Note from SAKINA

We hope you’ve had a great start to the new year! Last year was a tough year for all of us and understandably made things harder for us at SAKINA and for many other creatives out there. The lessons we have learned are endless but we hope 2021 can be one where we make more effort to stay present, grateful and remember the importance of taking care of ourselves and those around us. We’re excited to finally share this Winter issue with you and hope that it can be a source of comfort and inspiration for you. This publication is also our first collaborative issue together with Skånes konstförening and Malmö based photographer Ikram Abdulkadir. It's been an amazing opportunity to build bridges between all of our platforms to highlight and showcase talented Muslim women creatives, founders and changemakers. This year marks 4 years since we started this publication and the past years have been insightful, challenging but also lots of fun. Founding an independent magazine comes with its set of challenges and a lot has happened during the last years of creating SAKINA. In this issue we reflect on the early days of working on and producing SAKINA, lessons we have learned as creatives, how we first met and what we look forward to this new year. Special thank you to all the creatives who participated in this season's Open Call and trusted us with your art. Thank you to Region Skåne Ung kraft and Skånes konstförening for being a space that has welcomed and supported this publication, for the encouragement and feedback. Last but not least, thank you to our ever-growing community and readers for the love and support.

Take care,

Naima Ali & Naima Bashir

A seat at the table In our journey of creating an independent magazine, we have been inspired by founders and creatives in our community who have stepped up to be the change we want to see in the world. Earlier this fall we had the chance to chat with Sagal Muse from Muse Avenue, Hafsa Lodi from Modestish, and Rose Nordin & Sofia Niazia from OOMK

OOMK

Issue 6 of OOMK ZINE

OOMK (one of my kind) is a collaborative publishing practise led by Rose Nordin, Sofia Niazi and Heiba Lamara. Together they make, publish and distribute books and printed works since 2014. They also commission new works by women artists and co-curate DIY cultures, which is an annual day festival exploring intersections of art and activism. Who is behind OOMK and could you introduce yourselves? Sofia Niazi, Rose Nordin, Heiba Lamara. Rose is a graphic designer and artist interested in the form of publications generating conceptual experiences in materials and visual queues. A particular interest in type and materiality. Sofia is an artist and educator who runs different types of mini art schools (mainly with Rosalie Schwieker) and is currently working on projects to do with the visual culture of the housing market. Heiba is a researcher. What’s the first zine you remember liking? Rose: Work by Jimi Gherkin from Alternative Press Sofia Niazi: Zines by Sabba Khan What is OOMK? & Who do you imagine OOMK is for? OOMK is an art publishing collective. It is for us, our kith and kin. What led you into Zine publishing? Wanting to make and share art and ideas, zines seemed like a really accessible and easy format to work with. Self-publishing also came with its own community which mainly congregated around small press fairs, so you could tap into a broader creative world (Sofia). What’s your favorite thing about being a publisher and your least favorite? Rose: My favourite thing is having autonomy over all aspects of a process that presents and disseminates an idea. Concept, content, form and even distribution being in my hands all at once is special. All the processes combined create a really committed long term relationship with a particular idea. I think my least favourite thing about all things is admin. Sofia: I like admin.

What is Rabbits Road Press and what does this space mean to you? Sofia: It’s a community and education focussed printing press which aims to make Riso printing and publishing work easier for people. We were involved in lots of different aspects of the self-publishing ecosystem; writing, making art, designing, distributions organising publishing fairs (like DIY Cultures), but one thing that was missing was the printing. We really liked the aesthetic and culture around Riso but it was hard to learn how to use the machine so that’s why we started the project. For me, Rabbits Road Press is a dreamy space, it’s demanding and a lot of work happens there with a lot of people but there is a great spirit of teamwork and friendship which feels precious. It’s also a place we can be our full selves and do things like pray during the day with ease. What advice do you have for young creatives who really haven’t found their place in the small press community but want to get into zine making? Rose: If the small press community is where you want to find your place, there is definitely room for you. If you would like to make zines let yourself do it. Maybe start with a collaboration. Lastly, what can we expect from OOMK in the near future? Rose: Inshallah more publications and more self lead projects together with our wider OOMK and RRP friends. We are planning more ambitious programming at Rabbits Road Press in 2021. We recently launched our library/archive and reopened for printing so hopefully more growth from this side.

How did your journey into journalism start?

How did Modestish come about?

I’m a fashion and lifestyle journalist in Dubai, and have been writing for various publications for the past ten years. I’ve always known that journalism would be my career path. In high school, I was the editor of the yearbook, and straight after school, I would go to my internship at ITP, one of the region’s biggest publishing companies. I studied journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto, and reported on issues such as honour killing in Canada’s immigrant Muslim communities, and the industrialisation of the Holy city of Makkah, before turning to the fashion beat.

I was so deeply immersed in the world of modest fashion, that when my book was finally published in the middle of the pandemic, I still felt like researching the key players and companies driving the movement, and writing about them. Modestish was a way to keep the spirit of my book alive, and forever progressing.

Where and who did you look for inspiration when writing the book Modestish? Honestly – Instagram! Instagram is one of the main vehicles of the modern modest fashion movement, so it was not difficult at all to find inspirational women – from bloggers, to designers, models and entrepreneurs – on the platform. Modest fashion seems to be a big trend right now, why do you think that is? Modesty is influencing runway trends and high street styles right now, mainly because mainstream retailers in the West have become aware of the spending power of Muslim consumers. There has also been a big movement towards inclusivity and diversity in the mainstream fashion industry, and models like Halima Aden are the faces fronting this movement. Who do you imagine the book Modesty is for? What are you hoping readers will get from it? Modesty is for all readers interested in fashion and culture, but I think it’ll attract two main groups of readers 1) Women of faith (Muslim, Christian and Jewish) who are familiar with modest fashion and are interested in being immersed in the topic, to learn about the different brands, bloggers and controversies of the movement, and 2) Readers without much experience with modest fashion who are interested in learning about why this has suddenly become a trend in the mainstream industry.

What’s your creative process and what are some lessons you’ve learned since writing a book and starting Modestish? My creative process involves making a cup of tea, settling down on the sofa, opening up a blank Word document, and writing whatever comes to me. Usually I work with outlines – so I’ll outline a story, and then start filling in all the blanks. Some of the lessons I’ve learned: Never, ever delete anything you write! It may be useful later. It’s better to save all deleted text in a separate document instead of deleting it forever. I’ve also learned that the modest fashion movement is really about this spirit of sisterhood that links women together from different faiths, backgrounds, ethnicities and countries. But – each woman’s journey with modest fashion and and interpretation of modesty is very personal, and needs to be respected. We have enough judgement and prejudice from the outside world – women within the movement shouldn’t be so harsh and judgemental about each other’s definitions and approaches to modesty. Only by uniting together can the movement become stronger and more influential. We’ll never all look the same, but we need to acknowledge that there’s room for all of us at the table.

What was the first magazine you remember reading and liking? I have always loved reading Stylist Magazine, thanks to their eye-catching covers, insightful stores and unique features. What media (podcast, zines, magazines etc) have inspired you, or do you go back to when you feel unmotivated? When I feel unmotivated I like to take a break and read books – mainly nonfiction books by Muslim women that discuss faith and modernity. Some of my favourites are The Veil and The Male Elite by Fatima Mernissi and Believing Women in Islam: Unreading Patriarchal Interpretations of the Quran by Asma Barlas. I find it extremely inspiring that these women have gone against the grain of tradition, orthodoxy and patriarchy to uncover the meanings of Islamic scripture for themselves and for the female gender. What are some of your favorite Modest fashion Instagram accounts? @shazaira @itsbasra @zahee22 @itsbeyzo @kd_sisters_style @dilacovered @the_reflective_ Lastly, where can our readers find you? On Instagram and Twitter @HafsaLodi and you can buy my book on Amazon websites and Bookdepository.com, which ships worldwide.

Sagal Muse Muse Avenue is a community driven digital magazine founded by Sagal Muse in 2018. The magazine is designed for the creative millennial Muslim women, Muse avenues aim is to elevate the voices ignored by the mainstream while sharing empowering and inspiring content. Hi Sagal! For our readers who don’t know you, can you tell us a bit about yourself? My name is Sagal Muse and I am a Toronto based social media manager, illustrator and the founder of Muse Avenue, a community driven digital magazine where modest fashion meets ambitious lifestyle. Growing up I was always interested in anything that fueled my creative side, whether that was painting, blogging, or creating collages on photoshop. Today my passion lies in infusing my artistic capabilities with building, growing and empowering diverse and inclusive communities. I came across Muse Avenue around 2019 and instantly fell love with the vibrant colors and diverse stories by Muslim creatives, what inspired you to start Muse Avenue? Thank you!! I started Muse Avenue by accident while attempting to create a modest fashion brand that speaks to millennial Muslim women living in the West. My professional background is in marketing so while I was developing my first collection I also wanted to create an experience that resonates with my audience. That experience ended up being a small digital magazine that showcased stories of inspiring Muslim women and a few modest ways to wear my first collection. The results of the launch were very different from what I expected. The community was very excited about the magazine in particular because they finally could resonate with one that showcased the styles and stories they always sought out. Even though that was my original goal with the collection, the magazine ended up being a lot more valuable to the community because of the lack of representation in mainstream media.

I also found that I enjoyed creating the magazine more than a modest fashion brand so I quickly decided to put my focus in on creating a digital magazine, which is now known as Muse Avenue. Muse Avenue has been and continues to be for Muslim women who are interested in modest fashion and living a creative and ambitious lifestyle. Even so it is a completely inclusive magazine so you will find that our stories and styles resonate with a broader audience as well that includes BIPOC women of any faith.

Muse Ave x Peace collective Shop the collection over at Peace-collective.com

Muse.ave What brings you most joy when working on new content for Muse? Developing a magazine has so many moving parts that tap into both creative and strategy equally. However, my favourite aspect has to be conducting the interviews and directing/styling shoots from start to finish. I think I enjoy both so much because I get to meet and work with so many different creative women during the process, who then share their unique ideas and perspectives making the magazine that much better. What’s the first magazine you remember liking? Is there any magazine that has inspired you or had an impact on you? Growing up I read Teen Vogue religiously and also really loved Nylon magazine. Although there was a lack of representation in both magazines at the time I loved looking at the featured styles and reading stories about creative women in theirrespective industries. You recently created a collection in partnership with Peace Collective? Could you tell us how it started and what was your experience designing this beautiful collection? I applied for Peace Collective’s Designer Fund back in June, which is an initiative that gives emerging Canadian Black designers the platform and ability to use their designs to give back. The team ended up choosing myself and one other designer to design a collection that is unique to our styles, which they would generously manufacture and feature on their site. 50% of the proceeds went to a charity of our choice and the other 50% went to help us grow our respective businesses further. My experience designing my collection for Muse Avenue was absolutely amazing. I had full creative freedom and got to work closely with the team at Peace Collective to bring the collection to life. Once the designs were finalized, Peace Collective involved me in every step of the content creation process as well, allowing me to choose my own model and even help with the direction of the shoot.

What change would you like to see within the creative and editorial industry for muslim creative women? I would love to see more creative Muslim women getting opportunities to contribute in various ways within the creative and editorial industries. We have such unique perspectives and skills which can be applied to so many different avenues of creative expression. Right now most of the well known Muslim women in the industry contribute as models or writers which are two important roles when it comes to representation, but I would like to see us take up space in roles that are beyond the norm such as creative direction, marketing, styling, photography/ videograpy, design and more. I would especially like to see these opportunities come up for Muslim women in mainstream media rather than just projects that specifically cater to Muslim women. We have so much genius to offer, it’s just a matter of time the world gets to see it. What’s your ambition for Muse Avenue looking forward? Looking forward I’m hoping that Muse Avenue becomes an even larger yet close knit community of Muslim women that connect over authentic stories about our journies as ambitious creatives, while sharing modest fashion and career related tips. I hope that Muse Avenue is able to provide content that resonates with our community through various mediums and experiences beyond our digital magazine although the magazine will always be the fabric of our brand. Where can our readers find you? You can find me/Muse Avenue at: @sagalmuse (on IG, TW & LinkedIn) @Muse.ave on IG @museAvenue_ on Twitter For more about Muse.ave read more on Museavenue.ca/
