is chosen to take care of such things as: watering the plants, placing the scraps into the compost bin, giving out soap to each child prior to eating time, cleaning up the eating area and turning off all lights before we move off to play outside. It would be remiss of me to mention that their favourite part of this job is being able to choose their afternoon tea before all of the other children! We think this is a fair trade off and most of all it seems, so do the children!!!

Trivia Night SOLD OUT! Thank you for your support. See you at the MPH this Saturday. Remember doors open at 6pm. BYO drinks, alcohol & food. Be sure to bring your gold coins for games & raffles you have to be in it to win it and you won’t want to miss out on the amazing prizes we have up for grabs.

Father’s Day is fast approaching. As has been the practice in the past, the P & F will be running a Father’s Day Stall. The stall will be located in the Bus Shelter. The P & F are looking for volunteers to help run the stall on the mornings of Wednesday 31st August, Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September. Here is just a small snippet of what the children have been getting up to since Term 3 began.

Recently we planted our very own OSHC veggie garden which is tended to by the Environmental Leader daily, many and varied games in the MPH (Watchy Watchy, Dodgeball, Brandy ball, Line tag, China wall, Golden child – just to name a few), OSHC has talent, visit from the Elanora Police Beat, learn to draw animals, our daily Bible affirmations/prayer during group time, running races and discussions regarding fairness and what traits/qualities are required to become an OSHC Leader. There are so many other things that we do but it is difficult to fit it all into this space.

The children are getting great pleasure from playing in the new sensory playground. They have named this the Willy Wonka Playground, which is quite suiting, don’t you think?

Well I hope you enjoyed our first issue! I look forward to communicating with you more throughout the remainder of the year.

It has been decided to run a community event in Term 4 on Friday 28 October on the Village Green. There will be numerous food stalls activities for the children and entertainment from students of the College. This community event will focus on the redevelopment of J block.

We are looking for a Symbolic Idea for the rebuild of J Block. Something that the school community can contribute to in a lasting tribute in this special time of the College’s redevelopment. Amy participates in Choir, Band and Animi Dance, and assists Mr Burdett with Art Classes for the Juniors.

I work just up the road as a Business Manager, and I am currently studying an MBA (nearly finished!!).

I joined the P & F as Treasurer because I believe in contributing to the College community and have limited capacity to do so during business working hours.

My hobbies are live music, gym and choir.
