Local Organization Shows Love Beyond Their Niche

Many Rochester residents can attest to the fact that our city is lacking permanent, affordable housing. Extensive home searches and competitive biddings on rental and for sale dwellings have been on the upswing since 2020. Finding a residence to call home can be especially challenging for those with limited income, mental illness, or recovering from addiction, trafficking or abuse. The Salvation Army is taking the housing hardship head on with a plan to transform a portion of our Liberty Pole Way property into affordable, supportive and permanent housing units. The site is located right in the heart of downtown and lies within proximity of the top five zip codes with the highest number of people living below poverty level. Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is a combination of affordable residency and supportive services designed for health, recovery, and personal growth. “The challenges of poverty, and the lack of resources to overcome it, directly impact the quality of life for a significant number of people in our area.” said Major Deborah Burr, Director of The Salvation Army Monroe County Operations. “Our goal is to develop and operate seven supportive units for persons with these special conditions or other life challenges. Services and referrals will be individualized to help manage health and behavioral conditions."

According to a survey of service providers in the Greater Rochester area taken in May 2021, the ‘largest unmet need in our homeless system at this time’ is Permanent Supportive Housing (59%). Also noted were the primary barriers to accessing housing: Affordability (77.78%) and Availability (68.33%). Fidelis Care, who provides affordable healthcare to more than two million people locally and statewide, commenced this project’s fundraising initiative with a $10,000 donation. Their financial contribution is a testament to their mission; serving communities through partnerships with local providers, schools, and organizations. “PSH is a proven approach to the problem of homelessness. The extra layer of support from an on-site case manager and resident support coach offers a greater opportunity to diffuse difficulties in getting necessary services and maintaining tenancy.” added Major Burr. “This individualized approach will help to create a foundation for being stable and independent.” If you would like to support The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester’s Permanent Supportive Housing campaign, please visit www.salarmy.us/rocrailton to make a dedicated, tax-deductible donation.

Rochester Cycle Group Hosts Ride To End Hunger The Salvation Army is blessed with many helpers in the community who raise funds, food and other essentials. This summer we had a new group join “the Army’s army” with our first motorcycle club: Life On Two Wheels . This Rochester based group held a start-ofsummer motorcycle ride to benefit our food pantries and shelter guests. Group representative, JJ Johnson, lead the campaign with flyer distribution and event planning. In coordination with our Development team, the ride started at our North West location, 100 West Avenue. Riders were asked to bring canned goods and other nonperishable items in lieu of a ride fee.

Annual Day Of Caring Provides Uplifting Touches to EFS Thanks to the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes, The Salvation Army was among the near 200 local not-for-profit organizations who received help with beautification projects on June 19th. This annual Day of Caring stretched 5000 volunteers across the region for the community’s single largest volunteer effort. Day of Caring projects typically include painting, raking, cleaning up parks, planting community gardens, and getting outdoor play areas and summer camps ready for the warm weather.

Our Liberty Pole Way location received uplifting touches both inside and out with colorful landscaping and brightly painted wall decor. Our Emergency Family Services waiting room also added a donated fish tank that included three adorable gold barbs. The fish now greet our guests and watch over a shelving unit offering free books and small activities.

Delivering Goodness on National Donut Day Cont. (from page 1)...dozens of donuts and words of thanks to human service organizations around Rochester. The tradition of gifting donuts dates back to World War I, when nearly 250 Salvation Army volunteers traveled overseas to provide emotional support, fried confectionery, clothing and supplies to American troops. For more than a century, we have continued to offer food, hydration, supplies and comfort to first responders and frontline workers.

Mobile Integrated Healthcare, WNY Dental, and People Inc. These organizations, along with more than a dozen others, were nominated by local community members.

More than 25 motorcycles lined our parking lot as event day participants carried in bags of donations. Close to $300 worth of items were provided before the motorcyclists kicked up their stands to ride. We’re so grateful to have partnered with The Life On Two Wheels group and welcome other organizations to plan a similar event with us. To organize a collection/drive as a group or individual, reach out to our Community Relations Coordinator at ras.volunteer@use.salvationarmy.org

Our 27th Annual Golf Tournament FORE Kids returned on July 11th, 2022. More than 125 participants joined us for this extensive fundraiser; golfers, volunteers, staff and guests enjoyed a day on the course of Irondequoit Country Club. New to the event this year was a golf ball rocket launcher and a balloon mystery raffle with collective prizes worth $2,000. As we continue to accept donations for this event, we expect to meet our goal of $70,000. Funds raised help support children and families in need with after school programs, summer camps, and essential items to help kids succeed.

These lovely changes were made possible by volunteers who registered to support The Salvation Army through the United Way’s Portal: Volunteer United. Our visiting friends from Brown and Brown and CDS Monarch spent the morning of June 19th digging, watering, cleaning and moving donated items to give our space a livelier vibe. The United Way partnership is one we truly appreciate as we strive to do the most good for Monroe County neighbors in need. When you give to the United Way Campaign, you can specifically choose The Salvation Army as your donation’s destination.

Golfing FORE Kids Is Back!

This year, The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester partnered with Donuts Delite to celebrate this day of goodness.

We’re honored to continue the tradition that was started more than 100 years ago. Sweet treats and smiles were served in appreciation of those who selflessly serve others.

Together more than 100 donuts were prepared and delivered to five essential organizations in Rochester; Rochester Regional Homecare, Society for the Protection and Care of Children, CHS
