A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
DEAR SAINT VIATOR NATION,
As I sit down to reflect on the past year we have shared together, I feel a sense of overwhelming joy and gratitude. Thank you for your time, your trust, your patience, and your support. The coming year will bring new faces, new opportunities, and I look forward to partnering with you to continue advancing our mission and vision for Catholic education.
I was asked many times about what I have learned over the past year. What were the biggest surprises or challenges? What inspired you or kept you up at night? Reflecting on the more than 500 conversations with stakeholders in our Saint Viator community, a few themes emerged, which I feel are at the core of our mission and identity.
1. Saint Viator’s greatest asset, even more than the incredible academic and faith formation that prepares students for college and life, is the community. It has been amazing to see alumni interact (sometimes for the first time in decades) and bond over shared foundational memories. I’ve seen countless photos or Red Lion flags at weddings, baptisms, graduations, and parties.
2. Our alumni are eager to reconnect—through alumni gatherings, networking events, and school functions. It seems like a few of our longstanding events have gone away. There is a genuine interest and eagerness to find ways to connect and collaborate. I want to make a purposeful effort to do more to welcome our alumni back in the years ahead! We are already planning new events!
3. Our teachers and coaches have been, and continue to be, top notch. In my more than 500 conversations, I have heard incredible stories about iconic figures like the late Br. Robert Ruhl, C.S.V., the late Fr. Arnold Perham, C.S.V., Mr. Pat Mahoney, and so many others.
This summer has allowed me to prepare for the exciting year ahead. The new leadership, coming to help direct the ship, is full of great energy, a supportive attitude, and collaborative thought. We have an opportunity to increase our enrollment and share our great Saint Viator story. We know we can count on all of you to champion our team and help us grow Saint Viator into the best version ever.
Please stop in, support our athletic and extracurricular activities by attending a game or a performance, stop by my office, send me a note, love us on social media. It takes a strong-knit community to influence great change in our world. Saint Viator will be a leader in that change.
Yours in Christ,
Ryan Aiello President
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
NIGHT OF THE LION RAISES $1.3M FOR TUITION ASSISTANCE
The 2025 Night of the Lion, held on Saturday, April 12 at Saint Viator High School, was an unforgettable evening of celebration, generosity, and community spirit.
Emceed by new Head Football Coach Robbie Gould, the sold-out event featured lively music and dancing with the band Brass from the Past, bringing alumni, parents, and friends together in support of tuition assistance.
President Ryan Aiello shared heartfelt reflections on the night: “You took my breath away at the Night of the Lion this year. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making this event one of the best nights of my career. From the warmth and hospitality you shared with my wife, Kelly, and me to the amazing energy, heartfelt wishes, and incredible treasures you shared, I was overwhelmed. You helped us raise over $1,331,043 for tuition assistance!”
Christine and Matt Boler ’84 were honored with the 2025 Saint Viator Legacy Award in recognition of their extraordinary commitment to Catholic education and the Viatorian mission.
As the need for meaningful tuition support continues to grow, the Night of the Lion stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together.

YEAR’S RECIPIENTS OF THE LEGACY AWARD: CHRISTINE AND MATT BOLER ’84
At the sold-out Night of the Lion fundraiser in April, Christine and Matt Boler ’84 received the 2025 Saint Viator Legacy Award, which recognizes extraordinary commitment from an individual or family provided to the school.
Christine and Matt Boler have demonstrated that dedication through their strong commitment to the school over the years, and through their active leadership.
Matt started serving on advisory committees as early as 1995, after earning graduate degrees from Northwestern University. He was recruited to share his expertise at the advisory level by Fr. Charles Bolser, C.S.V., who served as president of Saint Viator at that time. His involvement grew from there.
He went on to serve on the board of trustees from 1997 to 2003, including serving as president from 1999-2001, working together with Fr. Thomas von Behren, C.S.V., then president — and he was instrumental in closing one campaign and subsequently launching a new campaign, that proved to be transformative for Saint Viator. In the following years Matt also provided guidance in the launch of other campaigns.
Some of those improvements from these campaigns included building the three-story, 50,000 square foot Boler Center in 2005, renovating science labs, as well as the comprehensive renovation of the Scanlan Center in 2011, the renovation of the Marie Gallagher Academic Commons, establishing Querbes Hall, a college-style dining center, and updating the fine arts facilities, which were all completed by 2015.
Most recently, Matt and Christine stepped up as cochairs of the Igniting Our Community Campaign, which hopes to improve programs and facilities at Saint Viator while expanding financial resources for families.
Their commitment to Saint Viator and Catholic education dates back to the early days of their marriage, when the couple moved from the city out to the Northwest suburbs once they started having children. They gravitated back to the Palatine area, where Matt and his four siblings had grown up, and to St. Theresa Catholic School and ultimately Saint Viator High School.
“When you think about it, you’re turning your kids over to someone for 70% of the day,” Matt says. “In thinking about that, it was really important to us that the teachers and the school have the same values and faith as we have. We felt that the formation of the person was far more important than anything else.”
I feel I learned more in my four years at Saint Viator than I did during any other period in my life. It was foundational for me.”
MATT BOLER
’84
In making their decision, Matt drew back fondly on his years at Saint Viator, and of all the friends he made and the teachers he got to know. But it was more than that. He would leave his familiar confines to attend the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering, before earning an MBA and master’s degree in engineering management at Northwestern.
Yet, he still credits his education at Saint Viator with being transformative: “I feel I learned more in my four years at Saint Viator than I did during any other period in my life. It was foundational for me, in math, science, and literature.”
He specifically credits the late Fr. Arnold Perham, C.S.V., with making the difficult concepts of calculus easy to learn and fun. If you answered a question incorrectly, he would place a stuffed buzzard on your desk.
“YOU get the buzzard,” Fr. Perham would quip to students. “He will not be removed until you redeem yourself.”
His interest in math he dates back to his freshman year Algebra II Trigonometry class, taught by Mrs. Mary Helen Peterson.
“She taught me how to look at problems and think about problems,” Matt Boler says. “She really listened to what I thought and that made an impression on me. Fr. Perham then took that interest to the next level. I guess it’s not surprising that I became an engineer.”
Christine grew up on a farm and attended a rural school in Hebron, IN, and consequently did not have the chance to attend a Catholic school. She developed her strong religious faith from her parents and grandparents.
“All I’ve ever grown up with was the Catholic faith, and I wanted my kids to have that kind of faith,” she says. “I felt if they went to a Catholic school, if there were surrounded by teachers and classmates who shared the same values then they would walk out as well-rounded, faith-filled people.”
Ultimately, Matt and Christine remain committed to helping Saint Viator distinguish itself, academically and athletically, as a leader in Catholic education, and they encourage others to join them.
“It is critically important for the future of the Catholic Church to teach kids about their faith,” Matt says. “The Viatorians have been uniquely focused on accompanying high school students in their faith development and we admire that.”
“Take a leap of faith,” he says, “take a seat at the table and get involved.”

IN MISSION, READY TO LEAD
THE CLASS OF 2025: ROOTED
Now several months removed from graduation, the Saint Viator Class of 2025 continues to impress. With a 100 percent college acceptance rate and over $30 million in scholarship offers, this remarkable group exemplifies excellence in academics, leadership, and service.
At the 62nd Annual Commencement in May, President Ryan Aiello offered words of admiration: “The Class of 2025 is truly a remarkable group of young women and men. They are intellectually inspired, exceptionally talented, ready to serve, wonderfully accomplished, and fully engaged in the Viatorian mission.”
The ceremony featured addresses by salutatorian Henry Marshall and valedictorian Lucy Jochaniewicz. Henry, a National Merit Finalist and Illinois State Scholar, was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll every semester. A standout student-athlete in basketball and track, he was recognized as an ESCC Scholar Athlete, among additional honors. This fall, he begins his studies in engineering and basketball career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
“I cannot think of a better lens to look back at our four years than through one of gratitude,” he said in his speech.
Lucy, also a Principal’s Honor Roll student and Illinois State Scholar, distinguished herself as a Querbes Scholar, STEM Scholar, and ESCC Scholar in golf. She will attend the University of Notre Dame and major in engineering. “Those people you remember and those friendships you want to maintain have changed your life,” Lucy reflected. “And just as people have changed your life, you have changed someone’s life.”
Two awards, both named in honor of alumni, were presented during the ceremony. The Andrew Johnstone Award, named for a beloved student who passed away in 1991, recognizes outstanding leadership, humility, and courage. Two seniors were honored as co-recipients: Ainslie McKenna and Brendan Patton. The Christopher Erdmann Award honors a student who has made a lasting impact on the community. It was established in memory of the alum who passed away from leukemia. This year’s honoree, Ellen Denten, joined a distinguished group of past recipients whose names are engraved on the cup.
The Class of 2025 has undoubtedly left its mark—and the Saint Viator community looks forward to all they will achieve in the years ahead.

A JOYFUL CELEBRATION OF FAITH AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WITH BISHOP O’MALLEY
This past spring, Saint Viator High School was honored to welcome the Most Reverend Timothy O’Malley, newly appointed auxiliary bishop of Vicariate I, as the celebrant of a special Easter liturgy. Held in the Cahill Gymnasium, the Mass brought together students, faculty, and nearly 100 distinguished guests in a vibrant celebration of faith, community, and Catholic education.
Originally scheduled to be celebrated by Cardinal Blase Cupich, the Mass was concelebrated by Bishop O’Malley following the Cardinal’s unexpected travel to Rome after the passing of Pope Francis. The community joined in prayer not only for the Easter season but also in remembrance of the Holy Father.
The liturgy also offered an opportunity to recognize Saint Viator’s Blue Ribbon distinction, awarded last fall. In his homily, Bishop O’Malley commended the school’s faculty and administrators for their dedication, while also applauding the students for embodying the values and excellence that earned the national recognition.
“Catholic schools do a really good job preparing students for college,” he remarked. “But they also drive us to look deeper and come to know Jesus Christ.”
Bishop O’Malley also shared reflections on his own Catholic education, recalling his formative years at School of Saints Faith, Hope and Charity School and
Loyola Academy in Wilmette. He spoke of the unique gift that Catholic education offers—cultivating not only the mind, but the heart and soul.
Concelebrating the Mass were Provincial Fr. Mark Francis, C.S.V. ’71, and Saint Viator Chaplain Fr. John Eustice, C.S.V. Viatorians in attendance included Br. Peter Lamick ’07 and Br. Rob Robertson, as well as Associates Ann Perez, Vice President of Mission and Identity; Cathy Abrahamian, Jen Bonifacic ’89 Anderson, Brigette Brankin, and Kurt Paprocki ’00.
Also joining the celebration were priests from surrounding parishes, the mayor of Arlington Heights, Jim Tinaglia, and representatives from neighboring Catholic schools, along with parents, alumni, and friends of the Saint Viator community.
During the liturgy, Bishop O’Malley blessed the large crucifix now mounted on the north wall of the Cahill Gymnasium. Once displayed at the former Ascension-St. Susanna Parish on Chicago’s South Side, the crucifix now stands as a powerful reminder of faith and service for all who gather at Saint Viator.
“This cross served as a reminder of our faith for many years at St. Susanna’s,” Bishop O’Malley said. “Here, let it be a reminder to take up our own daily cross and serve those accounted of little importance.”
ALUMNI REMEMBER FR. ARNIE
“When I announced that I was attending the University of Chicago after graduation, he commented, “That’s the perfect school for you.” I didn’t fully appreciate the nuance of that statement for several more years. He will be sorely missed, but will remain a legendary teacher in the hearts and minds of so many of us.”
KERRY LEMKE ’90 CONNEELY
“I thank Fr. Perham specifically for my Calculus BC test result, which contributed to my winning an academic scholarship. I came back to thank him. I told him, “Father, I got great news from Harper College.” He joked, “You got a professorship?” He was smart and funny.”
MATTHEW SCALLON ’83
REST IN PEACE
FR. ARNOLD “ARNIE” PERHAM, C.S.V.
Fr. Arnold “Arnie” Perham, C.S.V. died on Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, at the Viatorian Province Center, at the age of 95, in his 77th year of religious life and 70th year of priesthood. His Memorial Mass and burial were on Wednesday, June 24.
Fr. Arnie was born in Chicago, just after the financial crash of 1929. He was baptized at St. Viator Church in Chicago, where he’d become an altar boy, learn the faith from Viatorians, and be steeped in the ubiquitous Catholicism of the city.
When it came time to choose between studying at Illinois Institute of Technology or entering religious formation, Fr. Arnie chose religious life. Yet, he’d never be far from math, science, and education.
He professed first vows in 1948 and was ordained a priest in 1956, and he earned degrees from Loyola University Chicago, Catholic University of America, and the University of Notre Dame.
In over 77 years of religious life, Fr. Arnie was almost always ministering in education, from his early years at Cathedral High School in Springfield (now Sacred Heart-Griffin) to a short stint at Loyola University Chicago, to his prolific service of nearly 60 years to Saint Viator High School.
Fr. Arnie was well known for his work as a math teacher and as a tutor in the Saint Viator Math Lab. Even after retirement, he continued mentoring and teaching students in creative ways, including special enrichment projects for Querbes Scholars and supplying specialized tests and study materials for the Math Team.
“Simply the best teacher I’ve ever had. He made learning fun. I sent him several notes over the years letting him know that and he would always reply with a personal memory of me as a student.”
JUDE FISCHER ’80
Around the Province Center, where Fr. Arnie lived in retirement, his steady activity was always apparent. Often, he was busy at the library computer station, feverishly scrolling articles for research and designing problem sets; other times, he’d be away from that desk, but the way he left his tablet, file folders, and packets of papers suggested he’d be back soon with more ideas.
Fr. Arnie was a Viatorian who’d seen a lot – born into economic depression, coming of age amid World War II, receiving religious formation from a brother who was a wartime POW, entering seminary during liturgical reform, and living out his priesthood in the unfolding change of Vatican II, not to mention Viatorian evolutions, including the advent of association. Yet, he was not one to resist or reject change, even when it was tough.

CELEBRATING BROTHERHOOD AND LEGACY CHARTER CLASS
OF 1965 REUNION BRINGS LIONS HOME
This past spring, Saint Viator High School proudly welcomed back members of its first graduating class for a joyful celebration honoring the Charter Class of 1965 and their enduring bond of brotherhood.
The day began with a tribute to members of the 1965 Baseball Team—Tim Walinski, Don Kulla, Bob Stevens, and Chuck Heinrich who were honored on the Lions’ home field nearly 60 years after leading their team to a second-place state finish. Invited by Head Baseball Coach Terry Beyna, the alumni threw out a ceremonial first pitch and joined fans in cheering on the Lions.
Later, the class reunited on campus for a special 60-Year Reunion. The evening included a welcome in Querbes Hall, a Mass in the Alumni Memorial Chapel, and a lively buffet dinner and social hour—filled with stories, laughter, and reconnections.
As part of the celebration, three special honors were presented. Chuck Heinrich received the Lion Pride Award, recognizing his leadership and lifelong commitment to the Saint Viator community. Tim Wickstrom and Edward Odmark were honored with the Lion Benefactor Award for their generous and continued support of the school’s mission.
“We exchanged laughs, smiles, and stories of both today and years long past. Five hours simply wasn’t enough,” said Chuck Heinrich.
Many attendees noted the impressive growth of the school since their last visit. “I was surprised by the number of improvements made since our 50th reunion,” said Odmark.
Tom Zimmerman added, “Saint Viator was—and is—a special place. Back in the day we were known as ‘Men of Viator.’ I’m proud to be part of this unique group.”
NEW TRADITIONS TAKE ROOT
In his first year as president, Ryan Aiello introduced a series of fresh initiatives and events aimed at deepening alumni engagement and strengthening the Saint Viator community.
Among them was the inaugural Young Alumni Turkey Bowl, hosted in partnership with the Saint Viator boys lacrosse program. Held on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the flag football game welcomed spirited participation from alumni in the Classes of 2021 through 2024. Plans are already underway to expand the invite to include the Class of 2025 next fall.
Another meaningful addition was the Pet Blessing Ceremony, held on Friday, April 11. Alumni, students, and families gathered on campus to receive a special blessing for their beloved pets from former president Fr. Charlie Bolser, C.S.V.
We look forward to continuing these new traditions in the year ahead. Stay tuned for details about the second annual Turkey Bowl and Pet Blessing— coming soon!

A NOTE TO OUR READERS
The In Memoriam section remains an important way for us to honor those we’ve lost and live out the Corporal Work of Mercy to “Bury the Dead.” As our community grows and the number of deaths increases, we will be reducing the amount of detail included in each listing.
With online platforms like legacy.com and funeral home websites now offering full obituary information, our focus will be on noting the deaths of alumni and faculty and briefly acknowledging the loss of family members. We continue to hold all deceased members of our community in prayer.
