WITH SOLOIST TOBY MAR
THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2025 | 7:00 PM THE AUDITORIUM OF
We spent some time thinking about what to call this year’s concert. While none of the repertoire titles quite fit, we were drawn to the idea that the music we’re performing is tried and true, and that we are performing it here in the Auditorium—in the OG, or original, building of St. George’s.
New things are exciting, but there’s something powerful about returning to tradition. Pieces like Florentiner March and Canadian Folk Song Suite are cornerstones of wind band repertoire. Their inclusion tonight reflects the enduring legacy of the St. George’s Music Program—music that has stood the test of time, much like the traditions we continue to uphold.
One such tradition is celebrating our graduating Senior Concert Band musicians. These young men have made incredible contributions to the music you will hear tonight, and their excellence will forever be a part of our program’s legacy.
But tonight is not only about our seniors—it’s a celebration of every student’s musical journey. From our Grade 8s who began their Senior School experience just months ago, to the Grade 9s who have grown tremendously under Mr. Murray’s guidance, to the Junior and Senior Jazz Ensembles who showcase style and improvisation, and finally to our Grades 10, 11, and 12 students who have come together as an outstanding Senior Concert Band—we are incredibly proud of each and every one of them.
It has truly been a wonderful year, and we are thrilled to welcome you to our #ThrowbackThursday edition of the 2025 Spring Concert. Thank you to all parents and students for your continued support—it means the world to us.
Before we begin, please note that the concert is being professionally recorded and photographed. We’ll be happy to share photos and a streaming link with you in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please silence your cell phones and refrain from taking photos or videos during the performance so everyone can enjoy the music uninterrupted.
We hope you enjoy the show!

Toby is a lifer at St. George’s and was delighted to be appointed as a Rigg Scholar. He began his trumpet journey in the Grade 5 band where he fell in love with the big brass sound! His first trumpet teacher was Mark D’Angelo, and he currently studies with Marcus Goddard of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. At the senior school, Toby has been very fortunate to be under the guidance of his two concert band conductors, Dr. Dean Markel and Mr. Rob Murray. In 2023 and 2024, he was awarded Principal Trumpet of the National Youth Band of Canada. During the summer of 2024, he was selected for the International Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra. In the summer of 2025, Toby will join the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. Toby is delighted to play his favourite concerto with his classmates tonight!

The following are the 2025 Graduates of the St. George’s Music Department. Many of these young men have played in St. George’s Bands since Grade 5. The success of the Music Department is due in large part to the hard work and dedication of these fine young men. We would like to thank them and wish them all the best in their promising futures. Graduates: may music always be in your hearts and minds.
