Wishful thinking has inspired my choice of picture books for this issue of Salad Days. As I write, it is dark, there is a storm howling outside, and my fingers are almost too cold to type. But the books I have chosen reassure me that warm sunny days will be here soon and being outdoors will be a joy again.

Bothered by Bugs by Emily Gravett made me laugh but teaches an important lesson. Pete, the Badger, is reading in his new cookery book about berries and all the jams, crumbles, juices and cakes he could make with them. But he is bothered by a fly - and then a cloud of flies. He and his friends decide to catch them all in jam jars. Not satisfied with that, they catch all the other ‘pests’ – bugs, beetles, bees, wasps, ants, snails, and butterflies, until the forest is free of them all. But, of course, when they try to harvest fruit for their cooking, there is none. Not only this, but the forest floor is a mess of poo. The animals are mystified until a blue bottle explains that all the so-called pests have important jobs to do – like pollination and cleaning up the forest floor. The insects are all released to go off and do their jobs; the fruit harvest next autumn is good, and the cookery (and the feasting!) can begin. Emily Gravett’s rhyming text and bright colourful illustrations teeming with minibeasts are a delight. The book includes a few simple fruit-based recipes and clear accurate sketches of some of the insects she writes about, good enough for identification purposes, so her book multi-tasks as well as entertains! Lovely for children of about 4 or 5 upwards.

The children in Unity Street School Saves the Planet by Sheena Davies are considerably better informed about the importance of ecology than Pete the Badger and his friends. After a talk about climate change and conservation, they decide to create a wildflower meadow in their school grounds, with the help of Mr Moss, the caretaker. The book is about the steps they take – litter-picking, planting beans and saplings, making a pebble pond, staging a jumble sale to raise funds for wildflower seeds – and the result is a magnificent little meadow. There’s not a lot of text but it, and the bustling illustrations, are very inspiring. Even if a wildflower meadow isn’t possible, the final page suggests other ways in which young children can help the planet.
All of these books and thousands more are on the shelves at Hart’s Books (www.hartsbooks.co.uk) in Saffron Walden. If none of my chosen books meets your need, do speak to the staff there, who know their stock and will be able to help you find something perfect.
Jo Burch - Founder of the Words in Walden Book Festival
Another person who protected the countryside she loved is Beatrix Potter. In Beatrix and her Bunnies: the Story of Beatrix Potter by Rebecca Colby and Caroline BonneMuller, the story is told of how her pet rabbits, Benjamin and Peter, inspired the young, lonely, Beatrix to draw them, and then to write stories about them, so they would live for ever. The book recounts how she struggled to find a publisher but then became one of the most well-known and well-loved children’s authors, whose writing made her wealthy enough to leave more than 4000 acres of land in the Lake District to the National Trust. Not only is this a lovely story, with plenty of period detail in the eye-catching illustrations, but it is a great introduction to biographical writing for very young children.

The illustrations are the thing in Mouse on the River by Alice Melvin. In the very simple, gently rhyming text, Mouse’s progress downstream in his little rowing boat takes him through woodland, under bridges, past house boats, through villages, locks, and down to where the river meets the sea. That’s all that happens but along the way we have gorgeous pictures of the habitats he passes through. Not only that, but there are flaps to lift (gently as they are paper and therefore fragile), so we see inside houseboats, post-offices, locks, beach huts, and more, adding to the wealth of detail to savour. The final pages of the book offer some natural history facts about the habitats and creatures Mouse passes, and then there’s a page of the items Mouse packed for his trip for children to go back and look for in the pictures. This is a charming book for children aged perhaps 4 upwards, but they’ll still be enjoying revisiting it when they’re 8 or 9. And it will ready them for Wind in the Willows when the time is right!
Nature is again the focus in Yuval Zommer’s Big Book of Nature
Art which offers 22 projects using natural or recycled materials to make everything from dragonfly suncatchers to rock pets and even offers hints on how to start a museum. I love these sorts of books which send butterflies of anticipation through me even now, thinking of how much fun it always is creating this sort of art. Fortunately for me and my clumsy fingers, Yuval Zommer explains that ‘the purpose of these projects is not to produce the most amazing moon moth but to connect with nature and let your creativity run wild!’ Phew! The illustrations are clear, lively, and inspiring, as is the text. I can imagine any one of these projects being the sort of thing to absorb a group of young friends on a playdate. Or being an activity for children to share with a grandparent. If I’m completely honest, I rather fancy having a go by myself! And, as an extra treat, there is an ant to be found hiding on every page. This would make a super present for a creative child.

I’m Emma who owns and runs Saffron SuperDogs in and around Saffron Walden. I am a fully qualified dog and puppy trainer.

Ive been running training classes for 11 and a bit years and I’ve had thousands of local dogs through the door (I’ve actually had dogs from London, Kent, Cambridge and Scotland come along too!) I run a selection of classes; puppy through to older dogs. Classes to suit all ages, sizes and breeds. They’re fun, children and families all welcome to come along and join in. Owners and dogs learn more and enjoy it if it’s kept fun and relaxed; while still learning lots! It’s modern, reward based, positive training (lots of sausages!) I cover everything from teaching your pups to walk nicely without pulling to teaching them to fetch a tissue when you sneeze! Not jumping up at you to playing dead. I can work on all issue areas you have and teach some pretty impressive tricks! I specialise in building confidence in rescue dogs - I have fostered, trained and rehomed coming up to 70 dogs and puppies (sucker for a sad dog…!)
My favourite thing to teach is scentwork; it’s fantastic for all dogs! Any age, any breed and size it’s fully inclusive. It’s super clever and great fun but it can also help a nervous dog gain confidence and a hyper dog become calm. We basically teach your dog to be a police/airport sniffer dog! Dogs noses are incredible. When dogs are resting their respiratory rate is around 15 reps per minute, when they’re walking it’s around 30 reps per minute. When they’re running it’s around 60 reps per minute, when dogs are scent training/tracking it’s 140-200 reps per minute! It’s brilliant for wearing dogs out. 10 minutes of scentwork is equivalent to an hours walk. If you’re interested in learning about scentwork and working with your pup (in any training) give me a shout!

Jacq and Wills Landscapes is a garden design, build and maintenance practice based in Saffron Walden. Founded by Jacqueline and Will, the business has grown into a family practice, now joined by their daughter Sasha, her fiancé Reuben and their skilled team. United by a love of creativity and nature, they believe gardens play a vital role in wellbeing and in life’s most meaningful moments. They see gardens as everyday backdrops to family life; from birthday parties and relaxed summer suppers to quiet moments watching the seasons change.
Designed to feel calm, private and timeless, the garden encourages slower rhythms through warm clay pavers, moss-softened Yorkstone rockery and a gently bubbling steel water feature that brings movement while masking outside noise. Thoughtfully placed seating offers space for both conversation and quiet reflection while subtle lighting extends the garden into the evening.
A year on, they continue to care for the garden which remains a place of calm and retreat.
If you’re looking to create a garden your family can enjoy for years to come, Jacq and Wills Landscapes would love to help.

Dance and performing arts play a powerful role in education, supporting children and young people far beyond the stage. Engaging in dance develops physical health, coordination, balance and spatial awareness, while also strengthening discipline and perseverance. Learning choreography enhances memory, focus and cognitive processing, as students must listen carefully, retain sequences and respond to timing and musical cues. Performing arts also nurture creativity and imagination, giving young people the freedom to explore ideas, emotions and storytelling in a safe and structured environment.
Equally important are the social and emotional benefits. Dance builds confidence and self-esteem as students achieve goals and perform in front of others. It encourages teamwork, communication and mutual respect, as success often depends on collaboration. For many children, performing arts provide a sense of belonging and a positive outlet for self-expression, which can significantly support mental wellbeing.
In education today, there is increasing recognition of the importance of creative subjects in developing well-rounded learners. While schools face academic pressures and funding challenges, there is a growing movement to protect arts education, highlighting its impact on resilience, engagement and future employability. Creative skills such as adaptability, collaboration and problem-solving are now widely valued, reinforcing the vital place of dance and performing arts within modern education.
