English Bible History

T

he fascinating story of how we got the Bible in its present form actually starts thousands of years ago, as briefly outlined in our Timeline of Bible Translation History. As a background study, we recommend that you first review our discussion of the PreReformation History of the Bible from 1,400 B.C. to 1,400 A.D., which covers the transmission of the scripture through the original languages of Hebrew and Greek, and the 1,000 years of the Dark & Middle Ages when the Word was trapped in only Latin. Our starting point in this discussion of Bible history, however, is the advent of the scripture in the English language with the “Morning Star of the Reformation”, John Wycliffe.

“Wyclif”), was well-known throughout Europe for his opposition to the teaching of the organized Church, which he believed to be contrary to the Bible. With the help of his followers, called the Lollards, and his assistant Purvey, and many other faithful scribes, Wycliffe produced dozens of English language manuscript copies of the scriptures. They were translated out of the Latin Vulgate, which was the only source text available to Wycliffe.

The Pope was so infuriated by his teachings and his translation of the Bible into English, that 44 years after Wycliffe had died, he ordered the bones to be dug-up, crushed, and scattered in the river!

Hudson Taylor Hudson Taylor was one of the greatest missionaries who ever lived. He was a young doctor in England and he went to China where he did wonderful work for God. I hope you all know that in China now there are millions and millions of Christians. It's not least owing to the faithful witness of that dear, great man of God, Dr. James Hudson Taylor.

Before he went to China, he was in Hull. As a young doctor as he then was, he used to go around different homes and houses attending to the sick as all doctors do. In one of these houses, there was a very sick man who was a wicked sinner who had no time for God. Dr Hudson Taylor used to do this. He would come in and the man would be lying in his bed. Doctor Taylor would do the medical things he had to do. He did these kind things to him putting various bandages on, washing him, attending to him and giving him medicine. శం఩ుటి 1 శంచిక 1

Every time when he had finished the medical side of his work, Doctor Taylor would say to this man, "Now, he said, "my dear friend, I want to just say a few words to you about Jesus Christ. That He came into the world to save sinners and He will save you if you will believe in Him." And every time, this man would turn his face to the wall - he wouldn't listen. He set his face as though it was made of cement: hard, hard expression against the Gospel.

Doctor Taylor came regularly, week after week or month after month, and every time when he had done his medical work he would attend to this man and then he would say, "Now, just a little word about my Lord Jesus Christ who died for sinners." The man would turn his face away - he wouldn't listen.

One day when Doctor Taylor came, in his heart of hearts he said something that we all at times feel, he said to



himself, "What's the use; a waste of breath?" On this particular day he gave him the medicine, tended to his body, put his instruments into his case without a word, lifted his bag and walked towards the door.

Five Finger Prayer 1. Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember.

2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal.

This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.

3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.

4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact, that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.

5. And lastly comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all. Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, "The least shall be the greatest among you." Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself.. Teaching Obedience To Children

W

hat does obedience really mean and how can parents teach their children to obey? According to the Oxford Dictionary, to obey means to comply with the command, direction or request of a person (in this case, the parents). It also means to behave in accordance with a principle or a law. God has given parents and guardians the responsibility of teaching their children that in this world they will always encounter laws.

Children need to learn that there will always be laws and rules to be obeyed in the normal course of living in this world (ex driving on the right side of the road, not stealing, not fighting, washing our hands before eating etc.) and that there is an unpleasant consequence when laws are not obeyed. They also need to learn that rules are set in place for their protection, when they are old enough to understand this. Parents are to teach this principle first within their homes. The first simple rules are that there is a time to sleep, a time to play and a time to eat.

I remember many times when one of our children would disobey and I would not feel like punishing them because it took a lot of effort to take them to a private place and engage them in conversation. I would however remind myself that I needed to be consistent.

Our son is 24 years old now and he still reminds us how much he hated it when we would ask him if he knew why he was being punished! He has however said that he will do the same thing with his children because he feels that we clearly communicated to him that we were not spanking him because we hated him but out of love for him. This truth is espoused in Proverbs 13: 24 – “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.”

In the account of the conversation between Jimmy and his father, one can see how many principles have been violated. It should have been made clear to Jimmy that he does not touch medicine bottles under any circumstances.

The fact that he is asking his father, means that it is not clear to him whether he is allowed to pour himself some medicine or not. His father is a poor coach, who ignores his “student’s” questions. Jimmy’s father says, “Haven’t I always told you to be obedient?” yet does not make it clear what he has to obey and the consequences for disobediశం఩ుటి 1 శంచిక 1

ence. His father tells Jimmy that next time he does the same thing he will punish him. If there is a rule that Jimmy has disobeyed then why is he not punishing him now? The answer is that dad is more interested in reading about the stock market than he is in teaching his son to obey.

Finally, parents must make a distinction between disobedience and mistakes. Children should not be punished for mistakes, but for disobedience – “I clearly told you not to do this, but you have done it so you will bear the consequences.” There is a difference between a child carrying a glass across the room, tripping on something and falling down, breaking the glass, and a child who breaks the glass in the process of playing with it at the table while he is supposed to be eating. He should only be punished in the second case if it has been clearly indicated to him prior to the incident, that he is not to play at the table but to eat his food. He should also have been told what punishment he will receive, should he be caught playing at the table instead of eating his food.

Why am I belaboring this point?

We need to understand that how a person later on behaves in society is a reflection of how he was taught to behave as a child while he or she was still moldable. Unfortunately many of our jails are full of people who were never taught about the consequences of bad behavior when they were growing up. He who is not taught by his mother will be taught by the world!



When you co-sign, you accept responsibility for the debts of others. When you cosign you are enabling your friend to buy something he cannot afford. The Bible calls that "putting up security" or being "surity." When we were first married, we decided to buy a vacuum cleaner. Even though we had the money to buy it, the salesman told us that we could delay the payment for three months if we put it on credit. We thought that was a good idea.

Why pay for it now if we can wait three months? The problem was that they wouldn't qualify us for the payment plan since we didn't have a credit history. Neither of us had ever had a credit card. The salesman suggested that we ask someone to co-sign the loan. So, we asked a Christian friend. Fortunately for us, he knew the teaching of Proverbs better than we did. He showed us these verses and refused to co-sign. We were grateful for the Biblical instruction and bought the vacuum cleaner with cash. Our friend knew what makes a good friend. Often people pledge themselves to be responsible for their friend's debt. This is a recipe for disaster. It is best to encourage your friends to buy only what they can afford.

Church service stopped in Naggal -utter Pradesh On September 12, at around 11.30 am a mob of approximately three dozen members of Arya Samaj disrupted a church service in Naggal in the Saharanpur District of Uttar Pradesh. While the Church service was in progress the mob entered the room where worship was conducted.

They started arguing with the pastor and Church people and blaming for converting people.” Though the members tried to reason with the mob that they are following Christ in exercise of their freedom of conscience and because they have been personally blessed by Christ. The mob refused to listen and kept arguing. "Only after the police’s intervention did the mob finally left earlier on September 5, a same group along with their leader had disturbed Church service. They accused the pastor of eating meat and converting people. The mob argued that the Bible is wrong and presents a false God. Pastor beaten up in RAIGARH Chhattisgargh Robinson Roat (Evangelist, RaigarhCG) was beaten by Hindu radicals on Sunday, 12 September 2010 morning as the Sunday School was in progress in his Home-Church. Some 20-25 youths of his neighborhood barged into his house and assaulted him, threatened & asked him to stop all Christian activities in the neighborhood.

Persecution against Christians in Satna (MP) V A Antony (Evangelist, Satna-MP) was last week falsely accused in local News-Papers of carrying out the funeral of a non-believer in the local Christian Cemetery. The news report by anti-gospel elements was followed by a complaint to Inspector General of Police. Based on the

complaint our dear brother was summoned by the local police and a high level enquiry is pending.

Few months back the son of a local believer had died under mysterious circumstances. The believers of the Assembly, on the desire & consent of the parents and relatives decided to bury him in the Christian cemetery. During that time all needed formalities were completed.

Another church attacked in Pakistan: bibles and cross burnt Karachi September 19: A Pentecostal church in Karachi has been attacked and vandalized by militants still angry over a threat to burn Qur’ans in the United States earlier this month. Nine copies of the Bible, three hymn books and three wooden crosses were found burnt on Sept. 18 at the Nasri Pentecostal Church in Shah Latif Town, Karachi.

The area is home to about 120 Christian families. A dholki or hand-held drum used in gospel music was also found damaged.

“The church gates were open and the locks broken. The attackers broke open a cupboard and vandalized religious items at around midnight,” said Pastor Peter Shahzad.
