t’s difficult to please the British when it comes to the weather. We fret when it’s cold and wet, but as soon as the temperature is over 20oC we complain it’s too hot and the weather forecaster warns of uncomfortable humid nights, making sleep difficult. But just to confuse matters we wake, presumably delirious from lack of sleep, and happily spend the cost of a secondhand car on a week abroad, in temperatures exceeding 30oC. Meanwhile, things are hotting up at Southsea Lifestyle, we are launching our very own pop-up radio station on 11th August from 6pm, see page 21. BREXIT: CORNUCOPIA OR ASHES FOR THE HOUSING MARKET? Neil Maxwell

I

‘ve been asked this repeatedly since the referendum (not in the exact terms above) and my message has been: “Keep calm and carry on!” None of us know what is around the corner, but there is no mass panic and demand is steady. Property sales did go quieter in May and June, which is not surprising, given the different political messages being publicised, but July has been a fairly steady trading period.

There are more first time buyers around than there has been seen for a while. Both the promise by the Governor of the Bank of England to ensure that there is plenty of liquidity in the markets for mortgage borrowing, and a plea to the banks to relax the stranglehold regulations that have excluded many from getting mortgages, should have the effect of bringing more houses to the market, giving those sitting on the fence the confidence to get off and into the market place.

Only last week I was told about a new mortgage product with a ten year fixed rate of 2.99%, so perhaps a change is occurring.

With instruction levels remaining at a historic low, it does limit people’s choice, but it also creates competition for the properties that are available.

However, if you are concerned about prices, the surveyors will always be there to comment on the figures being paid, adding a safeguard to the house buying process.

On the morning after the referendum, I, like many people, was surprised by the result. There was also the simplistic suggestion that the leave voters were just xenophobes, but this would be to insult a large proportion of the population. As ever, these matters are far more nuanced and at midnight, after being called out to the lifeboat that I volunteer on, I came across a large beach party underway at Eastney.

The partygoers were Eastern Europeans celebrating the Brexit vote as they thought this meant no one else would be let in from Europe, as they feared too many people were here already. After asking if they’d seen a missing person, I left a tad bemused by their logic and the contrast of the morning’s sentiment.

The reality is, unless you’re cashing out of the housing market by either downsizing or leaving home ownership behind, the next property you buy will have been similarly affected by any correction in pricing. As I write today, I can’t see any signs of the market grinding to a halt. I'm leaving the last paragraph to John F Kennedy.

“So let us begin anew - remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear. But never let us fear to negotiate”.

OH TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE

e all like to be beside the sea; the smell of salt spray, the gentle lapping of the waves on the shore, the soft sand between our toes at low tide… But take a dip beneath the surface of the UK’s seas and there’s so much more to see than first meets the eye. Seals weave in and out of sunlit kelp forests, cuttlefish flash all the colours of the rainbow, starfish graze along the muddy seabed and sharks zip through the open waters.

Many people consider the sea simply as a huge expanse of water – vast, deep and maybe a little scary. But a huge variety of habitats can be found here. Many people are unaware of the wonderful, nationally scarce, seagrass meadows which we are fortunate to have on our doorstep.

In the shallows in and around the Solent, seahorses and bass hide among underwater seagrass meadows. As well as providing a great nursery habitat for young fish, it’s also the only true flowering plant in the sea and it also absorbs harmful nutrients.

There’s so much variety in our marine habitats beyond seagrass beds - close to shore, rocky reefs create rockpools that teem with anemones and starfish, while further out to sea, deep-water corals provide other nursery sites for many of our commercial

seafood, such as cod and crab.

We can get a glimpse of life beneath the waves on Southsea beach - here are some things you can do with your family on a seashore safari:

EXPLORING THE STRANDLINE As you walk along Southsea beach, can you spot a line of seaweed washed up on the shore? That’s the strandline, which is a great place to look for interesting things that have been brought onto the beach by the tide. The egg cases of sharks and rays, nicknamed ‘mermaid’s purses’, are often found on our local beaches, as are whelk egg cases and cuttlebones.

BEACH ART Decide on something to make, this could be a sea creature such as a crab or seahorse or an underwater scene. Then start collecting beach material such as washed up seaweed, driftwood and different coloured pebbles. It might be useful to mark off an area for the beach art with rope. Don’t forget to take a picture before the tide washes it away.

ROCKPOOLING If you go a little further afield this summer, why not explore the rockpools on the lower shore as the tide goes out? It is best to use your hands to collect creatures as nets can cause damage.

Make a simple ‘aquascope’ to look underwater using an old plastic tub and plastic wrap. Always go rockpooling on a falling tide - 1-2 hours before low tide is best – and don’t forget to return any creatures back to the water!

FROM WIMBLEDON TO THE BOARDROOM

I

f you watched Andy Murray win Wimbledon on TV this year, you may have noticed his coach Ivan Lendl seated to one side. His face rarely showed emotion, but it was clear he somehow made a difference to Andy’s performance.

Yet, should they play each other in a match, Andy would win easily.

In fact, given that men’s tennis has improved so much in recent years, Andy may well have easily beaten Lendl in his prime. So what does the coach bring to someone like Andy Murray?

When professional sportspeople speak about their careers, they will talk about two main areas they need to work on - the need to practice their craft and to improve their technical capability, but also their mindset. Every successful player will agree that strong belief and a clear focus will have a massive impact on success.

Ivan Lendl is unlikely to be instructing Andy on how to hold his racket.

Instead he will be helping Andy confront the myriad of demons that may prevent him from winning the prized trophy.

The same is true in business. Over time people build an impressive array of personal skills and competencies and if they need to know something, they tend to Google it. But there are far bigger issues that don’t have simple answers, which can stop people from reaching their potential: “I lack confidence, how do I overcome this?”

RESTORING HMS WARRIOR

s you arrive at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the stunning sleek, black lines of Britain’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship commands the harbour and takes your breath away.

Launched in 1860, HMS Warrior was the largest, fastest and most powerful ship of her day and reset international warship design almost overnight.

Foreign navies soon copied her design, and in only ten years, Warrior was overtaken by progress. She was withdrawn from sea service and became little more than a floating hulk, relegated to rotten row.

But Warrior had not been forgotten. In 1967 people started to talk about restoring Warrior. Prominent in this campaign was Sir John Smith, who had formed the Manifold Trust five years earlier to restore threatened items of our national heritage.

Warrior was towed 800 miles to Hartlepool where the world’s largest maritime project ever undertaken then began. The start of the restoration was devoted to safely removing material added after her first commission, like the poop deck and the 200 long tons of concrete decking. Intensive research was done to find detailed descriptions of the ship and her equipment as of 1862 to make the restoration as accurate as economically feasible. Sources included surviving official records, and the papers of those who had served on the ship during her active service.

Replacement of the ship’s lower masts in wood was not feasible, so they were made of steel tube cut and welded to shape. Warrior’s engines, boilers and auxiliary machinery were considered too expensive to rebuild, so replicas were built to duplicate the look of the real equipment.

There were mixed emotions in Hartlepool as the town bid farewell to the ship that had spent seven years in its care. On the afternoon of Friday 12th June 1987, Warrior was pulled by tugs from her moorings and she began the four-day journey back to Portsmouth.

On June 16th 1987, 58 years after she left Portsmouth in a terrible state, Warrior made her triumphant return.

At 5:45pm the towrope was dropped; Warrior was home to stay.

Even the House of Commons heard of Warrior’s fate. MPs were told that Warrior could serve as “a potent source of education and inspiration for our children....”. Smith’s drive and persistence led to a committee, chaired by the Duke of Edinburgh, meeting in 1968 to discuss Warrior’s future. From this emerged the Maritime Trust, formed to raise money for the preservation of our naval heritage. In 1978, Sir John Smith agreed that the Manifold Trust would underwrite the cost of restoration, estimated at £4-8 million, and the ship was handed over to the Maritime Trust in 1979. In 1983 ownership was

transferred to the Ship’s Preservation Trust, which became the Warrior Preservation Trust in 1985.

n recent weeks, my colleagues have got me hooked to Chef’s Table; in each episode of this Netflix documentary, a world renowned chef is profiled. The programme about Dan Barber - owner of Blue Hill restaurant in Manhattan - who has rewritten the farm to table concept - struck me and made me consider the question: what is, or should be, the purpose of a restaurant?

industry sustainable and ethical is common sense. This could be through the use of organic produce, supporting local farmers or food producers, or buying Fairtrade products. It could involve using renewable energy or compostable take away products. Or it could be making a commitment to local projects and community initiatives.

I believe an innate passion for food (whatever type that may be) is vital, as is a love for hospitality; these provide the beating heart of any good food venue. A friend said recently that cafes and restaurants are like living beings - they need to be nurtured and looked after as honest direction and integrity will provide a soul.

Ideally the type of social responsibility should be in line with the direction of the venue itself; we are all different and what is one man’s cause may not be another’s. For example a fine food business may have at its heart the use of local, organic produce; a fish restaurant may support local fishermen; a wholefoods shop may drive home the use of recyclable products.

Community initiatives such as the food cycle project reuse surplus food to provide meals for those at risk of food poverty.

This is why so many different styles of restaurant can co-exist. We have a blossoming food scene in Southsea with well-established venues, modern eateries, coffee shops and cafes all side by side – each with their own purpose, story and charm that appeal to different people within our community Yet aside from their own story and journey, should restaurants also have a sense of social responsibility? Not just in terms of public safety and hygiene, but in a far broader, ethical sense?

I believe that the answer to this is yes. If your passion is food then working towards making that 24

Although it may seem like additional burden on small business, it’s amazing how small steps can make a bigger difference to benefit everyone, and how much this can make a community come together. Give and the world will give back.

hen Soraya and Jason Parker became the new proprietors of the popular restaurant Becketts, they were faced with the dilemma of whether to carry on as before, or to change it completely. In fact the decision was made for them, because it became apparent that the entire fabric of the historic building needed to be renewed, giving the couple a blank canvas to create a new and exciting premises. Natural materials used imaginatively bare wood and brick, were complemented with ambient lighting and a state of the art kitchen. Plus, an innovative private dining room on the first floor which features a large round table to seat 12, perfect for birthdays, anniversaries and business meetings.

A transformed menu, with lively Modern British/Mediterranean dishes. The braised neck of lamb, served with mustard mash and garden vegetables is a popular choice, as is the warm globe artichoke salad, with roasted vegetables, capers and chick peas, and a tempting selection of desserts to follow. The atmosphere?

However, they’re in safe hands, with Jaime Riand as Beckett’s general manager, formerly of The Royal Hotel in Ventnor, IOW and head chef, Chris Leaf, who has cooked with Gordon Ramsey and at The Goodwood Hotel.

Ultimately, it’s all change at Becketts, but as we all know, change can be good – very good indeed.

Wickham was voted Best Festival (Under 15,000 Capacity) at the Live UK Music Business Awards 2015 for the four-day fiesta. As well as three stages showing off the lineup, the addition of a fourth stage will allow festival-goers to hear some of Hampshire’s best up and coming talent.

This year’s lineup includes Tony Hadley, The Stranglers, Lindisfarne and the SAS Band featuring Queen’s drummer Roger Taylor. Added attractions include a range of family films to see at the Groovy Movie solar-powered cinema. There is also a cartoon cinema, storytelling, puppet theatre and make ‘n’ take crafts tent. And, to top it all off, there’s a digital funfair, playbus, laser arena, bouncy castles and children’s entertainers, all of which are free once you’re inside the festival arena.

Boomtown is one of the UK’s festival wonders. It’s a noncommercial work of art and this month will see them turn the first page of 2016’s ‘Chapter 8’. The festival has ballooned to a staggering 50,000 so-called ‘citizens’ since Boomtown’s streets first opened in 2009. Boomtown Fair’s mind-blowing creative landscape is diverse and eclectic. And, if you throw in the festival’s fictional yet real-esque backstory, which develops with each passing year, then you’re in for one hell of an experience. The past weeks have seen the festival unleash a stream of lineup announcements, one for each of Boomtown’s nine themed districts. here is a sense of a momentum in Portsmouth as people recognise the cultural events that are now on offer in the city. The Vue cinema brings us live ballet, opera and theatre at a fraction of the seat price in London. The New Theatre Royal, (NTR), newly refurbished, is winning back audiences with an exciting programme of performances. The Hotwalls ARTches studios have just opened, along with new galleries and art trails, while all musical tastes are catered for with live music across town.

Meanwhile, Portsea Island Decorative and Fine Arts Society, (PIDFAS), brings high calibre speakers, experts in their chosen field, to the city for monthly presentations in the University’s Eldon Building, where members/visitors enjoy cinema-style seating and superb digital projection.

On Sunday 11th September 10am-4pm, as part of the National Heritage Open Days, PIDFAS, in partnership with the New Theatre Royal, will allow people to explore the theatre and to see the restored Heritage Matcham/Phipps theatre and the new studio spaces, including areas not normally open to the public. Talks on Victorian Music Hall, the NTR’s secret history, along with other tales of the theatre can all be enjoyed.

PIDFAS is also bringing the acclaimed speaker, Charles Harris, whose presentation, specially commissioned for NTR will be ‘Sarah Bernhardt; Muse of the Art Nouveau’, (at 11am & 2pm).

Inspired by this gesture, the presentation will explore the influence of this flamboyant actress, from theatre costumes to biscuit tins. All delivered with great enthusiasm and sheer entertainment value.

SUMMER, SUMMER, SUMMERTIME – THINGS TO DO IN SOUTHSEA ON A SUNNY DAY Emma Beatty It’s August and school’s out – time to head to the beaches and get out and about on boats (possibly even get a ferry to the Isle of Wight).

In these bewildering post-Brexit days, at least we can reassure ourselves that there’s a heck of a lot going on on Southsea Common and surrounds.

The big headline event is at the end of the month, the mighty Victorious, 27-28 Aug. This huge summer event for local families gets more interesting every year. In the days leading up, here’re some other things to do in Southsea to get you in the mood.

Champagne is flowing at Southsea Castle every Friday night from 6pm with DJs and lovely views (nb: except 5th Aug as there’s a private party). Live at the Bandstand is in full swing with free live music every Sunday from 1-4pm. (Soul & Motown: 7 Aug; Tributes and Covers: 14 Aug; Seen on TV: 21 Aug).

Portsmouth International Kite Festival has its 25th anniversary this year, 13-14 Aug. The Common will be covered in colourful fluttering kites in all shapes and sizes – from giant Supermen,to swirly squids and dainty Japanese flying kites with intricate paintwork. This year, there’s a retro theme, with vintage kite displays - so dust off your ancient childhood relics and bring them along.

Also, down in the dockyard, make sure to have a look round the new Boathouse No.4 space; it’s got all sorts of boaty things.

There’s a free Summer Festival from 5-7 Aug. You can watch boatbuilding experts in action and see the ancient art of turning trees into beautiful, streamlined boats, and the intricacies of rope-making. There’s also a sleek, modern new restaurant/café on the second floor with fabulous floor-to-ceiling views of the passing ships outside.

For more glittering views, and something a bit more upmarket, try the seven-course dinner at the pop-up Sky Restaurant at the top of the Spinnaker Tower – courtesy of celebrity chef, Stephanie Moon. She’s picked out produce from lovely Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to cook up a perfect summer feast.

The Sky Restaurant runs every Friday in August.

If you want even more Portsmouth views, head to St Mary’s Church in Fratton where you can climb the church tower every Sunday; it’s just opened to the public for summer. It’s 167 ft high and gives 360degree views of the city – but you do have to climb the 207 steps to get up there.

There will be 100 guest kite fliers from all over the world: Australia, Japan, France, Germany and Switzerland. They’re performing amazing stunts, in-line kite ballets and the soaring “altitude sprint”.

There’ll also be children’s rides and kite workshops. Let’s hope it’s windy – not generally a problem in Southsea.

In the dockyard, The Mary Rose Museum has reopened in all its glory, allowing uninterrupted views of the famous Tudor flagship for the first time since it was raised from the seabed in the ‘70s – the culmination of an astonishing salvage and conservation story.

TWO ST JOHN’S COLLEGE STUDENTS TO APPEAR IN BIG-SCREEN ADAPTATION OF SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS

F

ans of Game of Thrones may know that Alfie Allen, who plays Theon Greyjoy was a student at St John’s, College Southsea. But the school has further theatrical connections - film director, the late Anthony Mingella, (The English Patient, Cold Mountain, The Talented Mr Ripley) and BBC newsreader George Alagiah both attended St John’s.

Cut to 2016 and two Year 11 pupils are about to appear alongside a host of British talent for the bigscreen adaption of the Arthur Ransome classic Swallows and Amazons, to be released on 19th August.

Seren Hawkes, from Portsmouth, and Dane Hughes, a boarding student from Yeovil, both aged 16 have just completed Year 11 at St John’s College, were selected to appear in the classic adventure story after the casting director visited a number of schools in the south. Directed by Philippa Lowthorpe (The Other Boleyn Girl, Call the Midwife and Jamaica Inn), the film was shot in the Lake District and Yorkshire.

Seren and Dane, who studied GCSE Drama at the

College, join a talented cast including Rafe Spall (The BFG, The Big Short), Andrew Scott (Spectre, Sherlock) and Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire, Brave). Set against the stunning backdrop of the Lake District, the film marks the feature debut of acclaimed director Philippa Lowthrope.

The Walker and Blackett children from the beloved Ransome story will be brought to life in this big screen adaptation by young breakthrough stars. Dane, who plays ‘John Walker’, and Seren, who plays ‘Nancy Blackett’, will join Orla Hill as ‘Susan Walker’, TeddieRose Malleson-Allen as ‘Tatty Walker’, Bobby McCulloch as ‘Roger Walker’, and Hannah Jayne Thorp as Nancy’s sister ‘Peggy Blackett’.

Seren comments, “I really enjoyed filming, it was such a good experience for me. I loved being with all the cast, we got on really well, and I really liked playing Nancy – she was a great character to play.”

I

’m sitting in the bright, clean reception area of Portsmouth’s Gym 01. Co-Director and Head Coach Gareth Johnson is telling me about changing perceptions. “‘When people at parties asked me what I did for a living, I used to say, “Have you heard of cage fighting?” And they’d say, “Oh, that sounds horrible!’”

Pause for a moment. What did you picture when you read the words cage fighting? Unless you’re already familiar with what is properly known as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), your mind may have conjured images of bloody violence.

But if you pictured gore, you’d be wrong. “Imagine all the Olympic disciplines - Judo, Boxing, Taekwondo, Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling - and combine them together,” Gareth explains. “MMA is a combat sport where any discipline can come out on top on any given day.”

What about the cage? “You put the fighters in a cage for safety, not brutality. Because you wouldn’t want a wrestling mat raised four feet off the ground. And because it’s a dynamic sport. You can’t have the risk of someone falling between the ropes of a boxing ring.”

the office. “A kid’s class is about to start,” Gareth explains. “It could get noisy.” Two young boys in trainers bounce in, proving his point.

So clearly, MMA training doesn’t just appeal to the combative egos of grown men? “Our gym is full of normal, regular men, women and children,” Gareth says. “We’ve got a very good system for nurturing people in every discipline. Looking after everyone at every stage is incredibly important.”

What draws people to train at Gym 01? “It gives you self confidence. You aren’t worried about walking home on your own. And you’re working everything from cardio to your core. Not only are you getting fit and losing weight, you start on that healthy living cycle and see people you train with getting fitter, and it inspires you to do more. Within six months to a year, you’ve toned up areas that you never imagined possible. It’s not like standing in a gym doing a bicep curl. It’s much more functional strength, an all-over workout.”

Safety always comes first in MMA. “The referee has much more control. If something isn’t safe, they stop it right away. Very few fights end in knockouts. Most people lose by submission or not defending themselves intelligently.”

At Gym 01, where people can train in any or all of the MMA disciplines, every coach, and the gym itself, has insurance. But no one has ever needed to claim. “You’ll get more injuries playing Sunday league football, because it’s not a controlled environment. Here, you know what to expect so you are prepared, and we teach you how to defend yourself.”

As if to further confound pre-conceived ideas, at this point we move away from reception (where vitaminpacked protein shakes are sold, and chest freezers are liberally stocked with super-healthy ready meals) and into 50

Gym 01 fighters compete globally. In May, Laura Howarth won a bout in California for Invicta, the biggest all-women promotion in the world. Some who train at the gym choose never to fight. Others start training for fitness, but find themselves drawn to spar. Gareth tells me, “There is no pressure to spar here. But in time, people want to test themselves because it’s a great marker of how far they’ve come. Also, it’s a thrill you can’t replicate.”

Gareth speaks from experience. Both he and co-owner Brian Adams fought professionally before opening Gym 01. There is fire in his eyes as recalls, “When that cage door shuts and you touch gloves, there are so many emotions running through you - excitement, fear, anxiety - all at once. When you win and your hand is raised, the euphoria is incredible. On the other end of the spectrum, there is no feeling worse than losing a fight.

Sacrificing your social life, your evenings and weekends, dieting for months, just to lose… It’s crushing. But what really makes a fighter is how they come back from that.

If you can’t come back from your failures, in any walk of life, you’re never going to reach the pinnacle. If you lose on a Saturday night and you’re back in the gym on Monday, that is fighting. It isn’t always about winning.”

Setting up Gym 01 itself proved quite a fight. In the shadow of the financial crisis, Gareth and Brian struggled to borrow from banks that were suddenly cagey (no pun intended) and spent several years ‘scraping by’, juggling bills month by month. As he reflects on that trying time, Gareth’s fighting spirit shines through. ‘There’s no luck involved in being

successful, there’s only hard work. And be sure to surround yourself with positive people.

“Running a gym is never going to make me a rich,” says Gareth. “But if I could bottle the atmosphere we have here and put it on a supermarket shelf, I’d be a multi-millionaire.”

Gareth brings the same determination, professionalism and positivity to Gym 01’s sister company, Shock N Awe - a live MMA show hosted at the Mountbatten Centre. Considered to be one of the UK’s biggest MMA promotions, it attracts high level competitors from around the world, and regularly showcases Gym 01 fighters.

Audience members often walk through the doors of Gym 01 the next day, inspired by what they’ve seen.

Others just enjoy the spectacle and unpredictability of this all-round martial art. Thinking ahead, Gareth notes, “I’ve got plans to make our next event even more entertaining, to elevate it. We’re on the cusp of big things.” I don’t doubt it. After all, these guys know how to fight for success.

TIME TO RUN

ith about twelve weeks left, it’s time to get training for the 2016 Great South Run (23rd October).

Twelve weeks is generally considered a good training period and significant progress can be made by training frequently and smartly. The event is considered to be one of the world’s leading tenmilers and attracts elite athletes, alongside charity, club and fun runners. We’re lucky to have such a prestigious race on our doorstep. The atmosphere is electric. Personal highlights for me include running past the band at The Tenth Hole. The Henderson Road crowds with their sound systems keeping runners going at a point where you’re 8 miles in and find yourself running away from the finish line and, of course, running through our Historic Dockyard.

TOP TIPS FOR GREAT SOUTH RUN TRAINING: Plan and record your mileage. If you’re brand new to running, start with 1-2 miles and look to progress evenly over the twelve weeks.

Wear appropriate running trainers. A gait analysis will ensure you have trainers that suit your running stride and will help prevent injury.

Consider sports therapy. Prevention is always better than cure, and when training hard, I keep regular appointments with fully qualified and experienced massage therapists to ensure my body is ready for the physical demands of training. Adequate stretching, ice baths and regular foam rolling will also help.

Keep your training varied. Running at a regular pace 4 or 5 times a week will probably see your progress plateau very quickly. Instead, incorporate the following: • Tempo runs - shorter distances at a quicker pace than usual.

• HIIT training (high intensity interval training) will see your heart rate fluctuate and will get you both fitter and faster. They can be done with a mix of sprints and rest periods or by using bodyweight 52

exercises such as burpees, jumping jacks and mountain climbers.

• Single leg strengthening: When we run, we’re balancing on one foot at a time. Most of us have imbalances and exercises such as squats and two footed leg presses or jumps can serve to reaffirm them. Instead, incorporate single leg exercises such as hops, lunges and single leg deadlifts.

• Don’t neglect your glutes or core! This is key to avoiding injury and we can train our glutes or core in the comfort of our own homes without any equipment. Try glute bridges and variants of the planks to start with. I highly recommend taking regular Pilates classes to strengthen the core and improve flexibility.

• One long run per week is enough! This is the one people tend not to believe! Increase your distance in small increments on a weekly basis running at the same pace each week. This is called ‘race pace’ – make sure you’re fuelled and fresh for it.

• Finally, Take 4-5 days off training prior to race day. Your body will thank you and your race performance will significantly improve.
