“It is Finished” John 19:30

he words “It is finished” are recorded only in John’s gospel, where they are described as Jesus’ last words. Jesus has been brutally tortured to death in a humiliating public execution, branded as an enemy to his nation. This is not a peaceful passing surrounded by family -- a “good death”, as Christians sometimes express it. This is as bad a death as you could imagine. Jesus musters what strength remains to him, and his recorded words are necessarily brief - but full of meaning for us. I wonder occasionally what I will find to say at my final moment - if, indeed, I will have the opportunity or the presence of mind to say anything at all. Literature and movies tend to paint a picture of nobility and significance at such moments. Clearly he is about to die – why bother to tell us so? John’s gospel gives us a clue.

Some translated versions of the words says “It is accomplished”, and says earlier that “Jesus knew that everything had now been completed”. John is the gospel writer who gives us, above all, an overview of Jesus’ purpose on Earth: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth”. There is a path and a purpose being expressed here. From John’s account, I take it that these words are not about Jesus’ death, but rather about his life.

This is not just a merciful release from torture:

it is the final deliberate action in the drama of a life accomplished. And it was by no means an easy life. The gospels testify to persistent hardship, starting with Jesus’ birth as a displaced person, his narrow escape from butchery at the hands of Herod, and his early life as a refugee.

The account documents his arduous life as an itinerant preacher and healer, and the callous machinations of political and religious leaders in bringing about his execution. But Jesus is now dying by crucifixion. Where is the accomplishment in this shameful ending?

Knowing that he is on a path that can only be accomplished through a brutal death, Jesus has nevertheless seen it through.

But Jesus knew that there was no other way through, and he died as the suffering servant foretold by Isaiah, rather than following the road to power. This has been a journey faithfully pursued day by day in steady communion with the Father. John says “bowing his head, He gave up his spirit”, and we feel that these words signify a deliberate act of completion. I take encouragement from this. The example of Jesus is not about how to die well, but how to live well - how to walk with God whatever happens. We know our own struggles and failed intentions, and our final moments are hardly likely to be monuments to triumphant victory. Perhaps in the end it will just be a relief to be through with it all.

I find both the life and death of Jesus to be an unfailingly compelling example. If we walk steadily with God, we will be with God. With the help of the Father, we are in it for the long haul, and that will be a life accomplished.

Missionary

William Carey "Shoemaker by trade, but scholar, linguist and missionary by God's training," English Baptist missionary to India. Born in England in 1761. Pastor before going to the mission field, he spent an active forty-one years serving the Lord in India, including translating the Scriptures.

illiam Carey was one of God's giants in the history of evangelism! One of his biographers, F. Dealville Walker, wrote of Carey: "He, with a few contemporaries, was almost singlehanded in conquering the prevailing indifference and hostility to missionary effort; Carey developed a plan for missions, and printed his amazing Enquiry; he influenced timid and hesitating men to take steps to the evangelizing of the world." Another wrote of him, "Taking his life as a whole, it is not too much to say that he was the greatest and most versatile Christian missionary sent out in modern times."

Two years later he moved to Moulton to become a schoolmaster and a year later he became pastor of the small Baptist congregation there.

It was in Moulton that Carey heard the missionary call. In his own words he cried, "My attention to missions was first awakened after I was at Moulton, by reading the Last Voyage of Captain Cook." Too many, Cook's Journal was a thrilling story of adventure, but to Carey it was a revelation of human need! He then began to read every book that had any bearing on the subject. (This, along with his language study — for at twentyone years of age Carey had mastered Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Italian, and was turning to Dutch and French. One well called his shoemaker's cottage "Carey's College," for as he cobbled shoes along with his preaching he never sat at his bench without some kind of a book before him.)

Carey was born in a small thatched cottage in Paulerspury, a typical Northampton shire village in England, August 17, 1761, of a weaver's family. When about eighteen he left the Church of England to "follow Christ" and to "...go forth unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach." English Bible History Erasmus In considering the experiences of Linacre and Colet, the great scholar Erasmus was so moved to correct the corrupt Latin Vulgate, that in 1516, with the help of printer John Froben, he published a Greek-Latin Parallel New Testament. The Latin part was not the corrupt Vulgate, but his own fresh rendering of the text from the more accurate and reliable Greek, which he had managed to collate from a half-dozen partial old Greek New Testament manuscripts he had acquired. This milestone was the first non-Latin Vulgate text of the scripture to be produced in a millennium… and the first ever to come off a printing press. The 1516 Greek-Latin New Testament of Erasmus further focused attention on just how corrupt and inaccurate the Latin Vulgate had become, and how important it was to go back and use the original Greek (New Testament) and original Hebrew (Old Testament) languages to maintain accuracy… and to translate them faithfully into the languages of the common people, whether that be English, German, or any other tongue. No sympathy for this “illegal activity” was to be found from Rome… even as the words of Pope Leo X's declaration that "the fable of Christ was quite profitable to him" continued through the years to infuriate the people of God. Martin Luther had a small head-start on Tyndale, as Luther declared his intolerance for the Roman Church’s corruption on Halloween in 1517, by nailing his 95 Theses of Contention to the Wittenberg Church door. Luther, who would be exiled in the months following the Diet of Worms Council in 1521 that was designed to martyr him, would translate the New Testament into German for the first time from the 1516 Greek-Latin New Testament of Erasmus, and publish it in September of 1522. Luther also published a German Pentateuch in 1523, and another edition of the German New Testament in 1529. In the 1530’s he would go on to publish the entire Bible in German.

When is Good Friday celebrated?

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. It is the most solemn day in the Christian calendar. The dates of Good Friday, which vary each year, occur between March 20th and April 23rd. The police have already arrested 35 Hindu activists belonging to the RSS who have been also charged by the police for their attack on the pastors and their family members.

Pray that both the earthquake and economic crisis will lead more Japanese to turn from their pride and self-sufficiency to faith in Jesus Christ. Pray that small groups begun among the homeless will grow into reproducing churches.
