To prepare for primary school, focus on fostering independence, establishing routines, and gathering practical supplies. While academic skills are helpful, schools primarily look for “school readiness,” which means your child can manage their basic needs and interact well with others.
Skills for Independence
Toileting: Ensure your child can use the toilet independently, wipe themselves, and wash their hands thoroughly.
Dressing: Practice putting on uniforms, zipping up coats, and changing in and out of a PE kit.
Feeding: If they are taking a packed lunch, practice opening their lunchbox and any wrapped packaging independently.

Hygiene: Teach them to blow and wipe their own nose and understand when they need to wash their hands.
Label everything: Use durable, wash-proof labels for uniforms, shoes, water bottles, and lunchboxes to prevent lost items.
Buy the essentials: Secure a school uniform, PE kit, sturdy backpack, and comfortable school shoes (Velcro is recommended for beginners).
Practice the route: Walk or drive the “school run” during the summer to help your child become familiar with the journey.
Attend inductions: Go to school welcome sessions to meet teachers, see the classroom, and understand drop-off procedures.
Adjust sleep: Gradually move to an earlier bedtime and wakeup time 1–2 weeks before school starts.
Social play: Arrange playdates or visit local parks to encourage turn-taking, sharing, and interacting with other children. Talk it through: Share positive stories about school and use shows or books to explain what a typical school day looks like. Manage emotions: Acknowledge that feeling nervous is normal; keep your goodbyes brief and confident on the first day to help them settle.
Key Point: Your child does not need to be able to read or write perfectly before they start; focusing on confidence and self-care is often more beneficial.

Practice hairstyles where all the hair is up. This helps avoid headlice!!
To prepare for the transition to secondary school, focus on practising the new school route, setting up an independent morning routine, and stocking up on specific equipment like scientific calculators and geometry sets.
Uniform Prep: Buy uniform early and label every item. Practise doing up ties or tricky buttons if they aren’t used to them.
Bag Check: Choose a bag that fits A4 folders and a laptop or tablet if the school uses them.
The biggest shift is often the “invisible” skills like time management.
The School Run: Practise the commute (bus, train, or walk) at least once during the morning rush hour to understand timings.
Morning Drills: Start the “school sleep schedule” 1–2 weeks before term starts. Encourage them to pack their own bag the night before.
Timetable Practice: Print a sample timetable and help them understand “Week A/Week B” rotations. Use tools like the Secondary School Planner to track subjects.
Emotional Support
It is normal for kids to feel a mix of excitement and “big school” nerves.

Address Worries: Common fears include getting lost or losing a bus pass. Walk through “what if” scenarios to build their confidence. Social Connections: Arrange meetups with classmates over the summer so they see a familiar face on day one.
Manage Your Anxiety: Children often pick up on parental stress. Stay positive and focus on new opportunities like clubs or different subjects.
Key Tip: Use a Printable Transition Toolkit to create checklists for their locker or bedroom wall to help them stay organised in the first few weeks.

I’ve chosen books for this issue of Salad Days which relate to adventures you may be having during the summer. If you’re not doing those things, your children can go on the same adventures in their imaginations by reading the books. So, there’s a book with all sorts of nature activities; one which shows what happens in airports and why; a book which teaches some simple vocabulary in 12 other languages; a book about learning to ride a bike; and then, the ultimate adventure that we’d all love to go on – visiting the Magic Faraway Tree.
The film’s great but the book is so much better…

We’re all told to look after books, but Rewild this book, illustrated by Lizzie Lomax, demands otherwise. It says it’s ‘A nature activity book that can be planted’. I suggest you leave that activity until last (directions are on the final page) – but most of the suggestions in the book involve getting it muddy, sticking things into it, letting it get rained on, allowing minibeasts to crawl over it, squishing scented plants onto its pages, and many other investigations and artistic activities destined to destroy it. At the end of the summer the book will be in no shape to sit back on a boring bookshelf – it wants to learn how messy and exciting the outdoors can be, and then to be allowed to return to nature. It’s a brilliantly liberating concept!

If you’re going away on holiday and dreading the long wait in airports, how about giving a child Behind the Scenes: Airports, illustrated by Maxim Usik, a book which explains in simple terms what’s going on in and around the departure lounge. It answers questions like ‘who flies the plane when the pilot needs the loo?’, ‘how do horses get to the Olympics?’, ‘who cooks all the meals’, and ‘can a body scanner see me naked?’, and explains more technical things like what the scissor-lift trucks and belt loader trucks do, and what happens in a Control Tower. There are lots of lively illustrations and the text is clear, providing a satisfying level of interesting detail. It’s quite a large format book so might be better to be read at home ahead of a flight but, armed with the knowledge it provides, any child would be happy to spend hours watching it all taking place around them in an airport.

Another book to prepare a child for travelling abroad is Big Brilliant World by Aysha Tengiz. On each double page spread there’s a colourful illustration of one of twelve of the world’s capital cities with snippets of information and some basic vocabulary which children might like to learn. On the page for Budapest, there are facts about the Danube, the hot springs, the national dishes, and the Hungarian words for ‘Hello!’, ‘I love you’, ‘That’s delicious!’, ‘Thank you!’ and so on. It’s the sort of book that I’d have loved as a child, allowing me to adventure through a host of new lands, learning a little bit about each, comparing the languages, the architecture, the foods, and the culture. It doesn’t really matter whether you’re going to those countries or not – you certainly can in the daydreams which this book will inspire!

Summer is often the time that children learn to ride their bikes. If it’s proving tricky, Frank and Bert: the one where Bert Learns to Ride a Bike by Chris NaylorBallesteros might just give a nervous child the confidence they need to pick themselves up off the ground and give it another go. Frank tries to help his friend Bert to ride a bike, but Bert wibble-wobbles all over the place, causing chaos. Frank does what all parents do – he runs along behind Bert, holding on, until he seems stable and then lets go. It ends in disaster and Bert is very upset and cross with Frank. In the end Frank finds a way, and Bert is satisfactorily launched. There’s a delightful twist in the tale.

If the sun isn’t shining and it’s too wet to play and you’re sat in the house on a cold, cold wet day (recognise that?!), I recommend Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree as the perfect escapist adventure story. I loved it as a child; I loved reading it to my children; they loved rereading it to themselves; and, as I write this, my daughter (now aged 23) and I can’t wait to go and see the film. Who wouldn’t want to find a magic tree at the top of which there’s a community of extraordinary folk and a series of wonderful lands to visit as they pass by on clouds? I think it’s the best thing that Enid Blyton wrote, and one of the best books there is for firing a child’s imagination. I know the film will be very different from the book but I’m fully confident that the adventures will seem as fresh as they did the first time I read them more than 50 years ago.
I hope that your summer is filled with adventures for the children in your care but, if not, I hope that one of the books I’ve chosen will inspire adventures in their imaginations. All the books are on the shelves at Hart’s Books (www.hartsbooks.co.uk) in Saffron Walden, where Max and the team can advise on all the adventurous reading you could possibly hope for!

We’re the husband and wife team behind Family Roots Properties, created to offer a warmer, more personal approach to property.
As a family ourselves, we know that home is about so much more than bricks and mortar. It is where everyday life unfolds, where memories are made, and where some of life’s biggest next chapters begin. That is why we wanted to build a property business that is genuinely peoplefocused, with care, communication and a thoughtful approach at the heart of everything we do.
The name Family Roots means a lot to us. It reflects not only our own family, but the part homes play in people’s lives.
Whether someone is moving on from a much-loved family home, finding the right place for their next stage of life, or looking for support with a rental property, we understand that there is always a bigger story behind it. We take the time to listen, to understand what matters most, and to offer a service that feels personal from the very beginning.
We offer a hands-on approach across both sales and lettings, helping people feel supported through decisions that can often feel overwhelming.
From tailored marketing and thoughtful presentation, to clear communication and guidance throughout the process, our aim is to make things feel simpler, calmer and more considered.
We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all service. Every home is different, every client is different, and the way we work should reflect that.
For us, good estate agency is about far more than listing a home online. It is about understanding how to position it well, how to present it beautifully, and how to communicate its story in a way that connects with the right people.
It is also about being there throughout the journey, answering questions, keeping things moving and making sure our clients feel informed and looked after at every stage.

Family Roots Properties is proudly powered by Keller Williams, allowing us to combine our personal, family-led approach with the tools, technology, training and support of a globally recognised property network.
It means our clients receive a service that feels close, attentive and tailored, while also benefiting from the wider reach and resources behind the scenes.
Whether you are considering selling, exploring lettings, wondering what your home may be worth, or simply starting to think about what comes next, we would love to have a chat and see how we can help.

At Sting Performing Arts, we are incredibly proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of more than 100 students who recently completed their LAMDA examinations. Students across our Saturday Theatre School and after-school classes took examinations in verse and prose, acting and musical theatre. Producing some of the strongest results we have seen in years.

LAMDA examinations are internationally recognised qualifications that encourage students to develop communication, creativity, self-expression and public speaking skills. Beyond performance, these exams equip young people with confidence that benefits them throughout school life, future education and everyday situations. Preparing for examinations teaches discipline, resilience and teamwork, while also allowing students to discover their own voice and individuality.

We are delighted to announce that every student from our Saturday Theatre School achieved a distinction — an exceptional accomplishment that reflects not only their hard work and dedication, but also the passion and commitment they bring to every class and performance. Across our afterschool settings, students achieved remarkably high grades, demonstrating tremendous growth in both performance ability and personal confidence.

We congratulate every single student who took part this year. Their performances, commitment and achievements have completely blown us away, and we cannot wait to see what they accomplish next.
