Dear Readers,
It is with immense joy and gratitude that we welcome you to the 100th issue of our beloved publication. We could only dream of reaching such a remarkable milestone. Today, as we reflect on this achievement, we are filled with a profound sense of accomplishment and a deep appreciation for the unwavering support of our readers, contributors, and the team. Over the years, we have explored countless topics, shared inspiring stories, and facilitated discussions that have touched hearts and expanded minds. We’ve embraced the ever-changing landscape of information and technology since taking over the magazine from the founder Harriet during Covid. As we celebrate this milestone we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone that has contributed to this publication over the years.

SALAD DAYS 100TH ISSUE
Congratulations Lisa and Tam for the 100’th edition of Salad Days. I am thrilled that Salad Days continues to provide local information for parents, carers and teachers of young children whilst also showcasing local businesses and services. All with colour and panache! It was in 2004, after I had failed to find a local brownie pack for my daughter, that I first thought of creating a central source of information on activities available for young children. During my search for a brownie pack, I had seen many such details on village hall notice boards or in parish magazines – but nothing that had it all in one place. I had found the proverbial “Gap In the market”! It was another year of trawling for the information I wanted to include, visiting schools to see if they would like to participate, talking to potential advertisers and visiting printers until, in the Autumn of 2005, the first Issue of Salad Days became a reality. By 2020 – my daughter had not only finished her education but had moved out and was fully employed so it was time to let go! I was absolutely delighted that Tam and Lisa were keen to take over and I am so proud of how well they have moved it forward – it’s still the same Salad Days I used to publish but even better! 6 education Sally Powell, Executive Partner and Family Law solicitor at Tees looks at how divorced or separated parents can plan ahead and schedule childcare over the school holidays this year. The New Year is a good time to take stock of how the last twelve months went and what you want to achieve over the next year for your family. Most of us look forward with anticipation to the Christmas holidays – but they are not always harmonious, especially if you are divorced and perhaps have a blended family. For divorced or separated parents, Christmas can be the hardest holiday of all to manage amicably. With firmly established family traditions to navigate and extended families making demands on your (and your children’s) time, the pressure is on – and can cause things to unravel rather quickly. Add to that a desire to make it a magical time for your children and you can end up returning to work in January with the thought that it has all been a compromise, with no one actually doing as they wished. You may even have spent a considerable portion of the holidays contemplating how things need to be different next year!
www.saladdaysmag.uk
Top tips for divorced or separated parents to agree holiday childcare Plan the year now
With this still fresh in your mind, now is a good time to work on a 12-month plan with your former partner to plan ahead for this year’s holidays. Doing this now, before you have started to make plans, helps head off any feelings of resentment. It also protects you from last-minute bookings and changes of dates. This is not only a schedule for going away on a holiday with your children but also a time to plan childcare during the school holidays. With the children likely to have more weeks off school than you and your partner have annual leave it takes some planning now so that holiday clubs and activities can be booked in advance and family help, if it is available, is requested. If communication with your former partner is strained then holiday planning may be more difficult. It is not unusual for one partner to be more organised than the other and expect that holidays are arranged on a first-come-first-served basis. They may even tell the children before they tell you about an upcoming holiday.
Mediation after separation
Expect more Expert legal services and independent financial advice Call Cambridge – 01223 311141 Bishop’s Stortford – 01279 755200 Saffron Walden – 01799 527299
If you are already formally separated from your partner you may be familiar with family mediation. This opportunity for structured discussion is often needed just as much after separation as before. Mediation is a neutral space where you can both meet with an impartial legal professional who will listen, help you reach an amicable decision and document all that is said. It allows you to share the holiday periods, to understand if this is not necessarily a 50/50 split of the children’s time, work out how holidays are to be paid for, choose holiday activities, and discuss if grandparents, relatives or friends can be asked to help out. You may also want to formalise arrangements for contacting one parent while the other is away and for deciding which holiday activities you are both happy for your children to participate in.
Planning the holidays as your children grow up.
As children get older their holiday requirements change. While younger children may not want too much time away from their main carer, older children may want to have a say in where they spend the school holidays and if they go away. It is usual for parents to review the situation annually and make appropriate changes as the children’s needs change. A mediator will not tell you what to do but will help you and your former partner look at the year ahead objectively, helping you avoid obvious conflicts, and ensuring the whole family enjoys their holidays.

Santa’s Grotto
Remembering Ollie Toms
Ollie Toms a local qualified tennis coach who taught in and around Stansted, Newport, Saffron Walden and Clavering sadly lost his life at just 35 years old. Ollie underwent an emergency heart-related operation on Sunday 1 October. The initial information was that the operation went well, however we were informed that his situation had deteriorated. Ollie lost his fight and passed away at 11.20am on Friday 6 October. Ollie dedicated himself to helping people in the community and especially the young students to thrive in a sport which he so loved. He had a very special ability to encourage and nurture people, regardless of their abilities. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and all those children in our community who will miss seeing him each week for his uplifting tennis lesson.
If you are looking to book a Father Christmas experience this year then look no further. Santa’s Grotto is open from 21st December - 24th December at South Mill Arts this holiday season. Start your festive adventure with a fun craft activity before making your way up to see Santa. Not only will you receive a special gift, but you will also hear all about the festive preparations from Santa himself. Your visit will end with delicious hot chocolate and cookies in our VIP Christmas Café - the perfect treat to end a magical experience. Please note each ticket admits one child and one adult to our grotto. Due to space restrictions, we cannot accommodate more than one adult per ticket. Christmas Treats
There were no reviews of children’s books in the first issue of Salad Days, but it has been my privilege and joyful self-indulgence to have written book reviews for every issue since – a brilliant excuse to spend time in the children’s section of bookshops, finding the best picture books on the shelves to write about. Long may Salad Days last! I’m particularly pleased that the 100th issue is a Winter one because it means I can list my top ten all-time favourite Christmas books for children. I have a basket of these which still comes out on Advent Sunday every year, even though my children are now 21, 23, and 25 respectively and think I’m bonkers.
www.saladdaysmag.uk
A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas is essential to our family Christmas traditions (my children still demand that I read it aloud on Christmas Eve, if only now to laugh at my dreadful attempt at a Welsh accent). Lyrically beautiful, funny, and deftly observed, it deserves a reader far better than me. Any edition is good, but I particularly like the one illustrated by Edward Ardizzone.
The almost wordless classics, Father Christmas, Father Christmas Goes on Holiday, and The Snowman, all by Raymond Briggs, are of course on the list.
Jesus’ Christmas Party by Nicholas Allen is the irreverently funny account of the Nativity from the Inn Keeper’s perspective, increasingly annoyed at being woken at all hours of the night by a stream of unexpected guests. The Snow Lady by Shirley Hughes brilliantly captures a child’s less-than-generous feelings about a sharptongued neighbour.
Babushka by Sandra Ann Horn and Sophie Fatus is probably my number one – the original Russian Christmas tale of the grandmother with the ‘empty place’ in her heart who travels to Bethlehem with gifts for the new baby but gives them all away on her journey. The Night Before Christmas by Clement Moore – all editions of this are fun but the cut-paper version illustrated by Niroot Puttapipit is simply stunning.
The Lost Christmas Gift by Andrew Beckham is a very unusual mystical story about a Christmas gift which arrives many years late.
Not all the books above are in print, but I promise you won’t regret the effort of seeking out pre-loved copies (though I can’t imagine why anyone would ever want to part with theirs). They are very special and individual responses to Christmas. I hope you will agree!
Jo Burch - Founder of Words in Walden
The Christmas Mouse by Toby Forward and Ruth Brown is a beautifully illustrated and moving retelling of the Scrooge story. I always struggle to read the last pages aloud because of the lump in my throat.

Uttlesford Citizens Advice urgently needs more volunteers to support people through the cost of living crisis. More and more people are coming to us for support to manage their energy costs and help with budgeting and debts. We also help people with housing issues, benefit entitlements, problems at work and family matters. You don’t need to have specific experience or qualifications to join us, (although you do need to be non-judgmental, able to talk to people and familiar with a computer). All our volunteers receive training and there is a paid member of staff that you can turn to for extra support whenever you feel you need it. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and have many different reasons for volunteering. Volunteering with us gives you the opportunity to help other people and build skills and confidence as part of an inclusive, friendly team and the wider local community. Our volunteer roles are varied, challenging and rewarding; hours are flexible so fit well with family or other existing commitments. Volunteering can be a route into employment, or an opportunity to try something different. Many of our volunteers go on to paid employment as volunteering with us provides skills and experience that is valued by many employers. A lot of our paid staff, including our Chief Executive, started out as volunteers. So, if you would like to make a real difference to people’s lives and have a positive impact on your community by giving information and advice that empowers people to tackle the root cause of their issues, please get in touch today! For more information and an application form, visit our website, www.uttlesfordca.org.uk or call us on 01799 618840

Nutrition for new parents Having a baby is one of the biggest adventures you can embark on, but there is no denying that it can be mentally and physically exhausting at times. Here are some Nutrition and Lifestyle tips to fill your toolbox with more energy and calm. • Always keep a bottle of water by your side. When you get stuck, you get stuck. Aim to drink sips throughout the day. • Aim to have a slow releasing carbohydrate with each meal, oats, brown rice, wholegrain bread, bagels, pasta. • Ensure there is plenty of protein in your diet to help you feel satiated, turkey, salmon, chicken, eggs, feta, mackerel, beans, pulses and nut butters. • Load up on antioxidants; try to not focus too much on nutrients, unless advised to do so. An easier way to get what you need is by eating a rainbow of colours of fruits and vegetables and having variety throughout the week. • A quick meal can be as nutritious as a meal that takes hours to cook. There are lots of 15-minute meals online on BBC food website and some great books such as Jamie Oliver and Joe Wicks. • Practicing yoga for 10-15 minutes a day for a window of calm or listening to some peaceful music.
